howdy y'all howdy welcome to episode four of porch people we on the porch yeah it's really sunny it was actually thundering about 20 minutes ago and i thought oh they're gonna have another thunder asmr porch people we can only be so hopeful it's like actually sunny now and very humid we are lathered in bug spray also not to mention while it was thundering we were having our pre-production meeting just to give you an insight each of these episodes probably probably takes us like four hours at least yeah because we do a pre-production meeting where we organize our thoughts for the week and what we do we record for hour hour and a half sometimes whatever and then we have to edit this which is part of the reason why we don't do videos because oh my god i can't imagine adding video to this all right let's get into things this week's porch people podcast is sponsored by karen shahed ali stasi and roy wow look at that We got five. We got ads. We got five ads. Five sponsors. You guys remember Karen?$5 ad. From last week, who wanted you to take the train? She forgot to tell us she has a business plug, so she bought another$5 shout out. Karen helps mission-driven leaders figure out how to use AI effectively and ethically to amplify their good work. You can get your free mission-first AI starter kit with an AI use policy template, safe start prompt pack, a vendor evaluation Heck yeah! Okay, a lot of people are all wagging a finger in your face when it comes to AI, but here is your chance to do AI the right way. If you're somebody that worries about the environment, chat GPT, AI, ethically, morally, everything like that, she has the hookup on how to do it the right way. Karen's extremely smart. She's up there with the top three smartest people I know. And her brother, Andy, would be the other one of the smartest people I know. Absolutely. Thank you, Karen. Yeah, thank you, Karen. So this week we went to our first estate sale in the South. Ooh, it was a good one. It was a good one. I've only been to a handful of estate sales in general just because, I don't know, something about going into like somebody else's house is a little freaky for me. Especially knowing that like they probably just died. Yeah. But not the case. Your grandpa had an estate sale Well, he didn't die. That is true. He just sold his house and he's like, I don't need all this stuff. That's true. That's true. That's a better way to look at it. Right. Right. I'm pretty sure the guy's not alive, though, because he had a lot of guns. I feel like a living man wouldn't give up his guns like that. It was it was very interesting. It was what? Friday morning. Yep. Friday morning. We drove a little outside of town. There were I did not expect to see so many people. Yeah, we roll up and the street was 50 people. Yes. Tons of cars parked in the street. tons of people walking in you walk in and there's like a line of people waiting to pay for some things i just was like whoa is this how they all are i don't know i have no idea i don't think i've ever been to an estate sale anywhere ever yeah it was uh it was it was interesting there was there was a lot of interesting people there and i couldn't tell if they were just regular degular people like us or if this was like their mission like if they were pickers i was thinking the same thing i i don't know i really couldn't tell some people you like i was listening to people in line as they were checking out and they were an negotiating and I was like that sounds like a pro yeah but I'm not really sure what else was there I forgot um well there was that room in the basement where it looked like the that 70s show yes set yeah they had a green couch and like a matching green like armchair thing it was like a very table in there yeah the wood panel walls shag carpet yes like the orange shag carpet for real shag carpet yeah it was cool everything in the whole house had a price tag on it they had I've never seen so much a alabama memorabilia in one household like a lot there was like and they were nice like 10 or so i didn't even actually look at that part well it's because it was you didn't see it because the long line was next to it what was it what is it like it's like all it's almost all nick saban and paul bear bryant they're all they all had the red um border around them so it's pictures yeah they're pictures but they were like signed and they had like specific championship games on it and like yeah i'm a big bama fan but i'm not good with like dates and players and stuff like that so championship games years I recognize some of them but not all of them yeah how much was it going for I think it was like they're around like a hundred each okay yeah and the more expensive ones I assume mean more how much were the guns I did not look at the price tag I get freaked out by guns yeah like I like I don't mind people having guns and you know we even talked about maybe getting one since we're homeowners but like I don't know they just they scare me yeah it's a lot they were not little guns like the gun at the flea market they were like rifles yeah they were long range this is a hunting man he had oh my god and his closet you see his closet all of his um all of his clothes he had everything was camo yes and then he had like multiple pairs of shoes that were all the same yeah and he had multiple pair of the same camo shirt so he's he was a um probably took his inspiration from mark zuckerberg being like i wear the same thing every day oh yeah i'm sure that was his inspo and he was like i don't want to decision fatigue so i'm going to pick out this camo shirt and these specific slip-on shoes and then probably some pants that reminds me I had a TA in college in my photography class his name is Bruce and he always had on like the full uh navy blue is it Dickies yeah Dickies like suit you know like people wear when they're like like a mechanic mechanics yes and I asked him one day it probably sounded rude in hindsight I was like why do you wear the same thing every day he goes because this company I think is Dickies yeah he's like Dickies has a lifetime warranty on all their clothes. And if this gets worn out, I just send it back and I get a new one. And I was like, respect, honestly. Life hack. Yeah, well, that guy definitely wore the same thing every day. Let's also talk about the Foodland Flea Market, which, of course, we went to again. Yeah, of course. I think we're going to go to that every single weekend. I want to go every weekend. I would like to go, too. Because I don't want to miss out on any deals. Yeah, we got a couple good deals. Okay, first of all, our guy that was supposed to come back he was supposed to get me a vcr and elisa antenna no showed yeah what the heck we got stood up what is his name mark no brian dave oh i forget uh music man yeah yeah yeah so he he said he was gonna come back and he didn't but i kind of don't blame him because it was very hot we were there at like and there was like a third of the amount of people it was hot and oh oh some guy told us why people weren't there there was a a show i uh um it