S(he) Won Gold — But Did We Lose the Plot?

Hey, this is Jim Detchen and you're listening to Think First, powered by Gaslight 360. I've spent years around national championship-level high school basketball and have two kids competing in NCAA Division I sports. So when it comes to narratives, spin and pressure from the top, I've seen how it works up close. Let's break one down today. If biological reality doesn't matter in women's sports anymore, what are we actually protecting? And who wins when the only rule left is don't ask questions? When fairness gets redefined on the fly, who's writing the new playbook? Why is saying that's a guy considered more offensive than watching your daughter lose a title to one? What happens to women's sports when women are told to smile and scoot over? And how did we get to a place where reality is optional but submission is mandatory?
Speaker 1:So a high school athlete named AB Hernandez just cleaned up at the California State Track Championships Gold in triple jump, gold in high jump, silver in long jump, three medals all in the girl's division. Now she is biologically male, which means and I say this gently he likely benefited from decades of testosterone and you know bone structure. But in the press it was hailed as a win for diversity and inclusion and courage. You know what didn't get mentioned the girl in fourth place, the one who probably trained for a year for a chance that no longer exists. Now here's where the gaslight gets Olympic-level creative. Instead of disqualifying him sorry her the California Interscholastic Federation, or CIF, decided to fix the optics. They rolled out a pilot policy letting more girls share the podium when a transgender athlete wins, because when the rules are broken, just add more ribbons. It's not fairness, it's theater, like musical chairs, but the music never stops and the chairs are all made of narrative. And if you're confused, that's by design. Enter Gavin Newsom, our gel-haired governor, spun the CIF's move as reasonable and balanced, like letting your kid win at Candyland, because it builds self-esteem. He called it a respectful path forward, which is polite speak, for I have no clue what to do and I'd like to keep my job. Funny how fast trust the science becomes. Ignore the biology when there's a press release involved. Meanwhile, the Trump administration, never shy, said enough. They pointed to Executive Order 14201, which bans biological males from competing in female divisions, and then the DOJ dropped a letter. California has until June 9th to disavow the CIF policy or kiss their federal funding goodbye.
Speaker 1:This wasn't subtle. It was a line in the sand, one that says women's sports exist for women. And if that sounds radical, ask yourself why. Now, to be clear, ab Hernandez is a kid. This isn't about him, her personally but she is now the face of a culture war, a war where girls are told you can run fast, jump high and train like a pro, but if the politics change, you don't get to win.
Speaker 1:We're not asking for cruelty, we're asking for truth. And the truth is this you don't need to shame anyone to say that's not fair, Because if we can't say that, what are we even defending anymore? Sometimes fairness isn't a feeling, it's a fact, and no amount of hashtags can change that. You don't need all the answers, but you should question the ones you're handed. Want to go deeper?
