What happens when denial is no longer a temporary defense but becomes the way we live?

In this episode, we explore the subtle but dangerous ways denial can shape our hearts, relationships, and spiritual lives. Over time, we can begin to create an idealized version of reality—seeing what we wish were true instead of what actually is. While denial may protect us from pain for a season, it can also keep us spiritually stagnant, emotionally disconnected, and unable to experience the freedom God desires for us.

Together, we'll examine chronic denial, the patterns we inherit through our families and culture, and the danger of appearing spiritually "fine" while quietly becoming numb on the inside. Most importantly, we'll talk about what it means to take off the clothes of denial and put on the truth—not as an act of shame, but as an invitation into healing, freedom, and deeper intimacy with God.

God never calls us to pretend. He calls us to bring our whole selves before Him. When we have the courage to be honest about where we are, we make room for His grace to meet us there. The path to transformation begins with truth.

If you've ever felt stuck, disconnected, or like you're simply going through the motions, this episode will encourage you to step out of denial, embrace God's truth, and begin walking in the freedom that comes from living authentically before Him.

Welcome to Abundling Love Podcast with your host, Gwendolyn Malika Noah. Hey y'all, and welcome to Abundling Love Podcasts. And thank you so much for subscribing and following the podcast. And thank you for subscribing and following the YouTube page for the Ministry Love Abundling Ministry. I am so grateful that you've been with me on this journey. And this has been an intense journey and an intense season talking about denial. And I say it's intense because it is so difficult to face ourselves. And as I've been talking to you about it, I've been sharing my story and facing the different aspects of my life where I've been in denial and how I had to confront myself and confront and face the lies I've been telling myself so that I can live an honest walk with God. And that's the only way we can grow deeper intimacy with God is if we're honest. And if we're truly facing the things that's blocking us from being intimate with Him. Denial is one of those roadblocks that stop us from really growing closer to God. We can fool ourselves. That's one of the biggest things that we can do as human beings, that our brains are so powerful that we can fool ourselves to think that we're okay when we're not really okay. We think the more that we say it, the more we say it, we more say it over and over again that we're okay, we're okay, okay, that we eventually get to that point. But what is the truth? The truth is right now, honestly, I'm not okay. And it's okay not to be okay. It's okay to face those different aspects of your character, to face the different aspects of your upbringing, the aspects of your life and totality, in order for you to get towards or walk towards the healing that you need. Y'all, it is sad to live a life in denial and never get to that aspect of what you were truly created to be. In Jeremiah 29, 11, God says, I have plans. I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. He didn't just say I have plans, he said, I know the plans that I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. These plans are plans to give you hope in the future. When you seek me, and here's the catch there though, when you seek me with all your heart, I will be found by you. Go back and read that. He says that I already have these plans written out for you. Plans that I wrote out before you were even born, plans when you were in my imagination, when I was knitting you together in your mother's womb. I had the plans, and I still have those plans. But what are you doing in order for you to walk in step with those plans? Denial blocks us from walking in step with the plans that God wrote out for us before we're even born. So the purpose of our podcast is to draw you back, to draw you back, to call you back to God's heart, wherever you may be in your walk. I don't know where you are right now. If you're listening and you just found this podcast, I don't know where you are. But the whole purpose of plan of this ministry of the podcast is to pull you back into intimacy with God. But in order to get there, we have to examine where we are right now. That is the purpose. Let's examine where we are right now. Name it, call it out, explore it, break through it so we can get to the healing part, to get in the intimacy part with God. That's it. I want to bring you back to the garden. That's the whole point. God has brought me back to the garden. And I'm in the garden with all my other brothers and sisters that have taken this, walked along this path with me, or walked along this path in their own individual walk too, to get to this point of being able to get back to the garden with God, back to the intimacy. But in order to get back there, we got to take off the different things that we put on. But we got to look at our bodies, we got to look at our minds, we gotta look at our lives to see what I've been clothing