Freedom begins where denial ends.

In this episode, we explore what it truly means to come out of denial and step into the life God has for us. While denial may temporarily shield us from pain, it also keeps us from experiencing the healing, freedom, and intimacy that God desires. Facing the truth takes courage—but it is also the beginning of transformation.

Together, we'll discuss the biblical path of confession, repentance, and humility, and how these are not acts of shame but invitations into God's grace. As we bring our lives into the light, we discover that God doesn't meet us with condemnation—He meets us with mercy, forgiveness, and the power to change.

We'll also examine what Scripture teaches about truth as the doorway to freedom through John 8:31–32, Psalm 32:3–5, 1 John 1:5–10, and James 1:13–18. These passages remind us that God calls us to walk in the light, to take responsibility for our choices, and to trust that His truth always leads to life.

If you've found yourself hiding behind excuses, minimizing your struggles, or feeling stuck in unhealthy patterns, this episode will encourage you to take the courageous first step toward freedom. You don't have to keep pretending. God's invitation is simple: come into the light, receive His grace, and discover the freedom that only truth can bring.

The truth may be difficult to face, but in Christ, it is never something to fear. It is the doorway to healing, restoration, and a deeper intimacy with the God who loves you completely.

SPEAKER_01

Hey you guys, and thank you so much for joining me on today's podcast, Abundling Love Podcast, where we have been speaking about or talking about denial and how to overcome denial in order for us to grow deeper in intimacy with God. I'm wondering how are you feeling about this podcast? What has been coming up in you as you listen to it and how is this impacting your life? If you can, please email me at loveabundantly ministry at gmail.com and let me know your thoughts. And I'm also going to create a spreadsheet or form so you guys can fill it out for me that way. Because I'm really curious to know about how you're doing. And as a mental health therapist, I want to just check in with you. I'm a mental health therapist and a pastoral counselor. I want to check in with you to see how you're doing. And I also want to invite you to Abundantly Love Circle, which we're going to be sending out emails to you guys once we get your email and we get information so we can send you the information that we need to have in order to join us in the webinar. And also to just walk with us in this journey or on this journey towards intimacy with God. Now, as I shared with you guys before, y'all, this is something that I've gone through. This is what I'm talking to you, it's not something that is um, I'm just saying, let me just put this out on you that I haven't worked through myself. And I said time and time again how this is incredibly hard to talk about because denial is something that I've struggled with over my years and I've had to fight to fight through it. But denial is something you can't really fight through if you're not really seeing and acknowledge it. And I thank the Holy Spirit for revealing to me the areas of my life that I've been in denial in, and also my friends that I've had in my life that have challenged me with my viewpoints of myself or my viewpoints of other people or the world or whatever. And it has helped me so much to really change to grow. So if you've been listening to this podcast and you don't have people in your life that you are that are allowing you or that you are open to allowing them to challenge you and to call you higher in your walk with God, I would encourage you to pray about that. Pray about those who you want to walk with. You know, some people I've heard like, I don't really want anybody in my life, you know, and and people that say, Whatever it goes on with me, I like to, I don't really trust people like that. And you know, you can hear all the other excuses. But here's the thing Jesus had his three. Think about it. Jesus being the son of God, who was with God in the beginning, who came down to walk on this earth to show us what it looks like to live to please our Father. As he was walking, he invited three to be closer to him. Even though he had this 12, he had those three that came into the room with him when he raised that girl from the dead, or he had those three that was with him on the mountaintop when he when Moses and Elijah came and spoke to him. He had those three who was with him in the Garden of Gethsemane. Him being the son of God still had those three that he wanted to be intimately close to him, to see him for who he was. Even though they could see him as the son of God, they were able to recognize him and all the things he was doing, but it was an intimacy that he had with those three: Peter, John, and James. Peter ended up leading the church, James was eventually killed, and John ended up writing first John and Revelations. So imagine the closeness that they had with John being able to write that he was the disciple that Jesus loved, and first John being