was a nine one 9-1-1 festival yep in the town close by because I guess the first 9-1-1 call ever recorded was from this small town in Alabama yeah he said it was a lady who her chickens got out and she called 9-1-1 to help them round up her chickens so unfortunately the food land flea market was competing slim pickings with the 9-1-1 festival so and we didn't get the invite soon enough I would have 100% gone to the 9-1-1 festival yeah we also missed a gun show that was last weekend too I would not have gone to that would you have gone to that yeah okay well you're on your own there why wouldn't I go to a gun show in Alabama are you kidding me okay but speaking of guns we did get a weed eater it's long it's long like a gun like it could be a weapon okay anyway we did get a weed eater and we haven't really used it yet she got that for us for a good deal$80 he wanted$150 I mean that's a good negotiation right there almost was a little nervous because Sidney said negotiate in Spanish because he's Latino and I for sure you like if you've ever been to Mexico as soon as you like let them know that like you're Mexican too or whatever they're kind of give you a little bit of a discount I mean they're still making their living for sure but it's like la gente de la gente you know oh my god it was so funny Elisa was negotiating and Elisa hates negotiating she's not very good at it okay but she negotiates with them all in Spanish and then she's like oh it's too high whatever so we walk away we get about I don't know 10 yards yeah and the guy goes gringa and I'm like bitch and he like whistles at us he like whistles at us and we like turn around and he's like okay because he said nothing lower than 100 and we were like oh well we only have 80 sorry I thought it was funny though that's how he called us back I'm like that's kind of rude but also that's true yeah he was like fine give me 80 bucks yeah yeah so we got that at the at the flea market and I got a shirt a Harley Davidson shirt and let me tell you at Kobe's swap meet that would have been 20 bucks$25 or$30 with all these hipster little kids going to the Goodwill and finding these name brand shirts and then charging triple. It definitely would have been$25 or$30. And I got it for$3. Hell yeah. And then we also got some hats. It was in a box of hats, like kind of trucker hat. I think they were one for three and two for five. Yep. Yeah. Amazing. You got five bucks worth of hats. Yeah. So we got two hats, a shirt and a weed eater at the flea market. And then we ran into this girl that was there because she was like, I took a picture of Sydney with her weed eater. And this girl was like, hell yeah. She was like into it. And then we were kind of talking to her. She's like, you got to go right over here across the parking lot. Literally, this big parking lot. Right across the way, there's a place called Jack's Deals. Jack's Dollar Deals. Jack's Dollar Deals. And she's like, you got to go over there. And then she just like told us all about it. Basically, they have like, well, okay. It's like a warehouse-y vibe. And the person, Jack, I guess. We didn't know this going into it. Yeah, because I've seen a long line out there before. People literally sitting down. and waiting in a really long line and I remember thinking like what's that but you know I didn't do any digging and then anyway come to find out this is a store they get like Amazon items that are not picked up or not delivered properly I guess I don't know it's a lot of stuff's in boxes still Amazon boxes and they have different days so like Thursdays I think it's everything in there is 50 cents and you have to dig they're like giant bins you're just digging yeah and everyone's around yeah Friday's a dollar and then it goes up I think we were there it's 50 cents a dollar and then a three dollar day right 50 cents a dollar three that makes sense because yeah we were there on saturday it was three dollars yeah three dollars of an item and the items there were things that you would probably just assume were there there's like random phone cases there's like christmas decor there's like a tripod there's like expired um food yeah food and snacks and stuff there's like one there's like hair products yeah there's a lot of random things and I we went there on the three dollar day and I didn't really find much I got like I thought I would get like a bronzer because makeup's really expensive so I was like okay but we didn't do it right she said you literally need to camp out there overnight she said that she would go there I don't know if it was her friend or whatever but they put a chair out like in the line of chairs there's people waiting and then sleep in your car yeah when they open at whatever time it's like 10 it's like 10 o'clock she's like nobody'll get your spot if you got your chair there I was like say less oh my god but then I got to sleep in my car like what well we're down the street we just leave our chairs there and leave i get it because 50 cents for some of those items is a great deal i would be like wow yeah let's do it but three dollars is a little like yeah we yeah we got to check it out we haven't checked it out yet well we did the one day but it was we got to do it on like a 50 cent day or a dollar day right hayley was with us by the way my sister we were doing all this stuff she came all around with us she's just you know she's such a little sister she just like she just tags along yeah i'm like we're gonna do this she's like all right let's go We, but when we were waiting for the, um, the food land flea market to expand because there weren't very many people there, you know, come to find out they're all at the 911 event. Uh, we decided let's go look at yard sales, you know, until it gets more crowded. So we drove around looking for yard sales and it was so easy to find yard sales. Honestly, how many do we go to? Three to four, four or five. I don't know. Like, like within five miles. Yes. Um, we definitely did the, the method of finding them with the, the street sign. You know, they put the sign down this way address boom and then we'd be going down to try and find one we'd see another one we'd pull over then we'd find one and then the next door neighbor was having one right there too and then all this stuff so we went to some we went to some yard sales and they were pretty legit i would say they were a typical yard sale they were fun i got a table for my mom my mom likes to sit outside on her carport and sit on her laptop but she has it in her lap so she's always like hunched over i'm like mom put it on a good table so i got her a little table another thing that we did see at those uh those yard sales too was um this girl selling lemonade do you remember that girl and she just did not seem very happy yeah she was probably like 10 years old I would say and I always like for me because we were like oh lemonade oh my god this is so great like you think of it as happy yeah yeah yeah and then she like nobody was sitting there and then we're like oh okay I guess she's taking a break and then she like came