In 1931, a steam-powered cargo ship named the SS Baychimo became trapped in Arctic sea ice off the coast of Alaska. Her crew abandoned her, assuming she would sink or be destroyed. But the Baychimo didn’t go down. Instead, she began to drift—alone—through the frozen north. For nearly 40 years, she was seen again and again: by Inuit hunters, pilots, and passing vessels. No one could catch her. No one could stop her. She became known as The Ghost Ship of the Arctic.
