Roy reached out. Roy's the founder of High Fives and he was like, I want to sponsor your whole season. And I was like, bet. And it started raining cash money. I mean, like$5 time eight episodes. I mean, you really can't beat that deal. Oh my God. I'd be stunting out here. He was like, he was like, I'm gonna do more once you hit, I think it was a thousand listeners or something like that. So tell your friends. Okay. I want to talk about high fives because I just did a whole trip with high five foundation. I was in Rhode Island for four or five days. How was that? It was awesome. First of all, I've been to Rhode Island one time on a camping trip. Absolutely loved it. The This is my second time in Rhode Island. I went a day early, and I don't remember why I booked the trip so early. Yeah. But I did. I think it was like a price thing. It was like a better price. But you had solo time before everyone got there, right? Yeah, but that wasn't the reason why. I think it was like a price thing, and I just was trying to save the company, the organization money. But anyway, so yeah. So I got there a day early, and I decided to rent a car and thrift. So that's what I did. Hell yeah. That first day? I drove around thrifting the whole day. However? was it any fines any gems yes wait I want to get to that but I do want to just real quick talk about how the reason I was there with high fives
SPEAKER_00yeah okay
Rhode Island Thrifting
Sydney's New Obsession of Thrifting/Reselling
Trail of Tears Vendor
SPEAKER_01yeah so they have these community and conversations which is basically like these events that they put on a few times a year and it's for all of their the people that are in there like supporting their organization right they're like donors and things like that the last one I went to was in New York we were in Manhattan we were on top of a tall building it was like it was a whole vibe it was super cool cool um this one was in Rhode Island there was one of the um donors her name's Carol um shout out Carol yeah shout out Carol um she had she has this beautiful home like in a cove on Rhode Island and they're those houses are like fancy out there right yeah they're very Taylor Swift is out there yeah they're very like coastal just fishing vibes but like fancy like cottage core meets the beach I don't know how to describe it okay right but anyway she had this yard right on the water and um they you know high fives did a really good job of setting up the event and yeah i just was there to photograph it they had literally they had um lobster for dinner it was fancy it was cool from the source too over there yeah but they put those on to you know thank the sponsors and stuff and also to raise money for the foundation because it's completely like a non-profit so you were taking photos i was taking photos of that yeah right so their whole thing is they help athletes that have injuries get back into sports right so they have dirt bike fish surf snow and the rhode island camp was a fish camp so we went deep sea fishing with these athletes that's awesome super cool yeah you have to do all these cool things this is very cool yeah and um and i was just filming did you catch something yeah oh yeah i did well i wasn't supposed to be fishing i was filming oh yeah but i did go they were like you gotta try and i was like oh my god thank you because it's on my bucket list to go dc fishing so i did i literally i cast my line out and i caught a fish instantly and then i did it again instantly oh and we went shooting we went to a shooting range one day i think that was just like a sidebar yeah i I saw those photos, and they're sick. Oh, those turned out really cool. Good contrast with the light. But anyway, when we went shooting, I was photographing, obviously, again. But someone was like, do you want to shoot? And I was like, sure. So that's like the disc shooting, right? That looks legit. They pull the trigger. Not the trigger. The button. It flies up. The disc does. And then you pull the trigger. You shoot it with like a rifle situation. I don't know what any of the guns are called. But anyway, first time, disc flies. Bam. Shot it. Second disc. Bam. Shot it. And I turned around and looked at everyone. I go, I have a really good adrenaline rush and I'm two for two. So I'm, that's, I'm good. Yeah. And then I went back to shooting with my camera. Were you the only one that did it on the first try or like, were people really getting it? No, I mean, these are athletes. So a lot of them are, they got it. Yeah. I mean, they're in wheelchairs and some people have one leg or whatever, but like, that doesn't mean that totally they're not athletic. They're very athletic. Okay. Cool. Um, so yeah, there was this one guy and I think he was like freaking, he, he shot every single disc. He was so good. Yeah. He's like a fisherman guide out in Montana. Okay. Which, by the way, he invited us. Oh, heck yeah, we're going. Let's go. I want to go. I've never been to Montana. I know, me either. So anyway, okay. High fives. That sounds cool. High fives. They're awesome. Every single thing they do is epic. Okay, let's get back to you being there. And so you were doing your job. And then before your whole job, you had the thrift experience because you're deep into the reselling situation, reselling business. What was it like thrifting over there? Yes. So, okay. Long story short, it was really bad. Were you too rich over there, maybe? No, I drove around for a full day around Rhode Island, and I just really didn't find hardly anything. Nothing. I think I bought like three things that first day, but I did happen upon a Goodwill outlet store that I walked in. There was no one in there. All of the bins were completely piled with clothes. There's not a single soul in sight. I have a whole video on this online. it went viral actually because I'm like wait why is there no one here there was no cashiers there nothing but turns out that it was their grand opening