over all like begrudgingly came over I guess and then like sat down and we were like hi how much for the lemonade she said a dollar I was like A dollar? That seems kind of high for this lemonade here. But Sydney was like, support the kids. What? Hashtag. I thought that was a great deal. I thought it was a lot. A dollar? That's like regular price lemonade. What? You can't even buy gum for a dollar. It's like$1.49. You think so? Am I out of touch with my lemonade sales? I honestly thought she was going to say$2. Really? But after I tasted it, a dollar was too much. It wasn't very good. Also, no customer service. She did not crack a smile. I know. I know. I think her parents were making her do that. They're like, get us some money. Yeah, we're having a yard sale. Why don't you go out there and let me just take the simply made lemonade and put it in this container and then put it in this cup and sell it. Bless her heart. Yeah. She's like, this is not what I want to do on my Saturday morning, mom. Oh, one thing I also did want to say about the yard sale is a little disappointed because before the weekend, we were looking for yard sales on Facebook Marketplace and Sydney teased me with a yard sale that said if you come between like 9-11. It was 11. 11 and 1. 11 and 1, you get a free hot dog. And I was like, oh my God, we have to go. They took that ad down so fast though because I went to find it. It was gone. They were probably like, this is too much hot dogs. They were probably getting swarmed with the hot dogs. People were like, for real? Like a hot dog? But what a great way to get people to come to your yard sale. Free hot dog. Much better than the lemonade for a dollar. I hope now it's my, one of my southern bucket list is to go to a yard sale with free food. If we have anyone in the Shoals listening to this podcast right now and you want to have a yard sale and you throw in some free hot dogs Guaranteed sales. Listen, we're marketing professionals, okay? Yep. Guaranteed sales. Guaranteed. Because if I'm getting a free hot dog, I'm more inclined to be like, you know what? Let me get this fan for$5. Yeah, I'm not even going to haggle it. I got that free hot dog. Hot dog. Right. That's worth at least$1.25. Costco. Is that the price? I think so. Where did I get that? What is it?$2.25? I don't know. I think it's$1.25. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And they're big, too. So hopefully next weekend we find some with some free stuff. We found some things. Facebook Marketplace stuff this week, too. I'm so good at Facebook Marketplace now, y'all. Yeah, we did. It's a mid-century modern set. Dresser. There's four pieces. There's a tall dresser, a wide dresser with a big mirror on it, a bed frame for a bed that's too small for us, so I'm probably going to sell that. I'm going to break up the family. And then a side table. Oh, yeah, a side table. All for?$300. They wanted$600. They did? Yeah, they had marked it down to$400, and then I said, would you let it go for$300 And she said, yes. I said, bet. I'm going to rent the U-Haul right now. And I did. I rented a U-Haul. The U-Haul, they like Noah's now. Yep, yep. We don't have a good truck, so we're using that for everything. And then when we got there, they were a very, very nice couple, older couple. So sweet. And it was cute because I could tell that the guy really wanted to tell us the story about, he's like, well, let me get into the story. My aunt, great aunt. No, great grandmother. Oh, okay. I thought it was an aunt situation. Was it? Okay. Made this. I don't know. uh he had this handmade in uh illinois or something like that indiana indiana and then i was we were like oh okay cool but he just really wanted to tell us like the history of it and mahogany i think it looks like it was handmade and it looked really nice it's a great deal great yeah great finishings on it good deal and since we already like had the truck i was like what else can i find that can fit in a truck so i found this like storage six-piece storage locker like school yard kind of vibes that I also got from my office. We're slowly working on the house, making it a home. We don't have enough furniture for a house. We have apartment-sized furniture, so these kinds of things that we're slowly bringing in are very necessary. It's nice. It doesn't feel like we're in a long, empty hallway. Yeah, as soon as we put these dressers in the house, it was like, okay, this is getting a little cozy. Okay, okay. It doesn't really fit all the way, but it's good enough. We got some things in here. It's not empty. We're making moves. We had a contractor come out this week too oh yeah i felt like a big girl house owner when that happened yeah i was like oh a contractor's coming yeah shout out monica shout out monica and shout out jessica for the referral yes and she came through because we're trying to get one of our half we have a one and a half bath and the half bath is in the back of the house and we want it converted to a full bath because the way you make your property worth more is your bathrooms and kitchens obviously turning that into a full bathroom will be amazing but also the middle bathroom i I was going to say. And if you remember from the last episode that we've been talking about how our middle bathroom has holes in the bathtub, which can't be good. I'm stressed every time I take a shower. Yeah. Every time. And we don't really like that bathroom. So as soon as soon as we get that new bathroom remodel, it'll be much better and we can dive into whatever's underneath this tub. Are you stressed when you're taking a shower? Because every time I'm in there, I keep picturing like I'm visualizing myself just like falling through the tub and the tub like like making my ankles bleed because, you know. Oh, my God. I know. That's a lot. I don't envision that, but I do envision lifting up the tub and the whole floor is like black mold. A hundred percent. It's going to be black mold. Yeah. So, but that's, that's a bridge we'll cross when we get there. That's, that's fine. But for now we have a contractor and she came and looked at that other random projects. She was super duper nice. Um, great vibes all around. Um, she talked to us in our kitchen for a while. Uh, her husband came, her son, the whole family basically like came out to like look at the projects. that we have around and we also have that big project we want to do the Airbnb in the backyard yes that Airbnb I knew her eyes lit up with that because we were like we want to turn this garage into a full functioning one bedroom Airbnb and she was like heck yeah it's gonna be a cool project also just as a contractor I'm sure that's nice because it's like oh here's a lot of work yeah and her husband went up into the attic because that that garage has this like creepy attic up top that we haven't looked at because like hello who the fuck wants to go look at a dark attic up there not me so we were like oh yeah there's an attic but we haven't looked at it and her husband just walks on up there and he's like oh yeah and he's like talking about how