myself with. And if denial is one of those things that you've been clothing yourself with, now it's time to see it through the lenses of the truth, name it for what it is, and begin to shed it. As a mental health therapist, because if you don't know that I've said this several times on my podcast, I'm a mental health therapist, um, licensed in Tennessee, and I'm also a pastoral counselor, a Christian coach, and I coach through this ministry. But the main thing that I do with my clients, and even with myself, y'all, this is what I do with them. I can't do something I haven't done for myself. But I call you back to the truth. I call you to face what is the reality. We talk about acceptance a whole lot, because acceptance then is the opposite of denial, basically. Because when I accept something, and radical acceptance is the part of dialectical behavior therapy. When I radically accept something, that means I'm truly seeing it for what it is, and not through the lenses of what I will I wish it could be or what I want it to be, but really for what it really is. Oh, y'all, that's a hard concept to wrap your mind around because when you want something so much, when you desire something so much, we can create this part of our brains, can create this imaginary space of what we desire, what we want, and it blocks us from seeing what it really is. And so today on our podcast, we are talking about the topic for the day, y'all. We are talking about when denial becomes a lifestyle, when denial becomes a lifestyle, and that's what I'm describing right now. We're clothing ourselves with denial, which becomes how we live, right? It becomes the way we view ourselves, the way we view our lives. So I'm gonna be hitting some points today. One of the points we're gonna be talking about is chronic denial and the spiritual stagnation of it, what it leads to, right? We're gonna talk about patterns passed down through family and church culture. And the last thing we're gonna talk about is the danger of appearing okay while spiritually numb. So, chronic denial and spiritual stagnation, chronic denial and spiritual stagnation. Denial is a defense mechanism. We talk about that and when I first did the first episode, I think I mentioned that. It's a defense mechanism, it stops us from really truly seeing what we are spiritually and really truly seeing what we are in our individual lives. If we're not honest about what we are spiritually, we're gonna be stuck. That's the stagnation part, being stuck. And we end up like this, what Jesus is saying here. I'm gonna go with you guys to John 7 and in verse 15 to 23. I'm reading the NIV version. Like I told y'all last time, if you're watching this on my YouTube channel, go to my YouTube abundantly love podcast is on YouTube and love abundantly ministry, y'all. But anyway, well used, but anyway, in John, I mean Matthew chapter 7 and verse 15, it says, Watch out for false prophets, they come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves by their fruit. You will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear fruit, bear good fruit, is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit, you will recognize them. Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven. But only he who does the will of my father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? And in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles? Then I would tell them plainly, I never knew you away from me, you evil doers. That's what denial does. It can lead us to think, okay, did I not prophesy in your name, Lord? Did I not share my faith over here with this person over here? Did I not perform this amazing song on Stella Awards or get this or on the Grammys? Did I not go and and I preached at this church over here? Did I not sing in this choir over there? And we got this amazing accolades. We did all those different things. But Jesus would look at you and say, Get away from me, you evil doer, because you did not do the will of my father. What is the will of my father? The will of my father is to obey me. Jesus says, I am the way, the truth, and the light. Anyone who comes to me knows my father because my father is the one who's sending you to me. Jesus is saying to us all, in order for you to come before me, you have to obey me. Just because you do these great performances, just because you can speak in multiple tongues, or just because you can prophesy, or just because you can do all those different things. But if your life is not aligned with my word, get away from me, you evil doer. That's what Jesus is saying. That's what stagnation looks like. Us thinking that we're living a life that we're supposed to, that we're doing what's right before God, we're fooling ourselves, thinking that we're doing what's right, even though we're sleeping around, having multiple purpose, having affairs, we're cursing people out, we're lying, we're gossiping, we're deceiving other people, all these different things that we can do in the churches, thinking that we're okay. If I go to church on Sunday, it's okay for me to go to church on Sunday, but the rest of the week is mine. I got to read my Bible because I go to church and I can confess my sin. I go