the next day and they were just prepping for it and I happened to walk in when this guy walked out and he didn't think anything of it he thought I belonged I thought I belonged and I got in with that unscathed but then I turn around and look at the door and he's walking back and he goes um can I help you I go are you open he's like no I was like oh my bad he's like tomorrow I was like oh bet so the next morning you know it was actually funny it was between going out with the high fives like crew because they were going like wave wakeboarding is that what you call it yeah wakeboarding or thrifting and i was like listen i have to thrift i have to like committed they're probably like you're so freaking weird you're gonna go to a goodwill bin store but i was like i have to do this um and i'm glad i did because i found some really nice stuff and i've almost went to the bins on the opening day the next morning yes nice is there a lot of people yes there's a line to get in that's crazy like that whole sub culture of resellers and thrifting is so real people stand in line people want to do exactly what you're doing like and they don't even know that you're you know visiting no this has become my new obsession I think I feel like that day that moment was like the catalyst like the beginning of me just going all in with this I've been traveling I rented a car I put an investment into this yeah I just feel like I've been so busy with it since then like I've gone all in like I'm literally working I record all of my hours. I'm working like 12 to 14 hours a day. Yeah. I'm obsessed. So did you find good things that you've resold since? Yes. And I, yesterday I had my first$100 day. Hey, that's what we're talking about. Yes. Every time a month, at least keep that up three. Wait, is that the math? Oh yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. 3,000. Yeah. Well, I'm my, my goal by the end of the year is to have$300 days. 9,000. Yep. That'd be sick. Yep. Yeah. were making nine thousand a month from reselling i mean you're kind of in the perfect spot because alabama has a bin store right but that's in huntsville yeah it's like an hour yeah and then the thrift stores here you found your spots right that you go to there's of course the foodland flea market what's your average sales facebook marketplace what's your average when you're going to these things like each time like what i'm spending yeah like how much is it costing you let me instead tell you about my profit margin which is anywhere okay let me direct you to my profit and loss statement over here yeah margin i i my profit margin on average so far is anywhere from 75 to 90 percent so i'm doing really i'm doing really good i mean i'm i'm still in the negative from all the clothes i bought like you see my office my office looks like a store it looks like a store there's five racks of clothes in there they're all filled to the brim i ran out of hangers this morning nice again so if you're saying that you're making like 80 profit what you're you're buying for like five bucks and selling for like 25 uh sometimes yeah or i'm buying for a dollar and selling for 10 it just depends i've got my stuff right now in groundhog coffee shout out groundhog as of today i'm going to be also in downtown sheffield at this place called uncle a's emporium it's a vintage yeah you said that you on the last one that you're meeting with that guy so what's up what's the update on that yeah so the update is we we did a handshake I'm doing some social media help with him for him okay everyone if you see any videos like that be like wow this is the greatest video I've ever seen in my life yeah please I can't wait to go visit that place so then Sydney looks extra badass yeah I would appreciate that actually just all my videos where there's a business involved please like share and comment be like wow this is like like say something I can't wait to visit yeah in the comments be like I might travel all the way to Alabama just so I can go here yeah or be like oh my god how much is that vintage toy car in the background right there at 38 seconds yeah scroll all the way to the end and just pick something in the background and be like oh my god need that or be like is that the influencer Sidney Valiente promoting that store oh my god I love her no don't do that that's really obvious guys but yeah the guy that runs the store he's like I think this is going to be a great partnership I think is what he said and I was like yeah so I'm in the I'm in the corner of the store you walk in you go left you go left again and and then you're back in the front for all you visitors where the windows are and um I'm right there that's where my clothes are gonna be I don't have anything in there yet I gotta do that literally right after this podcast right right we're busy girls we are busy girls and and I'm sorry this is all about me so far yeah it's fine this is the update we're on the porch just talking about our life and um so you know about the trail of tears no yes yes the the you know motorcycle thing right right so actually let me bring up the definition of the Trail of Tears the Trail of Tears was the forced removal of Native American tribes from their homelands in the 1830s thousands of Cherokee Creek Seminole Chickasaw Chickasaw and Choctaw people were marched west and many died from disease starvation and exposure it remains one of the darkest chapters in American history I did know that I learned that kind of recently so yes I think because I'm here now so I was like I need to learn about this so and I I don't know nitty gritty details, but apparently North Alabama was part of this trail where they were forced. Um, and so motorcycle enthusiasts and riders, um, they, every year they honor, Oh my God, I just got emotional. Oh, that was weird. Um, yeah, they, every year they, to commemorate this, why am I so emotional about this? I don't know. It's the weird. Godly.
UNKNOWNUm, Thank you.

