Did you know that according to UNESCO, safeguarding intangible cultural heritage is not just about preservation, but it's also a powerful engine for economic development? By enhancing its functions within society and integrating it into economic policy, culture truly becomes a catalyst for growth. In this episode, we confront a compelling challenge right here in New York City.

one that I've come to call the Garifuna Paradox. Here is the heart of this paradox. The spy possessing an extraordinary vibrant wealth of intangible cultural heritage, a dynamic tapestry of language, electrifying music, captivating dance, intricate visual arts, and soul satisfying cuisine.

A heritage officially recognized by UNESCO as a masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity, the Garifuna people are largely underrepresented, almost invisible, as active participants within the thriving landscape of New York City's cultural and creative industries. It is a stark contrast between immense cultural capital and limited

economic engagement. How can we transform this invaluable intangible heritage into tangible opportunities? How do we move from cultural recognition to economic empowerment within the bustling cultural and creative industries? This is the core question we seek to answer and more importantly to actively

change. We understand that culture is not simply a concrete manifestation. It's not just a dance, performance, a song, a musical instrument, or a craft. It is a profound driver and enabler of economic, social, and environmental development. Yet, for too long, Garifuna communities have, in many ways, stood on the sidelines of this rapidly changing creative economy.

Jose Francisco Avila (02:18.2)
This isn't for lack of talent, passion, or heritage, but often due to systemic challenges, like Garifunas being among historically the underserved communities, a lack of robust infrastructure, limited access to crucial investment, and insufficient platforms for global visibility. This paradox represents a significant missed opportunity, not just for our community,

but for New York City itself. But we believe with every fiber of our being that Garifuna Arts and Culture represents incredibly fertile ground for strategic partnerships and innovative projects, initiatives that will directly empower our community to shape its own prosperous future, to step into the light.

of the creative industry. Consider this striking reality. New York City holds the esteemed title of the cultural capital of the world. It is also home to the largest Garifuna population outside of Central America. A vibrant diaspora estimated to be over 250,000, that's a quarter of a million, my friends. Strong. Arts and culture are what makes New York

New York. Culture gives New York world class status. To fully grasp the magnitude of this opportunity, let's look at the broader landscape of New York City's cultural world. It gives us a tremendous amount to celebrate. Millions of New Yorkers engage with arts and culture in every neighborhood in the city. The city boasts a multi-billion dollar

cultural sector that is a magnet for talent and visitors from across the world, truly fueling the economy. Arts and culture are also central to healthy, thriving communities in the five boroughs. Some of this strength has been developed through prolonged government and philanthropic support. The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs is the largest municipal funder of culture in the country.

and is committed to providing access to art and culture for all New Yorkers. But other cultural groups have emerged from the grassroots level, driven by the community needs, entrepreneurial spirit, and simple love for what they do. Some artists strive through the support of well-funded galleries, museums, concert halls, theaters, or dance companies. Others survive.

in informal spaces or in collectives with disparate streams of self-generated income. The creative economy is more than just an agglomeration of cultural pursuits. It is a defining economic sector for New York City, on par with finance, real estate, or law. New York City's creative sector has long been a vital contributor

to the city's economy, its vibrancy, diversity, and overall quality of life. Yet, even within this colossal global hub of creativity and commerce, the Garifuna paradox persists. Our rich cultural capital is not yet fully integrated, not yet fully benefiting from the immense opportunities that this dynamic

cultural and creative industry sector offers. It's undeniably time to bridge that gap and claim our rightful place. This is precisely where the Garifuna Experience podcast steps in. Our core aim is to actively develop the Garifuna community's capacity to contribute significantly to New York City's cultural and creative economy.
