WHO REMEMBERS? The UK Nostalgia Podcast
A nostalgia trip for anyone in the UK who grew up on dial-up Internet, Findus Crispy Pancakes, and playground rumours that couldn't be fact-checked online. We're not historians — we don't do dates, and we barely do facts — this is about the moment something gets mentioned and you go "oh my god, I've not thought about that in years." Science says reminiscing gives your brain a dopamine hit, so think of us as your weekly dose of that exact feeling.
Expect hazy memories, childhood flashbacks, confidently misremembered events, and frequent arguments about who remembers things properly as we rummage through the UK's collective memory box.

The World Cup of 80s One-Hit Wonders (With David Beeden)
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Following the success of our 90s one-hit wonder tournament, we're back with a knockout competition for the greatest one-hit wonders of the 1980s. Joined by returning guest David Beeden, we seed 32 songs into eight groups of four, applying a strict rule: one UK top-20 hit only, no other top-40 entries allowed.
The group stage throws up classic clashes between decade-defining tracks — 99 Red Balloons, Fast Car, Betty Davis Eyes, It's Raining Men, Turning Japanese, and Waiting for a Star to Fall all do battle for a place in the knockouts. Some big names crash out early, while a few surprise packages quietly build momentum through the rounds.
The tournament builds to a dramatic final between two very different contenders, with the hosts going back and forth before crowning a winner in one of the most unexpected results of the series so far — plus a mysterious late twist involving a friend's secret ballot that nobody can open.
Expect chart trivia, arguments over what actually counts as a "one-hit wonder," and plenty of 80s nightclub nostalgia along the way.

Welcome And The World Cup Setup
SPEAKER_02Hello and welcome to the UK Nostalgia Podcast. Who remembers? In this episode, it's another throwback to the World Cup. It's a World Cup of nineteen eighties one hit wonders. Here we go. More podcast royalty, Sheffield Podcast Royalty, but maybe global. I'm not sure how far you've you've reached out. But yeah, we're joined by Mr. David Bede and Dead Bat, as we'll likely be referred to throughout the chat. It was a bit of an aficionado, I would say, on uh music in general, but this is probably your era or the start of your era, Dead Bat.
SPEAKER_00Would you agree? Yeah, good evening. Thank you for the introduction. Uh, I'll let the criticism on the last part of me uh slide. Um, but uh yeah, 80s was the decade where I suppose it's not silly so I was first to wear a music, but I remember my older sister was really into like Michael Jackson and Madonna and Prince. She'd take the top 40 and sort of play it back in my dad's car. And it I don't know, it was kind of a magical era for me. And I suppose I I think it links all music really. Because you think about the 60s was like rock and roll, and then the there was punk and glam in the 70s, and then later on in the 90s was sort of the the Brit pop and the dance, and I think the 80s had a bit of everything. I know it sort of characterizes kind of new wave and sort of pop, but I I think it had so many different things to it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, completely. I think I mean it's like it is a little bit before our time, this uh mint man and liam, because you're a little bit older, but it's funny that that couple of years difference kind of to me makes the the 90s seem much more relevant than the eighties.
SPEAKER_02But yeah, no, I do particularly like modern music that the 80s feels like the 70s a little bit, but the 80s kind of inspired everything that came afterwards, it feels like.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and I I think for me, and we will get on to it, I think there were more choices in this in the 80s one-it-wonders than there were in the nineties. I'm not saying the better, obviously people decide that as we go. There would definitely seem to be more 1-8 wonders in the 80s. We had a list of about 50, didn't we? Do you want to take us through about some honourable mentions that didn't
Guest Joins And 80s Music Case
SPEAKER_04quite make the list?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so we there were um some that didn't make the cut, and I think we decided they were either a bit too gimmicky or perhaps not as good as the ones we we we put in. So there was Baltimore, Tarzan Boy, anyone can fall in love, Anita Dobson, Da Da Da, Trio, Laurie Anderson, Oh Superman. There was an Alexis Sale hit as well. Got a new motor since yesterday, strawberry switchblade. There was Money, Flying Lizards, Feels Like Heaven, Fiction Factory, Love is a Wonderful Colour, the Icle Works. Um, one that I wanted in but got overruled first picture of you by the the Lotus Eaters. I have to do it. There was a few others, yeah. It's a great song and should have been in. I should get that in early. But I think we we had a bit of a chat. Webding was involved in some of the chat, wasn't he? Which we did before the 90s one, just to kind of finalise the list. Uh but there's also a few that we didn't put in that we just debated this before we came on air. That um because of your you have a ruling, don't you?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so if anyone didn't listen to the 90s one, the rule is you they they have to have had obviously one hit, which I class as a top 20 hit. That is what I class as a hit personally. But you're not allowed in this this uh World Cup if you've had another one in the top 40. So there's a lot of people shouting in, you know, um Ange, for instance, gave us about five or six different ones that had already hit for the 90s. Liam, you're you're not happy about this, are you?
SPEAKER_02I mean, I'm not furious. I I'm I'm willing to I'm I'm willing to keep recording, but I think the particularly the the one which I didn't really know really well, but I'm in love with the German film The Passions Star. I I think that's better than some of the ones we've rolled out, and that didn't make the top 20, so it it doesn't feature. I I thought the stipulation was one top 40 hit in the 80s and no other top 40 hits any other time. But to be fair, the fact that I I think it sums up the podcast, you've not you've kind of gone for elite, you've not you've not accepted mediocre mediocre.
SPEAKER_03No, we're never going for elite. Like you said, the other one.
SPEAKER_02Well, that's why we've got deadbot on, you know. We could have any old guest on, but you know, we we strive for the best, don't we?
SPEAKER_04So is it and obviously there's some people here again as last week, they're gonna they're gonna be shouting in. And by the way, you talked about Anita Dobson. When I saw Anita Dobson and well, I actually thought of that. I thought, oh yeah, Anita Dobson's had a one it wasn't there. I got so excited thinking Nick Berry could be in here, you know, where every loser wins. He had another it fucking heartbeat got in there though, didn't it? That were his other one. So he's had two, but Nick Berry's obviously missed out, Katrina and the waves.
SPEAKER_02Um, yeah, I mean if you if you're shouting at your sort of podcast listing device already that we've we've not we're not gonna include this one or that one. That there has been some research, it's not you know, as as we do, it's not it's not extensive, we've not sent every minute of every day, but well hang on, hang on a minute.
SPEAKER_00Can I just say uh uh it was only last Saturday night I was in a 80s nightclub in Seville, uh Spain, but research him live researching and having back and forth with the DJ. If that's not you know preparing for it for a professionally for a for a remembering podcast, I don't know what it is.
SPEAKER_02Well, and if you ever want to put Tusty Club behind a paywall, some of the footage that we received on the group chart would be worthy of uh paywall.
SPEAKER_04Absolutely, yeah. Right, let's get on to this because I think this I with the 90s one, there were three or four, and I thought, yeah, they're gonna get quite four. I'm absolutely I don't know what anyone's gonna go for. Right, we'll still anyway. It's the old fashioned group again, 32 teams, top two go through. We'll start with group A dead, but if you want to read out what was in it.
SPEAKER_00So we've got Arthur's Theme, which is by Christopher Cross, number seven in 1981, Rhythm of the Night, Debaj or Debage, number three in 1985, Echo Beach, which is Martha and the Muffins, number 10 in 1980, and Time Warp, Damien, number seven in 1989.
SPEAKER_04I think the most controversial one people might say is Christopher Cross, because he had loads of hits in America, but he did only have and it Arthur Steve was obviously off of the film Arthur, which I've not seen, Dudley Moore. Um, but it's uh go on, what's the chorus?
SPEAKER_03If you get called it, yeah, that's it, exactly.
