WHO REMEMBERS? The UK Nostalgia Podcast
A nostalgia trip for anyone in the UK who grew up on dial-up Internet, Findus Crispy Pancakes, and playground rumours that couldn’t be fact-checked online. We’re not historians — we don’t do dates, and we barely do facts — but science says reminiscing gives your brain a dopamine hit, so think of us as your weekly dose of hazy memories, childhood flashbacks, and confidently misremembered events.
Expect frequent arguments about who remembers things properly as we rummage through the UK’s collective memory box.

6 Famous Unsolved Mysteries From The Past — Explained
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
This week on Who Remembers?, we bring back a fan-favourite format from the old Living With Madeley days: unsolved mysteries, investigated (and solved) by two self proclaimed detectives.
We dig into some of history's strangest unexplained cases, including a time-travelling computer message, a vanishing pilot, "goblins" attacking a Kentucky farmhouse, a crewless Navy blimp, twins with eerie reincarnation memories, and a mysterious ancient manuscript that shouldn't exist.
Mysteries covered in this episode:
- The Dodleston Messages (1984) — A Cheshire teacher's BBC Micro computer allegedly received messages from a man living in the same house in 1546, and later from someone claiming to be from the year 2109.
- The Valentich UFO Disappearance (1978) — An Australian pilot vanishes after reporting a strange aircraft hovering above him, with no wreckage ever found.
- The Hopkinsville Goblins Encounter (1955) — Eleven witnesses in Kentucky report a night-long siege by small, bulletproof creatures.
- The Ghost Blimp Mystery (1942) — A US Navy blimp lands safely with no crew on board and no explanation for their disappearance.
- The Pollock Twins Reincarnation Case (1950s–60s) — Twin girls born after their sisters' deaths appear to recall memories, people, and objects from their sisters' lives.
- The Ura Linda Book Mystery — A 19th-century manuscript claiming to be an ancient Frisian chronicle, describing lost civilisations and a hidden version of European history.
Plus a bonus mystery solved mid-recording — the strange case of "The Man From Taured," the traveler who allegedly arrived in Tokyo with a passport from a country that doesn't exist......
Welcome And How We “Solve”
SPEAKER_00Hello and welcome to the UK Nostalgia Podcast. Who remembers? In this episode, we're asking: do you remember these mysteries? And are you looking forward to us definitely solving them? Here we go. Here we go, mate. The boys are back in town. We we love these ones, didn't we? When we used to do the Liver Mayley podcast, these were the ones I quite liked where we'd dig into a few mysteries. Um we definitely solve them. We do, as you can imagine, like not necessarily the most amount of research into them, but then we'd just figure them out.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we just figure them out. You don't need to do much research when you've got the the finest detectives in in uh South Yorkshire on the case. You do not need um to do any research. This is a request from Little Air who said you need to bring back these uh the the the mysteries from the maidly pod. And I thought, yeah, definitely. I mean it's not it's not really technically UK nostalgia, this, because a lot of them aren't from the UK, but it's it's all nostalgia. It's and you know, it's all they're all in the past.
SPEAKER_00It's we're yeah, we're we're alright. We're alright with that.
SPEAKER_01We're alright. So we've got three mysteries each, and we are good. I mean, I don't know what yours are, really. You've sent me the titles and a little brief thing, but obviously you you know, we neither has gone into detail about each, so there's gonna be a lot of the on the hoof sort of solving here. But if anyone's listening to the old ones, we we pretty much get it all right, don't we?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean uh I don't want to speak too soon, but I think we generally get there in the end.
SPEAKER_01Imagine if we got genuinely like got approached by like the CIA, MI5. I used to hate that. I don't know if I mentioned it on pod before. Remember the show MI5? No. What like a crime watch sort of thing? It was like a drama. Oh no, it weren't called MI5, it was spooks, but the uh the tagline the tagline was uh MI5, not nine to five. Yeah, it doesn't work at all. It doesn't work and he said it's such a like a MI5, not nine to five. As if like did he just oh anyway, none of that shit are you?
SPEAKER_00No, we're now just hardcore solving the mysteries, I think, is what you should expect today.
SPEAKER_01I'm
The Doddleston Time-Computer Messages
SPEAKER_01gonna kick off, Liam. And I'm gonna kick off with something called the Doddleston messages. Have you heard of this before uh today?
SPEAKER_00No, not until you sent me the your what you were gonna discuss. I mean, I like the name. It sounds if you're gonna write like a sort of funny name, something the the Doddleston messages, I like it.
SPEAKER_01It's like uh something on for Hetty Wayne, right or something in the Doddleston mystery.
SPEAKER_00It's like do you know when uh Rowan Atkinson does that thing where he's reading out a class register and the name of the state?
SPEAKER_01Doddleston.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you can imagine him saying Doddleston.
SPEAKER_01Doddleston, has anyone seen a Doddleston? Talking to it, my uh manager, he's sort of on top of this, and my old manager was called Ian Doddsley, so it's a little bit like Doddleston. And he used to go ghost hunting. I'd say ghost hunting, he used to go to those tours, those ghost tours, and he once said he goes, mate, I've seen shit that I cannot explain. And he once said that they were all holding hands in this um like sort of seance thing, and his mate were like putting his hand up and stuff, and he kept saying, Stop it, stop it, and he ran off crying. So there's what I'm saying is some of these things might not be solved like that.
SPEAKER_00We're surrounded by mysteries, basically, aren't we?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we're surrounded by them. Anyway, this one in 1984, Ken Webster, not not Kevin Webster. I might refer to him as Kevin Webster, actually. Imagine him. Hey Sal, you won't believe it. Uh anyway, he's an economics teacher from Cheshire, and he brought home a BBC microcomputer. Remember them? Who remembers BBC microcomputers?