we can lift the ceiling up and expose the beams and then i'm like sydney go up there yeah go look he made me brave i felt like okay i can look now that you're up there first yeah and it wasn't scary at all it was actually our attic in our house is probably way creepier with all the insulation and stuff got it because that one didn't need it because it's a garage good to know yeah so now we know it's in the her daughter does like nails so she dropped the plug for her daughter being like oh she does nails and i was like oh my god i need my nails done i need to find a nail person so i'm in and her daughter's like 17 right yes it was a great she did a great job yes imagine having a full-on like trade like that when you're 17 i know i think i asked her too i was like where do you get most of your clients from and she's like my mom i was like i don't doubt that at all because her mom's contracting all these places going to see all these people everything i was like good for you and and they her they have like a nail salon like at their house so it's like a little extra little studio super cute comfortable but i've never had like a nail tech like that i've always just gone to like salons so having like an individual girl that like okay savannah's my girl you know i'm gonna go get my nails on her i feel like normally they cost like 100 bucks i was gonna say it was cheaper right it wasn't expensive it was 40 bucks that's a great deal but it's more if you want to do like designs yeah i was gonna ask what is it if you want design because i want to get i still want to get the little fishing lures on my I think it's like$10 per nail extra. Per nail? Yeah. Oh, never mind. Yeah. Never mind. Well, I mean, some designs are easier than others, but yeah. We still need to find a hair person. Yeah. I haven't my hair. I just got a haircut, but I haven't found one here yet. Yeah. Shout out Shahed. At, at, at, at, at.$5 at. Shahed, Shahed, Shahed. Shahed of hair, which is her Instagram. Yeah, at. Okay. Our girl Shahed in San Diego. literally made she like upped our beauty game yeah she changed my life we went from like you know a little above average to like we're foxes now okay we got bangs we got layers foxes foxy ladies i can't get over foxes foxes um but yes shahed is a great hair dresser hair stylist what's it called hair cutter yeah hair cutter i like cutter hair she's a great cutter um i picked her initially because i wanted somebody edgy and modern and looks like they do good current work because sometimes when I look at hairdressers on Instagram, everyone looks the same and Shahed's does not. So that's why I picked her. Yeah, she does a really good job and such a good job that we travel across the country just to get a haircut right now. We did. So if you're in San Diego, North Park, The Lab. The Lab. The right next to Fat Boys. So get yourself a haircut with Shahed and then go next door to Fat Boys Deli and get yourself a good deli sandwich Amen. Slay. Should we open our Uncrustables right now? Oh my god, I was literally just sitting here thinking I really want to eat that. Let's do it. We're actively trying to find all of our watering holes, vendors, places to go, places to eat, people to hang out with. So far, I got my nail girl. We got our flea market. We got our flea market. We got our, you know, compared to Kobe's, like, I don't know, like, it's going to be hard going back to Kobe's swap meet after this one. No way. I feel like some of the deals are so good. The deals, yes, but there's more volume at Kobe's. There's more to look at. I want to see this flea market pop in on, like, the busy, like, I feel like we haven't seen it at its prime. 100%. 100%. But it's still our go-to flea market. We're still looking for hair, like we said. We got our coffee shop, Groundhog. Groundhog. Shout out Groundhog. Our wine spot, The Carriage. The Carriage. And we're going to get more on that in just a second. But great wine. Our walking trail. Ooh, the TVA trails are beautiful. I need to go on there more, like be running on those. We have our barbecue spot, which we can talk about in a little bit. Ooh, yes. We have more info on barbecue in just a second do we have our lawn care guy because okay the lawn care is so i'm like okay what is up with the lawn so confused what's happening our lawnmower and we've mowed our lawn but then leon next door just keeps on mowing the side closest to his house maybe maybe he wants our lawn to look like his lawn so it's the biggest area of our lawn so i'm like if you want to mow the huge area of our lawn be my guest but i just want to like know right is this like a are we going to keep doing this yeah or is it He just does it. He doesn't tell us. Like last week he did it after we did it. Like literally Elisa mowed the lawn. And then the next day he mowed the lawn. I'm like, bro, it's mowed. Yeah. And then he mowed it yesterday. And then I was like, all right, well, I'm going to mow the other side parts of our lawn. But we need to know. But yeah, I don't know. I guess our lawn care is still TBD. We're figuring out the system for that. Whenever I post that on Instagram, like our neighbors mow our lawn again, everyone's like, just let them. I know. And some people like pay them. And I'm like, I'm not going to pay them. I bought my own lawnmower. But I did make him cookies. I am going to bring them to him. Actually, I'm going to do that right when we're done with this. Yeah, good call. Can't wait for the update. What else have we found around town? I feel like that's all we've really found. We're still looking for a lot of spots. We're looking for a really nice restaurant that's like good food, like a good steak, good salmon, like a good spot that you can go to where you're like, I want a good meal. But it needs to be a vibe. That's also vibes. Yeah. Yes. Because like the lighting and the hard chairs or maybe it's like the way things are too spread out or too close together there's just you know there's a perfect recipe for a great dining experience whether you're having drinks or whether you're eating food and like we have not found said place yet some of these places I've noticed like in the south and in Texas are so big like like it's too big like they just do those basic chairs the one the metal ones that you're thinking about right now in your head I already know you know the ones and then like a bunch of tables just spread out and then like I don't know just that's it there's like nothing else in there yeah and then like maybe the there's like no art or the art is just you know they bought it at like Hobby Lobby or something yeah I don't know or maybe maybe it's all a vibe and then they have like picnic wooden benches with no backs yeah uncomfortable yeah we need to be comfortable yeah or sometimes it's a vibe and then you look at the food and the food is like all fried on dude like it looks like I just put I plated that at my house. Hold on. This guy's belt is so loud. I'm sorry. There's a guy that drove. No shade to him. He needs a new belt. Isn't that what it's called? Yeah. There's a guy that drove in our driveway the other day and asked me about our lawn care, and I was like, well, we got it figured out. Got that handled, okay? Yeah. Double time. I was like, not another third party coming in to ask us about our lawn. Listen, everyone, I don't know what's up with our lawn, but we're going to figure it out. We're also actively searching for a fishing hole we need to find like the perfect spot where we catch a lot of fish and nobody knows about it I kind of have a feeling that we're not going to find that until we get a boat