SPEAKER_04Like wrote by Bert Backhout rack as well. Um that's the only bit because this were he had a lot of billboard top 100 uh songs, but only one hit in here. What we're thinking for this group straight off the off the bat.
SPEAKER_02I think if if Deadback reads him out, he he gets to sort of set the tone. I think you give us your your thoughts.
SPEAKER_00I mean, at first I didn't even know who Chris Cross was. I thought it's Chris Cross from the 90s.
SPEAKER_02Chris Cross will make you a very different thing.
SPEAKER_00Um Salem, the famous one that got number one in America and didn't even chart in Britain. Um, and then I listen, I thought, yeah, I really like that song. I think it's a bit cheesy, but I I quite like that song. Quite a nice comedy, yeah. Yeah, rhythm of the night, same sort of thing. Not to be confused with the Corona song. No, no, happy little ditty as well. So forget about the worries on your mind. Uh Meltown, isn't it? One of Meltown's. Which is ironic because apparently they all got abused by sexually abused by their dad. Two are dead, two having curable disease, and one is in prison. Alright, that's a nice five. It's a nice story to kick off group, mate. Yeah. Um I I don't know, I think those two might be the two for me. Um, I think
The One-Hit Wonder Rule Debate
SPEAKER_00you two are gonna go for Echo Beach, but I'm not a massive, massive fan of that song. I know it was covered covered by Toyo Wilcox, wasn't it? Uh late later on. And uh I don't know, I I'm not I'm not huge by that. I'm gonna rule out straight away, time warp. Um board.
SPEAKER_03Well, even written by Richard O'Brien though.
SPEAKER_00Like the fuck's beginning. I've got a story because I went to watch the Rocky Horror Picture Show with my sister. I was 18 and she lived in London. She dragged me along, and Richard O'Brien uh starred in it. Um, and they basically asked if anyone had ever seen it before, any Rocky Horror Picture Show Virgins. And my sister made me stand up and I had to do the dance. Oh no. It was absolutely humiliating. There were others doing it, like in the you know, in the sort of uh in the in the stand. And you were wearing the sort of full leather outfit as well, weren't you? Yeah, yeah, it was absolutely humiliating.
SPEAKER_04I can see why you don't want this to go through. This is a cover song as well, to be fair, because it's not the origin Damien um who did it with the original, didn't it? I think that goes in it as well.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, in a world of novelty songs, that is the most novelty of novelty songs, I think. But I really don't like it. And funnily enough, so the way I've done this, Hague, don't know how you've done it. Yeah. The last one I kind of had my favourite two. This time, I for my own notes, I have got a one and two, and actually I agree with the two dead bats chosen. Yeah, I agree. Mind the order too much, but my number one is rhythm of the night for this particular mine would be Arthur's theme, so what are you going for the group winner, dead bat?
SPEAKER_00Um, I'd probably I had Arthur's theme as as number one and rhythm of the night number number number two.
SPEAKER_04So rhythm of the night goes for yeah.
SPEAKER_02So Liam, group B. So fast card, Tracy Chapman, and I'm not gonna sort of make comment on every one until we get to the debate, but just for everyone shouting now, you can't have Tracy Chapman. This was her only UK hit.
SPEAKER_04So I had a massive row with someone on a an away coach to um I don't know where it were, actually, United Chef United. And um they were good because I was I just mentioned because oh that's quite a weird fact that you know she's only had one. And he goes, No, she hasn't, no, she hasn't. And I go, no, no, she has, she has. We had a big row about it, and she has only had one top 40 hit.
SPEAKER_00Can I just stop you? My group B, I had different songs that you sent me out. I don't want to work jumping too early. Oh sorry, yeah, I've I've jumped into group C.
SPEAKER_03You group you've got you've nicked my group. I didn't realise I was too busy talking about my Tracy Chapman thing. Tracy Chapman's my group. Get you get in your own group.
SPEAKER_01Infantino's or hand yeah spoiler.
SPEAKER_04It's not change the groups, change the groups. Right, Liam, group, give us a real group B then, please.
SPEAKER_02I got a phone call from Janny saying fast car, it should be in every group. Uh sorry, yeah, that's that's uh really weird on this podcast. It's that we've made a mistake, but yeah, I'll I'll go with it. So number one is 99 Red Balloons by Naina. Um that number one actually in 1984. The second track we've got in there is last night at DJ Saved My Life in Deep, and it got to number 13 in 1983. We've got Mickey by Tony Basil or Basil uh in number two in 1982, The Way It Is by Bruce Hornsby and The Range, and that's a number 15 in 1986. It's a it's a decent group, I think. I think it's I I mean again if if I'm reading now I'll I'll start the ball rolling. I love 99 red balloons, but but purely for sort of nostalgia of lead mill Wednesday nights, the Sheffield club that used to release red balloons, I don't know if they were 99, but they used to release them down. Uh it was a kind of a trick that you could sort of use to get in there with the ladies if you could get them a red balloon. They all wanted a red balloon, so it's about bloody cold balls, it's about like neutral.
SPEAKER_00It sounds like they did the same in every club because I used to go to the Republic bubble gum on a Friday night and they released balloons in in that as well.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's with 99 red balloons. I mean, it is like it is a genuine war song. Like, I mean it the German version is not quite as explicit because what is it?
SPEAKER_02Nur Nerf, I never know. Love Balloons. Love Ballons.
SPEAKER_04The German version actually got to number two in America, but for some reason they re-released it in English um
Group Stage Begins And Early Picks
SPEAKER_04for for for us because we're obviously too thick to understand any sort of German. And uh we got to number one. There's three, but I think Mickey goes out here. I don't know about you, Deb, but yeah, Micke Mickey's terrible.
SPEAKER_0299 Red Balloons, I like, but it only because it reminds me of good times in nightclubs. I don't think it's a particularly good song. For me, there's last night at DJ Say My Life, I think it's genuinely very good, and the way it is, which I think it's one of those you forget about, and then you hear it again, think actually that's a great song. They're my top two. I don't mind the order.
SPEAKER_00I don't I I could be persuaded on 99 red balloons, but as it stands, I had red balloons just because of the sheer nostalgia and everything you said. I'm not saying it's necessarily going to win it. Um I had what the way it is, Bruce Horsby is my number number one.
SPEAKER_04I think it's I I've got the way it is is number one, to be fair.
SPEAKER_00You think a grandstand? It used to be a good one.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it does, yeah, with a play and moving to the top of the table.
SPEAKER_00Football focus. Yeah, I think the way the way it is, does it not always say?
SPEAKER_02No, yeah, it's just the way it is. Yeah, but that's just the way why is it not called that's just the way it is?
SPEAKER_03I don't think it's gonna never be the same.
SPEAKER_04Let's not dwell too much on that. I think that might go a bit you might go deep into the tournament. So the way it is goes through, and now we're arguing between 99 red balloons and last night of DJ saved my life.
SPEAKER_02I think it's your choice, Roy. I think I'm happy with a different one. Happy with either, but personally, last night of DJ.
SPEAKER_04I'm gonna go and Mal Money Meek and I sent these two, he's one of his favourites last night a DJ saved my life. But I'm gonna have to go for the nostalgia. I'm gonna have to go for 99 red balloons um to go through to the I think it could go out first round.
SPEAKER_00It's uh iconic. If you think of eight is one hit wonder, yeah. If you went did a family fortunes and you asked hundred people, I think that'd be high.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think that's and that's a good that's a good case. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Um I think that's a close that's a tough group though, that, because there's one shit one and then you know the other. Anyway, group C Fastcore, we've already mentioned Tracy Chapman, uh, number four in 1988, pump up the volume by Mars, number one in 1987. I can't wait, new shoes, number two in 1986, and move closer by Phyllis Phyllis Nelson, number one in 1985. I think fastcall is the winner for me. I'll have to give you my two. I think fast core and pump up the volume for me are my two.