there, I fall out on the floor, I pray Jesus in my heart. I do the altar calls, I do all it on Sunday, but the rest Monday through Friday is mine. Y'all, that is living in denial. That is stagnation. That is, y'all, false prophets, false teachings. That is not the truth of God, it's not, and I'm adamant about that because that's how I used to live myself. Y'all, I performed in gospel choirs and professional gospel choirs. I remember being in college, being a part of a professional gospel choir, singing by uh we sang with Twinkie Clark, then at the same time going to church on Sundays, but before on that Sarah, though, going out to PJs, which is the club, that night, grinding on somebody, having sexual impure thoughts, all those days. And like I said to y'all before, I'm a virgin, I'm waiting to marriage, but it doesn't mean that I was pure. And if you go and listen to my book, 40 years of virgin, while the way, you would know what I'm talking about. I was thinking I was a Christian, thinking I was doing because why? Why was I thinking because I grew up in a Christian household, quote unquote, and I said, 'quote unquote,' because I didn't see now that I'm reading the Bible, I did not see that in my household. I love my family, I love my mama, I love my dad. But a lot of things were not biblical, and that's what I grew up being. That's my life. I grew up thinking that it was okay for me to go to church on Sunday, but then afterwards, the rest of my life is my life. That's what all of us may grow up in. That's what this nation teaches us. That we can go to church on Sundays, and that's when the rest of us and the rest of our walk, the rest of the week is our lives. That is a false teaching. It is because if I'm saying I'm a disciple of Jesus, that means my life is no longer mine. My life belongs to God. That means that basically I have to make decisions and choices that align with what He wants me to do, not based on what Gwendolyn Malika Miller wants to do, what my flesh wants to do. But that's where we live, that's what we think Christianity is here in America. Y'all, Christianity here in America is a watered down version. A lot of us are spiritual stagnant because we've been following this false teaching that we're okay. We just had to do the minimal thing to be a Christian. We just we just had to go to church on Sunday. I can read my Bible a little bit, I can memorize some scriptures, but I can go around and I can curse somebody out and go around, get drunk, be drunkard, and go around and and and gossip all the time and have malicious in my heart. Malicious is in my heart, but I can say, no, I don't, I don't hate anybody, I'm a good person. Jesus Himself said, told, told the uh the the the rich young ruler, there's no one good but God. So if you walk around thinking you're a good person, that's a lie too. That's a denial too, because nobody is good but God. Period. None of us, we all deserve death. All of us are falling short of the glory of God. But we have to realize that in our wall, we have to see where we really, really are and name a spade of spade. You know why some people say, call the spade of spade, call the spade of spade, say the reality because that's the only way we're gonna move forward. That's the only way you can have a breakthrough. Call a spade spade. But what happens is when we're in spiritual stagnation, it's like quit saying. We think we're okay and we're we're remaining in it, and we think we're okay, but we're not moving anywhere. That's what we mean to be sad. We just we think we're going somewhere, but we're not really going anywhere. But what ends up happening when we're in quit saying, it sucks you under, which basically means it can you can spiritually die being spiritually in satination. Let me look at this, y'all. I want y'all to look at this other scripture in John chapter, and not John, but in Revelation chapter three, I want you to hear what what else Jesus says. And by the way, this scripture in Matthew chapter seven is one of the scriptures that scares me so much because I don't want to get before Jesus one day and hear him say, Get away from me, you evil do it, because I never knew you. That's some no, I want him to know me completely, he knows my name, like Tasha Cobb says. He does, he knows your name. He does he does, he does, he does, and he knows your heart. You know, some people talk about God knows my heart, and I'm like, Yes, he does, and that's a scary thing, it should scare you because he does. What are you doing about that? Because he sees what the essence of who you are. How are you repenting? Repentance means changing of heart, changing of mind, changing of action. So, what happens when we repent? We're we're breaking through. It's like we're we're taking we're pulling, like if you were using an analogy again, we're quicksand, we're taking the stick that someone is putting out to us and trying to pull ourselves out of the quicksand because that's repentance. It's us deciding, okay, I don't want to stay here anymore. I don't want to choose to be in denial anymore because it is a choice, because I'm closing my eyes and I don't want to see truly who I am. I'm calling you to open your eyes up so you can