Tonight on Chapter & Pillow, we settle in with T.S. Arthur’s touching 19th-century story, An Angel in Disguise.
The story takes place in a small village following a family tragedy, where a poor, bedridden young girl named Maggie is left entirely alone because no one in the town wants the burden of caring for her. Finally, a rough country wheelmaker takes her into his home just for one night out of pure pity. What follows is a beautiful, quiet transformation as the little girl's presence changes a cold, lonely household.
This soft, ad-free narration features slow pacing to help you quiet your thoughts, let go of the day, and drift off naturally.
Behind the Story: T.S. Arthur was an incredibly famous editor and author in the mid-1800s, and he spent his life using his writing to advocate for social good and family compassion. He was actually close friends with several major political figures of his day, who deeply admired his ability to take heavy, difficult real-world issues and turn them into small, gentle stories that could touch the hearts of everyday readers.