SPEAKER_01:

okay

SPEAKER_00:

we want a little dinghy you know like 300 bucks or less yeah the one with the little motor that like just goes in and it's like oh that's better than the sound that I made yeah oh we're looking for burgers oh yes Jessica told me about a smash burger food truck thing but it's like in different places all the time I would like to try them out. And Savannah told me about the Shoals Shack. Who's Savannah? Our nail girl. Oh, I don't know her name. I haven't met her. Dang. Sorry, Savannah. She told me about the Shoals Shack and she said that they got burgers and chicken sandwiches. And I was like, that's really funny that you told me about this because I'm looking for a burger spot. Okay. Well, we got to try the Shoals Shack. We're also actively looking for Mexican food because Casa Mexicana was not it. Like, that was not it. So we have to find another place. Yeah. And an ice cream spot too. Ooh. Because we You shouldn't say the places we don't like. This is a small town, okay? I mean, I feel like that was implied. Yeah, I think you're right. Okay, I won't say any more names, but... Sorry if you want Casa Mexicana. But we have tried a couple of ice cream spots, and we won't mention where, but wasn't very... They're mid. They're mid. I miss Salt-N-Straw. I miss Salt-N-Straw and Stella Jeans. Oh, my gosh. If you're listening, eat some Stella Jean for me this weekend, please. Yeah, or Salt-N-Straw. Or Salt-N-Straw. I think the thing is, we, you know... you could have the purity ice cream or the blue bell ice cream, but you can buy that in the grocery store. I want gourmet. I want like, I want to go in and just be surprised at these new flavors and be like, exactly. Even though I know that I'm going to get chocolate and mint chip, maybe cookie dough. I still want to try. Oh, I try all the, I get different. He tries all of them every time. She's like, hi, I'm in your establishment now and I'm going to try everything. And I always say, I want to try all the new ones. Yeah. They're always like, no worries. And then in their head, I know they're like, Oh, Oh my God, this is literally their job. They're used to it. I know, but they're still like, but I'm the one that's like, hey, can I try this one that I think I might like? And then I'm like, you know what? Double chocolate, mint chip, split scoop, single piece. I'm not in a gourmet ice cream shop to be shy. I'm in a gourmet ice cream shop to taste all the ice creams and then purchase one. You know what? You're right. One time they had, Salt and Straw had, it was like a Thanksgiving special and they were all different Thanksgiving flavors. And one was like stuffing, wait, dressing. Yeah, stuffing or dressing or whatever. and cranberry with like a rosemary, I think. That was really good. I don't know why it was so good. It was so good. Yeah. It's a lesson to actually try them for sure. Yeah. So anyone got an ice cream spot in the Shoals? Let us know. And if it's Bluebell or Purity, I'm just not with it. I don't know what that is, but me neither. It's just a generic brand. You can buy it at Foodland. Foodland. Oh, we got to find a grocery store. Foodland. Okay. Guys, guys. Okay. We're back with the Foodland saga. I went back into another Foodland and i'm just telling you it's just it's just odd is that the right jeopardy what's the one that's like you're right you're right you're right my bad my bad wrong jingle i went back and i don't know it's just old decor like fluorescent lights and i don't know that the the cashiers they just they just smile at you and when you're that when you're done she's like have a blessed day and i'm just like what it does feel like you're in a um a Black Mirror episode every time but I'm and every time okay I'm not even kidding you every single I'm not exaggerating okay every single time I've been in Foodland there's one song playing when I enter and the same song is playing when I leave either I am freaked out when I'm in there and time stretches like really long but it's fast or I'm I don't know what it is but like it's always the same song I feel like that's weird it is weird it's like a time warp it could be a nominal space look that up on TikTok and you'll get sucked in it's just like a it's like an in-between space between dimensions and shit like that. Ooh. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's giving stranger things. We go to Foodland because it's right down the street and they do have good prices. And we go to Publix, which is where my sister works. Sorry, Haley, I just told the world where you work, but it's kind of expensive. It is. It is a little pricey. Haley got the coupon hookup, but like she's not texting me the coupon. So I get there and I forget about the coupons and then I just spend too much money on groceries. Groceries are the same price here in San Diego. Fun fact. Yes. I'm pretty sure. There's no difference there's not they're not cheaper i i i've been waiting for that moment to find out like okay if i do a full grocery haul is it cheaper here than in san diego no and honestly our grocery experience just might be driving an hour to huntsville to go to trader joe's yeah and yeah monica told us that there's sprouts over there too so oh yeah and there's a costco and there's a costco not that we get groceries from costco we don't but but we need to start getting tp there because we don't have your parents giving us free toilet paper and paper towels anymore. Right. We're still looking for a good trade also. Yeah, we were really in our trade era in San Diego. We had a trade with Drift Cafe. Shout out Alex and Spencer. Love them. Love you guys. That was a free shout out. Yeah, you're welcome, bitch. Yeah, you know what? Actually, it wasn't free. I owed Spencer because I was trying to get our espresso maker machine thing working the other day. He was on call. I was sending him videos like, can you help me? And he actually, he helped me. We problem solved. We fixed it. Sort of. Mm-hmm. It still would be better if he touched it with his magic hands. Right. Of course. Why did I say that? I just agree and move on. Drift. And then we had Perform PT. Yeah. They really helped your physical therapy. Oh, my God. I love them. Amazing. Trevor and Hannah and Claire. You guys are awesome. Yes. And then we had Aces High, obviously, for a trade. But we need more. We need some trades. we need one here i mean i would love to trade home improvement contractors yeah monica if you're listening plumber yeah yeah any plumbers or electricians or anything like that please