SPEAKER_01i'll just give you a minute for a second yeah yeah this is super i'm like beat red she's like where the fuck am i moved by this i mean it's history you know it's moving i get it i mean it's sad they all died and they were kicked out of their home it sounds familiar yeah not gonna go there um but anyway yeah so all these motorcycle riders they get together and they ride across the state north of the state and the area where it starts is in east alabama and davenport alabama And they have like a kickoff event every year. And I just was thinking about the Trail of Tears and how cool it is and stuff. And I decided, let me just go on their website and see if, you know, the event has any kind of vendors like that you can set up or whatever. So I look it up. It says, call this number. I'm like, Oh my God, I gotta call. I can't email. I gotta call someone. Dude. Yes. A lot of things are call. I call this guy named Lynn. Okay. Lynn is, I leave a message. He doesn't answer. He calls me back. What'd you say in the message? I just said, Hey, uh, I see you're the guy to call about being a vendor at the Trail of Tears kickoff event. I'm really interested. I was wondering if you can call me back and let me know like prices and times and things like that. I'm really interested. Just paint a picture here. Yep. I got it. He calls me back. I'm in the car with the windows down. He's on a tractor. A tractor? Yep. Because I'm like, I'm sorry. It's hard to hear you. My window's down. Let me just roll this up. He goes, oh, don't worry about it. I'm on a tractor. I was like, okay, cool. Hell yeah. He tells me all about it. It's a$25 vendor fee. Wow. to set up for the Trail of Tears event. And this is like a huge event. It's a huge event. I think he said there was 16,000 people that come through. Oh my gosh. That number might be wrong. Okay. I don't know. But it's a two day event. The first day, because they wanted to make it like worth the time and the effort it takes for, you know, to set up an event because the Trail of Tears event is kind of short. So it's like half a day is a Trail of Tears event. And there's a concert that night. The vendors are right next to the event. And then we stay the night. We're going to stay in a hotel And then the next morning we set up again or not set up again. We go to our setup and then there's another event. It's like a Jeep event. So I'm going to do two events for$25 total. That sounds like a vibe. Okay. And it's a bunch of probably like just Harley Davidson people. And like, I don't know, like native American enthusiasts, probably a little bit too. Or is it all about bikes and Jeeps and stuff? I'm not quite sure. I think it's mostly about bikes. So you're going to sell your clothes. Yes. You're going to set up how many racks? I mean, maybe all of them. We're in it, bro. We're in it. Yup. So anyway, as you can tell, I've been working around the clock and I've been really, really trying to get this business up and running. For you to do all that while you're even in Rhode Island is like a huge thing. Like you've like, you're like, okay, I'm not only committing to it when I'm here, but also when I'm traveling. Yes. And it got me thinking like, oh, I should do this every time I visit a place. For real. You might get some gems. Yeah. And it was, I mean, I'm segwaying to a different subject, but it was interesting because whenever I was meeting all these new people in Rhode Island and whenever someone would say, oh, where did you come here from? It was really hard for me to say Alabama. Oh, yeah. Because they think that you're from... Well, I guess you are kind of from here. Well, I am from here and I'm not ashamed or anything to be from Alabama. I love Alabama. It's a great place. We're having a good time. But I don't identify with it. I identify with being from California because it's kind of where I grew up as an adult. It's where I put my stake in this world or whatever yeah um so it was weird because whenever someone asked me i'd be like well i just moved to alabama it's getting i'm getting used there's like an explanation you're just like there's not one answer you're like well let me just tell you why i'm actually not from here yeah but i'm doing something here that's temporary and then i'm leaving and like yeah and people are just like bro i just want to know what airport you're from yeah dude i was from san diego but then i moved to alabama a stuff like that. And when I, okay. So I went on a trip recently too. I went back to San Diego, almost didn't come back. Y'all almost, she really didn't. She's like, should I stay? And I was like, do you almost quit my job? And I would have been the ghost of Christmas past. You guys would have never seen me again. Um, but when I was at the airport, I was at the Huntsville airport and I was buying a water bottle for, um, like$12,500 for the water bottle. And, uh, the guy was like, so are you going away or home? And I said, well, I'm like, I'm going to San Diego. I'm like, I'm like from there. he's like so home and I was like oh shit oh yeah you're right uh I was like and I was like well I live here now and I like was like thinking in my head but not in Huntsville but and then and then he's like okay cool yes and so like your original home I was like yeah but I just was like what the fuck kind of interaction was that that was so weird and I didn't like it and I felt what you're what you felt where you're like I'm not I'm not from here like I'm from California like I'm really cool and I know what good food tastes like so Wow. That's where I'm from. I just want you guys to recognize that I'm a city girl. Okay. And I always be a city girl. So I get that. We are definitely city girls. I get that. But anyway, back to me. California was amazing. Going back to San Diego. That was the rejuvenation that I needed. Kind of. I mean, I like didn't want to go back home for real. I thought about quitting my job right then. I literally was like about like I was so close. Wait. can you tell me why like why okay I mean I know why I know why in my heart but like what was it about San Diego like you being there like tell me were there specific moments that you were like oh I don't want to leave or was it just like a vibe or was it because your parents were there it's more of like I didn't I didn't want to come back to here it was more about what was waiting for me on the other side why don't you want to come back to here is it because there's nothing here there's like there's not like restaurants like the job my job is slow not making a lot of money if I was like living in New York and then I went back to San Diego I I'd be like, oh, cute, San Diego, my hometown, nostalgia, family, amazing. Can't wait to get back to Brooklyn. That'd be different. But if I'm here, I'm like, what am I going back