Function Before Title: Recovering APEST for the Whole Body

In Season 9, Episode 2 of the Take Off Podcast, Thomas Clark continues the conversation on APEST and the Collective by challenging listeners to stop treating APEST as titles, offices, ranks, or spiritual status.

APEST was not given so people could chase recognition. It was given so the body of Christ could mature.

Drawing from Ephesians 4:11–13, Thomas explains that apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, and teachers are not meant to become competing titles, but functions of Christ’s ministry expressed through His people for the strengthening of the whole body. The issue is not simply what someone is called. The issue is whether their contribution helps equip the saints, mature the church, and participate in the mission of God.

This episode helps listeners shift from asking, “What am I called?” to asking, “How is Jesus using me to strengthen His body?”

Thomas also explores why every APEST function needs maturity, character, humility, and the fruit of the Spirit. A function is not proven by what a person claims; it is proven by what their contribution strengthens in the body.