please we've already asked for an architect no bites yet no bites on the architect yeah we can do website photos video social media come on i tried to trade my photography services on facebook marketplace yesterday for a truck the person goes no thanks need another vehicle that's really funny at least they answer me they entertained it like you know what sorry no oh and also you need a gym i do i've been trying i tried uh planet fitness like i said you need a gym not me did you i know right no i've i tried some and i figured out the thing okay guys this is so weird to me you go on the map any map and you type in gym and you find all these gyms right like in san diego like you can find fit you can find like anything you want there but here you type in gym and there'll be search results but they don't have any photos and they don't have any like it looks like they're abandoned businesses like to be fair that's almost everything you search here yes and it's and it's confusing because when I look at it I think oh this doesn't exist or maybe this is like somebody's like home gym type of thing or like side business or something it might it must not be like a public gym but then last week I was like okay let me click around a little bit more and I found that they have to scroll down and get to their website where I'm like oh they actually do have a And then I'm like, oh, I found their Facebook and has this. So like it was a mission trying to now I have some gyms that I think I can go to because I finally found some. But I'm still looking. Facebook's the place to find everything here, which is the which is why I'm on Facebook. Yes. Speaking of gyms, our friend Allie. Just bought a gym in San Diego on Friars Road. Nine round kickboxing. You can get a free 30 minute full body kickboxing workout on your first workout with them. follow them on ig at nine round sd underscore friars for more deals and details that's at the number nine round sd underscore friars heck yeah dude they bought that place like out of nowhere i feel like they kept that secret and then all of a sudden ali and lewis bought a gym and they made it their own and they just renovated it and they had like an opening day party and a bunch of people came out they got so many friends yes i was like oh my god yeah yeah but that That is a good spot. Like literally, if you're in San Diego, Friars over there, like in that little strip mall area, kind of by the golf course. It's a good, it's a good deal because kickboxing and all that stuff is really expensive. Yeah. It's a family. I support this message. Me too. Yeah. It's a family owned business and honestly like great, great people. You guys, you guys should check them out. They're building their empire. Let's talk about the new barbecue spot we found. My mouth will start watering. First of all, it's amazing. Let me just tell you the downsides of it. First of all, downsides. Yeah. Yeah. They're only open one day a week. Oh. Saturdays. Facts. They're like pop-up vibes, I guess. Which is kind of cool from a marketing perspective, creating the hype. I agree. They're not just available. It's like, oh, only Saturday. They are out of this world. They're called Fourth Planet Barbecue. This is not an ad, but they really were out of this world. We're used to pulled pork. We're used to pulled pork here. Got the hot mustard slaw. They're doing it different. The guy who owns it, he's from Texas. Freaking nicest guy ever. So nice. So nice. It's all brisket for the most part they have other things too but the pulled pork yeah but the brisket's what's out of this world it was so good no really it was so good we actually we went because i randomly started about this on the last podcast we said we were gonna go to a try a new barbecue spot and that's when i asked you do you know what the fourth planet was oh yeah i forgot you're right repeat the jingle yeah i bought uh mercury to go to visit venus how on earth can i afford to go to mars jumping jupiter saturn said is saturday uranus and nudge are selling pluto's cars hey for trade um yeah so that's where we went the we went to singing river brewery and they had a little music thing going on brewery on one side music on the other fourth planet fourth planet was pop up right there they got elote which was okay this is what we got this was our order we got brisket uh-huh and then we got pulled pork and then we got elote mac and cheese and then we got mac and cheese and And then he was so nice, he handed us a cowboy, what's it called? A cowboy Twinkie or something? Cowboy Twinkie? What's it called? I think it's called a cowboy Twinkie. Yeah, which is a jalapeno pepper with brisket inside. And cheese. And cheese. Wrapped in bacon. It was all amazing. It was really good. 10 out of 10. Honestly, the best barbecue that I've tasted so far. I'm still open to finding new barbecue spots, but I'm going to be returning back to Fourth Planet and it's going to be amazing. It's so funny. I'm so loyal to the barbecue. you in this area that I want to fight you on that but like it was it was honestly I mean it was really good but also like some of these places locally barely give you any meat and they like I don't know I just thought style though okay of the pulled pork and and I don't know if people do brisket here I definitely didn't grow up eating brisket really yeah it's a Texas thing I mean I'm sure other places do it too but it's definitely more Texas thing than Alabama well it was phenomenal it was very good the same that was on Friday and the same day How did you like the Singing River Brewery? The beer? By the way, we're not beer people, really. We used to really be beer people. But I don't know. I became allergic to everything. I am allergic to beer all of a sudden. I really can't drink it. But I really like to taste it still. And I like to buy it for other people. I bought my mom like a 12-pack of Modelo yesterday. Modelo is good. I just like to live vicariously through other people drinking it. I thought it tasted really good. We don't have anything like that around here until they came along. How much was it, the flight? Wasn't it like$4? No, it was more than that. I think it was like$9. It was delicious and it was cheap. Yeah, it was really good. We also went to First Fridays, same night. Yep. We had an outing. It was a vibe. It was so fun. There was a stage set up on, what's that street called right there? Mobile Street? The Cobblestone Street? Sure. Why are you asking me? I don't know. I just thought you would know because that's what the carriage is on. You looked at me like I live here. Anyway, there's a stage set up on the Cobble stone street right there by court street i think it's called mobile street and there was uh lots of vendors people selling food and jewelry and stuff like that it was really cute there was tons of people older people a lot of young people walking around just it was really warm it was a really hot day there was also like there's a park there wilson park and there was a whole music thing going on there everyone had their lawn chairs and little tables