A one-hit wonder sounds simple until you try to define it properly. We set ourselves a brutal challenge: build a 32-song World Cup of 1990s one-hit wonders using strict UK Top 40 rules, then argue it all the way to a single champion. With Marc Webster joining us, we go from instant group-stage favourites to the kind of debates that only a proper nostalgia podcast can justify: what counts as “one hit”, whether TV themes should be allowed, and why some songs feel massive even when the chart history says otherwise.....

Welcome Back And The Big Idea

SPEAKER_01

Hello marketers who remembers the UK Nostalgia Podcast, and in this week's episode, we are having a nine days of Warnick Wonders World Cup.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, the World Cup's finished. We've we've not finished with the format. And I'm delighted to say more podcast. I don't know, would you say podcast legend? I certainly would, but I don't know if if everybody, if all the public would, but yeah, we've got Mark Webster joining us, so thanks for uh thanks for being here. You were a driving factor in our numbers early doors, I think. I think you you kind of had the biggest hit when you joined us last time. Did I?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, we were in a pub after him. We were celebrating that you got more than your uh Tuf to Club counterpart deadbart.

SPEAKER_00

Uh I mean I I I I just assumed that he got literally the lowest of all you've listened. I I didn't really take that as a victory, to be honest.

SPEAKER_01

Well, to be honest, we are gonna get him on for an 80s uh World Cup because we were gonna plan this at the World Cup. This we had at the World Cup, and then it were too hot. Um my voice had gone. We then this is the only time we've got to rearrange, but it's something we've wanted to do for ages, one it wonders. And we've done it the same as we always do. 32 teams, none of this uh what is it? Oh, is it 32? Yeah, it's 32 teams, none of this. What did they have now? 48 World Cup nonsense with 48.

SPEAKER_02

This is pre-woke World Cup, isn't it?

SPEAKER_01

Well pre-Woke World Cup, two go through, top two of every group. There's gonna be a lot of people shouting, I think, saying, Why have you not had that? Why have you not had that? I I did a massive amount of research for this when I were on holiday, and I were getting proper angry when I I would like putting bands in and songs and saying, like, oh yeah, I bet they've had a like and then I saw that they'd had another another hit. I don't like sticking rods up at my laptops or getting that angry with them for having another hit so we couldn't include them.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so as far as we know, and I'm sure uh it it could be a first in this episode, we might have made a mistake somewhere. Um maybe one of these artists who had another hit in the in the nineties, but as far as we know, these are all one-hit wonders. Is it a one-hit wonder of all time, or is it as long as they had a one-hit in the nineties?

SPEAKER_01

No, it's one-it wonder of all time. I've been proper harsh today, so it's like proper, proper nineties one hit wonders. Um yeah, let's get going.

Rules For A True One-Hit Wonder

SPEAKER_01

We'll go to you first.

SPEAKER_02

I asked you before the recording, uh Andrew, but have you got a winner, Mark, in mind?

SPEAKER_00

I have not actually. Um that's interesting. Yeah, okay. I've not thought about it in that detail enough. I've got some that I know I like, but I'm pretty sure I'll not make it, and certainly aren't the big songs, if you know what I mean. So yeah, we'll see what we'll just get the vote plays out.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, we'll get a vote each. We'll well pick two to go through from each group and then we'll we'll battle it out in the uh in the in the knockout stages. So yeah, I'll hand over to you then for group A. Mark. These are all at random, by the way. No seeding, no rankings, straight out of the heart. Uh you've not even done them sort of chronological, have you? What's defined the order? It's just me putting them into uh co-pilot.

SPEAKER_02

Whatever order you've written them in.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, no, no, I've just put them into co-pilot. Said I put all 32 in and said, can you put these into groups? Okay. And uh and that's what it did. So yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I wonder what its factors were. But um Yeah, no, yeah. We should ask it while we're doing this. You've handed over to me for group A. Now, I don't know what you're what you're expecting here. Are you expecting like a traveling blade style 13-minute model? Absolutely not. No, I know, no. No, you can just sing sing each song in full. If you can use any instruments, that'd be great. Well, I was gonna mention that as well because some people might not know what these songs are. So I might have to do a little bit of a j yeah, a bit maybe a little bit of a jingle from each one.

SPEAKER_01

No, you're just doing the reading out, you're doing like the infantino sort of an increasing.

SPEAKER_02

Feel free to sing a little bit though if you want to. Oh, yeah, I expect there will be some of that during this podcast.

SPEAKER_00

Oh yeah. Right, so I'm not gonna I'm not gonna sing from the off because I don't want to um I don't want to steal any thunder. But uh so group A. Uh, we've got Dupe by Dupe, which got to number one in 1994. Got Informer by Snow, which got to number two in 1992. We've got the She go. I said I weren't gonna sing. Yeah, you can't you can't resist. You can't resist. You can't resist. Yeah, it's it's it's the title, isn't it? By uh by the Lars, uh which has always annoyed me that it's got an apostrophe in, by the way, Lars, because it probably shouldn't have shouldn't have one.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, never really know. Yeah, I never really thought about that. Yeah, a lot of people will be saying, Shout they've had more than they haven't, they've not had another top 40 hit, unfortunately. The Lars.

SPEAKER_00

And and to be fair, you we've not even uh explained that, have we, that what a one-it wonder is in this context. But I'll finish this and then maybe we can then but that number 13 in 1990, and then the the fourth in the group is the impression that I get by the mighty, mighty boss stones, which got to number 12 in 1997.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, so as we said, like this is uh it's it's got to be have another top if they've had another top 40 hit, they cannot be included in this, and none of these have had another top 40 hit.

SPEAKER_00

So it's just one UK top 40 hit.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Anything standing out here, I think there's a there's an obvious number one here, and I think it's the one that you sang, Mark. I would agree.

SPEAKER_00

Sang is a bit of a strong way to describe it. Um, but yeah, I I mean this this is becoming an easy group to mention, then in it, but it's yeah, I I think so as well, because dupe were just rubbish, weren't it?

SPEAKER_02

Dupe was a bit of a I mean, a lot I suppose by nature one-hit wonders are often novelty songs, but yeah, dupe. I kind of just captured a moment, it's not very good, really.

SPEAKER_01

I don't think no, I don't think it is. I think the number two should probably be in forma, to be honest. That'd be my number two for this. I don't know if you two agree.

SPEAKER_00

Um do you want to give us a rendition? Do you even know what comes between in forma and well, I actually even obviously that fast bit I've no idea what it is. And but but I used to think when I was back at a Nipper back in '92, um, I I used to think it was a lick ya boom boom down.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It does say lick ya, but it's lick ya boom boom down. I'm doing the accent. Yeah, lick ya boom boom down. And uh it translates and knock somebody down. This is the best-selling reggae um, but it's classed as reggae because it well, on my now, that's what I call reggae album. The the the best-selling reggae uh single by a white Canadian artist. I don't know how much the competition it's me. Like I've got a little I've got a few facts as I go, but yeah, so there's one this what he's not Jamaican, but he sings in completely Jamaican, what do you call it? Patois. Patois.

SPEAKER_00

You can't do that these days, can you?

SPEAKER_01

These days you can't do it. But there's even lines where it says people say that I come from Gmail cart, like and he does all this sort of stuff. It's better than that, slightly. But yeah, there's a little bit in it as well when he says, Do you look down my pants? I did look top your bottom. Yeah, because it's are you sure your mommy said that? I'm telling you down, I'm telling you, because I was the same as you're telling you down. I'm not turning into it, I'm telling you now. Hearing me now. I've uh but I thought, like, I thought, did he say it lick you boom boom down, boom, boom, down? But it's not his boom boom down. And then I looked at the rest of it, and yeah, it says, like, it's not, yeah, it's it's it's obviously about someone snitching on him. Um Informer. I don't know what the bit is before that off the top of my head.

SPEAKER_02

Never thought about that. That's like one of those uh Frank Skinner mentioned idiotic eureka in forma, so it's somebody who snitched on him, yeah. I know never really thought about it like that.

