Microwave Thoughts

Episode 1: Do Pigeons Know There in a City?

Microwave Thoughts Season 1 Episode 1

So here’s today’s question—one that hit me while I was watching a pigeon strut across a parking lot like it was late for a business meeting:

Do pigeons know they’re in a city?

Like...do they have any idea what all this concrete and chaos actually is? Or is this just ‘the world’ to them? Let’s dive in.

Picture a pigeon. Not a majestic hawk or an exotic parrot—no. A humble, slightly scruffy, low‑key confident pigeon.

You’ll find them on sidewalks, bus stops, window ledges... sometimes just chilling on top of an air conditioner unit like they pay rent there.

But have you ever wondered—do they *understand* the city? Or are they just born into this madness and make it work?

Okay, let’s sprinkle in a little science here.

Pigeons—aka rock doves—originally nested on cliffs. Tall, rocky places. Cities are, in a way, like artificial cliffs. Tall buildings? Check. Ledges? Check. Chaos? Double check.

So in that sense, they’re kind of adapted to urban life. But do they know it’s unnatural? Probably not.

Their instincts just say: “Ooh, ledge. Good. Nest here. Eat fries off sidewalk. Excellent.”

But there’s evidence that pigeons can recognize themselves in mirrors, learn patterns, and even distinguish between different paintings. Which… I’ll be honest, is more than some humans I know.

So, let’s flip it.

Imagine we’re the pigeons. You’re born in a massive metropolis. You never leave. You walk on sidewalks, see cars, buildings, and people every day.

You wouldn’t question it, right? This would just be normal.

So maybe pigeons don’t think “Wow, these humans built a strange, concrete world!” They’re probably just thinking: “This is where the food falls from the sky sometimes. Good place. Warm vents. I like.”

 Kind of beautiful, actually.

Here’s where my brain really microwaved itself:

If pigeons don’t question the world they’re born into… how much do we take for granted?

We think we’ve figured out the world because we’ve named things: “Oh, that’s a building. That’s a car. That’s capitalism.”

But what if we’re just pigeons on a fancier ledge?

Maybe there’s something way bigger we’re not seeing.

Or maybe we’re just here to enjoy the occasional fry, stretch our wings, and strut through life with pigeon‑level confidence.

So here’s my challenge to you:

Next time you see a pigeon, don’t shoo it away. Respect it. That bird might know something you don’t.

And also—what’s your microwave thought? Ever caught yourself spiraling about something weird and wonderful? I want to hear it.

That’s todays thoughts microwaved and served!