really see. In hopes that you change. And in order for you to grow closer to God, we have to see, we have to change. We can't remain the same. It's scary when somebody says, like, I'm I'm who I am, and that's it. I can't change, I'm too old for this. I'm too old, I'm not gonna change. Oh boy, y'all. You're never too old to change. The brain is constantly, it's a muscle, it's constantly changing, but you have to practice it, you have to mold it. That's a part the brain is connected to the mind, the mind and the brain. I remember reading a book by Caroline Leaf. Check her out, y'all. She's an amazing neurologist. But reading her book, and she it was amazing to see how the mind is connected to the brain, and the brain controls all the rest of the body. Imagine that's why in Romans talks about be renewed, be transformed by the renewing of your mind. By the renewing of the mind. But you cannot be transformed by renewing your mind if you think that there's nothing to change, if you think that you're okay. You can't. So now I'm calling you guys to really examine yourself, truly examine where you are. Let's take off the mask, let's remove the mask because we all can put on the mask and we want other people to see outside. We can all play church, think that everything is okay, want everybody to see us as something that we're not really, but we put on these clothes to look a certain way when we go out to church because we don't want people to really see what's going on in our homes or what's really going on in our hearts and our lives. Let's take off the mask. But the here's the thing, though, not an and I'm gonna add an and, not a but. I don't want to nullify that because we have to take off the mask. And also, we have to have in our lives people who are safe that we can confess our sins as walks with us, so we can have these true conversations with, so that we can change and not stay the same, so that when you see other people, they can look at you and say, Oh look, you're different. And you can I tell people, I can smell fakeness. Why? Because I've been working on myself to be authentic, I want to be real, and sometimes I'm real, I'm real to the point of scary other people when they talk to me because I'm doing a counter culture, I'm doing something that's different than where I was before, the opposite of where I was before. Because that's what it means to repent. Repent is not a 360. You know, if y'all know me, I was a math teacher at one time, and it irritates me when people say a 360 because 360 is a circle. That means you're going back to where you were before. It's a 180, which is a half circle. It means you're at another, you totally at a different point than you were before. All right, let's go on now. I'm sorry, I had to go on and share that with y'all real quick, but I want to go on now to Revelation 3, where I was going before. Revelations chapter 3, and in verse 15, it says, I know your deeds. This is Jesus talking, right? I know your deeds that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other. So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I am about to spit you out of my mouth. You say I am rich, I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing, but you do not realize that you are wretched and pitiful, poor, blind, and naked. Y'all hear that? You say I am rich. A lot of us are saying we are rich, we we acquire all this wealth. I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing. But this is what Jesus said. But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked. Wow, a lot of times we try to hide behind our wealth, thinking that we're okay, but you're not realizing the detriment of your heart or the detriment of your soul right now, where you really are right now before God. Jesus is saying you are naked, pitiful, poor, wretched, and blind, blind. Close your eyes and not. Really wanting to see who you really are. Come on, y'all. It's time to wake up as an individual, as a part of churches, as churches, as a country, it's time to wake up. It is time to wake up, to come out of the falsities that we are allowing in our lives, that we are believing, because if I believe the truth, and if I really truly live the oh in obedience to the word of God, then it means I had to admit that something is wrong with my walk. And that's okay to admit. I had to admit that. That's why I'm talking to you like this. I'm doing all I hope you guys feel the love. Because I'm talking you like to you like this because I love you, because I know where you were and where I was, or where you are, maybe right now, where you are right now. Because where I was, I was wretched, pitiful, poor, and blind, naked. I didn't really see that though. I didn't see it because I was fooling myself. At 23, I decided to go to New York because God put in my heart to go to New York. He told He told me that that's where He wanted me to move to. And He placed me in the hands of Christian people, true disciples, so that I could study the Bible to really see what it meant to be a disciple of Jesus, what it meant to be a true Christian. And when I studied the Bible to look at it for myself, I didn't take the word of other people like I was a Berean, like it talks