to? Other than you and Chevy, that's the best part for sure. But what else? I was thinking. Yeah, exactly. There's nothing here that's like, oh, love this. It's just difficult. I realized when I was there that Alabama is just full of no's. No. There's a lot of no's. there's a lot of can'ts and there's limited opportunity versus San Diego is unlimited opportunity so like the no's is like hey is there a Trader Joe's by you no is there like a run club that you can go to no is there a 24 hour gym no there might be but you know what I mean it's limited opportunity or like what's another thing it's like is there a poke restaurant close to you you can eat poke no there's not there's just no everything's no and I don't like being told no. Yeah. It is hard to go from like unlimited resources. For me, it's a resource thing, right? Unlimited resources to like hardly anything. I took a Uber into OB with Kate and we were like drinking in OB and I'm Ubering and I'm being safe and shit. And you don't, can't do that here. There's four. I looked it up the other day when I was at Rancho and I was at work because I was talking to Hydo's fiance, Hannah about opportunity in California and stuff. And I was like, I was like, there's no Uber drivers here. And I was like, actually, I haven't even pulled up the map to look at how many Uber drivers are in this area. And I was like, let me look. And it only populates the area that you're like going to, like you can't zoom in on a map and it'll show you your drivers. So I put from Florence to our house in Tuscumbia, which is like 10 minutes away across the bridge. There was four drivers available, four. And then I put in, I went to San Diego and I put in from my parents' house to SeaWorld and there was like 25 in that area. And I was like, that's crazy. And people are that means that people are drinking and driving out here and shit so like i don't know there's the resources is crazy i'm surprised that there's four drivers though it's like three more than i thought there were and they were definitely posted up at home oh yeah they were just like have the app on and they were at home they weren't moving i got a ride yeah my first one this let me put my pants on um but yeah i it just is like the land of yes the land of opportunity sure let's do that can we do that yes is there this after that yes like it's just it's just nice yeah and I guess my family's there too so whatever yeah so tell me what'd you do with your parents well we just like kind of kept it low-key hung out at my parents house they have a whole new like front yard situation with like a fire pit and stuff so we hung out by the fire pit and hung out my nephews there well I hung out with Leo with my mom we went to a ovarian cancer walk shout out Tina for that one and then I also hung out with Chris my other nephew he came in from Washington so uh had a drink on the rooftop by the beach with him at sunset it was just magical and then he came over to my parents house and we like sat by the fire and stuff like that so i don't know but my parents kept it low-key hung out family i didn't hang out with a lot of friends when i was there i only hung out with like a few people but it was it was nice i i wanted to extend the trip like three more days i was really jealous of you getting roberto's yeah and i miss a california burrito dude yeah and the california burrito didn't even have guac on it because i forgot but but it was still so so good oh my god didn't you try to get rancho to make you a california burrito one day oh my god this is actually a really funny story okay so okay let me tell you let me tell you the situation i go into rancho for an opening shift so i'm thinking okay i'm gonna ask the kitchen to make me a burrito a breakfast burrito so i ask mind you in spanish to the head cook guy and i basically said like who can i ask for a breakfast burrito and he said you know in spanish he's like get this and i was like okay okay so in my head i'm thinking i want just simple shit because over here in Alabama they make things really greasy and cheesy and stuff so I said papas huevos bacon I forgot to say bacon in Spanish and what else I say in poquito queso like just a little bit of cheese like like real cheese I said queso real not the like sausage queso cheese whatever and he's like okay and then that's what I said just like that like I just said four things for it and I made made sure to say breakfast burrito and then the some guy from the kitchen they start making it some guy from the kitchen he's like oh so you don't want he comes back he clarifies he's like not queso on top and I go no like inside like just a little bit or he's like yeah like you're right I know he's like not queso queso I was like no just the regular shredded cheese queso and then I get then they come back and on this plate is like a flat burrito you know how like they put like enchiladas and stuff on a plate and it's kind of like flat and you're supposed to eat it with like a fork they give me that on the inside is bacon and eggs which is right and then on the side there's french fries and then on top of the burrito there's like a little bit of melted cheese on top but it was just such a like metaphor of like what the fuck dude that is not what I wanted I wanted a breakfast burrito with like like potato cheese bacon eggs inside the burrito and it's a round burrito that you can pick up with your hand and just bite into right it was like the i almost i should have taken a picture and i would have posted that on our porch people instagram for sure and i didn't but it was just such a funny moment i was like damn i'm not in california i'm not in san diego right now that is not a breakfast burrito and i just i'm slightly offended at the fact that they put french fries i'm like okay i'm only half white bro like i put i said fucking papas like put that shit in the burrito what are you talking about why did you give me french fries i need you to order it again just for the photo i will i will take it to the open it up stuff it with the fries i know grab a dollop of like a guacamole or something like plop it in there fold it up like you're supposed to fold a burrito flat yeah and then take a bite and be like see yeah i know it was it was crazy like oh like an actual burrito maybe they don't know i mean everyone's like from here though like like lived here like for like 30 years i mean they're from mexico but still like i don't know you know they're used to this way interesting it is it's so interesting and even when i told the other bartender g about it she She's like, oh, yeah, you ain't going to get that. She already knew before my story was over because I was telling her about it. Anyway, I went to California and got a classic burrito that you hold in with your hands, and it was nice. Very, very