SPEAKER_00Is that the famous like the the one that schools had back in the day? Yeah. Right.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah. Anyway, he brought one on this guy, Kevin Webster, and he's living with his partner Debbie uh in a place called Meadow Cottage, which is a centuries old house that they were renovating. Anyway, one evening Kevin Webster switches on his computer and he found that a file that he hadn't created appeared, and inside was a message, not in modern English, but in archaic English, and it simply said, I write on behalf of many what strange words you speak. So at first Kevin Webster thinks someone's playing a prank here or whatever, but anyway, he replied, and then to his surprise, another message appeared, and this time the writer addressed him by his name, Kevin Webster, um, and said, Who are you? and who is your like other half and all this sort of stuff. Basically, the first few exchanges were fragmented and repetitive, but over time they became longer and more coherent. And eventually the writer on the other end claimed to be a man um called Thomas Hardin, and he said he was living in the very same house as Kevin Webster and his wife, but this is the twist deal in the year 1546 and during the reign of one of the Henrys, which I don't know which one that'll be, one of the Henrys. Yeah. You know, the Kings, one of them lads. Anyway, Thomas says he wasn't a ghost, but if from his and from his point of view, he's very much alive. Instead, he said he could claim, he claimed that he could occasionally see strange things inside his home, sort of furniture that he shouldn't be there, walls that look different, and at times he even saw Kevin Webster himself. Imagine seeing Kevin Webster as a ghost, that'd be amazing, that wouldn't it? Haunted by Kevin Webster. Um but yeah, he used to see Kevin Webster as a ghost. And it's almost as if like these two time things were were overlapping. So as the conversations continued, Thomas um uh d described everyday life in Tudor England, talked about farming, politics, religious tensions, land disputes, and even like local disputes and stuff going around again uh around Doddleston. And people half after this came out have looked into this, and everything that he said was completely historically accurate, uh accurate, accurate. Everything that he said, like lined up with the facts. Anyway, after weeks of the conversation, something changed. A second writer appears, and this guy was not from the past. This guy was called 2109, and he claimed to be come on, Liam, finish it off for me. From the future. He's from the future, yeah. And he said he'd been monitoring the uh the messages between Kevin and and uh Thomas. By the way, his name's not Kevin Webster, it's Ken Webster, but I don't want people tuning halfway through if it's not even Webster, is it? Yeah, Ken Webster. Oh, was it Ken Webster? He just told me. Ken Webster, yeah. I've just changed it as a humorous prank. Um anyway, but these messages were much colder and more cryptic. He said, You are being observed, we are watching, we are guiding, we are correcting. Never could get and they at they they were asking the other two, you know, who are you, are you? They never give anything away. As the months passed, Thomas's messages became increasingly desperate. He said the village people had become suspicious of him and thought he was being communicated with demons. He said he was being watched, questions, and punished by the local authorities because of the messages. And one night he just said he was leaving Donaldstone forever and travelling to Bristol to begin a new life, very much like Roy Hodson did last season. Um, he said he thanked Kevin Webster for what he described as their strange um friendship across time, and that were it. Thomas never wrote again. But 2109 continued communicating for a while longer, and at one point he said that he would be contacted by somebody else 2109, which never actually happened, which is a bit of a weird bit in it, probably Tyrone. Um, but yeah, this never happened. And instead, 2109 eventually sent what would be his final message. He said the purpose of the communication would become clear in centuries to come, and right now, people in Kevin Webster's time were just not simply ready to understand it, and he ended with apparently a line that's still quoted today that says, You will sit in your chair and think of me, but you will not know. And then the messages stopped completely. And between 1984 and 1986, Kevin Webster exchanged more than 300 messages with these people. So I'm gonna just be before you go on to trying to solve this, Liam. Well, it's why it's obviously it's all that anyway.
SPEAKER_00Just for anyone slightly concerned at this point, by the way, I have not gone into as much detail in any of mine.
SPEAKER_01So no, this is the sorry, this is the longest one I've got as well. Sorry, this is the longest one I've got as well. Um what's made this case so difficult is obviously to explain is the technology involved. Yeah, BBC Micro wasn't connected to a modem, there's no internet connection, and software check said there would be no tampering or anything like that, and attempts to recreate it had failed. What happened, Liam?
SPEAKER_00I mean it doesn't work, does it? Because the guy says like furniture moves and he sometimes sees Webster walking about. But why where how is he communicating? What did did they ever ask him what device are you communicating with me on here? That's a good point though, Liam. That's an excellent point. Where's he got the technology? Is he writing stuff? Like is he got a magical notepad?
SPEAKER_01Why I I don't understand Unless he's speaking out loud and it's somehow going through the computer, somehow?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but then this is where you've kind of gotta get ridiculous with it. And why would the guy in the future to 2001 or whatever it is? What is he? 2109. 2109. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So he he can choose to communicate with anyone after that. So we've had iPhones, we've had tablets, and he's gone back for a BBC computer. It's it's it is a prank. It's someone who's got technology that they don't I I reckon like if I gave my dad a brand new sort of modern mobile phone I I could start sending him messages that he thinks are from the future. But but do you know what I mean? Like if you if you're if this technology is new, my my next door neighbour regularly tells me that she spent millions on a phone and stuff and that like because she just doesn't understand what's going on. This this is someone who thinks that because when he leaves the room and he presses the button that nobody else can turn his computer on and write a message to him.
SPEAKER_01This is I I I I'm gonna go against you a little bit here.
SPEAKER_00You don't think this is just a prank?
SPEAKER_01No, no, no, yeah, I think it's a prank, but I think it's a prank from Kevin Webster. I think it's the other way around. I think he is probably better at computers than a lot of people realised, and he's sort of somehow done this whole thing as like a prank.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, you might have you've charmed me.
SPEAKER_01Because I think I because obviously like computer experts at the time went in and said, like, you know, there's been no tampering or anything. Well they wouldn't have to be tampering because he's done it. If he's done it, then you know, and why does he only go and like sort of announce all this stuff once the messages had sort of were halfway going? You know, he's no one's gonna stick with Kevin Webster forever, so he could do that anytime.
SPEAKER_00I mean, you're to be fair, uh you've swayed me, definitely. But I but I do think if he's not doing it to himself, somebody in close proximity is pranking him.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, I think that's it. I think that's a mystery solved, you know. Years down, a lot of line people said it's an unsolved mystery. We've passed the challenge. Yeah, did we used to play that when we passed the challenge? I think we did use to play that, yeah. I'll just say maybe it's done. I'll just say we've passed the challenge. Oh, it's yours, Liam. Sorry, that was a long one, by the way. That's the longest one, but they've got a lot to get through because of the the third man that came in.
The Valentich UFO Disappearance
SPEAKER_00Right, so mine is the disappearance of Frederick Valentik or Valentich in 1978. He was a 20-year-old Australian pilot uh flying a Cessna 182L from uh an airport uh Moorabin airport to King Island. Uh he'd got 150 hours of flying experience, uh, he'd got night flying skills. Um he on this particular flight he radioed the Melbourne Flight Service to report a strange aircraft hovering above him around a thousand feet. He said the object was moving unusually fast and his engine was running rough. Moments later, he said it's not an aircraft, and 17 seconds uh of a metallic scraping noise were heard before there was radio silence. They never found any wreckage, they did lots of searches for it. The weather was clear, he had enough fuel, no other known aircraft in the area. Um some interesting points before his flight. So he he did have a thing about UFOs, and he told his girlfriend several days before the flight that he was worried about a UFO attacking him. Um he'd given two reasons for the flight. In one, he said he needed to pick up some friends, and another said he had to pick up some crayfish. Jake's a way off to. I'm just gonna go. And apparently neither of those were actually true, as far as anyone knows. Um a farmer later claims he saw him uh he saw a Cessna stuck to the side of a shigar-shaped UFO hovering over his field. I mean, that's just some sort of drunk farmer, isn't it? That's stuck to the side of a cigar-shaped UFO and it was hovering. But um investigation said undetermined presumed fatal. So they assumed he died, but they they don't quite. They never found him. Never found him. Never found him, never found the the plane. So I I think I've heard this mentioned on a podcast I listened to, so I think I have a solution to this. There's a couple actually, but I think I'm I think there's one I'm gonna lean with, but I have to hold my hands up. I I think I've heard it mentioned on something else, but I think it is right. So let's see what you think first.
