Chapter and Pillow: Drift to Sleep with the Classics

The Selfish Giant and The Devoted Friend

Kathleen Season 1 Episode 6

Welcome back to Chapter & Pillow—where stories drift into sleep. This is a quiet space, always free of ads and interruptions. Just stories, thoughtfully narrated, to help you find stillness and peace at the end of your day. I hope you enjoy listening to them as much as I enjoy sharing them.

Tonight’s episode features two classic fairy tales by Oscar Wilde:
🌸 The Selfish Giant
🌿 The Devoted Friend

I think you'll enjoy these timeless stories. They were first published in 1888 as part of Wilde’s The Happy Prince and Other Tales, and are filled with all of the things that make us feel good: symbolism, gentle lessons, and poetic language.

In The Selfish Giant, we meet a towering figure who shuts children out of his garden, only to discover that spring cannot return until kindness does. It’s a soft, redemptive tale of change and generosity.

The Devoted Friend follows a poor gardener and a wealthy miller, who explore the nature of true friendship, with Wilde’s blend of wit and a bit of wisdom at the end.

Whether you listen wide awake or drift into sleep along the way, I hope you enjoy them.
