In this deeply personal episode of Voices in Scrubs, I reflect on a recent experience that shifted my perspective in an unexpected way — sitting on the other side of the hospital bed as a mother while my daughter spent a night in the hospital.
The experience made me think about something many healthcare workers quietly navigate: What happens when nurses become patients or family members? How do we show up in those moments? Do we lead with humility and trust, or do we unintentionally intimidate the very staff caring for our loved ones?
I open up about how my mindset has changed throughout my nursing career. As a newer nurse, caring for healthcare workers or their families used to make me nervous and hyperaware. But with experience came a different understanding — one rooted in respect, empathy, and recognizing that every specialty carries its own expertise.
In this episode, we explore: • The pressure nurses feel when caring for other healthcare professionals
• Why some healthcare workers become controlling or overly involved during care
• The emotional reality of being on the receiving end of healthcare
• How vulnerability changes our perspective
• What truly matters most in the patient experience
This conversation is honest, reflective, and a reminder that behind every title, credential, and role is a human being simply wanting to feel safe, heard, and cared for.
Whether you’re a nurse, healthcare worker, patient, or family member, this episode will challenge you to think differently about compassion, professionalism, and what it means to trust one another in healthcare.