SPEAKER_01He he he was into UFOs, weren't he? Like you say, he was scared of UFOs.
SPEAKER_00He was obviously aware of the phenomenon, yeah. It wasn't a guy who like you know never heard of a UFO and then all of a sudden said, God, there's a weird thing flying above me. He was aware of the concept of UFOs, yeah. Do you think he got spooked? And I mean I think it's a bit of a niche solution that if you kinda haven't heard of it, you you might struggle to get there.
SPEAKER_01But the fact so he thinks I'm gonna say he flew he flies upside down or whatever, he like just basically loses control.
SPEAKER_00You've got it, you've nailed it. So apparently apparently there's a phenomenon where if there's not much around you, I don't quite know how it happens. I don't know if it's almost like you know when you sort of have a microsecond of sleep when you're driving or what I'm not sure.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00But but it there are situations where a plane you end up upside down and you don't know. Which sounds mad.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I did I wasn't gonna say that, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That yeah. But he's looking for UFOs, he's taking his eye off the ball, aren't I?
SPEAKER_00So I don't know what and then obviously he's he's flying over water, I didn't mention that, but potentially it's it's a night flight, the lights of his own aircraft are reflected back in the water, and he's seeing this this thing affected by the waves, these lights jumping about, and he thinks there's something above him, and then it might explain why, kind of in panic, if he tries to get away from that, that he actually instead of going down, he goes up and he stalls it or he pulls in towards the water. Doesn't explain why they don't find the wreckage, but no, that's the I'm gonna say, isn't it? You know, I don't know the sort of the the ocean.
SPEAKER_01Well, you've seen his own own face, like his reflection, maybe in the water. Imagine doing that.
SPEAKER_00Imagine. How close do you think he was to it? Like he's hovering like a clearest water in the world.
SPEAKER_01Clearest water in the world. I'd look I'd just like that as an idea, like looking up and seeing your own face. Can you imagine that?
SPEAKER_00The last thing he saw was himself in the water, yeah. Oh, you imagine that. I I don't know. Uh to me, I mean, I I don't know if I'm mixing this up with another case. Though there was a there was something else I heard about and might what makes me think of this as potentially the same cases, because apparently he had had a couple of warnings for some sort of near misses and he was on a disciplinary for certain things, so there was quite a lot of pressure on this guy that I don't think it was kind of going as smoothly his flying career as he'd sort of told the people around him. So they're right, yeah. Potentially suicide, potentially. I mean, I I I don't personally think that is the answer, but if if I'm not mixing up two different cases of a very similar thing, apparently he's what he was sort of making out to the people around him wasn't necessarily true about how his career was.
SPEAKER_01How good are we going? Yeah, I think the two options here, realistically.
SPEAKER_00One, he's basically like you said, he's either like a micro sleep or something's happened, he's lost control of the plane, it is the the the lights or whatever off from his own plane or whatever, and then he's just basically lost control, shit himself, and died, or he has jumped out, or but then again, I the the fact that you can't find his body is not that unusual to me, to be honest, because I imagine that there's no I think in the ocean, like if the currents and things I I mean I d I I would imagine at some point it's 1978, the the plane might turn up at some point, it might give us more detail, but yeah, I I mean the other option is I I don't know back in the day, I I don't know how accurately they could track his flight. I don't know if he actually went the route that he told him he was going, and if he flew somewhere completely different and just wanted to get away from his life, but I I don't think it's that. I I think it's the upside down thing. I mean that could be a scraping sound as well, could be him and hitting the water almost.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, and seeing his own face.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, it's me.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, it's me. Yeah, another mystery solved there, Liam. Another mystery solved. Definitely. Yep, yeah, we've done it. Uh
The Hopkinsville “Goblins” Night
SPEAKER_01next one is the Kelly Hopskin Hopkinsville encounter. Have you heard this one, Liam? This is this is the one out of the three. I think it's the hardest to solve for me. Uh the one I've got. Uh, this is in 1955 in Kentucky. There were 11 people at a farmhouse just having dinner. One of the men, Billy Ray Taylor, not Billy Ray Cyrus, uh, went outside to get some water. When he came back, he said he'd seen a bright object fly across the sky. Everyone said, Ah, whatever, mate, yeah, not bothered. About an hour later, though, the family's dog started barking. Two men went to have a look, and they both claimed they saw this small creature walking towards the house. They said it had three or four uh three or four feet tail um with big eyes, long arms, and pointed ears. Thinking they were in danger, they grabbed a shotgun and a pistol, which I love that by the way. But you know, but imagine like shooting like aliens. Oh, get the shotgun. Get the shotgun, boy. Um, but according to them, the bullets didn't do anything, like bouncing off them, these bullets. And it said the creature just rotated, it rolled but rotated, rolled back and went back into the uh uh back into the dark. But then the family said these creatures started appearing around the house, some like some looking through the window, some on the roof, and every time they shot it disappeared, but then another one had turned up everywhere somewhere else. It's like Resident Evil, isn't it? You're like, oh my god, it's through the window. Eventually they all got in the cars and went to the local police station. This is 11 witnesses, by the way, adults and children, all telling the police the same story. The police went to the farmhouse, they found loads of shotgun shells and damage and house, you know, stuff stuff on fire and things, but they didn't find any creatures, no spaceships, no footprints, nothing. This county sheriff who took the the you know when the people came in and said, Oh no shit, we've been you know it's aliens. He said, These are not the sort of people who normally ran to the police, obviously you know, hillbilly boys, weren't they? So he said something frightened them, they were definitely frightened, but and it was something beyond their comprehension. What were you thinking, Liam?
SPEAKER_00So I made the mistake of using Copilot to try and get it to summarise your three four. Oh, you've cheated. Well no, because I didn't want it to figure them out. I just I just didn't know the stories and I wanted it to be a little bit more. Oh, sorry.
SPEAKER_01Oh right, yeah, I get ya. That's fine now.
SPEAKER_00But it did propose a solution which my first thought was raccoons. What fucking the cartoon show? Well, the animals that that show's based on, yeah. Um but I just see Burt Raccoon through your window. Would you give me a shotgun if Burt Raccoon came through your window? Oh, yeah, definitely. Just in his jumper and no pants, definitely. Um but apparently, like so Co-Pilot thinks, and I and I don't know if it kind of thought this on the spot or if this is a solution somebody's proposed, but um apparently great horned owls live in the area. Uh and they match some of the description that they said. So they have big eyes that would reflect light back at them. Uh they have long wings, which obviously, if they were flapping, could be perceived as long limbs. They move silently, they perch on the roofs, which apparently in the story they said that they were on the roofs and moving around. Um, they can swoop aggressively at people, so if if they were sort of feeling these things were moving around and intimidating them. Um again, I don't know if I don't know if Copilot's been sort of slightly stereotypical here, but it it assumes they'd be drunk.