SPEAKER_00Um yeah, I don't disagree. I I I was close between Pump Up the Volume and I can't wait. Uh I do like the opening to that. It's sort of a mix of rap and dance and pop, and it's got a bit of everything in it, but uh Pump Up the Volume I didn't like at the time, but like I've listed it back and I've thought, yeah, I can see why it because it got to yeah, it got to num number one, but yeah, fast car's definitely the standout in this group. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02You say the same, Liam. Yeah, fast car number one. Uh it's the first time so far tonight I've not picked a number two. I I don't really like any of the other three, so I I'm I'm happy, I'm happy to go with the flow on that one. I if if forced to choose probably I can't wait, but I can't make a real strong case for it.
SPEAKER_04I would go for what what you going for your number two then?
SPEAKER_00Uh Debat. Pump up the volume. No, I went I I think Kai initially I went for I can't wait. Oh, I can't wait, okay. We could put that through. I'm happy with that. I think it'll get criticized. I think a lot will think pump up the volume should have should have gone through.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it makes us look very, very uncool. First ever like sort of house number something. We've got I can't wait. We can't wait, goes through it's a double. We're sending it through as a lamp to the slaughter though, aren't we?
SPEAKER_02I don't I don't see I can't wait getting very far, but but well done. Well done.
SPEAKER_04You never know, you never know. Group D Deba. This for me is the group of dance.
SPEAKER_00Group D the safety dance men without hats, number six in 1983. Number two, waiting for a star to fall, boy meets girl, which is number nine in 1988. Uh theme from MASH, um number one, is the MASH. That's what they classed it as, yeah. They as the MASH. I knew it for the different name, Johnny Mendel or whatever you were called, but yeah, part of the initial yeah, 80. And then Betty Davis Eyes, Kim Carnes or Carnes in number 10 in 1981. And I think I agree with uh what you two have just said. I think this is a very, very strong group. Um I've got one I can rule out.
SPEAKER_02Do you have a big one?
SPEAKER_00I would dump, I would probably dump the mash song, but I might be on my own on this. I don't think Andrew might like that, but I would agree.
SPEAKER_04No, I no, out of the out of the four, it would be bottomed. What I do like about the mash song is it were written by a 14-year-old. You think you'd have like sort of if your 14-year-old were going, Sue is sad, it's pain, you think it's whoa, what's going on?
SPEAKER_00You'd have a chat, wouldn't you, about that? It was covered by the Manics, and I'd argue that for the better version, actually.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I think the Manics version, that's why I would have knocked you out. I think the Manics version is better. There's a great line in it where it says that the game of life is hard to play. I'm gonna lose it anyway.
SPEAKER_00To write it by a 14-year-old, it's a crazy thing to it makes me think of my dad, because I never really watched MASH. I know people are a big fan of it. Yeah, my dad loves MASH, yeah. I could hear the theme tune from Dave Says on TV when I was in kid in the bed, and I suppose it should be happy memories, but uh yeah, I think that's the one that the other three though, they're all incredible. I could make arguments. I I pro my number one would probably be waiting for a starter fall.
SPEAKER_04Um yeah, I'm with you. I am with you that I'll yeah, I I do think that's my favourite about you, Louis.
SPEAKER_00It was wrote after they witnessed a falling star at a Whitney Houston concert.
SPEAKER_03They wrote songs, didn't they? They wrote Um I Wanna Dance With Somebody.
SPEAKER_02That was after they wanted to dance with somebody somewhere, wasn't it?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, exactly. Yeah, uh what was the other one they wrote? Um I will I know if she really loves me.
SPEAKER_00But they offered it to Houston and she rejected it, as did Belinda Carlyle. But yeah, I just think it's a really positive, uplifting song, and it's it comes on and instantly it just catches you. So that would be my number one. What are you thinking, Liam?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, oh yeah, sorry, just for number one, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, I'm more than happy. I I think the real debate now is is the other two. That that's uh I I'm I'm struggling. I don't know. I like both. I am I really like both as well. It's not like my preference probably probably would be Betty Davis' eyes.
SPEAKER_00I again I just like the opening sort of jangle and the hair is hollow gold. It's just uh just I think she's got a great voice. I think the vocals are fantastic.
SPEAKER_04I really like it sort of like husky voice. The only thing I'll put it I love it, I love it as a song. Really, really, really love it. It's interesting by the way, we put this through Milo did a song. I don't know if you remember under the oh no it went under pressure. I can't remember what it was and he mixed those two songs Betty Davis Eyes and Waiting for a Star to Force really good song. Um the only thing is it is a cover song. I don't know if that goes against it.
SPEAKER_02I don't know if that like sort of I think it probably is a technically a better song, but I think I would rather listen to if if I'm taking some songs to Desert Island, I think the safety dance just has something about it. It's uh it's a bit of an uplifter. I I think I could she doesn't stop moving for long enough, the girl dancing in the video. I'm not sure if that's some sort of Avril Levine clone that's dancing around around him, but yeah, I don't know. It's crazy the video, isn't it? It's it's a bit mad, but but in a kind of really likable 80s, sort of this is when you could still do this sort of mad shit and get away with it.
SPEAKER_04But I I think I prefer uh Betty Davis Eyes, but I'm happy to put safety dance through because I think it sort of sums up this tournament better than Betty Davis Eyes, if you get what I mean. Betty Davis Eyes is a cover song from the 70s, Jackie DeShannon or whatever she's called. Um and I think the safety dance is pure haters.
SPEAKER_02These are three of my favourites so far, and they're a number six, a number nine, and number ten. They're not like sort of top two, top three. I think that blew my mind a little bit. The chart positions.
SPEAKER_04Are we okay putting the safety dance through one? I think so, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm happy with that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that is a tough group, though. That one I've got to admit. Liam, number E, Group E is not a tough group.
SPEAKER_02No, uh well, we'll we'll see when we get to it. But Lombarder by Coma, number four in 1989. Uh, somebody's watching me by Rockwell, number six in 1984, Turning Japanese by the Vapors, number three in 1980, and All Out of Love by Air Supply, number 11, in 1980. So to me, the the clear best song in the group is the worst chart position. I think All Out of Love by Air Supplement is a brilliant ballad. I guess it's it's a bit cheesy. Who covered that recently? I'm sure that's someone so nice without you. I I don't know, but yeah, it's great.
SPEAKER_04I think my favourite I'm happy to have that number. I think my favourite is probably turning Japanese, to be fair. I think the Vapors are a decent band. This doesn't sum them up that well at all. Well, yeah, I'm gonna disagree.
SPEAKER_02I think we've generally been in alignment so yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. What do you mean, Devontable? For me, would not go through, so I'd be just watching Deadbats top two.
SPEAKER_00I think I'd get rid of Lombarda straight away. I think that's in the same category. It's sort of Macarena type song for me.
SPEAKER_04It reminds me a little bit of Italianitari, because obviously Italian night with a year after, and I remember like a lot of clips and stuff. Because I watch all those old clips of Grandson. They used to play this Roger Miller, yeah, doing all yeah, yeah. Um so yeah, so it's uh yeah, it's a tough one though. What are you thinking?
SPEAKER_00I I don't know. I I quite like the Rockwell song, and I I was always convinced it was a Michael Jackson song. Yeah, I did like years later, it sort of blew my mind when they said uh the song there on the uh by Rockwell. I thought, what?
SPEAKER_02I thought it was a young Jacko, definitely.
SPEAKER_00But apparently he he guested on it.
SPEAKER_04There was a couple of the Wacko boys on it, him and Jermaine uh were were on it, but um yeah, I was I was just amazed it was uh it it was it was not but Rockwell didn't tell Mowtown, the record label that Jackson was on it because he wanted to prove because he's sort he's the son, in he, of Berry Gordo, the the founder of Mowtown, and he wanted to say like I can do it on my own, so he didn't want to say like Jackson had been involved, and um yeah, and it it was a massive one.