able to write about love. Imagine that closeness. Now, who are we to not allow people in our lives? We're not Jesus. I ain't Jesus, you're not Jesus, but we're trying to imitate him, and a part of imitating him is allowing those people in your life. So I want to encourage you to do that. Pray about it, pray about it. You know, in Proverbs, it talks about a wise person who chooses friends carefully. So you just don't want anybody in your life because you want someone who can feel safe with. I want to encourage you to read this book called Safe People. It's by John Thompson and Henry Cloud, who also wrote Boundaries, and they talk about what it looks like to be a safe person and what has stopped you from allowing people in your life that are not safe and what's in you that you need to work through so that you won't have to do that again. So read that book, Safe People and Boundaries too. But at the same time, pray for God to bring in your life the ones that He wants to walk with you in this journey. Because as we you listen to this podcast, I got a whole different another series we're gonna be talking about later on in the year. But it can get hard if you're not having someone to walk with you. And I'm doing this intentionally because I think we need to face these hard things in order for us to see the areas in our lives that's blocking us from really seeing God for who He is. If we don't face it, if we don't call a spade a spade, then we're not able to change. We're just gonna go on coasting in our lives, thinking that everything is okay. But then something may happen to shake you up, to see okay, everything is not okay. Let me change. And I pray that it does happen like that, so that you're not living in falsities to the rest of your life. You know, in Isaiah talks about, and even Jesus says this to the Pharisees, it's like he was showing them and telling them, like, I am the Son of God, giving them examples of who he really was, but they couldn't see and they could never hear it. Why couldn't they see and why couldn't they hear? I believe that it's because of their pride and their unwillingness to want to see it. Denial. Denial is the unwillingness to want to see it, which connects back to pride, which we talked about in several episodes. It's this denial, this block, like this this fervent, unyielding, unyielding grass that you have on what you truly want to believe that closes your eyes from really seeing what is true. I pray for you to release that grass off of whatever it is that you're holding on to fervently, that you've been believing all these years that may not be the truth, to open up to really see what is the truth in Jesus, what is the truth about who you are. You know what? Let me pray right now, Lord God, Father, you are the Holy One. You are Alpha and Omega, you are the beginning and you're in the end. Father, you have rolled out each one of our lives before one day even existed, Father God. And I pray for us to get out of your way. Help us to get out of your way so that we can see ourselves truly through your lenses, Father. Help us to see the things in our characters that are not like you. God, guide us in the humility, Father, that we need in order for us to walk humbly with you, like it says in Malachi. God, help us, Father God, to please you. Help us to want to seek you with all our hearts and to find you, Father God, when we're seeking you honestly so we can see you, Father, for who you really are, and not through the lenses of what we want you to be, but for who you are, God. Help us to examine the things in our lives, God, that we may think is okay. But for you, Jesus, for you, Father, you're saying, No, you're in sin. No, change these things because you're not pleasing me. God, help us to hear you on that great day, God. I want all that are listening to me, Father God, all that's listening and following this podcast, or following this ministry, on all of us that be before you on that day and hearing you say, Well done, good and faithful servant. Father God, only through you can this be done. I love you. Thank you for blessing this time. Thank you for opening the ears, opening the mind so they can hear and they can see themselves clearly. And thank you for speaking through me, through your Holy Spirit, so that whoever listens to this podcast hears you, Father, and removes me out of the way, and they can really hear you speak to them, Father. Only through you can it be done. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen. All right, today, y'all, what we're talking about is the topic for the day is the courage, the courage to overcome denial, the courage to face the truth about you. It takes courage to face the truth about who you are, it takes courage to face the reality of what's going on in your life. And so we're gonna be answering or going through several things today, like what it means to come out of denial. We're gonna talk about that, and then we're gonna talk about confession, repentance, and humility, and we're gonna also talk about the truth as a doorway to freedom. Yeah, I've been encouraged to have different conversations with some of my friends and who've been listening to this podcast and how they are seeing it and impacting them. Now, I was on the phone with someone yesterday and were saying how it's hard to face the truth of what's going on within them, but they realize that in order for them to overcome the denial, they have to face the truth. I was also talking to somebody, they were saying, say it's not the Nile, like the Nile River in Egypt, but it's denial. And it was a joke. I know, Corny, whatever. But it's denial that we have to face and be have the courage to face, right? In order for us to overcome. So, what does it mean to come out of denial? Honestly, as I said on another podcast, I think of denial as being a cloud that's covered over your mind. The same way I see pride as something that's covered over your mind and covering over your heart. It's something that's the cloud that only honesty and honest prayer can help break through it. But you have to see. I woke up and I honestly was telling y'all, when we grow up in abusive households or we grow up in trauma, we create this space of denial what really is happening around us. But it takes you coming out of that environment to something new and being faced and slapped in your face on it, like it happened to me, to wake up and say, Hold up, no, this is what it really was. This is what it really was. And I'm grateful to God that He woke me up to help me to see, okay, no, that was trauma that you experienced. No, that wasn't the way life should have been. This is what you grew up in, but it's not how it should be right now, and this is how it's impacting you right now, and how you view men, or how you have in your relationships, or how you are easily angry about certain things at times. I had to address those things in my heart, but I wasn't able to address it if I was just thinking that this is being comfortable in it, or just thinking that it was okay, or just dismissing what I grew up in. In order to come out of denial, we have to face the reality. I shared with you guys before when Isaiah 43, it talks about how when you go through the rivers, when you walk through the fires, when you go through these things, you will not be overcome by them because the Lord your God is with you as you go through it. And I love that part where it says in Isaiah, it says in 43, it says, Because I love you, I will give these people in this change from you. God loves us so much that He's willing to walk with us through this journey, through this fire of recognizing who we really are, so that we can come out on the other side. The courage, basically, y'all, the courage is being able to walk with the Father and seeing, hold up, this is where I'm at, recognizing who I am. It takes courage to be honest with yourself, it takes courage to recognize this is what my life was before what I went through, the trauma I went through, and this is how it's impacting me right now. That awareness that we talk about in mindfulness practices, how that awareness to see this is what it is, or this is what it was, and then the acceptance component without the judgment, all of that is courage. Because that's the only way we can get to change. That's the only way. So to come out of denial, it means, first of all, seeing, being aware of where your life is, recognizing how your choices have impacted your life, recognizing how your viewpoint of God may be skewed based on your experience, and allowing your allowing other people in your life to challenge you with it. But as long as it's connected back to the truth of the Bible, not based on people's opinions, but based on what the Bible says, and not like I said, take it, pick it and choose in scriptures, but based on and keeping it in context of what it means, right? So confession, confession, talking about this is what my thoughts are, this is what my life is, helps you break through the denial. Y'all, let's look at some scriptures. I want to look at John 8 right now. John 8 in verse 31 to 32. You know, before we do John 8, I want to be no, let's go ahead and do John 8, 31, 32. Let's go ahead and do that. It says to the Jews who have believed him. I'm reading the NIV version. Jesus said, If you hold to my teachings, you are really my disciple. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. Notice that word hold. I'm holding my fist together, you're gripping it, right? Like I'm holding on to this glass. What happens when I let it go? It'll fall to the ground. That's what we do sometimes when we do when we say we're living our lives by the Bible, or we're being disciples. If we're not holding to it, we let go of the word of God and we're following what? Our own mindsets, our own belief systems, or whatever it may be. You fill a blank in for yourself. But when you hold to the word of God, that's gonna impact you and lead you to be true disciples. This is what Jesus says. Hold on to my teachings. What do we find his teachings in the Bible? You are really my disciple when you do that. Then he says, and this is the caveat to it, then you will know the truth. Some people are like, Well, how do I know the truth? I've been asked that question before. People ask me, How do