Help in the Mud

It’s not always rebellion that gets us stuck. Sometimes, it’s discouragement. Depression. Despair. We didn’t leap into the pit—we slid quietly, slowly, until we found ourselves knee-deep in the mud, wondering if anyone sees us. Good news: Someone does.

Chapter Reading: Psalm 40 |  Verse of the Day: Psalm 40:1–3

It’s not always rebellion that gets us stuck. Sometimes, it’s discouragement. Depression. Despair. We didn’t jump into the pit—we just slid into it. Slowly. Quietly. And now we’re knee-deep in the mud, wondering if anyone sees us.

Good news: Someone does

This is Wisdom and Wit, and I am your bible teacher, Chris Reighley.

Today's scripture comes from the book of Psalm chapter 40 verse 1 and 2, and it says: 

“I waited patiently for Yahweh;

And He inclined to me and heard my cry.

He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay,

And He set my feet upon a rock making my steps firm.” — Psalm 40:1–2

Christian fell into the Slough of Despond early in his journey. The more he struggled, the deeper he sank. Shame, fear, doubt—like quicksand for the soul. But help arrived in the form of a man named Help (Bunyan wasn’t subtle), who pulled him out and set him back on the path.

Some of us are in that mud today. And if we’re honest, it’s not the mud that scares us—it’s the silence. We wonder if God still hears us. Or worse, if we’re too messed up to be rescued again.

But Psalm 40 doesn’t open with a shout of triumph. It opens with waiting. With a cry. And with a God who leans down to hear you in the pit.

He’s not just waiting for you at the top. He climbs into the mud to lift you out….

Let me ask you a question:

• What does your “pit” look like today—emotional, spiritual, mental?
• Pray this phrase aloud: “Lord, lift me from the mud—set my feet on solid ground again.”
• Who could you be “Help” to today?