SPEAKER_00

Which is why a licky bum bum down fits, because it's like kissing police as bum or something, isn't it? So I that's I genuinely thought that's what it was. Many, many years, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And then obviously, if he sets out his pants and he's looks up his bottom, like he says in the lyrics as well. A lick you bum bum down. I'm not sure that is a lyric, by the way. I'm telling you now that is a lyric. Check that out.

SPEAKER_00

I'm telling you now that I'm on my work laptop. There's absolutely no way I'm typing in Snow look up my bottom.

SPEAKER_01

Are we putting him through though? Are we putting him through?

SPEAKER_02

I mean, to me too, then I I think There She Goes is is the number one spot. I mean, we don't necessarily need to oh we do need to decide normal. Yeah, we do, we do, we do. Yeah, there she goes number one. Yeah, I think Duke probably number four. We don't need to rank three and four, but dope probably number four. The impression that I get, I didn't remember that until I listened to it. It's alright, but I think Informer probably steals a number two score.

SPEAKER_00

It's ridiculous the impression I get as well. It's like some bloke singing that I mean I can't say anything. Some bloke singing that can't sing, but it it's like proper like gravelly, but I thought he were about 65. Yeah, but it's not 50 a day, but now he's just some bloke, in he.

SPEAKER_01

Well, Snow is the uh the first Canadian white rapper to go through into the into the next stage. There's gonna be more. Who knows who's next? Uh yes, Julian then to for group B.

Group Stage Kicks Off Strong

SPEAKER_02

Really strong start for me personally. Your woman by White Town. I I absolutely love that song. Um number one, 1996, Mammo number five, another probably crowd pleaser, I would think. Uh number one in 1999, Black Velvet, um Alana Miles. I I didn't know that was Alana Miles until I listened to it for the research purposes, but I certainly know the song. And uh I touch myself by the Divinals, which only got to number ten in 1990.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. So this is a stra I this is tough one, this I think. I think that uh it's a good group. It's a good group, and I know that um our our friend Mo Money Meeking thinks Mambo number five is a favourite for this tournament when I sent in the groups. I think I'd be putting this out, to be honest. I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

I think there's a there's an easy bottom place. It's like when you're doing multiple choice, if you don't know, there's generally one you can rule out. I struggle to see one real kind of weakness in there. I don't is there anything uh Mr. Webster you can rule out from that group?

SPEAKER_00

To be honest, um yeah, Mambo number five.

SPEAKER_01

Oh really? Well uh Stephen King once had an interview that his wife threatened to divorce him because he was so obsessed with the imagine him writing his horror, Mambo number five. I know that don't say that in the song, by the way. The royal family when he's when yeah when he's painting uh the thing and he goes Mambo number. To a completely different tune at the end.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, when it's Mambo number five. And I I take you back, like I'm second guessing myself. Now I'm looking at them, I could I could put them all in any order pretty much.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, really? I mean, I mean for me personally, obviously, I there's no kind of deciding votes, we all have to agree, but for what it's worth, I think your woman has to go through for me. I don't know if you two would would have that too.

SPEAKER_01

I think I'd probably have that at number one. It's got more nostalgia for me. The the other two, Black Velvet and I touched myself, feel like 80s songs to me. Do you know what I mean? I just think they're a bit more 80s than 90s. They don't really got that nostalgia for me.

SPEAKER_00

Uh true. There is that. I mean, I was tempted to say White Town bottom for definite for me, just to wind Liam up because I know it's a big favourite. But yeah, um, I yeah, I've genuinely got no preference in this crowd. I think as the ultimate fence sitter, I'd I'd be happy to with you two as the host, um, go with whatever you went with.

SPEAKER_01

Well, should we go for that as number one and then number two? Black Velvet's probably the better song, I think, other than I touch myself. When I when you put it up there, I thought, oh god, I can't stand that. And then when I listened to it, I thought it's not bothered. Um I touch myself as well. It's a little bit naughty, isn't it? To be honest.

SPEAKER_02

Well, it's one of them in it. It's not it's uh obviously Tufty Club, famous for uh innuendo. There's no innuendo in this. This is basically just saying I I I masturbate to the thought of you, I think.

SPEAKER_00

It's pretty much it's a single entendre, isn't it? And you might like this.

SPEAKER_01

That makes me recall that. I think about you, I think about you and I have a wank. Whoa. Um, yeah, the same people who wrote that that song also wrote Like a Virgin.

SPEAKER_03

Tough to club.

SPEAKER_01

No, yeah, wrote Tough to Club. No, Like a Virgin, Eternal Flame, and true colours. So, yeah. This is probably not even the biggest hit.

SPEAKER_02

For me, possibly I'd I'd go your woman, Mambo number five, but I'm certainly not I'm willing to let Mambo number five go if you two think it's in the bottom two. I can't fight too strongly for it. I I like it, I think it's very, very sort of cheeky, very cheesy number.

SPEAKER_00

This it's it's very nice, I guess. Um I think it is Mambo number five and black velvet vying for second for me. Um and I don't know if I'm swayed though, because I'm a I'm uh not swayed the band, but swayed by the fact that I I do I I do try and play a bit of bass, but I'm also a very lazy man, and I just like the fact that the bass player in that black velvet song has got away with just playing one note all the way through. Doom doom doom doom doodom.

SPEAKER_01

Does it make any does it make a difference that Mambo number five's got to number one twice? Because obviously it were covered by Bob the Builder in uh in 2001.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, definitely, but yeah, that's definitely ruled it out for me. Is that ruled it out? Neil Morrissey Neil Morrissey's solid its name.

SPEAKER_01

Neil Morrissey's had more number ones than Morrissey. I bet he's so angry about that as well, Morrissey.

SPEAKER_00

Like from deep down, he's furious about that. If I thought that's a great idea, let's put it through then just to piss Morrissey off. Okay, we'll put it listen to this.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I like it, yeah. Yeah, we'll have it winning it. Yeah, yeah, Mambo number five um goes through them. Yeah, I think. And then the other one is uh go on, uh, your woman.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, really good that one.

SPEAKER_01

Right, just putting those through to the next round, and now we are into group C, which is Fall In by Julie Cruz, um, also known as the Twin Peak soundtrack, number seven in 1998. Music sounds better with you, uh Stardust, 1998. Baby I Love Your Way, Big Mountain, number two in 1994, and I love your smile by Shanice, number two, in 1992. What's the what's the original? What's the initial thoughts here?

SPEAKER_00

Uh to me, I've got the one. Yeah, I was just gonna say I've got this down as my death, you know, group of death by boredom. Because I I gen I genuinely the the falling Julie Cruz one, I I genuinely had no idea what it was. It's because when you sent we're doing 90s, I thought this is right in my wheelbarrow. You sent me the list, um, said I'll give them a list in. I'm like, well, I literally know them all, apart from Julie Two. I touched myself as one of them, and as soon as I started listening to it, I remembered the Julie Cruz one. I started playing it, I'm like, Oh, it's that Twin Peaks. I never watched Twin Peaks, which probably didn't help. Oh, yeah, it's that in there. I know, I know now. But then now instantly forgot it. And every time I tried listening to it again, I thought I'll I even listened to it earlier before this, just to like try and remind myself, I've instantly forgot it again. So for me, it's very unmemorable. Um, and then the others, I think, yeah, I think Baby I Love Your Way is quite a boring song. I love it.

SPEAKER_01

And it's a cover song. I don't know if we're allowed to have cover songs. I'm gonna bring that up. It is a cover song, so yeah. No, it shouldn't do, I suppose. If it's is it seen as like, yeah, uh yeah, and it's like a big hit for him, and it's and it's a another reggae sort of song, which is obviously good for me. Not Canadian, though, not Canadian this time. I think I'd have probably had Fallen at number one by uh Julie Cruz and probably music sounds better with you at number two. But I'm more than if if you want to if you want to get rid of that early doors uh webding, I'm certainly not gonna be um storming out.

SPEAKER_00

You've got every opportunity now to convince me it's the greatest song ever because I can't remember it again.

SPEAKER_01

Boom, boom, boom.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah, I remember it again now. Boom, yeah, exactly.