SPEAKER_01If he's gonna say they were drunk, right. I watched the documentary about this because I wasn't sure because this is the one that I were like sort of I can't really work this one out. And it said like it's a massive stereotype to presume that they were just drunkards, you know. That is not necessarily the case. Yeah, this is a quite a religious, apparently they were really religious and conservative people, they weren't known for being drinkers, not saying they weren't drunk, but there weren't any sort of evidence that they would they would they were drunkards, they were like, get the Bible boy rather than you know what I mean, get the get the castle.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so I don't know. I I I I mean I I think again, what I will say is because these things sort of do you know if if we'd had like a hundred of these type of incidents, then you'd think, God, what the hell's going on there? This is not uh A three foot tailed alien that popped down to see these f this family.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, my point, yeah. My why why go to them just to scare 'em?
SPEAKER_00Just to say And then why yeah, never show up again, never be seen again. Yeah. So and again when they say you you say there's eleven eyewitnesses, well if I looked out of the window and I thought there was an alien on our sort of shed roof, we haven't got a shed anymore, but if I thought there's one in the garden, I I wouldn't say to the girls, give me my shotgun and come outside with me in the garden. Like you'd say, lock yourself in the bathroom upstairs because I don't know what the hell's gonna. So I I I don't believe the kids were out like watching them take pot shots at this thing.
SPEAKER_01But it's a different like it's a different lifestyle though. These are you're like I say, they are they are sort of like a lot of people.
SPEAKER_00But remember back then, like we've got no street lights, so it's very dark. There's probably very little light coming out of their house. It's pitch black, they're scared, they're full of adrenaline because they they've convinced themselves this little goblin thing. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I think you're heading the way I'm going, are you? Yeah, go on.
SPEAKER_00Well, I I just think it's I'm gonna say like mass animal of some kind, and I think that there's a genuine encounter where, at least to start with, uh you know, I don't know the sort of Ken Tucky and what's there, whether whether they've seen a mountain lion approaching from a funny angle, whether it is an owl, whether it is a raccoon, whether it's burnt raccoon. I think something has been walking down towards the house, they've seen it freaked out, Kevin Webster with his BBC computer, they've they've seen something that's triggered this like absolute panic in them, and and the has the senses are so heightened. I agree. It might be a raccoon and an owl and a mountain lion that they saw all around the house, yeah. And they've just gone into sheer panic. I mean, yeah, whatever this thing was, the fact that you know the bullets they're not bouncing off it, like that it the bullets would have hit it, presumably.
SPEAKER_01I'm trying to think, if you think about when you were younger, like say these are kids or whatever, and your dad had gone out, your your caravan in Chapel St. Leonard's, and he said, Oh my god, I've just seen an alien. Your dad with that panic, you'd be shitting yourself as well.
SPEAKER_00Well, and your mum would have been shitting herself. And here example of this. Um so I was once at bed one night, and I thought, there's someone in the garage. This is when I was living with my mum and dad. It's Joe Pasquale. But I could I could hear something, and I thought, no, that's that's ridiculous. And then I so I opened my my window, my I had a back room, and in the garage I I could hear someone moving about in the garage, and then it started like tapping and scratching. And this was about 2 am in the morning. So I went into mum and dad's room. I said, Look, I know it's middle of the night, there's somebody moving about in the garage, I can hear them. So dad said, Right, all right, we'll go. Yeah, my shotgun, boy. Shotgun and a pistol, boy. So we went outside and my dad kind of went up and opened a garage and I stood behind him, and we sort of I don't know if we had a torch or whatever. I don't I don't I don't know if I had any nunchuckers or anything like that with me, I'm not sure. But we kind of and you could hear some someone in there again. So as we sort of lifted it, we didn't know if someone's gonna run out or what was going on. There was a hedgehog sort of scratching at the door trying to get out. It must have gone in in this humble hedgehog.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So so this is how but but if we were in without tortures and and in the middle of nowhere and we were sort of panicked, you might have thought there was a creature in there, garage. I tell you now, boy. Yeah, I think there was a creature in the garage, but it was a it was a hedgehog.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah. I've told you before when there were an earthquake, so it's not it's not similar at all, but I may as well say it started, sort of so finish. When there were an earthquake in Sheffield, small earthquake, and I woke up and everything fell off my shelves. And for a good four or five hours, I was thinking that that has to be a poltergeist. I didn't even think of an earthquake, because like I think we mentioned it on Blair Witch project. And my my senses at that point were so heightened that every little noise would I can't put into words like how much, like, oh my god, what's that? Like just and I imagine they were exactly the same. They probably saw I don't know, but they like they kept coming and kept coming. It might have just been a branch at a tree, you know, against the window or something like that.
SPEAKER_00Well, even as we're recording this, I've I've gone across to Jody's mum's to see uh dog for a little bit while they're out and record, and it sort of bikes onto the field, and I'm I'm sort of peering at the bushes behind thinking, like, could somebody be watching me from there? So just sort of talking about these things kind of puts you on edge. So yeah, it does.
SPEAKER_01So how many times do you watch horror films or whatever, and then you can't sleep after, or ghost stories, and uh you you turn it off and you think, oh, what's the problem?
SPEAKER_00Well, I watched uh weapons not that long though, it freaked me out for ages. You're the weapon, mate, if anyone is. Certainly am. Yeah. Um right, you're your number two, Liam.
The Ghost Blimp With No Crew
SPEAKER_00So no my number two, um the Ghost Blimp. Uh it's 1942. So this is a US Navy blimp, uh, an L8, and it was uh August August 16th, took off from a place called Treasure Island, San Francisco, and it was doing an anti-submarine patrol. Uh and it had two experienced crewmen on board, so Lieutenant Ernest Dewitt Cody and OnSign, which I've I've never heard of that before, don't know what that means. On sign Charles Adams. Um they were both trained, competent, and very familiar with the aircraft. Um the blimp was seen flying normally for about two hours uh until it descended strangely, lost a lot of altitude, and drifted inland, and eventually gently bumped into Dally City, and so so gently that there was actually no damage to the craft or very minimal. Uh the engines were working fine, there was no issues with the radio, and no radio had been received from their flight. They had plenty of fuel. I suppose it's quite similar to my first one, actually. This even as I'm discussing it, I perhaps should have chosen something different, but here we are. But we can't go back. Like the bloom, you can't go back. The safety gear was intact, the life raft were still on board, the depth chargers were still on board, the cabin door was open, but crucially, both airmen had completely vanished. They were nowhere to be found. Never never found. Never seen again. Did no get an agenda. Ooh.
SPEAKER_01Have you got something for this?
SPEAKER_00The obvious thing to me is they just fell out, which I know sounds the most ridiculous, but surely that is all it can be, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01I was thinking one falls out, the other tries to help him. A bit like the lighthouse one we did actually in the in the maid league thing, where a bit like a Frank Spencer, you know, like series of unfortunate events where one gonna have the edge of the cliff and it goes out, the other one's gonna help, and then he goes down with him, like yeah, he's on the wing, like, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's that is the the first thing that comes into my head is.