about in the book of Acts. I was a Berean. Let me read it for myself to really understand what I am being called to do because it was a calling. Jesus was calling me. God was calling me and gave me over to his son. I can toss about it in John. God saw me walking down that dirt road, saw me feeling lost because I was coming to this point of realizing that how far away I was from God is a gift from God to be able to realize where I really was at. That is a gift. How far your sins have left you or led you away from Him. That is a gift, y'all. But I pray for your heart to be humble so that you can see it. And it's a gift, so you can see truly where you are because pride leads us into not seeing where we truly are, which connects back to spiritual style nature. And also we can follow the patterns of our family or our church culture. We can think that we're we're okay because everybody else is doing the same things that we're doing, but just because everybody else is doing the same thing you're doing doesn't mean that it's right. It doesn't. Where do we find what is right? Not who's right, but what is right. If you are a believer of Jesus and you're saying you're a disciple of Jesus, and we find what is right through looking at the Bible. By being obedient, not taking it out of context, so like I said before in another episode, but reading it for what it is and applying it for your life, not putting in parts. Y'all, I was looking on Facebook one day and I saw something that was very disturbing. And I wish I remember the name of this bishop. But there is a bishop out there that's claiming to be a Christian, and but he says he's a gay bishop. And he says that there are parts of the Bible that he's taken and he could see how the Bible is not against homosexuality. That is a lie straight from Satan, y'all. The Bible is against sexual morality and homosexuality. Notice how put both of them the same way sexual morality and homosexuality. The Bible speaks against those things. Why am I saying this to you? Because I love you and I want you to see what is the truth. Y'all, the world has taken what is good and now it's seen it as evil, and now what is evil is now seen as good. This world is backwards. And Isaiah prophesied about that. It's time for us to wake up to really see the truth, and it's not being a um a bigot or nothing like that. Y'all are not trying to say that. It's about what is the Bible saying about how you are living your life? What is it? And are you willing to change? Sexual morality is a sin. I told y'all to go back to Galatians chapter five. And anybody who, if you're going to different churches and they're not calling you on that, you need to leave because you need to be called out on how you live in your life. A lot of people are appeasing you that it's not love. Love speaks the truth. Galatians chapter 5 and verse 19, it says, The acts of the sinful nature are obvious. Such morality, impurity, debauchery, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, envy, and drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. You will not. And it's important for you to really understand this. It says it here, you will not inherit the kingdom of God if you're continuing to live in that life. That's why I'm calling you to repent. Spiritual stagnation says it's okay for you to live that way, and you're gonna inherit the kingdom. That's a lie. No, that's not the truth of God. We have to change. That means you're spiritually numb too when you're walking around thinking that it's okay to do the things that you've been doing and not feeling convicted. Go back and listen to my other podcasts on conviction and condemnation. Hopefully, it wakes you up. Because in order for change to happen, you have to really see it. Numbness disconnects us from the emotions that we need to do the changes that we need to do. I want to encourage you to really examine your life. Y'all, I gotta tell you this other scripture. The Spirit's telling me to share this with you too. Let me find it. Hold on. All right, come with me to Revelation chapter 21. And I want to encourage you to read the book of Revelation if we haven't read it before. So Revelation chapter 21, and in verse, let me start in verse 6. He says, This is Jesus speaking again. He said to me, It is done. I am the Alpha and the Mega, the beginning and the end. To him who is thirsty, I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God, and he will be my son. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderous, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts as witchcraft, the idolaters, and all liars, their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death. Notice it says all liars, because sometimes we can say, I just told a white lie. No, a white lie is a lie. He's saying all liars, all these things will end up in the second death, which is the burning sulfur. This should scare you, it scares me. This should make you check your life and see where you really are. Now, I want to encourage you. All of this, God is telling us all of this because He loves us. If you go back to the Old Testament and you can start in Exodus and even Numbers and Leviticus, Deuteronomy, God is telling them, I'm sending you into land, Canaan land, right? And I'm giving you milk and I'm giving you the land, the greatness of all the land. I'm giving this to you, and these are the commands that you are to follow in order for you to remain in this land. Then he says, and if you do not, these are the consequences that you will receive if you do not obey me. And he lays out all the consequences that they will receive if because of their disobedience. What happened, y'all? Y'all go back and read 1 Kings, 2nd Kings Chronicles. Go back and read it. Even judges, they disobeyed it. Even though God laid out all the things that we were supposed to, that they were supposed to do, I'm talking about Israel, that they were supposed to do in order to remain with him, in order to remain his people and his grace. He laid it out. He said, Obey me, do these things, and you will remain with me. But their hearts turned towards the idols of the world, the idols of the nations that was around them. They allowed bad company to corrupt good character. They allowed people in their lives and to follow that that led them to astray. Even Solomon, who was the wisest of all kings, married a thousand wives, had a thousand wives, seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines. All of the 700 were women from all other nations who worshiped all these other gods. Why am I telling you all this? Because if he who was wise and God has given him this wisdom, he wrote Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and knew God and walked with God and saw God and all the essence of who he was. But was enticed by all the other idols because who he aligned himself with. Didn't he listen because I'm assuming that there were other prophets that tried to warn him about what he was doing. He didn't listen. He even knew what the scroll said because God said, do not intermarry the other nations around you, because they would lead you in worshiping other idols. But that's what America has done. That's what the lukewarm, the watered-down Christianity has done. It's kind of like watering in some of God's word, but then putting in the idols from all the other nations that's around us. Following other people, following what we want to do, loving lovers of selves, loving of what we want versus what God is telling us to do. That's why He's saying the second death, the sexual morality, idolatry, the liars, that that's all a part of self. We idolize ourselves. If you're viewing it through your own lenses and seeing the world through how you want to see that, and which is opposite of how God sees it, I want to encourage you to look at the scriptures to see how God is seeing what is happening right now in the world. And let's confront the way that you're seeing right now what's happening in the world, the way you are living your life right now. Let's confront that. But you've got to look at the scriptures to see it for yourself and check yourself. Hold up, if God is singing this, where's my life right now? If you are, let's go back to session morality. If you are sleeping with someone that you're not married to, if you're living with someone and you're not married to them, what does God say about that? And if you're choosing to stay in that situation, who are you following? You're following yourself, which means you're following a form of idolatry. Because we can make ourselves an idol, we can make our own opinions an idol, we can make our own desires an idol, we can make what the world thinks it's okay and idol. Because the world is saying it's okay to have sex aside the marriage, it's okay to live with someone before you get married. That's what the world is saying, but God is saying that it's still sexual morality and that is sin. Which one are you gonna follow? Again, going back to I want to end with the same scripture I started off with in Matthew chapter 7. But I'm gonna start in verse 21 again. It says, Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven. But only he who does the will of my father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and perform any miracles? Then I would tell them plainly, I never knew you away from me, you evil doers. You guys, if you change and repent, if you examine your life and really see where you are before Jesus and repent and live according to what he's telling us to live, being obedient to his word, then we won't get before the throne that day and he won't say this to you. He will say, Well done, my good and faithful servant. Oh, I don't want to hear him say that to me. Well done, my good and faithful servant. Join me in that, y'all. Examine your life, see where you are, don't allow denial to stop you from living the truth, what Jesus is calling you to live. Being obedient to his word. Don't allow your family patterns or what you've learned, the traditions of your family, that's opposite of what the Bible is telling you to do, to lead you from not being obedient to what God is telling you to do. Don't allow your church culture that may be opposite of what the Bible is telling you to do, to lead you away from being obedient to God. Be the rebel, be the change maker that God is calling you to be wherever you are in this space in your life right now. Yeah.