SPEAKER_02

I mean it's kind of atmospheric, but it's one of those songs you've got to be in absolutely the right mood to sit and listen to that. And and I think you're so very rarely in that mood where you want you like some of this sort of like quite boring progressive stuff, don't you Andrew? Um yeah, yeah. I love this, I think it's brilliant. Boom. No, it's it's it's like background lift music, isn't it? It's it's it's not it's not for me. And I and I don't I have a thing against songs that have been used as TV themes as well.

SPEAKER_01

So prejudiced man. Yeah, well, to be fair, where we did our theme tunes thing, we um we did we I was gonna have Twin Peaks, but this actually came out before Twin Peaks. Twin Peaks sort of took the music from this as the theme tune, although it was all written by David Lynch anyway. But yeah, but I don't know if that's changed anything.

SPEAKER_02

I I'm not with that. I I don't I don't like it. Music sounds better with you, I think it's probably the best in the group. Yeah. Um agree. I quite like Baby I Love Your Way. I get it, it's not the most exciting song ever. Quite like it. I love the literally, uh yeah, smart. I love that bit of the song, but it's boring in itself. So I could go out, I could be swayed either way. I personally, for me, falling probably falls to the bottom of the group. But music sounds better with you tops the group, and then I would have either of the other two. I'd I'd be quite happily persuaded either way.

SPEAKER_01

So we'll let you decide this one then, uh Mr. Webb Ding. Well, if Falling goes out and Music Sound Better With You is already through, baby I love your way or I love your smile.

SPEAKER_00

I I think they're both very unmemorable songs. I know well, I know them all, but they're just forgettable. I've not forgotten them, so I'm just contradicting myself before I end every single I start I I start in a sentence with good intentions, then by the time I get to the end of it, I've contradicting myself. But I would say of the of the two, the one that is probably the better song and a bit more memorable is Baby I Love Your Way, I would say.

SPEAKER_01

Ooh, baby, I love your way. Every day.

SPEAKER_00

I don't think he says it like that.

SPEAKER_02

It sounds like he says yeah yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah, it does, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's the uh Jamaican stuff going on again, isn't it? Yeah, exactly. Yeah, right. Over to you for group D.

Turtles Rap And Sunscreen Arguments

SPEAKER_00

Mark Group D, um turtle power by partners in crime with a K. Number one, 1990. How bizarre! OMC, I'm gonna say Q. That was a poor effort, that I'm not gonna lie. Uh number five, nineteen ninety-six. Everybody's free, open brackets to wear sunscreen, close brackets, Baz Lehrman, number one and nineteen ninety-nine, and uh I'm not gonna attempt the sweet harmony saying it by uh liquid, number sixteen in nineteen ninety-two and number fourteen in nineteen ninety-five.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, double double hit for it there. I know that Liam loves Sweet Harmony, don't you, Liam? Not just I mean, I mean like just like well, Harmony likes the song Sweet Harmony.

SPEAKER_02

Uh yeah, I do, uh, but I don't love the the lyrics to it. But I'll there's an instrumental version on YouTube that I recommend anybody who likes to go for a solo walk or a dog walk, play that very loud through your headphones. It's uh it's incredible.

SPEAKER_01

I my favourite here would probably be How Bazaar, I think you're gonna say I think I'd have to go. Why is everyone saying it like that? That's a perfectly accurate impression. It's almost like it's a bit like run DMC in a way. Like um, I think I'd go for that, and I'd probably go for everyone's free-to-wear sunscreen because I think the first time I heard that, I thought this is like the deepest thing I've ever heard in my entire life when I first heard that song.

SPEAKER_02

Oh no, I I disagree. I I think it's like um what's the word of it? It's kind of like uh shit, but spiritual advice by numbers almost.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, oh yeah, I agree, I agree, but as a song, like it came out when what we were oh 1999, so just last school or whatever. I just thought, oh, this is like unlike anything I've ever seen.

SPEAKER_02

I I'm I I could kind of sort of tell do your best. If your best isn't good enough, don't worry, you're fine.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I don't know why it's credited.

SPEAKER_02

If you can read it every day, read it once a year. Sound like Trump. Big of me and have a wank.

SPEAKER_01

Um I think I don't know why it's uh credited to Baz Lerman, because it were Mary Schmidt who actually Yeah, why why does he get credit for it? And the and I thought maybe it were him speaking, but it's not. It's an Australian voiceover guy called Lee Perrow.

SPEAKER_02

So maybe famous didn't some teacher read it to his school kids? Is that urban myth? Or did was it some of the speech at a school?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, this is it went from I'm gonna say, um, and this is true, my our uh old science teacher read it at our assembler. That's not where it originated, though. That'd be mad, wouldn't it, if it originated me away at Sheffield. But yeah, he read it out, and I'd not heard the song before that. I thought, oh, that's pretty good that he's done that. But yeah, it was um it were a newspaper column, actually. Uh Chicago Tribune for the people who are graduating.

SPEAKER_02

U I personally I really don't like it. I I have had a huge issue with it because I I think it's so pretentious in what it thinks it is, actually, compared to what it is. So for me, it it's bottom. I mean, obviously if you've got it top, then uh no, no, no, no, no. I'm more than it's your call where where it sits, really.

SPEAKER_01

Is how is Albazar your number one web thing?

SPEAKER_00

No, no, not at all. It's uh this group for me, it's uh Sweet Harmony by Mile.

SPEAKER_01

Let's go together. I'm happy to put that number one. Are we having Albazaar number two or can you put a fight for the turtles?

SPEAKER_02

I can't really do much for turtle power. It's it's captured a moment that kids said to the parents, can you buy me that? I don't think it's very good.

SPEAKER_00

Well, the only thing I've got going for that is I believe, and I'm not going to prove it now, but I believe I can remember the entire thing. I can wrap the entire thing. And as I said, can you give us a bar? Can you give us a few bars? Um give you the opening, I guess. Yeah, that's a good shell. They're the heroes for in this day and age. Who could ask for more? The crime wave is high, with muggins mysterious, all police and detectives. I'm going with the stop there anyway. But I think literally can go on. If it keeps going through, can you do another verse?

SPEAKER_01

We'll knock it out so you don't have to um.

SPEAKER_02

Do you remember it all because she loved it then? Is that is that a kind of real affectionate?

SPEAKER_00

When I said that it was in my wheelbarrow this this entire subject, it's because I entered the 90s, as it were, um, as a 11-year-old. So literally just starting big school in 1990 and therefore left it as like an approximation of a man at 21. Um, so I literally grew up listening to and and this is obviously right 1990, young, young, old enough to be getting into music at age 11, young enough to still be into Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. That's why it's lodged in my brain. And that and that's why a lot of these are going to be the same, aren't you? You were leaving school in 99. Yeah. I was I was at university thinking, what a bag of shit, you know, because I'm a couple of years older than you, and you were leaving school and going, This is the blueprint for my life. Obviously, your voice aren't broken yet at that point.

SPEAKER_01

Can I can I just put something against turtle power? One of the lyrics. Uh part of yeah, uh Raf, it says Raphael's the leader of the group, innit? That's one of the lyrics. Incorrect. And that's incorrect. And apparently songwriters said after, partners in crime said after that they'd actually not really seen the turtles and they just sort of had a guess about what it'd be about.

SPEAKER_00

I reckon in the film Raphael has most of the moody moments as I remember it in the film when it came out in 1990. So they probably just saw about three clips and thought, I he's probably and also it's got less it's got less syllables, so it fits, doesn't it?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I think we knock it out on that though, not about you, Liam.

SPEAKER_00

On that basis alone, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Raphael was the the hot head, the most aggressive of the group, which is why uh Splinter gave him the defensive weapon. Yeah, that what is that part? Is that lyrics?

SPEAKER_00

Didn't didn't fit don't scan, does it?

SPEAKER_02

It doesn't fit into the the bars of the uh the guy gets mad, he's a hat head, so I gave him side today, so he could use those instead. I've not I've not rehearsed that. You you won't believe, but I've not pre-practised that. Uh Group E, Liam.