SPEAKER_02I I have a little bit of bias because me and my brother got uh a Kellogg's tape out of I don't know if it came out of the serial or if they had to send off for it, but somebody's watching me was was on that tape, so it's a really early tape we had, and yeah, for that reason it kind of carries that little bit of nostalgic weight for me. Me, so all out of love and somebody's watching me would be my two.
SPEAKER_00I would have I would have sent to I this is might be the first sort of turn up, but I would have had all out of love in in third for for me. I I I genuinely would have put turning Japanese through, which is again a bit gimmicky, but it's just different. Um, and I'd have had somebody's watching me, but as I say, I'll go with it.
SPEAKER_04We're all out, yeah. I mean, Liam, it's your group, so you get the final say because we are no no, I don't think it works like that.
SPEAKER_02I think if we are torn, we we kind of vaguely agreed on the last one. Well, to be fair, I've gone to it.
SPEAKER_04I've gone turning Japanese and all out of love as one-two. Dead bat's gone, someone watching me and turning Japanese as a one-two, and Liam's gone all out of love and so I think in a stalemate chart.
SPEAKER_02Somebody's watching me, should be comes into it, so all out of love probably slips out. I'm disappointed to see it go, but I think if it is a stalemate, that has to factor in.
SPEAKER_04Does somebody watching me? Because with this the only one that we all pick to go through, does that win the group?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I suppose so. If that's on everybody's list, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and then turning Japanese comes, yeah. So that's it. Yeah, that is a shock. I did think that'd get through actually. Um, all that.
SPEAKER_02I mean, for what it's worth, I think turning Japanese is a ridiculous song.
SPEAKER_04It's about uh masturbation, isn't it? Everyone says.
SPEAKER_02Um well that makes it that makes it seem much more sort of credible.
SPEAKER_00There's a there's a bit in the middle that's incredible where he just starts talking away from the chorus. He says, No sex, no drugs, no wine, no women. No wine, no women, no men too. It goes on, everyone avoids me like I'm a sight lone ranger. Everyone, that's why I'm turning Japanese.
SPEAKER_04No one's ever actually said really, he's always denied it's about masturbation, the singer. Um, but they've never actually said what it's about. Do you remember when we were in Sainsbury's lib and I just started singing it and you were laughing your head off when we went to work at that other store?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we had to go and work at the mall for a bit in town, and we've got sent you away for racism. Yeah, yeah. I think they wanted to show some of the other stores like the pinnacle of Sainsbury's, so they sent us down there. And you know, I went to do a bale where you sort of bundle up the cardboard, and uh a guy, in my mind, he were cornish. I don't know why he would be, but he said, Here, you don't touch that bailer, he does the bales round here, pointed to like some other guy. So me and Age were stood really awkwardly, just sort of like, do you know when you're sort of like just whistling to yourself, like we're all a bit weird, and really quietly under his breath, uh Roy Andrew just started singing, turning Japanese. I think I'm turning it. I don't know why. So we were a really awkward scene.
SPEAKER_04This guy were really like sort of angry that we touched his bale. And I turn in Japanese. I don't know the first thing that came into my head, but anyway, it's gone through.
SPEAKER_02Anyway, it's gone through, yeah, it's made it.
SPEAKER_04Group challenge is a shocker of a
Strong Groups And Surprise Eliminations
SPEAKER_04group, to be fair.
SPEAKER_02It's the worst group. I've not picked a first or a second.
SPEAKER_04I think there's one clear thing about number one anyway. We've got Funky Town, Lips Incorporated, number two, nineteen eighty. Don't worry, be happy by Bobby McFerrin, number two, nineteen eighty-eight. You're my favourite waste of time, Owen Paul, number three, nineteen eighty-six, and break my stride by Matthew Wilder, number four, in nineteen eighty-four. Massive hits, these, all of them. Before we rate the all star high in the chart.
SPEAKER_00So when people might say put some of the others through, well, D D, you know, we could we couldn't just pick up all our favourites, we had to pick the hits, sort of thing, and we've we've done that.
SPEAKER_02I think Break My Stride is the most I've ever been stunned by how the singer looks. Like, sounds a little bit kind of reggae. Nobody's gonna brighter my stride. Yeah, the guy, if you don't know who sings it, watch the video on YouTube. It blew my mind that that's how he looks.
SPEAKER_04I think the clear favourite for me in this is You're my favourite waste of time by Owen Paul. You're my favourite waste of time.
SPEAKER_00I I would agree with that. I think it would have gone out in most of the other groups. I agree. Um, but it I think this is a cover song as well, just saying.
SPEAKER_04Um it's uh yeah, is it the guy who oh go on. Uh I did read this. It's yeah, Marshall Corinthians were a B side, actually, uh, for somebody. But uh when Paul's the sing uh this uh he's the brother of one of Simple Minds, if that means anything. That's a bit of pop trivia for you, but yeah.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, I'm not a fan of any of the other songs, particularly in this group. I had to look up Funky Ten and I realised, oh, it's that one sort of thing. But uh what I would say is I think we've got a lot of songs that are quite uh late, sort of mid-late 80s. There's not as many early 80s, I would say. Um looking at it, and I think if that I mean that got number two in 980, I'd I don't think it it was up against things like Adam and the Ants then. I think if that had been in the charts later on the eight, I don't think it would have troubled that you're like the top ten.
SPEAKER_04No, and it is literally that all the way through, isn't it? What are you thinking, Liam?
SPEAKER_02Is any you if you had to if you're I mean if you kind of forced me to choose, I'd probably put two and three. So don't worry, be happy, and you're my favourite waste of time.
SPEAKER_00I think in a very weak group, the weak winners I'm happy. I think I'm happy with that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so don't don't you don't worry, be happy. We've got that going through. Uh group G then, Debart.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so group G um is Life in a Northern Town, The Dream Academy, which got to number 15 in 1985. It's Raining Men, The Weather Girls, which got to number two in 1984. Um Rip It Up, Orange Juice, number eight in 1983, and Rush Hour by Jane Wilding, number 12 in 1988.
SPEAKER_04Not a group, not a group for big hits, this one really, uh uh other than the Weather Girls. My favourite here is is uh Rip It Up by Orange Juice. I think this is a fantastic song.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, 100%. I mean, I will I will already say um now that um I obviously listened to the 90s uh episode and uh this is my White Town. Uh I'm I'm gonna call it early. Interesting. Absolutely. Obviously, Liam had a a big sort of um sort of push for White Town. Um I expect it to go D. It's got it's got a bit of funky, Jar, it's electric synthie, just the the the the way it starts that boun, bound, bound, bound, bound, bound, bow, bow, bow, bow, bop, bow.
SPEAKER_04Are you a fan of it, Liam?
SPEAKER_02No. Um so what I will say is so I went, I was listening to the Eastern Order, and I listened to our group air, Funky Town, don't worry, you're my favourite waste of time, break my stride. And I got to life in a northern town, it's raining men, and I was kind of on a real downer. I thought that this is this is an awful era of music. Rip it up, I listened to, and I kind of thought it's it's alright, but I don't like where this is going. For me, Rush Hour, Jane Wilden, give me a real lift. Like, I kind of I thought I'm I'm back, like I really needed like yeah. I I just thought, oh god, I'd forgotten this and it's great. And and then I kind of thought, right, I I'm in a better frame of mind to go back and listen to. And and I did then highlight rip it up as my second favourite. I initially I've kind of given up on choosing anything, so it was the one out of the group. I think life in a northern town, it's like a sort of TV theme sort of thing. I don't think it's a bit. Is it an advert? Yeah, it's on loads of adverts. Was it Dario G or somebody sampled it later on, didn't they?
SPEAKER_04I think it starts really well. Dario Grade. Dario Grade. I think it starts really well, but then it goes into that bit and I don't like it.
