The Last Letter - Rebecca Yarrows

Last week we talked about what it looks like when you hit survival mode.
This week is one simple step to get yourself out of it.

What’s the thing you keep putting off?

The appointment you haven’t made.
 The email you haven’t sent.
The task that keeps popping into your head… over and over again.

It feels small.
It feels like a minor inconvenience.
So you keep pushing it to “later.”

But here’s the problem… it doesn’t go away.

It follows you.
It sits in the back of your mind.
It turns into mental clutter that you carry into your work, your leadership, and your time at home.

In this episode, I’m sharing a personal story about finally making an appointment I had avoided for over a year… and what changed the moment I stopped guessing and just got the answer.

Because whether it’s your health, your work, or something simple on your to-do list…

It’s better to know.
And it’s even better to be done.

Hey friend, this is your weekly leadership tip from Desiree. One small idea to carry with you into your life and leadership this week. And the tip this week is to make the appointment. In last week's leadership tips episode, I talked to you about kind of having a rough week, a full on survival mode, tough week. And one of the things that I mentioned in there was that I will probably have to have hip surgery. So in case anyone cares, in case you don't want to be left hanging, I thought I would kind of...

Mix this in with my tips episode for this week. So long story short, I've been dealing with massive hip pain, achiness, sharp shooting pain all the way up my hip, around the back, down my leg, etc. for what I thought was eight months until I looked back with my chiropractor and my massage therapist. They're like, no, it's definitely been more like a year. And I've just been dealing with it to the point where when I told my sisters that I was going to have to have hip surgery, they're like,

you have hip issues. just, I didn't feel the need to talk about it. There was nothing that was going to be done. I was going to work out anyway. I was going to keep doing all the same things regardless. I figured it would go away eventually. And one day I was reading a fiction book. It's called The Last Letter by Rebecca Yaros. Great book. Emotionally wrecked me. If you like a good tearjerker like a Nicholas Sparks, definitely go and read this book. But I

was reading within the first couple of chapters, there was this little girl, six years old, so same age as my daughter, and she had a bunch of hip pain. The doctors couldn't figure it out, couldn't figure it out, doing all the tests, and eventually it comes back that she has a form of cancer. And regardless of the rest of the story, I just thought in that moment, if there's ever been a here's your sign, if you've ever watched the blue collar comedy tour, Bill Ingalls,

Here's your sign. That's what popped into my head in that moment. I'm like, okay, I'm going to just take this at face value. I'm going to call the doctor and I'm going to get an MRI. Turns out I have a little bone chip off of my right hip that has been slowly tearing a tear in the labrum. In other words, the muscle around my hip joint, which has been causing a lot of pain and achiness and lack of mobility and all the good things.

met with the surgeon today, he pretty much said like, you're not going to, nothing's going to go worse than it already is. It's kind of like an eyelash in your eye. You know, once you take it out, it's going to be significantly more comfortable, but ultimately like it's not going to blind you. And that's essentially what's happening with my hip. It's really painful and uncomfortable and annoying, but it's not going to cause arthritis or you know, I'm not going to not be able to walk.

You don't really need to know any of that other than the fact that the tip this week is go and make the appointment. I don't care if you've had a tooth that's maybe kind of been bothering you a little bit, but you've just been dealing with it. Maybe it's a health concern that, you know, gets pushed to the bottom of your list all the time. Maybe it's to go and get your new ID. Maybe you need your real ID and you just haven't gotten to the DMV yet. Whatever that thing is that you've been putting off.

You probably have really good excuses for it, but I'm here to tell you that it's just better to know. I kind of went into my my x-ray appointment thinking like it's all in my head. Nothing's really wrong. It's fine. They're going to just tell me that I'm totally losing my mind and send me on my way. And so when they came back and they're like, no, you actually have an issue. I was part happy because turns out I'm not crazy, but also kind of like, now it's inconvenient and I have to do something about it and

I've never gotten put under before, so there's some fear there, there's frustration. Again, inconvenience is the word that keeps popping into my head. But I just keep thinking to myself, I'm glad that I made the appointment. I'm glad I no longer have to question the severity of this. I no longer have to put it off and have it be a constant weight and pressure on my shoulders. It's no longer on my list, it's just getting done.

And he said, the moment that you have the surgery, it'll be like you took the eyelash out of your eye and the discomfort will be gone. So my tip for you this week is I don't care what the appointment is, make the appointment. Stop putting yourself last. Stop assuming that it doesn't matter. If it's medical, seriously, go right now. Send me a message when you're done. I will hold you accountable. And second off, if it's something that is just feeling like a minor inconvenience, I want you to think for just a moment.

Desiree (04:45.314)
How many times has that minor inconvenience, we'll use the driver's license, pop into your head? How long has that enrollment email from your kids' school been sitting in your inbox? How long has that Amazon return been sitting on your desk? Make the appointment. It's a metaphor for all of the little things that you keep pushing off because it feels easier. But imagine the mental weight that will be lifted off when you finally do the thing.

All right, that was some tough love for me, but I am excited for you. Whatever the thing happens to be, I know you'll feel better when you're done. And I can't wait to see you back here next week for another tip on life and leadership. Now go make the appointment.