Indie Pop Versus Reggae Nostalgia

SPEAKER_02

So sorry, are we going Halbazar then? Is Halbazar following?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, Albazaar's gone runner runner up behind Sweet Harmony, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, um so the first one of Group E, you get what you give by the new radicals, got to number five, nineteen ninety-nine. Uh Eat My Goal, which was one I definitely had to look up. Uh Collapsed Lung got to number 18 in 98, Little Britain Dread Zone, and I didn't know it too well. Uh number 20, 1996, and he comes to had stepped by store uh in eat comose, which I didn't actually know despite knowing the song really well. Number four, 1995.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I think there's a clear number one here, which is uh I don't know. Is it for me as as a Jamaican, it's it scores when we missed that up to the street. Yeah, yeah, it's that it's got to be that. It has to be that for me. But New Radicals, I think, is a brilliant pop song.

SPEAKER_00

I'd agree, I think it's an easy one too, this one. I think the other two are just very they've got like one hook each, haven't they, between them pretty much, and yeah, they just they are what they are. But yeah, them two, I think it's an easy one too for this one. This is your this is your group that's got two shit ones in it, you know. Yeah, you've somehow got drawn against Panama and well to go on it, but they did another Panama. Yeah, you know what I mean?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. So what we go for as number one.

SPEAKER_02

I mean the the Hot Stepper I I think takes it, but I yeah, I'm quite happy just either or for those two, I think, but I would go hot stepper.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, we'll go there. Here comes the hot stepper then as the winner. Um and runner up will be uh go on.

SPEAKER_00

I guess what the ghee.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I I had actually had forgot that. Um Group F now, Macarena by Lost El Rio, number two, nineteen ninety-six. Horney, Moose T versus Hot and Juicy, number two, nineteen ninety-eight. It's a fine day, Opus three, number five, nineteen ninety-two, and seventy-four to seventy-five by the Canels, number fourteen, nineteen ninety-five. What are we thinking?

SPEAKER_02

This isn't it? Yeah, it's tricky. Uh it's tough this, because I don't love any, but there's different things that are slightly likable. 74 75, I think, is probably the one I would choose to listen to right now if you said he has to pick one and listen to it. I think the video on it by mouse tea is is quite catchy. It gets a bit repetitive, but I don't I don't hate it. Macarena is one of those that just drives you mad because it got so overplayed at the time. It still is overplayed on on sort of holidays now. It's a fine day. I can't remember that now, but I remember when I listened to it.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah, so I do literally literally the words.

SPEAKER_01

The words are the still it's still new, it's still it's a na na na na that one, yeah. It's gonna be offended. Yeah, I think 74-75 is my favourite, definitely. It's great video as well.

SPEAKER_02

It's yeah, it's quite I don't know. I think it's a lot of these have probably not sort of stood the test of time. I think that could be released today and it'd still be alright. It's not it's not great, but I think it's quite I don't know, it's just quite an easy listen. 74, 75 75.

SPEAKER_01

Any um any thoughts, Mark?

SPEAKER_00

I yeah, I agree. I think that's I I quite I still quite like it. Um I've probably not heard it in about 20 years, but um yeah, I I I can hear it in my head and I would quite happily listen to it, like you say.

SPEAKER_01

God, no reason.

SPEAKER_00

Uh yeah, so we like listen to them. Yeah, exactly.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, is it just as good as the theory?

SPEAKER_02

I think that there was definitely a case, and there may well be I don't know, a handful of people listening to this scene. You've got to put Macarena through. I personally I I'd drop it, I'd I'd have it bottom of the table. I I really don't like it. But it's but it's huge and it's still played to this day. So I I can I can absolutely see the case for it, but I I would have it bottom of my guy.

SPEAKER_01

What about the fact that he says I and uh when he says Macarena? Because I think pre-LG as well. Yeah, pre-LG, yeah. Macarena, I so that that's got going in his favour. I think it's a fine day is the second best song, personally.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I probably would agree, yeah. Yeah, I do think though Horny's kind of I think it's a ridiculous song. Pretty good to the verse. I think it's it's actually quite catchy. Like that. But yeah, I'm not gonna I'm not gonna argue with I'll quite happily have it's a fine day. When I listen to that, that's probably the one that I thought, oh yeah, actually I quite I quite like that.

SPEAKER_01

Uh we got a message sent in about some uh the political episode of by Chris Mann, and he said I'm Horny. Well, no, he said, like I can't remember if someone had said like I'm Starmer, Kia, Kia Starmer. He was like saying if like if politicians had to come into the room as um do you know, like with the like theme tunes, oh that do you think he'd like he'd have done better if that had been if that had been happening? Would you be still being like the Prime Minister now?

SPEAKER_02

You could do any though, can you? Oh, Kia Starmer, I it'd be amazing that wouldn't it?

SPEAKER_01

Don't honestly, because I can imagine Burnham doing this, but I'd I'd that's amazing. All of them should do that, actually. Oh Nigel Farage, aye right, we've got it's a fine day going through. I'm handing over to you for group G, Mark.

Overplayed Anthems And Hidden Gems

SPEAKER_00

Right, group G, uh got What's Up by Four Non Blondes, number two, nineteen ninety-three. I'll be there for you by the Rembrandt's number three, nineteen ninety-five, drinking in LA, Bram Van 3000, number three, nineteen ninety-nine, and ain't no love, open brackets, ain't no use, close brackets by sub sub featuring Melanie Williams, which was number three in nineteen ninety-three.

SPEAKER_02

Have you got a winner, Mark? Well, if you've read a mark, have you got a top? Because I've I've got a clear top in there for me.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I've got a clear loser, and it's the bottom one, the sub sub one, simply because it reminds me of Sheffield Wednesday.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Because this is this is an incredibly niche memory. But you know, you know when football focus used to have FA Cup build-up from like first thing in the morning, the you know, grandson used to be added over to it. Yeah, P Ags um were in were in the uh FA Cup final, weren't they? Sheffield Wednesday FC. Not the P Ags, obviously. You've got you've got you've got listeners way further afield than Sheffield. They're never they're never gonna know what I'm on about there, are they? Um so um, yeah, they they and obviously as a Sheffield United fan myself, um it wound me up, and this was the music they used, but you know, so obviously they just kept using some music between sort of clips to go on. Now it's back to how they got through round four, and it was diddle-da, diddle-da, diddle-d-and when it went through that stupid noise, boom! Wednesday about to come like the zoom and it's great. So it I've got tough memories.

SPEAKER_01

Well, funnily enough, I'm just reading now that their studio burnt down, and now we know what did it, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Quite right to it.

SPEAKER_01

Uh they went on to form uh the doves, uh sub sub. Uh we were a far better band than subsub at Archie.

SPEAKER_00

It's many more different as well.

SPEAKER_01

No, no, sure about it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They played one of their old songs when I saw them live once, it weren't they? So I can't watch it. Yeah, they went to form doves. Uh Melanie Singer used to sing with soul to soul, a belly singer. Melanie Williams used to sing with soul to soul as well.

SPEAKER_02

But I think you've rolled that one on the list that even after realisting today, I still didn't really remember it. So, yeah, that goes out. For that reason, I'm quite happy for it to be bottom.

SPEAKER_01

Drinking in LA is one of my favourites for the tournament.

SPEAKER_02

To me, that that's the clear winner. I think that's a great song. I think it's it's kind of timeless in a sense that it doesn't feel 90s that song. I I really like it, even when I hear it today.

SPEAKER_01

The Rembrandt's let's be honest, it is a really good song, but I think the the sort of overplay of it on the Friends theme tune did you know you were only originally one minute long and they expanded it because Friends Got Big into a proper song.

SPEAKER_02

It was that's it when we did the Richard Hillman episode, was it?

SPEAKER_01

No, that were one of dies. Oh, yeah, yeah. Sorry.

SPEAKER_02

Uh 4 Non Bonds, I didn't know it by the title, what's up? And when I listened to it, I thought, oh yeah, obviously I know this, but I didn't know it by that title. Well, I don't think that necessarily works against it, but I would go drinking in LA, and then for me, probably the Rembrandt's number two. What are you thinking, Webding?