SPEAKER_00But it starts like the opening is bizarre because it comes in, something Salvanation Salvation Army band played, and the children drank lemonade, and the mourning lasted all day.
SPEAKER_04It's about apparently it's a tribute to Nick Drake, uh and it produced by David Gilmore as well, uh, of Pink Floyd fame.
SPEAKER_02Well, I don't like it. It's raining men. I mean, it's actually really funny if you listen to the lyrics. It is, yeah. Hey, I mean, I absolutely hate it.
SPEAKER_00It's raining men that would be my rank if I rank them all one to however many many's in it, it's 32. This might be my bottom. It's a gay anthem now.
SPEAKER_02There's two women in in like a room that they're watching these men really badly sort of CGI fall down past the window. They're that excited, they end up falling out of the window, like down to these men on the floor. And then they see men tonight. I'm gonna get myself absolutely soaking wet. I cannot wait for these men to rain down from the sky.
SPEAKER_04Do you know what they were used to be called? Sorry, go on, yeah. Because obviously they're quite big girls, they used to be called two tons of fun. That was the name.
SPEAKER_00Do you know what I hate? I hate the fact that not all women, but I think a lot of women go used to go mad over it. I but don't get me wrong, I'm I'm as big a feminist as you can as you can find. Oh, we all know that. I want other women, uh, but they should be ashamed of this. It's the same sort of ill because I don't know, girls just want to have fun. I mean, imagine if men wrote a song like this. I don't know, it snowing girls, snowing gals.
SPEAKER_04Well funny you mentioned snowing, but do you know the follow-up single was exactly the same song but about Santa? It was something like Santa's it's raining Santa, or whatever it was, like that. It was genuinely the same song. It's a shite song. I'm not having that it's a good song.
SPEAKER_00And Life in Northern Town is three for me. So we're putting through uh Rip It Up. I'd put Rip It Up as number one. Yeah, we're both gone for that as number one.
SPEAKER_02I would switch those two, but I'm yeah, I'm happy for the they're the right two to go through, yeah. Fair play, Liam and the file group. So I'd rather Jack, the Reynolds Girls, number nine in 1989, Shadapa Your Face by Joe Dolcey Music Theatre, number one in 1981, Voodoo Ray, a guy called Gerald. I got to number 12 in 1989, and suddenly by Angry Anderson, number three in 1988. The one thing I'll say is like, and again, I'm not sort of promoting a Softy Club paywall content, but I don't remember I'd rather Jack. But when I watched the video today, I I for some reason I thought of you and Webster doing that dance, and I was crying laughing to myself. If you guys recreated that, that is absolute top-notch content.
SPEAKER_04How does it go? Uh we don't bother no fleeper back, I'd rather now what is it? No rolling stones on verde down, the sort of doing a constantly cheesy dance, wasn't it?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was criticism. Stock Achin Waterman's.
SPEAKER_04Stock Achin and Waterman, it were a criticism of the people who were slagging Stock Achin and Waterman off. Um it's quite like quite a yeah, it's quite like a I don't know, like an archaic song in a way. Because everyone will say Stock Aching and Waterman actually all cheesy pop, it's all cheesy shit. And that was their way of getting back, saying, look, we've had enough at Rolling Stones and Beatles and Fleetwood Mike. I'd rather Jack than Fleetwood Mac. So it's quite uh yeah, it's quite and then they just disappeared, the Reynolds girls like did nothing.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean I d I don't rate that at all. Shut up your face is a novelty song, don't write that.
SPEAKER_00Shut up your face can't go through because it kept Vienna off number one.
SPEAKER_01He's got a tremendous introduction there where he comes on and he just says, Hello, Major, I got something special for you. Ready? Uh and then he comes in with it. It's just an absolute.
SPEAKER_04One of the biggest like songs of the of the decade. Who were kept buying that? Like, shah shadow. Surely after a what after a week that'll get as boring as a joke.
SPEAKER_01He says, Did you know I had a bigger hitter song in Italy with it?
SPEAKER_03It's Italian, but that kept Vienna off. Oh, Vienna.
SPEAKER_04That's like a really good ballad. I th I love Voodoo Ray, a guy called Gerald. I think that's a great acid house track.
SPEAKER_02I've got that as number two. I like it. I think for me, suddenly tops the group, but again, yeah, yeah, those two go through for me.
SPEAKER_04What about you, Debat?
SPEAKER_00Um, yeah, it suddenly is number one. You know, I don't know his angry answer. His name was Gary Anderson, which made me laugh.
SPEAKER_04Um, I mean, obviously it's famous for being the song player that's got and Charlene's wedding, but um but it's almost one of the it's one of those songs that it's almost impossible to sing and not almost go into the Katie Tunstall suddenly because you go, suddenly, yeah, see, suddenly, yeah. But it doesn't, he goes, suddenly, yeah, turn it just the way I am.
SPEAKER_02I think it feels like it's building to something that never quite gets there. I think it could have been a better song now, but I do like it. And what are you thinking for your number two demo?
SPEAKER_00Number two, I have I don't I'm not a massive fan of the I I get why everybody likes like the sort of people who are into the kind of I see that sort of scene, but um I I I I'm happy for it to go through it. Either that or I'd rather Jack. Uh I think it's a bit gimmicky, I'd rather Jack. I think I think voodoo. We haven't really had a song like that going through. No, fair dude. That should go through.
SPEAKER_04I think he might be the only person on this list I've actually seen live as well, guy called Gerald. Uh five out of ten, I gave him not great. Right, so we're into the round of sixteen, I'll read them out. It's author's theme versus I can't wait. The way it is versus safety dance, fast call versus rhythm of the night, waiting for a star to fall versus 99 red balloons. Bloody hell. Somebody's watching me versus rush hour, you're my favourite waste of time versus voodoo ray, rip it up versus turning Japanese, and suddenly versus don't worry, be happy. So the first one is author's theme versus I can't wait.
SPEAKER_00I think Arthur theme.
SPEAKER_02I think Arthur's theme's not great, but it's a comfortable winner in this round of things.
SPEAKER_04Oh I don't know. I think it's a great song, Liam. I think my uh one of my one of my favourites, I think, maybe this.
SPEAKER_00I was surprised when I because I heard the saw it and I was like, I can't quite remember this. I said earlier, and then I put it on, I was like, yeah, it is a good song. Got to number one in the US of A. Yeah, he's won loads of Grammys, Chris Chris.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. Well I think the often.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and a couple of others, yeah. But I imagine Baccharack was most of the heavy lifting.
SPEAKER_02It's not that is it, but it's something.
SPEAKER_04No, I can't remember it was, but I imagine he did most of the heavy lifting, Bert Baccarack, even at this stage, to be fair. Um so that goes to I think fairly easily. Uh right, the way it is versus safety dance.
SPEAKER_02Ooh, that's tougher.
SPEAKER_00Um yeah, I I I would definitely go way it is there. That was one of my one of my con one of the ones I pencil in as getting to sort of deep in the competition, but I know there's a a lot of love for safety dance.
SPEAKER_04I think I'd go the way it is, but I think safety dance is so unlucky to be going out this early. Yeah, it's a bad draw for it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I would agree with that. I would agree. I I like safety dance, but it it it's come up against one of the one of the favourites.
SPEAKER_04Uh fast car versus rhythm of the night. To me, this is an easy one for fast car.
SPEAKER_02It's tougher for me, even though I love fast car, but I agree. Fastcar is mad there.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it'd be interesting how far how far fast car gets because um I don't know, you don't really see it as a ward wonder, I don't think that.
SPEAKER_00But anyway, this is the it's mad that she only had like one top 40 hit because she had a beautiful voice. I know she did like she did a cover, didn't she, baby? Can I hold you? And she'd talk about Revolute, but that's crazy that she only had that one top 40 hit.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I mean, it's obviously off her first album. Um it got to number look here, it got to number six in the US as well. I don't think she's a one-it-wonder in the USA. No, but she definitely is here.