delicious. Along with some sushi at a revolving sushi bar. Can't find that in the Shoals. Definitely was a highlight of my trip. Oh, my God. That would pop off here. Some poke, which I ate poke twice because it's so refreshing and yummy and delicious. Oh, you know what? This is a good segue for we may not have a lot of food places here that we really love. But there is one spot that is really, really good. And it's called Fourth Planet Barbecue. Fourth Planet is good. The unfortunate part of Fourth Planet Barbecue is they're only open on Saturdays. I know. Because they're not like super established. But they're doing it right. They are doing it right. Yeah. I don't think they have like a permanent structure. Like they're kind of in the back of like a vintage shop or whatever. But that leads me to a surprise i reached out to fourth planet bar no you did it and i was like hey we have this podcast um we just moved here from california and you know we have five dollar ads every week and we're wondering i was wondering if you wanted to sponsor one of our podcasts and he was like absolutely oh hell yeah so thank you fourth planet barbecue oh my god he didn't say you just were like five dollar ad that's it and he's like i think he said yo you drive a hard bargain but sure No, I think his actual response was, I'll always support a hustler. And I was like, okay, fam. Yeah, right? His name's Luke. Shout out, Luke. Shout out, Fourth Planet Barbecue. Dude, we got Fourth Planet to sponsor. That's fucking huge. That's amazing. And seriously, I've been telling my mom about this place because mom and I have this huge debate now. She's old school barbecue. She's old school barbecue. Because in the Muscle Shoals area, as our listeners know, we're known for the hot mustard slaw in our barbecue. Now, if you walk into the Shoals and get barbecue and you have this expectation of what the barbecue is going to be like, you're going to be disappointed. My mom had it and she was disappointed because we talked about it. Even with my mom, we were like the hot mustard slaw, a plus work. It's like a really, and I, for those who follow me on Instagram a couple months ago, I went to the food land flea market and I got a jar of hot mustard slaw from this lady and it was delicious. That is like, that's, that's, a plus work but unfortunately it's on a basic sandwich with some flattened meat on it and the meat's good it's not it's not gross or anything but it's just basic just picture a sloppy joe like from your childhood yeah like that thin like hamburger bun situation yeah with barbecue but the barbecue is also dry barbecue so it's not super saucy and stuff there's no sauce actually i don't think no there's no sauce then you put the hot mustard salt and that's it between the buns some people put we'll throw pickles on it too yeah um But and I think it's delicious. It's like what I grew up with. However, if you want barbecue and you're expecting like barbecue. Yes. Fourth Planet is where it's at. It's so freaking good. They have this thing called a Texas Twinkie, which is a bacon wrapped jalapeno stuffed with I think it's cheese and brisket. Is there cheese in it? Yeah. So freaking good. Well, it's Texas style barbecue. So the brisket is where it's at. Yeah. Like go there for the brisket. Shout out Fourth planet damn you guys better start like you know like listening to our podcast every time getting you know following us on instagram because we're blowing up like you know what i mean you can say that you've been here from the beginning i told him look at us i told him i was like we've talked about you before i was like you don't really even need to like pay me don't

SPEAKER_01say that i didn't say that but i was thinking that like but i did say we've talked about you before he's like oh send me those i was like i gotta look for him anyway fourth planet barbecue check them out guys delicious still gotta take my mom there let's get back to San Diego please let's let's get back right now let's let's get on an airplane and get back I want to hear more about your culture shock culture shock like yeah you went from here to San Diego you didn't want to leave let's talk like like tell me more about that I mean it started as soon as I like start landed in San Diego I put on my Instagram like hey there's no southern accents which I didn't think I would notice because like who cares like it's just an accent like I'm here all the time and people come to the bar all the time and they all have southern accents it's not a big deal like I don't really notice it here I just I just think whatever but then when I'm not next to people with the southern accent and I literally was in the in the um airport and I had a San Diego Padre hat on and some guy in Atlanta because I had a layover in Atlanta he just and he was drinking some beers for sure it was at night or whatever he was like all right San Diego that's what he said to me in Atlanta and I because I had that thing and I kind of like was like I was like for sure i was like can't wait let's go and but like that vibe like he said it in that southern california tone that he was just like all right san diego like it just was like i was like oh nice and then everyone you know how you wait like to get on the plane and you're like waiting right there like everyone did not have a southern accent because they're all going back going back to san diego or whatever maybe they're traveling from somewhere else but but you like the southern accent i do like the southern you know what i'm just saying that like i didn't notice the chatter around it it feels like so it's like so much probably because of my job that when I'm around people that don't have it I'm like oh oh my god stop dude like you know you know what I think it is okay you know like so for our honeymoon we went to Paris right you're constant I remember being exhausted mentally because you're constantly like you don't know you're doing this but subconsciously you're you're listening to all this you know foreign language right French French French French French French and then if you hear any words in English you're like perk up yeah you perk up you're like whoa understanding understanding so i wonder if it's kind of like that it's like a mental like um relief to be around familiarity it is and it actually is hard for me sometimes as a bartender to hear understand what people are saying in an accent if they have a thick one that's only happened a handful of times it's not a lot but people will mumble things a little bit more and then they'll say beers by like they're like they'll be like let me get ultra i'm like huh
SPEAKER_00and then
SD vs AL, Easy vs Hard
Bartender Pay in the South
Perspective Brain Exercise
Southern Jobs
Loneliness Epidemic