SPEAKER_00

I would go, I've I've obviously got a number four, I would go number one drinking in LA. Yeah, definitely. I would probably go for Non Blonde's number two. So you've got the casting vote, deciding vote. I'm gonna go for sub sub.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, no, I'm I'm gonna go for the Rembrandt because I never really liked the what's up song. I I don't know. I just I've never liked it at all, to be fair. Do you know she also wrote um coming up, so you better get the party started, which is a better song in my opinion. Shamone. Yeah, so I'm gonna put put put up, I'm gonna send them home. I'm gonna send the four non-blondes home, and we're having drinking in LA and the Rembrandts going into the uh yeah, into the next round.

SPEAKER_02

Right, it's the last group.

Theme Tunes And Advert Songs Debate

SPEAKER_02

So we're nearly through into the knockout stages. The first one we've got is the X-Files by Mark Snow, um, number two, nineteen ninety-six. Can you dig it? I don't know if anyone's gonna go, yes, yes, we can. Uh Mock Turtles, number 18, 1991. Flatbeat, Mr. Ozo, Oizo, I don't know. Wazio, is it?

SPEAKER_01

Were it Wazio? Was it Wazio? Mr. Wazio. I don't know. Anyway.

SPEAKER_02

Anyway, 1999 got to number one. And stay I missed you by Lisa. Is it Lob, Lower and Nine Stories, number six in 1994? Uh I mean, I don't know if you so Stay I Missed You. I I love the opening lyric. I know it does repeat during the song, but I think that intro is fantastic.

SPEAKER_01

Um You stay, I only cry when I want to. Just in case people didn't know. That's uh you got the tune on and the lyrics in all that bit. What did you say?

SPEAKER_02

What I want to you stay.

SPEAKER_01

I only shit all the time. Yeah, whatever it is, yeah, yeah. Yeah. So people I didn't know that was called that off that, you see. So but I know.

SPEAKER_02

The X-Files is obviously the X-Files theme tune, which is a great piece of music, but I I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

I'm not I'm not sure whether that can really sort of do you know he made his own lyrics up, uh Mark Snow for this. It's just no lyrics in the release version. It says he used to amuse himself by singing the X-Files is a show with music by Mark Snow. But I've obviously got the tune wrong, but he does it to the tune.

SPEAKER_02

I think that puts me off even more, to be honest. I weren't I don't know, I weren't a big fan anyway. Uh can you dig it, Mock Turtles? I think that's my number one for this. Incredibly 90s that song, though, isn't it? Like yeah, that that really is kind of a 90s song. Flatbeat's quite catchy, but it's it's not great. I don't know. I'm I'm quite happy to sort of go with anyone who's got any strong opinions in this group. What are you thinking, Marcus?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, can you dig it? It's uh it just it weren't used on shitloads of adverts as well.

SPEAKER_01

I'm just reading now, yeah. It got back into the charts in 2003 um after a Vodevone T TV advert featuring Mr. David Beckham.

SPEAKER_00

There you go. So quite recently, like I said, 2003. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I think we should have that as number one personally.

SPEAKER_00

I'd I'd happily go with that number one.

SPEAKER_01

I has it got a you, by the way. Am I making this up? Is it a can you with a you digger? Is that it's not like with a you it's sorry, with the letter U. It's not, is it? I don't know where I've got that from.

SPEAKER_02

Well you what you've researched the you know when it got to number 18 in 991, so I presume it's a good one.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but I've just yeah, but I've just put it through the top of your head, did you? As I've put it through now and typed it in, I put a U as in, like, yeah, anyway, wrong. Run her up, but we're having run her up then.

SPEAKER_02

You've you've thrown me, you've phased me. So sorry, what what's the debate? What why does it be?

SPEAKER_00

As the X Files got an X the sex files.

SPEAKER_01

Um yeah, I don't think we can have the X Files going through because it's quite it's quite sort of a nice piece of music, but you've just said you eight TV themes.

SPEAKER_02

That's what I mean, yeah. So for that reason, if if it was only released as a chart single, might be interested, but as a TV show theme, I can't get on board with it, I don't think.

SPEAKER_01

Well, if we put Flat Beat through, we've got two adverts going through there, aren't we? Vodafone and obviously the Levi's advert with Flat Eric became.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but there were songs before there were adverts, weren't they?

SPEAKER_01

I would have thought so, yeah. Yeah, they must have been, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Oh yeah, can you dig it where? Definitely. But yeah, I mean Flat Beat and B were probably done for the advert there, weren't it?

SPEAKER_01

When it Levi's been he's got loads of albums out, so maybe. I think it's between Flat Beat and Stay.

SPEAKER_00

So I'm happy definitely Stay is definitely the better song, but if it if you're thinking sort of and and and it's I think it's on the first now that's what I call music album I ever owned. So it's got a oh we'll have that in. We'll have it. You know, even even the shit songs on that though have got a special place in my heart. So if you'd put on like any old crap from that, I'd have wanted that through just because it's like yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Well, we're in through to now to the round of 16.

Round Of 16 Eliminations Begin

SPEAKER_01

I'll read out the uh uh the the matches before we start. There she goes versus Mambo number five. Music sounds better with you versus Albazaar. Here comes the hot stepper versus it's a fine day. Okay, you dig it versus I'll be there for you. Your woman versus informer, sweet harmony versus baby, I love you. 7475 versus you want to get what you give, and drinking in LA versus stay. Um by Lisa Loeb. So we start obviously There She Goes Manbo. There she goes, Mambo number five. I don't think this are we actually gonna have a debate about this.

SPEAKER_02

I I don't even need to discuss it. I'm confident you'll put the right one through.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Mark, have you got any anything to add?

SPEAKER_00

Forget it. Just get get on with it, move on, this is this is your classic mismatch, 3-0, 4-0 sort of second round match, isn't it?

SPEAKER_01

It's like when someone gets through and you think, oh have they done really well to get ah they're out, they're out straight away. Music sounds better with you versus Al Bazaar, however. I think there's a more debate to be had there.

SPEAKER_02

It's tough that one. Um How Bazaar, how bizarre? It's probably more sort of iconic in a sense that it it's distinctive. There's nothing else really like it. Music sounds better, we use a bit more generic, but it probably is a better song. And I've kind of made a case for both there. I I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

I think it's tough this one. Uh anything.

SPEAKER_00

Quite similar in a way, as well, haven't you? Like kind of annoying vocals, prominent guitar.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I I'm I I could be swayed by we've not heard uh Roy's impression of it yet, have we?

SPEAKER_01

Well, how bazar, how bazaar?

SPEAKER_02

I'll tell you what, we'll put him through. Yeah, do you know what for that bit actually?

SPEAKER_01

You make it every time I look around as well. Well, I don't forget it's got loads of good bits in it, actually. I had it like that. Yeah, it has to go over.

SPEAKER_02

How bizarre.

SPEAKER_01

Music Sounds Better With You is great. It's by one half of Daft Punk as well. Um which I also actually think that goes against it because it's it's technically as a one-it one day, but you know cheating, aren't they? They've had the fun, aren't they? Do you know what I mean? They've had the fun. So, yeah, we'll put it through then. How bizarre through to the quarterfinals. Again, I think it's a pretty easy one. Here comes the hot stepper versus it's a fine day.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, Mark, and he's I I think I know which I prefer, but I don't know if I'm gonna go against the the group dynamic here, so I'll I'll hold back.

SPEAKER_00

Chick-a-chang change, get it through.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's gotta be that. A check a change change becomes the hot again. It's another one where it's got so many great bits in it that if we put it through, we can sing even more later down the line. So were you going for that, Liam? You alright with that?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I didn't know if if because obviously it's a bit daft if you two kind of go the other way, because it's fine day possibly is a better song, but no, I I personally I the hot stepper goes through for me.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. Uh nice bit of reggae into the quarterfinals. Uh matchup for can you dig it versus I'll be there for you.

SPEAKER_02

I suspect I'm gonna go against you two here, so I'll get in first. I would go I'll be there for you by the Rembrandts. I think you two might go the other way.

SPEAKER_01

I would probably go can you dig it? Yeah, what about you, Mark?

SPEAKER_00

I think I pretty if push comes to shove, I would, yeah. I think yeah, it's a bit too cheesy that Rembrandt song for me.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Okay, can you dig it? Just squeeze us through. I'll put a you again as I've put it in for some reason. Um, your woman versus Informa. Big battle, yeah. The Canadians own Informa, the first the first Canadian reggae artist. Is it is he going home at this stage?