you know what is true? And I said, if you hold to the scriptures, then you know what is true. If you're not holding on to it, then you're not gonna know what is true. That's just the truth of it. No, my I can talk to you till my face turns red about what I believe. But if you are not holding on to it, then it's null and void. You're not gonna really care about what I believe, you're not gonna believe it if you're not living it. So I want to encourage you guys to really hold on to the truth of what God has said about who He is, to the truth of the Word of God. Then you will know the truth. The truth will set you free. Free from what? Denial. The truth will set you free. Free from denial. Now, in this space, right? So in this space, it takes honesty. It takes you really seeing, have I been holding on to the truth? Check your life. Go back and listen to other podcasts because I talk a lot about sin. Because we can close our eyes and we say the wording today, and I hate this today, how people have been watered down sin. They say, Oh, I just made a mistake without calling it what it is. I sinned. Let's be real, let's be honest about it. No, I sin. Let's call it, like I said earlier, call a spade a spade. I sinned. The only way to really change and break through a denial is saying exactly what it is. I was in sin when I did this, I was in sin when I did that. Call it what it is. Don't sugarcoat it, don't try to walk around it and say, no, I was just, you know, it wasn't really what it was, and I just made a mistake and I didn't really. No, call the spade space. Hey, you sinned. I was lustful, I was impure, I was in sin when I did that. I was you fill a blank in, right? When you do that, that helps you in your confession because you're not watering things down, and also repentance because in order to repentance is change your mind, change your heart, and change your action. If we're watering things down and sugarcoating, how is that changing your mind? How is that changing your actions and changing your behavior? You're just giving excuses. I made a mistake, okay. I'm a I'm human. Oh, we're gonna make mistakes. Yeah, we are human, and at the same time, we can call sin what it is, so that we can choose to not fall into the same pattern. Let's go here to this scripture. I we need to look at this, y'all. I'm gonna go just two scriptures right now, Psalms 32, and Psalms 32, and in verse 3 to 5. Break out in song one day. Psalm 32 and verse 3 to 5. It says, Then I acknowledge my sin to you. Catch that. I acknowledge my sin to you. I was aware of my sin to you. I didn't sugarcoat it, I didn't say it was a mistake. I acknowledge this is what I did, right? I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord, and you forgave the guilt of my sin. Notice that I will confess my guilt to the Lord, and you forgave the guilt of my sin. And and you, God, forgave the guilt of my sin because I acknowledged this is what it really was, and I didn't try to sugarcoat it. This is David speaking. David, who had sex with Bathsheba, who was married to Uriah, who was one of the hit, who was a Hittite, who was one of the 30, y'all, because um David had 30 men that was what that was really close to him, that were warriors that fought for him and uh uh amazingly, but he went off and had an affair with Bathsheba and had Uriah, this guy killed, and then tried to cover it up by lying. Then he had to be confronted by the prophet Nathan to say, Hold up, you are the man who did this. Guess what? David was in denial by trying to cover up those things, but then when he was confronted by the prophet to say, Hold up, no, you are wrong. He then fed up and said, No, I am in sin. I need to change. How many of you guys have people in your life that would confront you on your sin? We need that in our lives. We need someone to be like be our prophet and say, Hold up, no, you're wrong with doing this over here. That's not like God. You're wrong when you're sleeping with someone that is married, you're wrong when you stand in somebody else, sit with somebody that is not your husband or not your wife, and you haven't set outside of marriage. You're wrong with those things. How many of you guys have people in your life that calls you out on that? And then when they do, you don't say fight them. Because here's the thing you're fighting them because you're in denial, because you want to do what you want to do. That's connected. Desires and doing what you want to do is connected to denial, ignoring the truth of how you're really living your life. All of that is connected to denial. But in order to break through that, we have to see okay, I am following my desires right now. And then at the same time, what does that mean if I'm following what I want to do? That means I'm being Lord over my life and Jesus is not Lord anymore. Be honest about that. When we're seeing that we're disciples of Jesus, we're seeing that Jesus is Lord over our lives. But if I'm choosing to follow what I want to do, to live in my desires and doing what I want to do, and ignoring the profit that God brings in my life, saying, Hold up, the way you're living right now is wrong. What