SPEAKER_01they'll be like an ultra i'm like Oh, okay. Michelob Ultra. Got it. Like, you know, but like they kind of like say it that way. So I don't know. We don't move our mouths very much in the South. That was me in San Diego. The first moment I was like, nobody has an accent. This is crazy. And then obviously the weather's perfect. Like it's breezy, easy breezy, beautiful cover girl. It was like so nice. And what else? Like it was just, it was just good. There's like a lot of people. Oh, I, the first day, the first morning I was there, I went to drift obviously. And they, I was driving down Garnett and there was just a bunch of people leaving their workout class and they're like sports bra and spandex and they had coffees in their hand. And it was like a bunch of young people. And I was like, haven't seen this for three months. Like nobody walks around outside. Nobody goes to a workout class. That's for sure. And nobody's like in a populated area where there's like a bunch of young people. Well, people are working out, but I think most people do it. I don't think there's a lot of places with classes. No, like a class. Oh, classes. Yeah. There's a lot. For real. Abby Drew goes to that boxing class. She does. She said it's her and two old ladies. See, that's what I'm talking about. And I'm not throwing shade in that way. I'm just saying that that's just different. Like I'm used to seeing that and then I don't see it. And then I go back and I'm like, oh my God, look at all these young people. And I, it's crazy because I did feel more inspired there, which got me thinking like, wow, that's just crazy. Like the environment that you're in, how it really affects like your mental game. Because I had the thought like, damn, should I like run while I'm here? like should I work out should I go to this gym or should I get a guest pass because I'm seeing these people doing these activities and it makes you feel like you want to be part of that buzz and you want to be part of that community versus here there's nobody walking around there's nobody like getting their steps in there's nobody going to classes partly because of the weather because it's been hot I'm not trying to say anything about like you know their laziness or anything like that I'm not trying to say that but it's just different because you feel you can feel the energy and you're like oh I want to do that like I have to wonder if you're also inspired because like it's not as mentally exhausting being there like just with the accent thing alone like it's kind of it's mentally draining subconsciously in a way totally and you know and the heat is draining the heat's draining the being a homeowner is draining yes like the your job has been draining here in Alabama because you're not making good money at all yeah like you know totally totally and I mean that all the opportunity there of even making money had me thinking about over here like it's like you went to San Diego a couple months ago, and you found that furniture on the side of the... I don't know if we put that in the podcast or not. No, we didn't. You're right. Yeah, so Sydney went to our friend Alexia, Ale, and Laura's house for dinner, and it was at our old apartment complex, and next to the dumpster, there was a bedside table, a coffee table, and a dresser or something like that. And a lamp, a standing lamp. And a lamp. And it was for free, obviously, next to the dumpster. Sydney had my dad's truck, which is our vehicle when we go to San Diego, loaded that shit in the truck. It's funny, Laura goes I was standing in their apartment I was looking out the window and I could see the dumpster and I go is someone getting rid of that is someone moving she goes yeah the neighbors are moving I can't believe it they're moving again whatever and I was like that stuff's good I go I could like sell that and she goes let's go and she helped me load everything into the truck yeah and then I sold it within 48 hours I sold everything you were like everything must go by Sunday or whatever sold it made like 250 bucks yeah but like that's that opportunity that I'm talking about like you can't find that on Facebook marketplace here and also So the economic status here is a little different. People have more money to spend. The minimum wage is$17. Let's not forget, I'm getting paid$2.30 here in Alabama. So it's a little different. It is interesting to see all those things and to realize how mentally exhausted I am here in the South and how things are easier in San Diego. Which is so interesting because I think most people would argue that the South is easier than a city. I know. And actually, haven't you had people come in? and you've had conversations like that at the bar like people saying they don't like cities or whatever there are so many people that come and sit at my bar and they are like California oh my gosh why are you here blah blah blah I tell them I tell them the whole spiel real estate making my way to New York you know blah blah blah and people are like I can never live in New York and I'm like why not and I always ask people like why and then they're like it's just too busy or they'll talk about crime or they talk about expenses and then they they literally say and this is not shade I'm just saying this is different they're like i love it here this is where i'm staying like forever and i'm just like that's amazing i literally say that's amazing you and i are the duality in the world or the duality that the world needs i literally say that to everybody i say the balance in the world is is perfect because there needs to be people in you know different cities and small towns and agriculture and sectors and whatever you know like everyone needs needs to be where they are but but yeah it's it's crazy it's just like where you put your priorities right so So maybe some people's priorities are I want to own a big house and I want to own three acres or whatever and have my dog roam around and my kids jump on the trampoline. Right. You know, that kind of thing. But we're like, I don't want to mow three acres and I don't want a house that I have to repair. I mean, my mom even is like, your house is so nice. Like, it's so good. And she's like, but maybe it's different for me because, you know, I'm retired and it sounds nice to be slow down and sounds nice to have, you know, this camaraderie around a small town vibe and everyone knows each other like she she likes it you know and i was like mom that is not me i'm at the very beginning of my life like i'm i need more people places things experiences i was like i'm i'm ready to go there are some nice things about having the yard and having that like obviously we'll miss it i see yeah we're gonna miss it yesterday i was uh i was bleaching some clothes that were kind of like tarnished a little yellow and i was just i threw them on