out probably drinking wine i would like to assume i didn't get close enough to see but we should do that We should bring a bottle of wine and sit there. It was a vibe. It was a vibe. When my mom comes to visit, we're definitely taking her to First Fridays. Oh, yeah. Assuming she visits on the first Friday of the month. Lori, if you're listening, got to come at the beginning of the month. Yep. Speaking of the carriage, we also went there on Monday. We had a wine tasting and it was free. It was free. We can't get over that it was free. Like literally. And also good thing Sydney trusted her instinct because she's like wine tasting from like six to seven or something like that. And I was like, OK, so are we leaving at six? And she's like, no, I think we need to leave. earlier because I think it starts at six and I was like oh so it's like a structured tasting she's like I think so I just we get in we walk in we're like the last ones in there everyone had just moved into this area where there's a bar and there was like a presentation of this these Italian wines and we were like oh heck yeah they gave us a little card of like the tester yeah you could you could take notes on it the guy would tell you about each wine and then he would walk around and give everyone a tasting by the end of it I was buzzed it was so fun I was not I drove but it was a great time I I'm a lightweight and we were definitely the youngest ones in there oh by far there was nobody close to our age I was like we're literally by a college okay UNA hello hello children yeah hello over 21 children why are you legally of drinking age unresponsible adults but responsible drinkers why are you not scoring the free wine on Mondays at the carriage I do not understand I know and we got really into it we started taking like samples of stuff and And writing down all the tasting notes, trying to get all bougie with it. We were standing next to the owner, Caleb. Yeah, he's cool. Yeah. They're really, really nice over there. Oh, my God. I want to talk about the Courier Journal. Yeah, what is this? You got one and then... Well, mom told me about the Courier Journal because I told her that we wanted to find like yard sales and estate sales. And she's like, oh, you need to look in the Courier Journal. And you know how like when your mom tells you something, sometimes you're just like, okay, mom, whatever. That's kind of how I felt. Yeah. But then I was like thinking about it later. Like I was, I was mulling over my mother's words to me and I thought, you know what? People probably do list yard sales in this courier journal that she's talking about. And then like fate would have it the next day. We got a copy of the courier journal in the mailbox and I start flipping through it and it is hilarious. Like people can put, people can like put ads in it and they can write like whatever they want, like opinion pieces and stuff. Also people are listing like, you know, it's like classified. So truck needed, uh, this, for sale this job available whatever I haven't seen it yet wait hold on actually let me get it I'm gonna get it I'm gonna read you some first page I flipped to is the food land ads here I'll give that to you oh there are some good deals in here what's on the back of that anything interesting I don't know okay there's two sections in the courier journal that I found to be amusing there's one section that's called your letters and I think just oh actually here your courier journal welcomes taste presented typed or neatly written letters to publish as space allows okay the first one it's titled buy from all caps from america buy from america what are you talking about i'm reading the headline of the letter that someone wrote buy like see you later no beat no like purchase buy from oh someone's saying like buy american made yes got it yes but it's called buy from from all caps america okay editor after 77 years of life i wonder what has happened to our republic president trump and the gop message to the people of america is america first but the american people run to the stores to buy all the things made in foreign countries that hate america in the case of one china of course we are supporting their quest to dominate every country on the face of the earth and it just goes on that's really intense it's so intense but the funniest part of this is not this guy's opinion because whatever it's that it's the headline clearly says tastefully presented time to really fit letters tastefully and the first one is buy from america yeah amazing blasphemy right at the start um and then the other section i really like is called strange but true where they just list strange but true facts oh give me one okay the very first one a bangkok restaurant has been serving customers from a perpetual stew that has been cooking for more than four decades full stop what do you mean where that's it here's another one oh my god and in 1996 two neighbors in Nice. There you go. And that is just a little glimpse into the Courier Journal. What else is in there? You know, ads for sports leagues, insurance ads. There's little funny pages. Oh, there's like advertisements for churches in here. Churches need to advertise? Yeah, hold on. Actually, I saw one. That's funny. Let's see if I can find it. Oh, right. Is that the... Cost of everything? Go back a page. Oh, yeah. Classified. Sell it fast with a red line ad. Four lines. So I think that means if you're going to have a yard sale, it's$5.50 a week to advertise in here. Heck yeah. There's a commercial rate of$8 a week. Should we put the podcast in here? While we're making fun of the Courier Journal in the Courier Journal. We're not making fun of it. We're just saying, wow, this is crazy. I'm making fun of it a little bit. Some of it's kind of like, I don't know, dated. Let us know. know if we should put a porch people podcast in the courier we're cheaper just whenever i just want to point that out facts our ads are cheaper than the courier journal folks you heard it here period here's another five dollar ad from stasi wow great deal great deal basically stasi is amazing honestly yeah she just wanted us to say how great her and her business are and honestly no notes they're great juniper and honey denver flower design aa plus stasi as a person in individual friend neighbor colleague a plus a plus i wish so badly she lived here because i would buy flowers for my house like weekly yeah she needs to expand stas you hear that we want you to come to alabama hey don't be a turtle speed on over to juniper and honey on south broadway in denver go stasi i think that it's time to tell everyone the sad news what happened with wildwood well you know they don't want to hire me as their bartender pretty producer cue the boo noise to them but how dare you it's okay honestly they weren't even like I didn't respond to like a for hire they weren't hiring I just went in there and said hey hire me as a bartender and then they kind of thought about it for a second and I guess they thought no so I'm gonna just continue to apply to other bartending positions Sydney planted