SPEAKER_02No. I mean, I I love, I've said it in a group chat,
Novelty Songs And Guilty Pleasures
SPEAKER_02but for my lover, I I love it. Two weeks in a Virginia jail for my lover, for my lover. I think that's such a good first line of a song. Two weeks in a Virginia jail. I love it.
SPEAKER_04Brilliant. This is the big one though. Waiting for a star to fall versus 99 red balloons, the ultimate 80 showdown, I think. This like Germany v.
SPEAKER_00Holland, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02So yeah, yeah, yeah. This is so difficult. I mean, obviously, I I didn't sort of push too hard for 99 red balloons to go through. I I like it for nostalgic reasons, so I'm waiting for a star, but I don't know. I've got I I'm not gonna argue too too firmly if you two want to go the other way.
SPEAKER_04I'd say I'm 50-50 on this. I am 50-50 on this. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm the same. I'm I'm sort of flipping. Uh I I think if I if somebody said you've you're taking one song to listen to uh you know on a desert island, desert island at this, I probably would take waiting for a star to fall. I know that's not the how we're looking at it, but no, but 99 Red Balloons has been overplayed, but it is a classic 80s song. I I really don't mind. I really, I really don't mind.
SPEAKER_04What I like about I think we're I think I'm gonna side with you both and go for waiting for a star to fall. But what I love about 99 Red Balloons is this three I'm I'm changing my mind as I'm saying it. This three br it's so it starts off with that amazing, you and I then it goes boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. You don't know where it's gonna go. Then it's got that incredible chorus.
SPEAKER_02It sort of pauses though and goes again, doesn't it?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, no, brilliant song. It's a fucking brilliant song.
SPEAKER_02I just think waiting for waiting for a star probably wins on a 5-4 thriller for me. Okay, we'll go for it. We'll go for it.
SPEAKER_03We'll go for it.
SPEAKER_00I think that's the one that's gonna get I think I think we're gonna dig in with people that there's gonna be like sort of Germans coming coming for it, but I'm on that one, but rightly so.
SPEAKER_04Because honestly, uh I I'd be like that guy off the off the Fash show keeps agreeing. If you if there were two different people here saying, Oh 99 Red Blue, I would get, oh yeah, definitely 99 Red Balloon. Yeah, yeah, yeah, definitely no way. The brilliant, two amazing songs, uh, which should really be for at least semi-finalists. Yeah, they they could have both got to the last four easily, I think. The next one is Somebody's Watching Me versus Rush Hour. I'm easy with this one.
SPEAKER_02I have a firm favourite. I've kind of but but whether it's just because of the way the day went and the way the journey took me, but rush hour, even though there's nostalgic reasons for uh somebody's watching me, I I think rush hour, the chorus, is is brilliant when you get to it.
SPEAKER_00I I I th I think I would go for for rush hour. I'm saying as well, I'm fucking with it. I mean, it's the does she like ride a dolphin in the video? It starts off, yeah. She jumps it. Yeah, no, she does actually. Yeah, I think when it gets to the chorus, she's got a big thing. I cannot believe the wheel, yeah. It is just uh she was in the Go Go Girls with Belinda Carlisle. I did not know that. Yeah, they've got a lot of fling with Terry Hall in the specials. Webding.
SPEAKER_02But that that's oh, you send me that. I think that's such a good little melody, that middle part of the song. It's brilliant.
SPEAKER_04I think this has got a chance, but it's good. Well, you say that because it's up against this next quote. And I don't know if these are big like you're my favourite waste of time versus voodoo ray. I think I'd go voodoo ray as an acid house head, but I might be out of my yeah, I might that might just be me.
SPEAKER_02What do you think? No, I'm I'm I'm in complete disagreement. I I I don't think there's too much in it, but no, I'm I'm I'm not with you on that one.
SPEAKER_00Um I what I've forgotten even what the songs were. You're my you're my favourite way to um yeah, I I I think I would put that through. The voodoo ray, yeah, it's I don't know. It it doesn't I'm not into that sort of music, so that that's my and and the 80s is to me was m the dance stuff sort of came in towards the end of the 90s, so uh I'm trying to be representative of the era and well we might do an episode of Axidows, me and Liam as a fishing ardour's of the scene at some point, anyway.
SPEAKER_04So we'll not that out. Uh Rip It Up versus Turning Japanese.
SPEAKER_02I mean, to me, this is one of them where you think like you're watching Cape Verde against I don't know, the San Marino and thinking how on earth did he get out of the group?
SPEAKER_00I completely disagree. I think Rip It Up's a fantastic song, honestly. For me, I if I when I was looking at the list, I say I've said it again, I I conceivably had that as a certainly a fine list. I I think it's an amazing song. I think Rip It Up's gonna go far. I think Liam's gonna go for it. It was um me and Roy. Um Edwin Collins was the Yeah, did you know about Liam? Yeah, went on to have a girl like you.
SPEAKER_04It's the same singer as never met a girl like you.
SPEAKER_00That sounds slightly ridiculous. Well, this is gonna be interesting, then but but this that this for me is a superb song.
SPEAKER_02I mean, this is not by the way, I I don't like this is not one where I'm saying, Oh for fuck's sake, I hate these songs. They're fine. I just I can't for me personally, I can't make a strong case. Well, I think when it gets to the semester, it's my favourite of the two if if I had to choose.
SPEAKER_04Well we'll get when we get closer to the thing, we'll we'll have a proper debate. We'll deal with it. Well, this is where you need to give up an argument. Anyway, suddenly versus don't worry, be happy. I think it's got to be suddenly.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah. Not again, not a sort of real strong winner, but yeah, I do think it's the better of the two.
SPEAKER_04Suddenly, uh Angry Anderson is such a good name. And if anyone sees a picture of him, did you see a picture of him, Liam, in the video? Uh yeah, I did, yeah. I can't remember. Little bald man. Um, yeah, looks like Angry.
SPEAKER_00Does anybody research that?
SPEAKER_04I don't know, because he's doing all these ballads. Angry that I don't know that he only had one hit. That's what he's fuming about. No idea. Right, it's a quarterfinals. We've got the first quarter final, Arthur's theme versus Fast Car.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I think it's fairly easy. We've been a big big advocate for for old Chris Cross, but I think I think that uh tra Tracy's going through it. It's March, hasn't it?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I think I'd have probably got Arthur's theme, but I'm happy. I don't think there's much in it. I don't I won't be putting up much of an argument. This is so hard. The way it is versus waiting for a star to fall.
SPEAKER_00Oh gosh.
SPEAKER_04This is so so so. By a mile. Yeah. Both quite not similar, because waiting for a star fall is obviously much cheesier, whereas the way it is, I think it's about racial equality and stuff like that. So it's obviously a much more serious song, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a better song for a one at one day.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And again, this uh Bruce Hornsby had fit many hits in America, you know, uh only the one over here.
SPEAKER_02I like his song as well with uh a a good chorus but a really strong verse that you're not just waiting for the chorus, and I think the way it is certainly has that.
SPEAKER_04I'd like to mention that as one of genuinely uh one of the things I was gonna say is waiting for a start to fall, you're sort of waiting for that chorus.
SPEAKER_02You you that's the hook. Whereas I think the way it is, I I don't know the way it is.
SPEAKER_00I think if I was leaning one way, I think I would I would go I'd uh I'd go Hornsby here.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, he's got a new album out apparently this year, Bruce Hornsby. So you know, maybe maybe spur it a bit.
SPEAKER_02This is another moment where the listener may well be not happy with that decision. I don't know.
SPEAKER_04That's a good song.