you just did right there was wrong, and then you're trying to justify it because that's what you want to do, then you're not being a disciple. You're following, following, you're being Lord over your life. Choosing what you want to do. You cannot say that you're a disciple of Jesus then. He is not Lord. You are Lord. And in fact, you're following somebody else. I said that earlier, you're following Satan. Said on a couple of podcasts, we have two masters, two people we can follow, either Satan or God. One is going to be your master. If you're in the world, Satan is your master. That means you're choosing to follow what you want to do, following your desires, following the flesh, all those things. Who's the master in that? Satan. He's your puppeteer. But when we follow and submit to God, submit to his spirit, be baptized into God into Christ for the forgiveness of our sins, then we're allowing God to be our master. We're being slaves to him. We want him to do what he wants us to do. He is being our Lord. We can choose, but even here's the thing, y'all. We can choose to be a disciple of Jesus, and then at some point in your walk, you can decide, hold up, I want to go back and take this back. Catch that. Check your life right now. If you've been a disciple for many years, or even if this is a new walk for you, and you're saying you're a disciple and you're following Jesus, but then there's a part of your life that you're holding on to, and he's you're saying, Oh, this is my part. Check that. There's a part of you that that denial is there, even though you admitted certain things, but the denial can still be there because you're trying to hold on to this part and not let it go. You're denying that you you admit you're saying I gave it over, but no, there's no you didn't give it over. Because you're trying to hide it and hold on to it and manipulate it according to what you want it to be done, what you want to be done. Right. So let's go to the next scripture in first shun. First shun chapter one. Again, we're still talking about confession and repentance. First shon chapter one. It says, and y'all, if you listen to other podcasts, I have been having a cold. I'm feeling much better. My throat is much more clear, but I'm still congested because I have signs and allergies. But anyway, let's go ahead to 1 John chapter 1 and in verse 5 through 10. The title up at the top, it says walking in the light, right? It says, This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you. God is light. In him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him, yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light as he is in the light, we have fellowship with the one with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make we make him out to be a liar, and his word has no place in our lives. Catch that. If, if, if, if then statements, right? But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with him, with others, and with the blood of Jesus. And this blood of Jesus, his son, purifies us from all sins. If now, notice that it says, if we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, though, we lie and do not live by the truth. That's a part of denial. If we claim that we have fellowship with God and still walk in the darkness, darkness still walking in your sins. Go to Galatians 5, you can look at that, and you can even put in sins and concordance, and you can look up it's a whole list of sins. If you're still walking in that way, then you're in darkness and you're lying to yourself. It takes us to confess our sins, it takes us being honest with where we are. It takes us with being honest with where we are, in order for us to walk in the light. Notice it says here, but and let me go back to this, and do not live by the truth. Going back to what Jesus says, He is the way, he is the truth, and the light. He said, if you hold to my teachings, then you will know the truth. So if we're not, if we're walking in darkness, we're walking in our sins, then we're not holding on to the truth, we're not holding on to Jesus' teachings, which means we're not gonna know the truth, which basically means we're walking in denial, we're walking in falsities, we're walking in lies. I said this to one of my clients, I said this to my clients before. A lie can become our truth because if we if we believe it so much, of how much we believe it. So we can tell ourselves something over and over again, and that thing become, even though it's a lie, the more you tell yourself over and over again, it becomes your truth, even though it's a lie. That's how denial can be. It becomes this truth to us because we're saying it to us to ourselves over and over again, but it's still a lie. We can say to ourselves that we're a Christian, that we're disciples, we're living our lives for Jesus. Jesus knows my heart, he loves me, but then we're out here and pure, we're having sex outside of marriage, we're homosexual, or we're lying, we're gossiping, or we're drunk, or we're cursing, we're you can orgies, or you can fill that blank in, wherever it may be. But all of that is lying to ourselves and not walking in the truth of what