SPEAKER_00What's unusual for for two experienced men to both fall out? And like you say, even if there are all having issues and one falls, or but for nothing to be radioed in, for the first two hours of the mission to seemingly be absolutely fine, it's weird that there's no evidence of any kind of a scuffle or a fight. And even if there was, it's it's unusual the fact that perhaps if one hadn't come back and the and the other one sort of said we had a fight, it was an accident, he ended up going out.
SPEAKER_01The the doors were actually designed in such a way that you know it's not like uh I'm just looking at it now, the design actually, as you mentioned.
SPEAKER_00It's not like you can just kind of accidentally lean on it and the door opens and everybody falls out. It's not like that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, it's weird. It's a weird one because again, it's 1942. This is this is the problem. When you say they were never found again.
SPEAKER_01They probably give up after a day, don't they?
SPEAKER_00Well, and it's not like now where you'd kind of say, Well, they will pop up at some point on social media or their bank cards are being used somewhere else, they just had enough, they were deserters. There's no evidence that they were unhappy in the army, they were both very, very good at what they did, they were both well respected, there was no disciplinary issues. Um I mean, obviously the I suppose the other thing is, you know, they are searching for German submarines, so there is a possibility they were captured. Yeah. But again, the fact that even if they went to investigate a submarine, they didn't radio anything in to suggest that that something suspicious. And why would they I don't know like what I suppose they do, but yeah. I mean that would like destroying the other thing. In theory, they go down to investigate a possible submarine, and it is a submarine, and a a German um give me your papers, yeah. Like a pilot of a blimp, show me your papers. But yeah, I I suppose possibly there's a guy stood on a submarine with a machine gun who says, You coming, you're coming with me, boy. Yeah, and you never hear anything again. But the fact I don't know, did you know if the blim I mean this could be absolutely pure coincidence, but the fact that the blimp returns undamaged not quite because initially when I read this, I thought that's weird, it's gone straight back to to kind of where it left without anybody piling it. It didn't directly, but it did go back to an American safe place and land really sort of nice and smoothly without anyone on board to do that. If it just drifted out to sea, if it had hit the water, that makes more sense. But the fact that it returned without anybody on board makes it a little bit more eerie. Yeah, it does definitely.
SPEAKER_01Could it I think I I think it's the the Frank Spencer theory. I think it's someone's maybe there's just something faulty in the blimp, and he's gone, oh what's this? Oh my do you know what I mean? Then he tried to save him. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00One of them accidentally put on some roller skates and like was rolling up and down and then something.
SPEAKER_01Doing splits in between a blimp.
SPEAKER_00Other one like opened the cupboard, but it turned out there was no floor in the cupboard, and he fell through the bottom of that. Last thing they heard were, ooh, bet I have done a whoopsie.
SPEAKER_01I think it is that. I think it's horrible.
SPEAKER_00I I know it's too experienced people, but if there's something faulty, uh it's like what so you don't think they've gone to investigate something, a submarine or something.
SPEAKER_01I think if that would have happened, I think they'd have destroyed the blimp for a start. I don't because uh why would they let it go back safer to America?
SPEAKER_00Well, yeah, that's that's I mean, I suppose the other thing, like, is this absolutely wrong?
SPEAKER_01I was into that theory until you said that.
SPEAKER_00If they landed it to investigate something, and then forgot that it obviously it's got helium in it, it will just float away. Imagine them watching it like this, another sort of Frank Spence thing, innit?
SPEAKER_01It's my Delboy and Rogers, bro. You forgot the baladi balloon.
unknownShh.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, the fact the fact that it then returns to sort of safety could could be just absolute pure coincidence. Maybe maybe they did just go down to look at something and they forgot to put on the the sort of the brake, so to speak. I presume there's some kind of weight or you have to tie it to something or because they never showed up again. Yeah, because they didn't show up again though. I mean, I suppose if I I don't know how far they travelled, if they were just out on a little island or even a little boy or something out at sea that they'd gone around to look at. Yeah, pretty much. Yeah, they might have just just never found them again. But I think so so are we saying they made a conscious choice to leave, but they didn't kind of do it properly, or are we saying actually we think the the comedy that not in a comedy we talk about? I think it's just an act, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I think I'd go for the comedy.
SPEAKER_00I think it's just a kind of calamity of somewhere. Yeah, I think there's probably something to help.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think one of them's like, yeah, another one's gone to hell. I think we had that with the lighthouse, I'm gonna say the lighthouse family lifted. But yeah, I think Yeah, it does work, yeah. Ocean drive. Um but yeah, I think um I think it's not I I mean it's a to this is a good one, this, to be fair, because there's multiple theories, and we'll never know. And I think there's like three or four theories there that could all be true, to be honest. I obviously the the the the I think The blink returning safely is the spanner in the works, isn't it?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, if that just floats away and is never seen again, you'd say, Oh, they got out, they didn't tie it down and it went. Yeah. So yeah, but but again, like pure could be pure freak of freak of nature. Freak of nature that winds blown the right direction. But again, it doesn't crash into anything, it lands nicely. But but then I suppose you can't there's no conspiracy to that because what what would be suggesting there that there was somebody on it. Yeah, and then they've yeah, could there have been a could have been a stowaway on board? Er no, I don't like that is odd that Liam.
SPEAKER_01That has that that I think this is the closest we'll probably get to all these, where I'm like, you know, but I am the seeker of truth and justice, very much like Mike Parray. I don't know if I can hand on heart. No, I don't know if we pass a challenge on that one.
SPEAKER_00I don't know if we have passed the challenge on that.
SPEAKER_01But at least we've, you know, we've got a few theories, like unlike these crap detectives, you know what I mean that have gone, oh yeah, it's probably. Well we've given the authorities a start, and we're giving them a heads up. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So that's that's good enough, yeah. My last
The Pollock Twins Reincarnation Claim
SPEAKER_01one is the Pollock twins. Have you heard of these, Liam? This I I read these out to my dad actually earlier.
SPEAKER_00There's another one. This is one I have heard of, yeah. I've I've heard of um a couple of cases like this, but I've definitely heard this one before.