SPEAKER_02

I know William's gonna go for I mean it's it's hard for me to be impartial because your woman is is probably in my sort of top 30, 40, 50 all-time songs. So I for me there's it's not even close. But but by the way, just in case you're thinking, well, that's won it for me, it hasn't, because there's another at least one in there that would would match. So there's probably two actually. So so yeah, I I'm going your woman quite comfortably for me.

SPEAKER_01

I think I prefer to listen to your woman, but Informer has got a lot of nostalgia for me. Do you know he wrote it in jail as well, which I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Where where you siding from this one, Webbo? Oh dear.

SPEAKER_00

So so actually that adds an air of sort of realism to it, didn't he? It probably has been informed upon, and he's probably the reason you're in there. I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

He's penning a letter to the guards, like he's the informer. You're never gonna believe what I'm gonna tell you. Yeah, come on down.

SPEAKER_01

Well it's it says yeah, blah blah blah, he got into a bar fight that turned violent. Well, how could a fight not turn violent? And Snow was jailed because he refused to snitch uh on the people. So we got to say they keep going forward. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And um yeah, it says here the rapid fire um fire lyrics include you know, Jamaican slang, making them notoriously difficult to understand.

SPEAKER_02

Obviously, not for you, but yeah, for the for the rest of us.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah, for the obviously from a homeland Jamaican. Yeah, that that's not for me. On the other one, what I do like about your woman is that it was one of the old fashioned, you don't really get him anymore.

SPEAKER_02

Came out of no uh sort of Well again, I don't know if it's Uber Myth, what wasn't it? A guy kind of produced it on his own in his room without any such.

SPEAKER_01

He's got loads of albums out. It was just like he I think I'm sorry, yeah, Cyber Mayo uh got hold of it, Radio One, and he just played it, and everyone were like, What's this? This is amazing. And then yeah, he never he refused to go on TV, refused to go on radio, refused to do like any appear in his own video to promote it. Man of the people.

SPEAKER_00

Fair play to the man. And well, then for that reason, um We're putting him through. I think I'm gonna side William and send send Snow home to well, Canada or Jamaica, whichever one he wants to go to. That's it.

SPEAKER_01

It's uh it's um his his his follow-up singles uh Girl You Hurt Me, which sounds so much different to informer, don't like so imagine like that that girl you hurt me, and a bit a little bomb bomb down. Anyway, sweet harmony versus baby I love your way.

SPEAKER_02

Sweet Harmony, fairly comfortable, I think, but I'd I that's obviously my take. But baby I love your way is there's just not much about it, is there? It's fine.

SPEAKER_00

Baby I love your way every day. Uh thinking about it, I think it was on that same now that what that's what I call music album that I've that I first got with my first ever CD player. So uh that's probably why I snuck it through, and it probably didn't deserve to go through. For that, I apologise. And yeah, it's we go.

SPEAKER_02

So it's quite a nice song, isn't it? I I don't think it's like I I think it's earned its right in the in the last sixteen, but I I think this is as far as it goes.

SPEAKER_01

This is a big this is a big match, this one. Seventy four seventy five versus you only get what you give.

SPEAKER_02

It's tough this one. Well it is, but I think it's tough in the same way as like when you get I can't I I don't want to slag off any nations. We're we're we're multi-global, but when you get two countries you don't really want to watch and it's like the prime time slot and you think, oh for God's sake. I I'm not really bothered. Um you're not bothered. Oh they're both they're both fine. They're both fine. I struggle to see a kind of real argument either way in this particular Mark.

SPEAKER_00

I get what you give with just absolutely everywhere at the time, weren't it? Like mass massive song. And and for that reason, I I think I work in in a supermarket at the time, and after hours we used to put Al M FM over at Tannoy thing, and it was just it seems to be on every five minutes. Like they'd play this, and then they'd play another song, and they'd have to play that again. Just absolutely sick of it. Um and it is it was a good song, but I think it just pissed me off in the end. So I think in reality it probably is the bigger one and the better one and the more memorable one, but it will right end at 90s as well, weren't it? It feels a bit sort of borderline for me. So I I think I'd prefer 74-75.

SPEAKER_01

I I'm with you in that. I think when it I was sick of it. I think I'm working at Andy's Records at this point, and again, you had to play all the chart stuff. And it one of them, you're like, it's all over this now. But then when it sort of did because it's not really one you hear much anymore, I don't think. And then like ten years down the line, you're like, that's a good song, though.

SPEAKER_02

These sort of vocals get a bit sort of pathetic.

SPEAKER_01

We'll kick your asses at the end.

SPEAKER_00

And then whoops as well, I think, after which kind of loses, you know, you you're issuing the threat and then you do sort of a bit of a whoop. It's not you've lost your threat. You've undermined your threat, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

It's quite an interesting story though. He got sick of fame, he's only had a hit. Like he's like, oh, if I've had enough of this. He had his hit single, so they didn't even release a second single. Well, they they released it, but he refused to do the video for it, and he completely ended the band. And he went on to write it. He went on to write Leffers a Roller Coaster, just wanna fight it. Which has obviously got the amazing. Yeah, you nearly got me punched in a fight. That's alright. Which is great. He's all over these camp fights, isn't he? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Uh and he also wrote Murder on the Dance Floor, which again is a bit violent, isn't it? Murder on the Darns Floor.

SPEAKER_02

I think you have to call it Murder on the Dance Floor, by the way.

SPEAKER_01

Murder on the Darns Floor. We'll put 74-75 to I think that's a better sort of he's a double G Greg as well, isn't he?

SPEAKER_00

Like Greg Wallace, which for me is for that alone, he probably needs to go.

SPEAKER_01

Before I I watched the documentary about uh What It Wonders not even in preparation for this, it's Todd in the Shadows every every month or something he does a Warnick Wonder as a bat thing on air. He was really controversial before this, the guy at the New Radicals. And one of his uh one of his lyrics is something along the lines of you be my Hitler and I'll be your Jew. And that's not me being sort of I've not got that wrong. That's exactly what he sings.

SPEAKER_00

He better not have got it wrong now. Well, that were a really controversial.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but yeah, um, yeah. So he deserves to go out for that lyric, don't I? To be fair. Uh right, and the final um what we've got on the thing is uh drinking in LA versus stay. I think this is an easy drinking in LA win, personally.

SPEAKER_02

Just remind me what stay stay is. It's the USA, yeah. Um I talk shit all the time.

SPEAKER_01

That's it, yeah, he's got it.

SPEAKER_02

I do like it, but I yeah, I do think drinking in LA is a is a comfortable. Like that there's not it's not close really for me, I don't think.

SPEAKER_01

No, I think um anything from you, Mark? No, agreed.

SPEAKER_00

I can't add anything to that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I think that's it. So we're into the quarterfinal matchup.

Quarter-Finals With Strong Opinions

SPEAKER_02

My mind on my money, on my money on my mind.

SPEAKER_01

Again, it's got loads of things that we can keep going for. Uh There She Goes versus How Bazaar. Here comes the hot serpent versus can you dig it? Your woman versus sweet harmony, the Liam Derby, and 74-75 versus drinking in LA. First up is There She Goes versus How Bazaar. I think we know what the better song is here.

SPEAKER_02

But yeah, I mean one's kind of got through on sort of novelty and and nonsense, but I think at this point the better song has to win.

SPEAKER_01

Can I put some I don't know what you think about this, Mark. Can I put something out there that might change this? Might be a shock here. But this actually came out in 1988. There she goes, but it wasn't a hit until 1990. Does that change? You should be bringing that up in the the group. This is like Trump influencing things later on, isn't it?

SPEAKER_02

Like it's not actually a 90s song. I had a word with him, I said, you know, he's a tough guy, he's a genuine guy.

SPEAKER_01

He's a genuine guy. He said no, no, no.

SPEAKER_00

But they did release suspend suspended the uh the 80s. Yeah, they got rid of it.

SPEAKER_01

But they did release it in 88, but it didn't chart. They released it again in 89, and he got to number 59. So it's why it's a 1-8 wonder in the 90s. So it is a 1-8 wonder in the in the 90s. Does this does this affect how you feel about this song at all, Mark?