the driveway i was spraying them off you know and i was like this is nice totally and i was so sawing things in the garage yesterday for the bathroom which i don't want to talk about right um and i was like i can use a saw in a garage yeah oh but i actually do want to say one thing about the bathroom um one of our listeners asked me if we were still showering outside and i just want everyone to know we are not still showering outside we've okay we've graduated from that we are using the shower we are not using it to its fullest potential but we are showering inside yes okay enough about that yeah let's go back to the culture shock yeah yeah well I mean everything has pros and cons everything has pros and cons so you can't really like compare compare but it was a good it was a good trip but I am glad to be home and I did walk back into our house after the trip and think oh our cute little house our cute little yard oh our kitchen like just you know doing stuff and you're like wow I like my I like this little house you know even though when I was in San Diego I was like does anyone want to buy my house yeah I was like I was like if anyone wants to switch you know You guys can have my house and I'll stay in San Diego, you know? No, we have a plan. We're sticking to the plan. It is hard. I mean, going back to life here, Rancho, man, I'm not making enough money over here in Alabama. Elisa has come home after a... Are your shifts five hours? No, five to 9.30, so four and a half hours. Okay, Elisa's come home after an almost five-hour shift with$36 in her pocket. Yeah. What's that math? What is that, like less than$10 an hour or for sure. That's like$8,$7 an hour. Yeah. Yep. That's not good. Not good. Not good. So that's why when I was in San Diego, I was like, should I just like quit my job and like extend my trip another week and like see more people and do more things and whatever. But you're not, you're going to give it a good college try. I am. I am. I am. One of the, I think, you know, we are not hating on Alabama at all. We're just talking about our experiences here, obviously. Um, and there's a lot of learning to to be had like we're learning a lot of things and everything that we've like the way we've been living our lives so far has been flipped flipped on its head right so it'd be like one of these country boys moving to New York like it's literally the opposite yeah so I just want to go ahead and say that this is not Alabama slander we don't do that but this is our experience here and it is tough right now at least is not making good money at her bartending job I'm starting a new business I'm still in the negative like you know we are we're working we are working hard to to build a new, a brand new life from scratch. And I mean, I think, I think we're cool. I think that's pretty cool of us. Yeah. This is really on brand for us, you know, to love starting over, start over, just try it out, but it's going to, it's not going to all pay off. It's going to all work out in the end because we will be in New York in a couple of years and we will have some real estate at the minimum, just this house, which we'll appreciate in value, but probably more other real estate investments. I'm going to have some bartending skills. you're going to have a$300 a day reselling business. Boom. We can look back and be like, Hey, we did that for a reason. You know what I like to think of when I'm like really, when I'm looking at the bills and I'm like, God, like we're, cause we're, we're pretty drowning right now. We're not doing wonderful on the financial side of things. I like to think about how in the future and not too long in the future, because we, we will be successful. We are, we're successful girls. Like there's no, we're going to figure everything out. That's what we do. We can build things from scratch. scratch you know what I mean yeah but I like to think about in the future how I'll look back at this time and be like man you remember when our bank account was zero yeah totally you remember when the HVAC guy came and said that we needed a new HVAC system right after we moved into our house and it was going to be$13,000 minimum right you remember when the grass was super tall and we just didn't have time to mow it because we were building businesses from scratch we're learning that was fun yeah we're learning we got some ideas and some plans and it'll we'll be able to laugh at this one day I'm already laughing I literally I literally laugh all the time I'll just something will happen I'll just be like lol bro like what in the hell when you're bartending and you're talking to people at Rancho at the bar yeah um have you noticed like a struggle with other people here or like what what's the demographic of people they're okay they're drinking they're probably revealing secrets um yeah oh have you asked anyone their darkest secret oh no No, I forgot. I will. I know. I will. I will. I got one job. I got it. I know. Um, I mean people come in and they, they throw down in all types of ways. Like some people just get like one thing and that's it. Our prices are pretty cheap there. So they just get one thing there in and out. Some people bring all their friends and they got big parties and they're like throwing down and one person's like, I got everybody. And it's like, okay, what are, what are their jobs? What are people doing for a living? You know, I don't know. I ask everyone what they do for a living. I, everyone asks me what I'm doing there. So I talk about me all the time. Nice. That's funny. And I tell people that I'm interested in real estate and they try and tell me about properties that they've, they own or a lot of people are retired. Actually, if I had to pick something about the most people coming in that I've talked to, they're retired. Have you noticed that most people are like college age or retired? Yes. There's not much in between. What's everyone in between? What are y'all doing? If you were like, I think they got corporate jobs. What are you doing? This girl has told me that she had like a corporate job. And so she like has her nine to five and she works like three, four days a week. Other people... Oh, one of my regulars works at the post office. That's a great job. Yeah. Oh, and then another one of my regulars, one of them, he owns a chiropractic office and the other one owns a hair studio. A lot of people own property here and I feel like they have real estate investments and commercial real estate. So it's kind of different things. Okay. Has anyone revealed anything secretive to you or like... you know, have you seen anyone come in with one girl and the next day they come in with another girl? That's the type of scandal that I'm looking for, but no, not really. No. Well, now they're going to know not to tell you because we have a