SPEAKER_01It's a bit, yeah, it's odd. In the early 1950s, John and Florence Pollock lived in Hexham, which is in Northumberland. They had two daughters, Joanna, who were 11, and Jacqueline who were six. In 1957, should I say, um, they were both hit by a car, these two young girls, um, but driven by a woman who'd taken an overdose on a medication. So yeah, and both sisters died. The the loss obviously devastated the family. But John Pollock, the dad, somehow became convinced that his daughters had come back, he was going round saying, Yeah, they'll be back, they'll come back. Obviously, it's grief, you know what I mean? It's people say stuff like that. His his wife Florence was saying, Don't be daft, that's not happening. Um, but over a year later, she became pregnant, and John Pollock apparently told friends before the the you know the the pregnant the kids were born that they'd have twins. And guess what? They had twins, Jennifer and Jillian. Almost straight away there were things that people could not explain. So Jennifer was born with a birthmark on her forehead, which is exactly the same place where Jacqueline, the girl who died, had a scar from falling off a bike in that exact same place. She also had a birthmark on her hip, uh, which also matched the one which Jacqueline had. Uh the other girl didn't have anything, so forget about her. Um, but yeah, they they basically started doing things that so as they got older, they asked for toys that belonged to the two sisters who had died. These toys had been packed away in the attic, they shouldn't have known anything about them. They said, Oh, can I have that wooden top or whatever it was? You know, blah blah blah. When they brought them down, they knew exactly which toy belonged to which, and they played as Joanne and Jacqueline, the two girls who had died. They they knew the clothes and stuff, they said, Oh, yeah, that belongs to Jacqueline, doesn't it? And blah, blah, blah. They also claimed that they they they they recognised people that they'd never met before and called them by the name. So Jacqueline's old sit uh teacher and things like that.
SPEAKER_00What year we're talking here?
SPEAKER_0150s, 57. 50, right, okay. 50s, yeah. So like they go up to the teacher, oh Mr. Blah blah. And you're like, How'd you know that? Like everyone's like, Oh my god, it's mad. Uh but the biggest story, I suppose, is when they moved they moved in Hexham, when they were around four years old, they pointed at a school of playground and their old grandmother's house, who they'd never met, never seen because she she passed away, obviously never been to this school and stuff, and named them by you know the names that's the blah blah school, that's grandma blah blah's house, da da da da da da. And according to their parents, the minds were blown by this, they couldn't believe it. They also were out of fear of cars. Um, and one on one occasion, Jennifer had a cut on her head, and Jillian, the twin said, Um, you've got blood coming out of your eyes, that's where the car hit you, which were just a weird thing to say for a four-year-old. Psychiatrist Dr. Ian Stevenson um got involved with this, and he said it's the the strongest example he's ever come across of past life memories. As the twins got older, they've lost these memories, completely lost these memories. And apparently that's quite common according to this Ian Stevenson. You know, if you have past life memories, the older you get, the more you forget about them. Um but yeah, what do you think, Liam? Really? So we're talking a reincarnation thing here. That the well, how did they know this many things?
SPEAKER_00So I I've heard another sort of reincarnation story that I find slightly different. I've heard this understand hieroglyphics and stuff. That I I actually find this one fairly straightforward. I I don't know if you'll agree when I sort of propose it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean the reason I've picked this is because when I was looking at this list, there's so many this is almost on all of them, the Pollock twins. Like, or no one's ever.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah, no, no, I'm not sort of downplaying the mystery. I think it's a good one. I I just think it it's fairly easy to kind of unpick this particular. I think so.
SPEAKER_01This is why this is why we're top investigators, though. You know, I imagine the listeners are going, What where are they gonna go? Why are they gonna do this? I can't I don't understand. Explain it to us, please.
SPEAKER_00We will, this is what we're here for. This is what we're here for. So to me, obviously tragically, they've lost two daughters. They're naturally kind of gonna want to implant some of kind of what they lost on this this next two daughters. They're gonna talk and tell stories about their daughters, they're you know, they they're surrounded probably by memories of them, by toys of them, by people talking about them, you know, they they lost them under tragic circumstances, so I'm sure people want to comfort them and say, Oh, do you remember when they did that? Oh, do you remember this time we did that? I just think they're surrounded by stories of the sisters, and they and they picked up this this huge amount of information. I mean, it's things like they say they were taken to see the grandma or whoever it was, and and they knew who she was. But are you telling me en route there that when they said where are we going? Well, you'll find out when we get there. And yeah, and pictures. And also, I think it's it's that thing of I can give you a really good example of this, but I think after the event, when you remember back to something, you think, God, can you believe that they did that? Was I actually if if you thought about it at the time that no, they didn't do that. You said, God, isn't it funny how they looked at that? And then we kind of decided, God, it was almost like they knew that then became the new little little, yeah. I I think I I might have told this story before, but I think it's a perfect example of sort of misremembering something after the event. So there's a picture of me and my brother when we were, I don't know, say I'm four and he's two, and we're rolling on the carpet, and we've got like uh and I forgot I don't actually know if the guns are they're like just wooden things that look a bit like they might be bridges from something, but they look a bit like guns. And I'd once said to my brother when we looked at the picture, I look at us uh we're playing MacGyver. But I kind of meant it's as if we're playing MacGyver. We wouldn't have known what MacGyver was at our age, but then when my brother saw that picture years and years later, he said, Oh yeah, that's us playing MacGyver. And I said, No, I just said that. And and he was absolutely adamant. No, I remember playing MacGyver.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, one of us made Bert the the a few people who don't uh knitless to made like well, well one of us, this is an unsolved mystery, right? One of us uh made we had a guy who who were new, and every time we'd say, Oh, you're coming out for a drink, say yeah, yeah, yeah. Then about day before I said, I'm I'm not gonna make it. So one of us called him Burt Backoutrach, that became his nickname. You think it were yours, I think it were mine. Well, yeah, you say this, but now I'm gonna go back to the back.
SPEAKER_00I can back it up. I know where I was when it happened. I now back up saying it first, and I remember you laughing, saying Burt Backoutrach's brilliant.
SPEAKER_01Well, anyway, we're not getting that's not this is not the time for that. This is not the time to get into that, but it's again, it's a false memory, and false memories happen.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think it's a it's a multiple, it's a collection of things. It's in the moment them possibly knowing a bit more than the parents thought they would, because they've heard things, they've picked up on things, kids are sponges, they they know what's going on around them, they've heard stories, they've seen pictures, they've been told things by other people that the parent might not know. Then they might have said, Oh, you you really remind me of your sister, actually. I once took her to this place, and and and actually she looked just and as plain as the as playing as the kid.
SPEAKER_01There's a lot of things that I don't think when they say like, oh, they played with it, oh I want that toy. This is the 50s. They didn't say, 'Can I have the fucking new Nerf gun with you know A57?' Yeah, yeah, they were probably handing down toys anyway. Can I have the doll with the blonde airplane? Oh my god, you'll not believe that's your yeah, my my other you know, the daughter who died had a a blonde air.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I can't believe they picked that toy out of the two toys in the house.
SPEAKER_01Like being scared of cars, I imagine the the fucking parents were shit scared of cars.
SPEAKER_00Parents must have been terrified of letting the kids anywhere near cars, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so that's that don't mean the only thing, and it's probably a coincidence, is the birthmark things. That's the only thing I find really weird about this, isn't it?
SPEAKER_00But again, I I think if you actually examine that as everyone, it's not bad. I think there's a birthmark kinda near where it happened, but then actually, if you looked at the injury, you'd say, it's not actually anywhere near that, is it?
