8th September 1963: The Monza Races That Marked a Century
Monza has always been a stage for milestones, and in this very special 100th episode of Chequered Past, we celebrate three centuries that shaped Formula One.
We begin in 1963, when Ferrari reached its 100th World Championship race, only for Jim Clark and Lotus to dominate and secure both his first Drivers’ title and the Constructors’ crown. Then we move to 1968, where the Italian Grand Prix marked Graham Hill’s 100th Grand Prix start — a milestone day, even if his BRM failed to go the distance.
From there, we celebrate the birthday of Stefan Johansson, a driver remembered for his resilience, near-misses, and later success at Le Mans. We fast-forward to the drama of the 1996 Italian Grand Prix, where Damon Hill’s retirement kept the title fight alive and Michael Schumacher sent the Tifosi wild with a Ferrari victory, and to 2019, where Charles Leclerc held off Mercedes to give Ferrari its first home win in nearly a decade.