SPEAKER_02That's a good song. No, no, both good, but I think for some people waiting for a star might be their kind of early pick to win it, maybe. When I first saw the list, I thought, oh, that'll do well.
SPEAKER_04This is pure eight, is this rush hour versus you're my favourite waste of time.
SPEAKER_02I'm Rush Hour. I I don't know if that's just a personal preference though, but I'm I personally am Rush Hour.
SPEAKER_00He's a good I think it's possibly the maybe the weakest quarterfinal so far. Yeah, yeah. Uh but I I think Rush Hour just had a I can't see it going much further. I think she's had a great run.
SPEAKER_04Well, this is incredible because Russian Hour's in the in the semi-finals, and the the other quarterfinal is rip it up versus suddenly. The first half of the draw has been so much more difficult. The way it's like fallen, there's a lot of songs here. This is Southgate's half, innit? This is Southgate's half of the draw. He's managed to like, yeah. Rip it up versus suddenly. As you know, me and Debat both love rip it up. But can you put anything up again for suddenly, Liam, that makes us change his mind?
SPEAKER_02No, and actually, despite the fact I don't love Rip It Up, I I probably do prefer it suddenly.
SPEAKER_04So it's going to become your favourite song of all time, but yeah, what I was doing, go back, go back and listen to it again.
SPEAKER_00Just listen to it a couple more times, come back to us.
SPEAKER_04This is an infantino, do we referees? Keep looking at that decision, keep coming back and having a look. Two semi-finalists here. One of them is a heavyweight challenge. The other one, maybe two shocks. You've got fast car versus the way it is, and rush hour versus rip it up. Fast car versus the way it is. This is again, I've got my head in my hands here. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I've got I've got a favourite. I don't want to go too early. If you two kind of want to wanna bash it out for your opinion, because I I have got a definite favourite out of the two.
SPEAKER_04I think I prefer the way it is. I love get a job. The first time I ever heard the way it is or the piano riff was actually from Tupac, you know, Changes.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. Been through changes. Somebody embraces fast. I mean, if Deadbat agrees, my dis my point is is moot anyway. Uh oh, really? You've got fastbart.
SPEAKER_04Oh, that's good that. This is what we want man.
SPEAKER_02I'm ready on Fastcar. I reckon if you're playing these songs to an alien or someone who's never heard music before, fast car is a real first time you hear it, you think, wow, that is a that is a fucking song. And I'm not sure you have the same takeaway feeling from uh going.
SPEAKER_00I agree, but I think going the other way, having I think fast car's been massively overplayed, and it's a bit like I I compare it to the Lars when you did your 90s one, it's an amazing song, but like it's just like I don't know, it's almost like I've heard it too much now. Whereas it the way it is comes on like straight away. I'd I it still feels fresh to me that so I'm probably I'm probably just the way it is, but uh you know I'm what I'll give in fast cars favour if we want to if we want to look into this, much bigger hit for way it is number 15.
SPEAKER_04Can we have a song get into the final that got a little bit of a few?
SPEAKER_02I think if if we're a two against one, I don't think chart position comes into it. So I I you know I I take your point, but I don't think that's relevant if you two are gonna go that way. I I just think fast car if you want sort of work of art music that that could be in your top sort of 100. These are iconic songs you must hear before you die. If you if you find a a guy on a beach who's lost his memory and he's dying and he needs 100 songs, I'm putting fast car on it. I'm not putting that the way it is. But if you two right now in this moment feel fast car because fast car is overplayed, I do I do accept that. If if you two leaning the other way, uh do you know what if you'd have asked me this three months ago?
SPEAKER_04I don't know why I said three months ago, two weeks ago before we said we were going to do this, and I started listening to all these songs, and I probably would have gone fast car.
SPEAKER_02And in the last two weeks, you've been listening to fast car and a loop repeatedly, haven't you?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, repeatedly. No, but honestly, since we've like said we're doing this, I've been listening to like what I thought would get quite far, and obviously I knew these two would get pretty far. I got into the way it is, but uh this time next month I might go fast car. It's a proper flip of a coin.
SPEAKER_02Do you do you know now you two probably do because you're both sort of more musical minded than I am? But do you know if the top B who sang uh the way it is? Uh Bruce Hornsby and the range. Oh, so his name's actually in the band then, so that gives it away, doesn't it? I wonder if you'd know the name of the singer if it was just that's a bit of a problem. Yeah. Fronted by uh do you know who sang uh Tracy Chapman Fast Car?
SPEAKER_04Well it's funny, we we uh went to a gig with some guy who didn't do uh anything about the band, the the person we
Late Groups And Acid House Detour
SPEAKER_04see, Alex Alexis Taylor from Otchair, because oh what do you think? And he said, Oh, I think it'd be better with a different singer. Because like he is the that he is a singer. Like it's like saying Mariah Carey would be better without Mariah Carey. What are we saying then? Because this is the same thing.
SPEAKER_02It sounds like Fast Car's gone. I I think that's that's heartbreak time, but but fair enough. I you sometimes the best team doesn't always go through. And then rush hour versus rip it up in a not yeah, in the in the I mean the thing with this is, and I'll I'll get in early, I prefer rush hour of the two, but rush hour I I didn't know what it was until I re-listened today. I can't claim it's a song that like is constantly on my playlist, it's just when I heard it, it was some relief from some of the shite that came before it.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, I I can't make a real strong case for rush hour, but I I do feel bad for Liam because I feel like it's kind of we kind of like uh we kind of like sort of um two on one for uh the last few.
SPEAKER_04Bullying, innit? Yeah, it's democracy, man.
SPEAKER_02It's democracy, it's democracy.
SPEAKER_04That's why we're genuinely, that's why we want a three on for thee. Because when we did a breakfast serial one, we oh uh we with the Coco Pops and Frosty's final, we genuinely didn't we spend about twenty. Well, I've heard people have listened, we spent about 20 minutes going, oh I don't know, oh I don't know. So we do need three people.
SPEAKER_02Do you know what? I don't think there's been a miscarriage of justice at any point.
SPEAKER_00And I think the draws, the draws not felt there are songs like Waiting for a Starter 4, 99 Red Balloons that easily could have been here instead of others. Um, you know, I I think fast car and the way it is were definitely two strong ones for me. I like Rip It Up. I didn't know that Roy would was a fan as well. I I thought that would probably have gone by now, even though I I I was a I was a big fan. So uh it's just just why it's full.
SPEAKER_04But no, I would I would uh I think I would I'll tell you what then see this we've got two of our the wooden spoon, Liam. You get to choose out of Fast Car and Rush Hour for the third place.
SPEAKER_02Oh, it's fast car comfortably. Fastcar comes third. Should be happy with that, I think, chat. This is a sort of thing for me that if I hear a song that I really like, what I tend to do is go and look for acoustic covers of it. And out of the full list, Rush How's the one that I went and thought, I wonder if there's any sort of real good vocal versions of that. So yeah, it was my sort of highlight of the day, but you two have robbed that bit of joy from me. So let's move into the final. If it's done really well, Rush Hour to get to a semi final. To be fair, I never thought it'd be anywhere near a semi-final when I listened to it. So yeah, I'm out.
SPEAKER_00Who covered it recently? Someone someone quite well known covered it, didn't they? Yeah, I don't know if it was put into a live dancy version of it, I'm not sure Joy Rider uh covered it. No, apparently.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, like yeah, yeah, yeah, dance thing. I don't know, I will have heard it, but so the final of the H is one it wonder World Cup is the way it is versus rip it up. This I mean Liam's might be the one here.
SPEAKER_00He's like uh he's like Senegal, isn't he? Yeah, he's gone down the tunnel.
SPEAKER_04He's gone down the tunnel, he's not coming back up, he's not coming back up.
