Hello fellow Sojourners. I’m your host Dave Laton and welcome to Travel With A Purpose, a podcast designed to keep Sojourners and friends informed, entertained, and inspired.
We’re known as Sojourners. Our tag line is Travel With a Purpose. In this episode we will spend a few minutes looking at those two together.
I like to think about what we do as not just traveling through retirement. I like to think we’re traveling on assignment. Because that is what we’re doing. And not just because we signed up for a sojourn, but because that’s what we’re called to do by our Lord. He came, taught, served, and brought good news. As His followers, and as Sojourners, that is exactly what we do.
That word sojourner means temporary resident. Passing through. Not fully settled.
That sounds a lot like the Sojourner RV life, doesn’t it?
We sign up, hook up, park, enjoy the time, and eventually move on (oh and by the way, as team leaders, don’t forget to report). We also know that no matter the service we perform on the Sojourn, it is evangelical at its foundation. We carry the gospel, live the gospel, and share the gospel wherever we serve. Again, it’s more than a trip…it’s an assignment.
We travel with a purpose. And sometimes we might think of a sojourn as a purpose. For example, we’re at such and such location to do such and such activity. But really, scripture shows us something different. Abraham met God while traveling. Moses heard from God in the wilderness. The disciples followed Jesus on the road. The early disciples carried the gospel with them when they were dispersed. Whatever the movement, it did not distract from the purpose. It revealed it. The purpose was more than the event or location, it was an act of faithful obedience.
Here’s something to think about as we journey.
Am I looking for who God will bring into my path today? That’s how the gospel is spread. The Holy Spirit brings the seeker and the teacher together. Ask Paul and Annanias. As Cornelius. Ask the Ethiopian official.
Am I noticing God in the ordinary. We love the views we experience. The sunsets. The sky above the trees. The simple yet beautiful and remarkable elements of God’s creation. Or, the smile and a friendly greeting. The offer for assistance. And on and on. God surrounds us with the ordinary more than the grand and glorious. We turn the ordinary into grand and glorious.
And, what small act of kindness can I do to reflect Christ. It doesn’t have to be anything grand and glorious. Our smile, our attitude, our love all reflect the light of our Saviour’s love.
Something I’ve noticed, opportunity to plant seed rarely announces itself loudly unless we spiritually hard of hearing. Usually, it is a soft whisper of a seeker reaching out…sometimes when they don’t even realize it.
That’s at the heart of our purpose as we travel. To reflect and share the love of a Saviour wherever we are and whatever we are doing.
This week don’t just travel. Travel with a purpose. Travel with awareness and compassion.
