7th September 1969: The Slipstream That Sealed Stewart’s Supremacy
On this day in 1969, Jackie Stewart clinched his first World Championship at Monza in one of Formula One’s most thrilling slipstream battles. In The Slipstream That Sealed Stewart’s Supremacy, we revisit that breathtaking four-way sprint to the line and the race that confirmed Matra as the first and only French constructor to take the crown.
We also look back to 1958, when Tony Brooks’s victory for Vanwall at Monza secured the inaugural Constructors’ Championship and kept the drivers’ title fight alive. From there we jump to 1997, where David Coulthard and McLaren stole the spotlight at Ferrari’s home race as both title contenders faltered. And finally, we head to Spa in 2008, where Lewis Hamilton’s brilliant wet-weather duel with Kimi Räikkönen ended in one of the most debated penalties in modern F1 history.
From championships sealed to controversies sparked, the 7th of September has delivered some of the most defining moments in Formula One history.