SPEAKER_00

I'll allow it on a technicality. I think. I think uh well, not even a technicality, it's it genuinely is a 90s 1-8 wonder, isn't it?

SPEAKER_02

So Mark Webster have decided 91 hit wonder, no red card, no red wind.

SPEAKER_00

But we're in his 80s, yeah, no red card.

SPEAKER_01

Say to the Albazar, hey hey Albazar, fuck you. Um that's uh sad times though, because he is actually dead. The um the uh lead singer of OMC.

SPEAKER_00

Did you bring that up after you we knew we'd knocked him out? So we didn't.

SPEAKER_01

I did, yeah, yeah, yeah. You're only 40 as well. You're only 40. Um so sad, you've knocked out a very, very um dead man. Quarter-not quarter final. Here comes the hot stepper versus can you dig it?

SPEAKER_02

I I'm I'm just not hugely into can you dig it? So again, don't dig it. Don't dig it, can you dig it? No. No, I can't. Do not dig it. Can you dig it? No, no, I can't, I don't know. No, no, no, no, no.

SPEAKER_01

You did no, not really, mate. Nah. It was uh intended to be a B-side, and you'll not know this, Liam. But do you know the pop fact? It's not even a pop, like a fact about this uh band Webding. I do not. The brother, the front man, his brother, is none other than Mr. Steve Coogan. Martin Coogan fronts him, uh Steve Coogan's brother.

SPEAKER_02

I like how you like assume my lack of musical knowledge. You you won't know this one. You won't know this. You won't know that. Did you know that? This is for the adults. Do you know this one?

SPEAKER_01

Did you know that?

SPEAKER_02

I had my suspicions.

SPEAKER_01

Well from Manchester. Uh yeah, so I don't know if that is a I don't know. He's he's obviously had a tough five.

SPEAKER_02

The Hot Stepper's a fantastic song to be kind of getting through to semi-finals. I just excuse me, Mr. Officer.

SPEAKER_01

I think you're five minutes. I read into this, like I sort of like, like, what is it about realistically? And obviously, it Hot Step is a Jamaican. Well, I say obviously, Hot Stepper's a Jamaican slang term for a fugitive or a criminal on the run from the law. But in this song, instead of committing murder, he's actually a lyrical gangster. They're arrested him for his lyrics. That's how like sort of that's how badass he is. He's he's on the run because he's lyrical.

SPEAKER_02

It does say, I scores him, Mr. Officer.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, murderer. Do you love him like that? Yeah, um, and he what are you doing?

SPEAKER_00

I'm the lyrical gangster.

SPEAKER_01

He's a lyrical gangster.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and then he's at the policeman then saying, like, murder it, like in a question way.

SPEAKER_01

And then he's like, a school's a Mr. Officer. That is like saying, No, I'm not Mr. Officer. Yeah. Who says Mr. Officer anyway? He does. Yeah, excuse me, Mr. Officer. I think I would probably put here comes the hot stepper through here. But yeah. Yeah. Here comes the hotspot. I would, yeah. Here comes the hot stepper. Um then the quarterfinal next is your woman versus sweet harmony, the Liam Darby.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I I mean for me the bit my favourite is your woman, but I'm I'm I'm happy either way on this one. I'm happy either of these is going through. I I wouldn't argue too strongly against Sweet Harmony, I think it's a good song.

SPEAKER_01

Anything from you, Ding, about this?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'm I'm the other way. I would definitely go uh Sweet Harmony.

SPEAKER_01

Well, I'm gonna knock Sweet Harmony out then because you don't like me. Yeah, I don't like you when I don't like the song. No, I don't I think it's really overrated. I think what Leon's Leon's right in a sense, uh it's got all the makings of a good song. Like it's got all you think, oh this is quite good, it's quite chilled, it's like a bit of like post-rave sort of stuff. And then it just does many, so it sort feels like a bit of a boy band song to me. So I'm knocking that out and we're getting your woman in the uh in the semi final. And then the final quarter final is 7475 versus drinking in in a leg.

SPEAKER_02

Any any I I think I know, any any you two got a strong opinion either way.

SPEAKER_01

I think the two could be my favourite too. Maybe, maybe. I think 7475 is a fantastic song.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I I I like both of them. Um I think I don't know. I think I I think I probably do prefer the big Bramban one. Yeah, yeah. I I agree, yeah. I I don't I don't know why I don't know why though, is it? Yeah, I I think I actually prefer the 7475 as a song, but it's just something about that big Bram Van.

SPEAKER_01

It's quite what's great about that song, it's really like sort of it's like obviously like a bit of rap and stuff, but it's quite sad at the same time. Obviously, they're talking about like just basically wasting the lives, and you know what I mean? What the hell am I doing drinking in L26?

SPEAKER_02

It's quite sad as well that when we heard that we were thinking, God, can you imagine me 26 and now we're sort of like sort of mid-70s or whatever we are?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, what the hell am I doing talking to two other men on an evening about 90s one in 45 with my mind and my money, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

My mind. Um, yeah, I think drinking LA is the better song, just I think it's I'd like to do it a karaoke, but I need a rapper with my. I'm not sure if any of you two are uh I think you've heard my turtle power. Oh, that's a good point, actually. Next next time we're in a karaoke bar. We're going up. I'll do the chorus, you can do the rap, and uh yeah, I think we'll go down a storm. Are we all right? Happy we drinking LA to go through them?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I think so. Yep.

Semi-Finals Then The Final Vote

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So the semi-finals, there she goes versus here comes the hot stepper, which is mad as a semi-final. And your woman versus drinking in LA. So there she goes, is clearly a better song than Here Comes the Hot Stepper. Am I right?

SPEAKER_02

Again, I think this is where you can only get so far by being sort of a bit daft and a bit kind of quite likable. Like there she goes, is a better song, I think. Uh there she there she goes, is probably the one that blows my mind out of the whole lot we've got in here that is a one-hit wonder. It kind of feels like it's cheating because it feels like they should have had another kind of top 10, top 20 hit, and they didn't.

SPEAKER_01

Well, he lost the plot, didn't I? Uh Lee Mavers lost the plot and sort of just never released anything again. I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

I don't know, I don't know the story. I I absolutely love this song. I mean, if you want to kind of get Who Remembers Leeroy being romantic, that this is the sort of song that makes me think of of my Mrs. Jody as well. So it kind of carries extra weight for now.

SPEAKER_01

Here comes the hot stepper.

SPEAKER_02

Well, I mean both in a way, yeah. All four in a way, I suppose.

SPEAKER_01

But brilliant if that were your they got it wrong and that were your first albums from listening to this at your wedding. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I I I start second guessing myself with uh There She Goes because it is obviously a brilliant song, but it's kind of in indie circles overplayed, and it starts to great and and also the more you listen to it, the more it sounds a little bit like cast. That's the thing, innit?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. And obviously, John Power, the bassist in the laws, he did go on to have quite a few hurts.

SPEAKER_00

Um you can hear him lurking in background.

SPEAKER_01

You've ruined it, you've ruined that song for me now.

SPEAKER_03

It's it does it does in places get a bit, yeah, a bit bit cast.

SPEAKER_00

Um and it yeah, it's it's very, very overplayed, but it's overplayed because it's really good. So I've then I've done that thing where I've taught myself around just time in a paragraph rather than a sentence.

SPEAKER_02

I think as well, if we were sat in a bar and Here Comes a Hot Step comes on, we might have a chuckle and do some impressions. I think if There She Goes came on, we might all find ourselves singing along. We might have a chuckle and do a few impressions. I think we would all definitely be doing officer and he can't had step by mood or uh well I we'd just be from tram lines actually.

SPEAKER_01

I saw a band called Thrill Collins who like basically does acoustic versions of all down and he played this and I did shout. School was a Mr. Officer, so yeah.

SPEAKER_00

How can you not? I you've actually made a you've you've got an own goal on your point there. Because I think if it came on in a pub and we're all there, I think we'd have more fun listening to that one. But if you're on your own, I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, maybe but a cup of coffee and you're thinking more fun counts for more than that. Actually, when that that first don't down down down down down. It's a really good round.