podcast. We're going to talk about it. I know, but no, people are nice. People talk to me a lot. I feel like honestly, people like to just talk. It's crazy. The big tippers have been the ones that you've talked to the most, right? Like you've remembered that you remember like something about them and they're like, Oh my God, you remembered. Yeah, bro. Because they're, Oh, I remember them. Cause well, okay no I remember them now because as they come in because they tip good so I'm like hey but also I'm throwing basic customers I think I said this in the last podcast like I'm just barely doing customer service to them I'm just like like the girl that works at the post office like she's not a big tipper necessarily but she's a regular so I'm like hey how was work today like I'm just remembering some stuff about people which is crazy because I don't know people just maybe don't get talked to a lot or they don't have a lot of these experiences where they go out and talk to bartenders I don't know what's going on but I feel like people really like to be talked to I think what it is is that we're so like as a culture as a society right now we're so massively online like we're more online than in the real world it feels like so when you have a real world interaction someone remembers you they're not talking about themselves that's probably like a standout thing yeah you know yeah people need it people need to like get out there and talk to people I feel like people come to my bar just to like sit in front of me and talk and I have to be like sometimes I feel bad because I'm like really busy and I have to be like bro I'm I'm not, I don't say this to them, but I'm thinking like, I'm at work, bro. I'm sorry. I can't talk to you. Like I'm making a bunch of drinks for everybody else. And I feel kind of bad. Cause I can tell that they want to talk to me. I can tell that they're like waiting for me to like go over there to their side of the bar. And then they like say something like, yeah. But have you noticed that with like people you've talked to? Yeah. Well, I've noticed when I'm doing like a Facebook marketplace meetup specifically, or I'm going to an estate seller or whatever, people really want to talk to me about actually the main thing that people talk to me about is the reason that they have you know men's clothes and they're a woman or whatever it's because their husband passed or I'm at an estate sale obviously someone passed if you're at an estate sale they want to tell me about oh yeah she was a dancer and she has a bunch of dresses downstairs for her ballroom like stuff like that I'm getting a lot of like talk of those who have passed but an interesting element of reselling I didn't think about it but actually I like talking to someone about just Just because I've experienced that with you. Yeah. And like when Tina and Anthony passed, I noticed a lot of people do not talk to you about it. And I noticed a lot of people when, if it's ever brought up, they don't want to say their name or anything like that. Like no one's asking you questions. And I think that that's kind of messed up. I think that you should talk about those who have passed. Like if someone's like, oh, I lost my daughter or my friend or whatever, the least you could do is say, what was their name?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know what I mean? So when people are bringing that up, I say, the first thing I say is, what was their name? Well, first thing I say is I'm sorry for your loss. Yeah. And then I say, what was their name? And then that opens up a little door for them to talk about them if they want to. And if they don't, then they don't. But most people do.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
We Got Merch!
SPEAKER_01You know, and I don't know. And the last lady bought a bunch of stuff from her. When I did the math, everything was like 70 cents each because she gave me like a big deal or a good deal on all her husband stuff. That's awesome. Yeah. She went on and on about her husband. She told me their love story. It was really, really sweet. We talked for 45 minutes. That's sweet. I drove an hour outside of town and talked to they were 45 minutes she needed that because I'll talk to I've only talked to people I think I've done that one time because it's still kind of new for me and I'm like in the middle of spewing like a bunch of information about my sister and all this stuff and then I'm like thinking like oh my god I'm just like unloading on this person about like I wonder if like they're feeling weird like what do I say or how do I respond or something but I can't stop talking about it so I'm like whatever dude you're just gonna hear about me and my sister like who cares you know but I just like you just can't help it you just like want it it just is in your body and you just like need to talk to people about it and it just comes out you're like i need to talk so i get her where she's talking for 45 minutes and she's just like like i'm glad to be a listening vessel and actually she she messaged me on facebook marketplace after that and she's like you're such a sweet soul thank you for listening to me i'm sorry went on and on i was like oh it was my honor to hear your love story yeah cute not you getting emotional again oh geez oh you have but it's it's just sweet and you know she she said multiple times that she was lonely and I think that's part of the reason that I stayed and I talked to her for so long oh my god I'm actually emotional like I care you know yeah for sure I do think people are lonely I think it's not a southern thing it's like oh it's probably a global it's definitely an American experience yeah you're lonely it's getting right not we I got you yeah live without you I'd be lonely yeah totally I mean it's there's moments of loneliness for sure that I felt just not even with my siblings is lonely being in this I'm away from everything I've ever known and people that can support me in certain ways and yeah I know I asked for this and it's fine and I like being uncomfortable but sometimes it gets lonely and it's lonely being in a small town because even if I was in Nashville I don't think I would feel as lonely because you could be around a bunch of people at any moment yes but here I cannot even on a Sunday yeah exactly but here I cannot yeah I think that's why not why but one of the reasons probably why a lot of people join churches. It's a built-in community. Should we join one? No. Absolutely not. I'm not going to church. That was hilarious. Cindy's face got like full trauma right there. She was like, what the fuck? No, definitely not. Like I can be religious. I ain't going to be it again. Yeah. Well, I don't like organized religion personally because, um, my religion is nature. Okay. Do you hear the crickets?