SPEAKER_01And as you say, really, realistically, that's what it is. It's probably not just the parents, but the family as well, feeding all this stuff into these two girls. And obviously, like you say, they they i i I can imagine they must have said something like, Oh, remember Mr. Brennan, the the teacher, he were great work, and they're hearing that, and then they meet Mr. Brennan. Oh, you Mr. Brennan? Oh my god, how did they know? Do you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's it, travel case, easy solved, straight in the bag, boom.
SPEAKER_00Okay, my final one. Um so this is uh it's probably the one I've researched the least in a way, because I wasn't gonna do it, but then I've taught myself into doing it. So this is I'm sorry, I'm just flicking back through my notes because Yeah, this is a big one, this, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01I think you were saying.
SPEAKER_00I think you were saying like this is uh Oh no, no, I'm sorry, I've I've changed from what I still might mention the other one to you.
SPEAKER_01Ah, sorry, sorry, carry on.
SPEAKER_00I've gone back. So so there's one. As I was researching it, I solved it.
SPEAKER_01Um I might just check whether you can solve it afterwards. Uh for professionals, that does happen, yeah.
SPEAKER_00But the one so so then after that happened, I kind of had to insert another one quickly. So this is what this is what I've done if I'm honest. I'm showing you behind the curtain. So yeah, because I'd already solved the other one, I didn't want to I didn't want to deprive.
SPEAKER_01So I've done that one, so I'm gonna do that.
SPEAKER_00So this
The Ura Linda Book Mystery
SPEAKER_00is a book called the Ura Linda book, which is described as the book that writes itself. So it's a manuscript surfaced in the 19th century, I think it was 1860, something like that, and it claimed to be an ancient Frisian chronicle, and it spans back thousands of years, it describes lost civilizations, matriarchal societies, floods, migrations, a whole different version of European and global history. Um it's widely considered a hoax, but I think particularly in more modern times when we hear that humans are actually a lot older than we realised, and there's there's this sort of younger dryer's theory that we were wiped out and that actually would there was a much more civilization before we realize, and so so there's there's reasons why it's kind of come back in more recently. Uh I mean it sort of sounds ridiculous, like you think, well but why would anyone believe this? But I think it as we start to realise that perhaps our sort of chronicle history doesn't uh go back far enough, it started to feed into more. I think obviously the the Germans leaned into it because it sort of proposes that the Frisians, which is the I think it's German if it's some Dutch and sort of up into Scandinavia, but that they were sort of the superior race for longer than than perhaps new.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, go on.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, yeah, I don't know that specifically, but certain certainly the sort of Germany leaned into it. Yeah. Um but yeah, I mean it it it sounds easy, like it's it's a bit ridiculous and it's slightly easy to resolve because it's kind of not real. But do you think the fact that almost like now people are saying well the the Bible's sort of the floods in the Bible, they're not a literal story about Noah and the floods potentially, but they are perhaps a recording of global flooding. That is there any possibility that this document kind of because apparently it was passed down through a respected family for generations from from something like 1256, they claimed. So it's which again they claim it's very hard to prove that, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01But is this not um look, I you know, don't say I mean it's so easy to solve this in a sense that it's no no no no no. What I'm saying is though is it that wide of a difference between this and the Bible in the sense that you're talking about handing down and people believing it and stuff like that? Well, I'm not saying, you know, could this have been the Bible in a different like an alternative universe, if you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's possibly a different kind of historical text.
SPEAKER_01I mean the fact that not the Bible, sorry, I mean sorry, it's uh sorry, I've made that like sound ridiculous. What I mean is like could it have been this this could have been its own religion, basically.
SPEAKER_00So so basically it it was described as a cross between uh the Bible, the kind of Atlantis theory of sort of lost cities and and continents that perhaps aren't there anymore, and also the the Silmarillion, which is the Lord of the Rings kind of fantasy novel. So it was kind of a mix of grandiose stories going back through history that that obviously like to to our kind of modern understanding of you know, that is it Gebekli Tepe that's like is that 11,000 years old that's that's clearly sort of shows we were slightly more advanced than we understood at the time. So I don't know, it's kind of hints that perhaps there's a documented version of history that goes back further than anybody's realised. I mean, to to me, even as I'm explaining it to you, I'm I'm kind of thinking it I think everybody's already solved this one. This is this is just uh it's a story, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01It's been it's an interesting one though, because of the advanced civilization thing, obviously the pyramids and all that sort of stuff. And well, then I'm saying, aren't they?
SPEAKER_00Which I I've been saying for a long well, not oh yeah, detectives we we've had our suspicions that the pyramids are a lot older and and we're building technology that we don't understand. We we've been on to this for a while, we've been on for this for yeah, a long time. And I've seen sort of more mainstream media is is sort of waking up to the fact that actually, do you know what we we don't know how they did this, but yeah. I love that thing as well, where they get like a perfectly flat field somewhere and they say, Look, look, this is how they did it, and they move one stone about like two metres and say, Yeah, all right, but how the fuck do you get that one up there like a thousand feet up in the air?
SPEAKER_01It's like that with dinosaurs and things like that. That obviously for years and years they got that. No, they've got I got it wrong, didn't get it wrong. You then they had the evidence and they they put it together for that. But obviously, that changes a you know a long time.
SPEAKER_00Potentially had feathers and things, aren't they? Some of them, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they I mean, yeah, I mean they did they had no idea how many they were. They had and then obviously as as they find more out, who knows, Liam, in two years' time, we might be sat here saying, Oh my god, that were right, that book. They found that many things that that book were right. But realistically, for the purpose of this podcast, we have to put it down. We start with a hoax, I think it's ending with a hoax.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, I don't necessarily know it's uh it's a hoax in a sense that I don't know if the people sort of using this documentation actually think it's fake. But obviously, I think at some point somebody's kind of written these fantastical stories and it's been pressed down with the stuff.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it should have gotten published.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Could have been making millions now. Live and learn, don't you? But yeah, so the mysterious city of Atlantis, by the way, what what's your feelings on that? Like, do you like that as a as a concept?
SPEAKER_00I mean again, I I don't think it's completely implausible that Well, I mean, like like I I think these things are becoming sort of more mainstream now. At one stage you'd have been considered a bit of a madman, but I think like they found sort of the Amazon rainforest, there's there's all sorts of civilization under that that we didn't know about that we're now founding. I think a lost city is perfectly plausible, yeah. I I I don't find that too ridiculous, particularly not if there was something where they'd found some sort of I don't know, some sort of woodworking joint or something that that we'd done so much earlier than we thought people were kind of capable of anything like that.
SPEAKER_01So And basically if you deny Atlantis, you're calling Plato uh yeah, Plato a liar.
SPEAKER_00So he heard it from someone else though, didn't he? He heard two different words.
SPEAKER_01Socrates, yeah, yeah. And it's a yeah, you heard one from Socrates and one from Alan Brazil, and we weren't sure which one to go with. The other only one I was gonna tell you by the way, which I I got rid of it because I it's pretty obvious, but it's quite interesting. Have you heard of the Philip experiment?