a freaking seed in my head bro if you want to get like in infiltrate us from the inside tell us to start a business because that is how we spiral that's how we get off subject that's how we do it's probably why we're here for real so sydney's like start your own bar and i was like no i'm not gonna like start my own bar that's kind of crazy right but then i just pointed out like there's a need for like there's a need for a cocktail bar specifically in this area like i'm talking if you're in san diego consortium holdings vibes right like that maximalist what are you doing i'm standing up because there's a big beetle flying towards us. What is a bee? Sorry, sorry. Anyway, like I was saying, like that maximalist vibe that you get when you walk into just a well decorated, cool designed place. Keyword, hipster. Hipster. There's nothing hipster here. I want something Instagrammable, you know what I'm saying? Yeah, there's not much of that here. So when Sydney said that, I was like, no, that's kind of crazy. And then I started talking to ChatGPT about how to open a bar in Alabama, Muscle Shoals, Alabama That's crazy. Let me talk to my robot. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was like, how much is a liquor license in Alabama? Guess what it said. First of all, what is it in California? It's definitely like about$20,000. I mean, it ranges from like$20,000. It depends on the type of liquor, what the establishment serves. What if you're like in San Francisco? I think it's like$50,000 or something like that or$100,000 for a liquor license. And what is it here in Alabama?$300.$300? hundred dollars and I double checked that fact by going to the dot gov ABC board website if that is not a sign from the Lord and I as soon as I saw that three hundred dollars I said oh shit all right this is my brain going deep now into like should I start a bar okay what's the rent here the rent for places like this are like okay then I look for I look for leasing commercial properties to lease and I find a place for like two thousand so i'm like okay if i charged about ten dollars a cocktail two people 20 bucks a table if they're there for an hour she did the math times you know let's say i have 20 tables four hundred dollars times six hours two thousand four hundred dollars boom i got rent in a night right minus minus obviously utilities and overhead and stuff like that but come on it's not bad small intimate spot could be like 700 to a thousand square feet you only need like one bartender one server maybe I'm in full support also I do tapas I've been saying this for years there needs to be a cocktail bar that serves tapas like they do in Spain I went to Spain in college every time you order a drink there's like little tapas that you can get or like sometimes they're like little jars of like nuts or gummies on the table like how cool would that be here it would definitely cool lighting cool vibe I love the juxtaposition of like a really nice aesthetic cocktail bar great lighting great cocktails and then they serve you like quote unquote like trash food like hot dogs or like chips in a bag like chips in a bag like nachos in a bag like you open up the chips and like put a bunch of toppings in there hot dogs yeah like slices oh wildwood does that though and actually don't even try to beat them i'm not gonna do hot dogs they're so good yeah i'm not gonna do it my currently as we speak my wheels are turning for starting a bar so hey wildwood this is your last chance this is your last chance you're gonna have crazy competition for real i i feel so confident in our marketing abilities that i think we could start any business and knock it out of the park I say no marketing don't market at all let the people market yeah word of mouth only exclusivity it would definitely only be open on like Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Friday, Saturday, Sunday or something like that because people do not go out like this on the weekdays but maybe if it got really good it would but that exclusivity kind of like speakeasy vibes but not speakeasy I want a small intimate spot to hang out that is low light and just cool vibes New York vibes yeah and not super crowded. They're just small. Oh, like Sauce in New York. Oh, that place was so sick. Yes. Anyway, that's where I'm at. I quickly forgot about my Wildwood job and I'm down the path of creating my own bar. And then, of course, I asked my closest friends and board of directors what they thought. Board of directors, your mother. My mom is the chairman of the board of directors for sure. And then all my close friends on my Instagram close friends story are also my board of directors. And everyone's telling me Yes. This is a great idea. Oh, no. You guys. This is a great idea. What do our listeners think? If you guys think that Elisa should open a bar here in the Shoals area of Alabama, comment. I think this is a great idea. Who knows? I might lose interest in a week. Who knows? The best ideas come from a place of need, like my buddy Roy. Good deal. Good deal. He started a nonprofit several years ago after a life alternative. altering skiing accident altered his spinal cord he has since committed his life to helping other athletes with spinal cord injuries get back into sports with the high fives foundation we love the high fives foundation over here absolutely incredible they're i would agree they're doing incredible work for a lot of people that really need support and i love that it's all athletic stuff that's their whole thing is athletes getting back into it and they do all kinds of sports i've worked with them several times now and there's nothing but good vibes really really really good people making this non-profit run smoothly and people's lives really are being changed I know a lot of people who have a lot of money who they're always looking for a place for a tax write off at the end of the year and I cannot stress to you enough this is a great place to send your money the High Fives Foundation you can visit them at highfivesfoundation.org you have to spell out fives f-i-v-e-s if you need a high five this summer check them out I need one right now Yeah. That was a good sound bite. What are our other summer plans? We're going to Pride next weekend in Nashville. We got to really perfect our barbecue and our fire pit game over here. We need to tan. I'm so pale. It's been raining, so then we haven't been able to tan, but that's coming soon. More events around the city. I'm hoping there's baseball in our future. I'm trying to get my nephew to go to a baseball camp or something like that this summer. And maybe opening a barn. Maybe opening a barn. But also barefoot. We're trying to be barefoot more. Oh, we're barefoot right now on the porch. I am so out of practice with grounding. I haven't been grounding for centuries now. If you're listening to this, take your shoes off right now. Take your shoes off. Go touch some grass. That's the end of the podcast. No, I'm just kidding. Actually, this really is the end of the podcast. Yeah, thank you so much for listening. Episode four.