SPEAKER_02Oh god. I actually think the the irony is here, bro. You you could be the deciding vote because obviously Deadbats made a strong case for rip it up. I don't love it. I I really like the way it is. It probably probably wouldn't have won it for me at the start of the tournament, but I don't mind it being in the final. I know you love both of these, so I I don't know, Deadbat, can you sway him towards Rip It Up?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you do an argument each and I'll uh yeah I don't know to be honest because even me sat here now I I'm struggling to pick one one of the two. I I I I think I don't know. I I I probably would just go Hornsby actually. Really? Oh for the bulls. But again, like you said earlier, I could be here next week and I could have a different song, so I I don't know. I don't know. And I take it your Hornsby Liam.
SPEAKER_02I am. I mean, as I say, the the difference is had it been up against a fast car, even a waiting for a star, I'd have been probably stronger. Sort of that that that that's got to win. In this final Yeah, I don't I I am I am certainly leaning towards the way it is, but I'm I'm not as sort of one-sided as you might think in this particular.
SPEAKER_04I think I prefer rip it up as a song, but in terms of this tournament, as daft as this might sound, don't really strike me as an 80s song, rip it up, in the sense of the way it is, it's so much more nostalgic. I think rip it up could be from the 70s, 80s, 90s.
SPEAKER_02The funny thing is, if if before we'd done these two tournaments you'd ask me the way it is, I would have thought that was a 90s song at 92, 93. I think it feels very 90s.
SPEAKER_04But early 90s, though, I'd say at Mark. It's got that nostalgic. And I think arguing for rip it up, I want it rip it up to go in round one. It's got into Edwin Collins at last. I think the thing is with the way it is, I mean, like I say, I think I prefer rip it up as a song. The way it is, the the fact it did that grant. I don't know if you remember that, Liam. I think we shared it on the car, yeah.
SPEAKER_05I do, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Might share it again, just forget. Yeah, I think it went like quite viral because people were like going, Oh yeah, I remember when they had like the way it is as the background music to the league tables, like it were fantastic.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean I in a way though, like this is it's mad that I'm kind of making the argument for it. I don't know if I'd have been a little bit disappointed pre-tournament if someone had said the way it is wins. Because I like it, it's a decent song. I just don't think it's all that exciting.
SPEAKER_00You know what? I'm flipping as you speak. I mean, yeah, I know that's bad, but I am I I don't know. I I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Rip it up's a bit more of a kind of interesting winner where I might have said, Oh, I'd have to go and have a listen to that again. Yeah, I'll have to check that out. The way it is feels a bit like we've gone a bit boring with our choices. Like, yeah, I'll tell you what.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna get I think I'm I'll I'm um you've convinced me. I will I think Rip It Up should win now.
SPEAKER_04And this makes us look quite cool because it's quite an unusual rip rip it up, is not if someone said an 80s one it wonder. This was one of the last ones I put on the list because I did not know this were an 80s 1 at Wonder. I'd heard the song, I love the song, but I didn't realise Orange User only had one hit. Obviously, I'd sort of got confused. Edmund Collins still releasing music today. I didn't I think this makes us look like we know more than we do about music having this as well.
SPEAKER_00I think I think the general kind of mute like listeners who have sort of heard 80 songs will be absolutely just raging at some of the songs that haven't won. Flickmate in it, that's what we've got. Like Red Balloons, um, you know, Fast Car, um Wait for a Start of Fall. There's some absolute classics. Um but we've gone for we've gone for quite a I would say I think it's quite a niche, niche song. I think people know it, but I think it's a bit of a niche, cool edgy song, and I think it represents you know cool, niche guys, really. Yeah, I think so, yeah.
SPEAKER_04And I'd like to say, there'd be a lot of people listening who won't have heard it, I don't think. And we've we've we've opened your eyes. That's what we but our mate, didn't he? Russell Paul Jones used to want us to do a musical education night, didn't he, as a DJ set? And it would just basically play in his favourite songs that he thought. To educate the crowd, yeah, to educate the crowd, or it was more educational. He literally was gonna call it Russell's musical educational night. Um, and that's what we're basically we're doing the same. We've had a winner.
SPEAKER_02I think it's a it's probably a penalties win. I think it was behind at night, sort of coming into night minutes, late equaliser, and then it's it's sort of nicked it late in the game.
SPEAKER_04It's the only time a Scott Scottish person's won uh won a World Cup as well. So all got out of the group, or got out of the group stage. Fair play to Edmund Collins, he's had his problems as well, hasn't he? He had a stroke recently. Well, about 15 years ago now.
SPEAKER_00But um, people will be really surprised that this winner and the 90s winner. I don't think many people would have called the winners from from either, but um that's well hopefully we're gonna be doing a nougatties one.
SPEAKER_04We've had a uh a request from that from somebody. Um I can only think of JCB song off the top of my head, but stay tuned uh for a naughty one it wonders uh thing. But yeah, thank you so much for the first time. No, no, no.
SPEAKER_02Before we go, do we talk about uh Mr. Webding's where where he got to? We're gonna reveal his sort of final four or something.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah, because he did it on his yeah, sorry, he did this before telling us, didn't he? Uh before we went live. Deadbat's got Web Webding, who did the 90s One It Wonders with us. Uh his his choices.
SPEAKER_00Um I can't whether one of you can open it because it won't open. Oh, I've got a minute. Let me just see if we can get this open here. He just sent them a message saying you've lost your minds. I don't he hasn't even listened to it. So how does he know he's lost our minds? Because he's obviously seen who's gone through on the live dot.
SPEAKER_02Have you been doing it?
SPEAKER_00Oh, right. Oh, yeah. I didn't have that open if you were doing it. So interesting feedback. First your minds.
SPEAKER_02You've lost your minds.
SPEAKER_04Absolutely incredible. You've lost your minds. What's the matter with him? We'll see what happens. Uh, I can only open it up my phone. Give me two seconds. Yeah, no, no. This is this is fantastic to uh to end. People are gonna be at the edge of the season.
SPEAKER_00I probably should have looked to that as you were as you were going through.
SPEAKER_04Just looked at the documentary.
SPEAKER_02Oh well, we we thought we were sort of quite cool by getting to the winner we got to the first catch. Straight away.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, straight away. To be honest, he's only sent unless I've gone completely mad, he's not he's only sent the group stage with us. And I can't open it because he's done it. We can't forget that. It says open for me, so I can't. He says open, you can't open it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I tried to open it and it came up and now it won't open. He's got it up there.
SPEAKER_02He's fudging his results now and he's trying to match the surprise.
SPEAKER_00Frasically going
Round Of Sixteen Knockout Decisions
SPEAKER_00back and changing.
SPEAKER_04We'll share, we'll share Webdig's results. Yeah, we'll share Webdig's results as a as a Bruce of Otis. That's a that's a really good ending, that uh yeah. So we can't open them because he's he's got it on that thing where you can only open it once and it disappears, and because Deadbat opened it earlier, he's gone now.
SPEAKER_00I still can't see it, even though I've done it. I don't know what's happening there.
SPEAKER_04Anyway, doesn't matter. Thank you very, very, very much. Good stuff, guys. Cheers, Dead Bat. Enjoyed that, it was good.
SPEAKER_02Uh I like I like where we got to. Um, it wouldn't have been my choice, but I like I like how we we reasoned it out and we're gonna be able to do that.
SPEAKER_00I feel like I've had I feel like I've had some redemption, Liam, for all the times I've been on my runs listening to your dodgy music choices and literally gone against most of your choices tonight. It's not gonna win this one. This has been you educating me, hasn't it?
SPEAKER_02So, yeah, thank you for that. What I find funny is though, on your next run, if you stop to be furious at yourself at your own bad decision.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. Rip it!
SPEAKER_04Yeah, gone for my conviction with horns be unbelievable stuff. Right, thank you very much, Deb Bart, and I'm sure we'll have you on again uh for for for more remembering.