SPEAKER_00Uh Philip Schofield?
SPEAKER_01Is he no no no no? But what they did, they were a group of sceptics and they said, like, we we are gonna talk, we're gonna do a Ouija board and we're gonna try and get in touch with a ghost called Philip. Um I don't know what it's a long story, I can't be asked to go into it, but like basically they said, come on, Philip, come on, like they're all laughing. Then they did start moving around, and they all say none of them, like, you know, on the Ouija board, everyone said no, no, none of us did it. I think if if you take the word at it, it's just the power of suggestion, isn't it? A bit like the the story that I started with my uh boss, you know, with the holding the hands up. If you if someone says, Oh, this is I might put my hands up and then you go, Oh my oh, what's going on? It's just yeah. I think that's what that was, so I didn't I didn't go through with that one. What should what's the one you solved mid-case?
SPEAKER_00So this
The Man From Taured Unpicked
SPEAKER_00was called the the Torrid man, it's 1954. Uh a man allegedly arrived at Tokyo's Hanida airport with a passport from a country called Torred, Torrid, I don't know how you say it, nation that doesn't exist. I like how it says that in the notes. Um just in case you weren't sure. He insisted Torrid was a real country between France and Spain, but when he was shown a map, he was really confused and insistent that the map was wrong. He had a passport full of visa and stamps, he had documents from companies that seemingly weren't real, multiple different currencies on him, a hotel reservation at a place that had no record of him, uh, and apparently he was put in a guarded hotel room overnight, and in the morning he'd vanished leaving no trace.
SPEAKER_01Well, clearly time travel is my answer to the stuff.
SPEAKER_00Well, so people thought had he slipped from another dimension.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's what I mean. Yeah, he's gone from one time.
SPEAKER_00Had he had he come back to a a different timeline to one that he thought he had. Yeah, I this is Was he just mad?
SPEAKER_01But then but he did so I'm kind of show showing the way this is gonna go, but I I know that I've watched a documentary into this, I I think I know what you're gonna say.
SPEAKER_00Well according to the story, but but that's the point, according to the story. So so this is a well-told apparently mystery. But I straight away said, but this is this is just wrong. Like this, these can't be the facts. So I said to Copilot, I'm researching something for a podcast. This is what the story tells me. These things cannot be true. This seems to me like some a story that's been misremembered, that's been told multiple times and changed over time, and it basically said, Ah, yeah, yeah, you're right. This is probably based on, and there's a story apparently of something loosely memoring this that there was a guy found, he did have some dodgy papers with him, he didn't vanish overnight, he was actually locked up. Yeah, and and and just over kind of you know, it's the Chinese whispers of a time when social media wasn't available, probably wasn't tons of printed media. A story that's been told time and time again has just become more and more fantastical over time.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it adds it adds to that thing because he did get arrested. Like I remember I was like I say, when we were researching for this, I saw this, and he did get arrested, it didn't, it didn't disappear. Um it's just a cob man, weren't it?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, whether I I don't know whether it's a spy, whether it's a trickster or fraudster, but yeah, it's it's kind of based on I think I think the actual story was a little bit later. I can't find the specific bit where I took the notes for that now. But I think I think there was something, a guy turned up in Japan, might be 1965, maybe, but any anyway, the specifics don't really matter. I it it is probably based on a real story, yeah, but but it's just become over time, it's just been oh, here we go. Uh so it's not supported by contemporary 1950s documentation. Multiple fact-checking sources claim it's heavily heavily embellished urban legend, but built around a real case about a guy called John Alan K. Zegras, who was arrested in Tokyo sorry, 1959 to 1960 for identity fraud. He did have a fake passport. Uh he travelled internationally using fur forged documents, he was arrested and prosecuted for fraud and was sentenced to prison. He did not, I love this for clarification, he did not vanish from a garden guarded room.
SPEAKER_01No, yeah, that's it. That's the that's it, he's just a cold man. I like it, but like you say, it's it's like it's it's it's it's a mystery mixed with a myth.
SPEAKER_00I think the the bit people sort of latched onto was this sort of time travel alternate dimension that as he slips from the because if it's quite a nice bit, isn't it, that he's insistent that this country is here, but then when he's shown a map, he's like, What? What do you mean? That's not real. It's almost like but in his reality, there was a country there, and that is where he's would you ever pull that up?
SPEAKER_01Would you like how far through would you go through with that? If you were a con man, would you go, well, in my country, we you know, we drive we drive upside down on on in cars, what's going on? Like, would you like plea you know what I mean? Which how far would you take it?
SPEAKER_00You'd have to keep you'd have to stay sort of fairly grounded, wouldn't you? Like, I and I'm not sure anyone is buying that. Like what your cars drive the right way up. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_01I'd love that, they're so good. Like, like I don't know, they're just like what what are these? Like just picking like a pennel. What the hell is this? Who put this here? This is incredible. Yeah, I think um it would be a lot of things.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I think the the thing is with these, like I don't know if it's because there's a lot of a lot of people have done these, we've done some previously. I think we have we done one or two rounds of these. Two two two rounds, I think we've solved nine mysteries, pretty much, yeah. But I do think as as sort of it's so much easier these days to research and dig into these things, you find that actually a lot of it is just bullshit. I think it's as simple as that, Liam. I mean, yeah, don't get me wrong, there are obviously the AI has its limitations and we don't, I suppose. That's that's the difference, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, but it's not just that. I think it's like let's say it's there are mysterious cases that are really boring, you know, like what happened to you know when when they're quite common ones as well.
SPEAKER_00Like, have you had the Summerton Man?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the Summerton man, Jack the Ripper, the one you know what I mean, all that sort of stuff. But I'm not saying they're boring, but for a for a mystery. They've been done though, aren't they? Like I don't, yeah.
Listener Mysteries We’ll Investigate
SPEAKER_00Maybe we should take some of them on though, because I don't know if they've been solved.
SPEAKER_01I tell you what, genuinely, if you're if you're listening, um then please do send us some that you've j you are confused about. Could be something personal. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Could be something personal. Yeah, if you if something's happened to you and personal. I don't I well no, but how do I explain I can't explain that. I need the Who Remembers boys to to sort this out. Which is free of charge, isn't it? This what we've got for now, for now at least. For now, yeah, for now it's free of charge. If you've got any mysteries, you've always thought, what the hell happened there? We'll do it for you. There's only one of these these cases that we're we we'll still give multiple options out for you to to mull on yourselves. So I think we've passed the challenge.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we didn't solve the blimpy one. We should uh I'm not I can't be bothered, but we should pass the do you know uh how much I'd listen to the blimp thing. Flying through the sky, so fancy free. That that's what I would play if I was gonna play a clip.
SPEAKER_01But we're not gonna play that. But thank you, Liam, very much, and we will see you next time for for for more remembering, better remembering. Yeah, you certainly will do. Thank you