SPEAKER_00

I love this song. It's a big one. If I'm on my own, uh I'm listening to I Touch Myself.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, exactly. Thinking of more puns. Um I what has anyone ever been sad listening to Here Comes the Hot Stepper, though? But is it impossible? That's a good point.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know if you're gonna be able to do ever been banged up for being a lyrical gangster.

SPEAKER_01

I know, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Uh in it comes like we have to go there, she goes, realistically. Um, but yeah. Great, great.

SPEAKER_02

I think it's not here comes a hot stepper.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, he's done better in the semi than I thought, even though he's gone out. We have we've had a proper debate about what's better, and I think he's been a bit unlucky there. Uh the other semi-final, your woman versus drinking in LA. My favourite, and this is drinking in LA.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I'm I'm kind of expecting this is where your woman hinder falls short. But I obviously I'm intrigued to know what uh what Webding thinks, but I'm amazed it's kind of got that far, your woman. I'm I'm kind of quite happy if it loses, isn't it? But obviously, maybe maybe Webding will surprise me and go, your woman.

SPEAKER_00

They're both quite down the songs, aren't they? Um but I think drinking in LA is just you know it's sort of time-wasting vibe and things, it's just taking on a new poignancy for me by the fact I've just spent five minutes talking about uh Ine Komose versus uh Belaz. Yeah. So I feel like I'm living that one. So yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I I think it's a brilliant, brilliant song. It's one of those songs that I I am I'm amazed they didn't have another hit. I'm amazed that you can produce something like that and sort of it doesn't sound like a novelty song, does it?

SPEAKER_02

I mean, to be honest as well, like that's the one I I completely agree with uh the Lars and Cast. It'd be very hard if somebody said to you, I love that song, what what else is like it? I can't really tell you another song like drinking in LA. It's it's quite unique.

SPEAKER_01

And I think that the thing as well, if you if I said uh your woman, he never had a hit after that. I think even though you love it, Liam, you won't be like, Oh what really? I think you'd be like, Yeah, it's a bit sort of on it.

SPEAKER_02

I just kind of caught a melody. There's some slightly odd lyrics, and he just kind of captured a melody.

SPEAKER_01

And I think, yeah, I I wouldn't be surprised at all if like Bram Van3000 had gone on to be like outcast or something like that.

SPEAKER_02

Well, they could they I wouldn't be surprised if they had a hit now, although they'd probably be being in the 80s, wouldn't they? So maybe I would be slightly surprised.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe not now. Drinking what am I doing at 86?

SPEAKER_00

You know, you say there's nothing like him. I'm gonna spoil it for you now. Oh, and I'd be intrigued by this. In my head, in the likes of parallel universe almost, it's like there are good black-eyed peas.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, that's fucked it up.

SPEAKER_00

It's I don't it, but you can see where I'm coming from, can't you?

SPEAKER_01

You've got like a woman laying some vocals down, it's like a more depressing, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, you've got some other other fuckers rapping, and then yeah, it's a bit disjointed in terms of like everyone's kind of got their own bits that's stitched together. Like, I kind of see where you're doing.

SPEAKER_01

Well, I'll tell you what, that that's going through then. Drinking LA is gonna go through. We've we've gone for that. Final. We've we've we've basically ruined both the songs and the final for ourselves by mentioning cast and black eyed peas. But third place playoff, here comes the outstepper versus your woman. I think you'd probably go your woman because here comes the outstepper. He'd probably be in jail by now, won't he? No one gives a shit about third place playoff. Yeah, he'd be deported by now.

SPEAKER_02

So yeah, I'd like to see it on the podium, but I I don't think third place games should really happen. So I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Your woman. There she goes versus drinking in LA for the 90s one-it wonder final. It's a good final. It's a really good final. Uh English England versus America, obviously. Although Liverpool, obviously, Scouse not English, so Scouts versus America. Um of them's might be about heroin. There's there's rumours there she goes is about heroin. Yeah, I don't think it's rumors.

SPEAKER_02

I think it I think it is, isn't it?

SPEAKER_01

Uh he's denied it. Um Lee Lee Mavers, but this subversion that got into the top into the thing of a slightly remix, it's very similar to the original, but I think Drinking LA is a slight tweak with the re-release. Yeah, very slight tweak with a re-release, a bit of a remix sort of thing going on, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I'm I mean, for you know, obviously we've we've we've got to make a call, we've got to go one way or another. Uh There She Goes wins it for me. It it's close. I like drinking LA, I think it's it's really good. I wouldn't be too disappointed if you two want to go that way, but I'm I'm there she goes for me.

SPEAKER_01

What do you think you? Uh we'll tell you what, we'll make it interesting, we'll put our guests on the spot then, because I'm gonna go drinking in LA, so then you can like you absolutely this is what you want drama in the final, you want drama in your final.

SPEAKER_00

I I never ever ever thought um Ramvan 3000 when I again same same era as when I were like at Union and working part-time stacking shelves, listening to whatever LMFM were playing, yeah. Thinking, God, this is on all the time, isn't it? Uh and I never I never thought that fast forward sort of 25 years and I'd be put on the spot about it because I I didn't particularly you know it's almost like grown on me because it's it got too annoying. It's like you know, you talk about jokes that get funny and then get not funny again. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's done, it's done that with annoyance. Like, I've liked it, I've been annoyed by it, I've liked it. So I never thought this would be a final to be honest.

SPEAKER_01

They're still going, by the way. They reformed in 2006, well, for four years, and then yeah, they've been going since 2006. Like, well, 96 is when they started, but yeah, still still on tour.

SPEAKER_00

When did black-eyed peas sp split up? They're not they've not like pretended to be another band for a bit, I mean.

SPEAKER_01

Imagine that. Oh, that'd be yeah, yeah. But maybe then what age is that move with black eyed peas?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, true, true. Um, I'm just trying to deflect because I don't want to pick.

SPEAKER_02

Um I don't think I don't think there's a wrong answer for it's where I I'm not sure this is one where I think you kind of hardcore like indie fans, although I don't know if there she goes is a bit soft for some of them anyway, but I I'm not sure there's a right or wrong in this one. I'm happy for you to decide.

SPEAKER_00

Which I would before this would consider myself guitar music all the way, you know, it indie stuff's probably gonna win out for me when it goes head to head, but I'm gonna surprise surprise myself and go brand band 3000.

SPEAKER_01

When I think about you are surprised myself, yeah, um right. So I think that yeah, I think that's I don't think anyone will be sort of you won't be able to do that. I think it's a worthy winner.

SPEAKER_00

I don't think that's gonna stun too many people.

SPEAKER_01

No.

SPEAKER_00

If it's weird as well, because that's very end of the nineties. Lars very start, well, not even, it's actually 80s, so yeah, they they feel very different, but I think Bram Vance feels slightly more 90s to me.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I think I think it's a it's a worthy winner. Um yeah, I think that's a it's a bit again. I I like the both both the final songs are a bit sad, a bit nostalgic, even like how the way they sound and stuff like that. Um there's gonna be a lot of people I think shouting like, Where's Free From Desire? or other songs that aren't one it wonders that everyone thinks is one it wonders.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, we'll get loads of people saying how thick we are for not having ones that work behind the curtain.

SPEAKER_01

Um this group chat stuff because we're gonna hopefully get uh Mark's other other man, I'm gonna say. Um and he's in part of the group chat as we were talking about, and he arrogantly picked out all his favourites, didn't he, in this?

SPEAKER_00

He did. He he went in you you shared a document um for us for us all to peruse and he basically just went through it. So all all the groups that we've read out, he just went through it and highlighted the top two that he'd have picked in every single group. And unfortunately, I went and basically unhighlighted it, so we can't now see um what he went for. We also get him to do it again so we can uh yeah, slag him off when he's wrong, because obviously we're right.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, exactly that, exactly that. But we're getting him on soon anyway. Um but yeah, we're gonna get loads of people obviously shouting at us for not having songs that weren't when it wonders. Um and yeah, uh keep keep just keep yeah, just keep being wrong if you like. Um yeah, we're alright with that, aren't we?

Winner Revealed And How To Reach Us