God called us to be. Y'all, we're in darkness when we're doing that, but God is saying, if you if you decide to walk in the light and see it in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus is Son, that means if we are confessing our sins, if we're bringing to the light the things that's going on in our hearts and our lives, and we're repenting, that means changing our hearts, changing our minds, and changing our actions, then we are walking in the light. We're walking in intimacy with God. This is the journey towards intimacy that we've been talking about. This is the purpose of my podcast, is helping you to first examine what is blocking you from going deeper in intimacy with God. Let's call it space, let's get it in the open and now let's try, let's push through it so we can now get walked towards intimacy. In order to get to that intimacy point that you want to get to, we have to confess our sins. We have to be honest about what's going on in our lives, we have to be transparent, be humble, having that humility that allows people to come in your life and challenge you with where you are in your life so that you can grow closer to God. Y'all, a friend loves you by speaking the truth. And Proverbs says, Enemies multiply multiplies kisses. An enemy multiplies kisses, but wounds from a friend can be trusted. When you allow someone in your life that are truly a friend, they're not gonna just tell you everything to please you. They're gonna see your life and they're gonna call you on it and say, hold up, that's not like Christ. That's not like God. That's when we're talking about accountability, accountability partners. A friend is supposed to be your accountability partner when they see you, they're walking closely with you, they can call this stuff out. But do you have the humility to accept it? I know sometimes you may get defensive and say, hold up, no, because that's what denial does. It leads you to be defensive. But no, humble out. But if you are defensive, that friend of yours shouldn't shrink back. Love them enough to continue to speak the truth, even though you may see the defensive posture in them. Still continue to love them, speak the truth in love, fight for them. It's like in Jude talks about snatching people from the fire. In order to snatch people for the fire, you've got to fight for their souls. And that's what you're doing when you're loving them by speaking the truth to them, not allowing them to continue in this denial. But sometimes, again, you people who are unyielding, not humble, don't want to wake up to see it, you're gonna have to let them go. Let them go through the fire in hopes that they get burned and return back to God, in hopes that their lenses are taken off so they can really truly see this is where you really are before God. You know? All right, let me share one more scripture with you guys, and we're gonna wrap it up in James chapter one. In James chapter one, and this is gonna be our closing scripture. In James chapter one, and in verse 13 to 18. Hold on, almost there. My pages. Here we go. Verse 13 and 18, it says, When tempted, no one should say, God is tempting me, for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when by his own evil desire, he is dragged away by and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and sin when it is full grown, gives birth to death. Don't be deceived, my brothers and sisters, my dear brothers and sisters. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change light shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth that we might be a kind of first fruit of all he created. Do not be deceived, y'all. It says, When tempted, no one should say, God is tempted to me. For God cannot be tempted by evil, it is our desires that's leading us to be tempted, and we have to admit that, not to be in denial, not blaming God for your choices. And that's what we do. We say, God, why did you allow that to happen over here? Why did you do this? Why'd you allow that? Why'd you do this? It's because we chose to date that guy over there. We have we saw the red flags, but it was our decision to date them, and then we get burnt, and then we met at God because we chose to date them. Isn't that conflicting and confusing? God was like, Chick, what's wrong with you? Imagine God's heading at you. But it's like, no, you chose to do that. I've been in that space, like, God, why did you why did you let me date this dude? Why did you let me go through all of this? God's like, you chose to do that. But he allowed it so that he could reveal, bring up in my heart that was there that I didn't even know was there. Then maybe why are you going through what you're going through? Like God is trying to bring up in your heart whatever is there so you can see it and repent of it and then draw closer to him. That's what he's doing, but don't blame him for what you chose to do. Embrace the in Hebrews 12, the discipline. Embrace the discipline because God is the Father who disciplines those that he loves. So he's allowing you to go through whatever it is you're going through to discipline you in hopes that your heart draws closer to him.
