11th September 1988: The Ferrari Farewell That Ended McLaren’s Supremacy
On 11 September 1988, Ferrari delivered one of the most emotional victories in Formula One history. Just weeks after the death of Enzo Ferrari, Gerhard Berger and Michele Alboreto scored a fairytale 1–2 at Monza, ending McLaren’s season-long dominance in front of the roaring tifosi. Ayrton Senna’s late collision with stand-in Jean-Louis Schlesser handed Ferrari their only win of the year — a result still remembered as destiny fulfilled.
In this episode of Chequered Past, we relive that unforgettable afternoon and also look back at Antonio Pizzonia’s career on his birthday, Mario Andretti’s commanding win at Monza in 1977, Nelson Piquet’s championship-shaping triumph in 1983, and Damon Hill’s crucial victory in 1994.
From farewells to breakthroughs, this date has always brought Monza alive with drama.
