When the ground feels shaky and the news feels relentless, it’s easy to assume the real fight is political, cultural, or personal. We slow down and ask a harder question: what if the battle underneath all of it is spiritual? Dr. Timothy Mann takes us straight to Ephesians 6:10-18, where the call is simple and bracing: be strong in the Lord, put on the whole armor of God, and stand in the evil day.

We talk about why Scripture says our struggle is not against flesh and blood, and how that changes the way we think about enemies, conflict at home, and frustration with the direction of our culture. Instead of letting anger harden into something ugly, we’re reminded that Satan is a real adversary with real “wiles” meaning strategies, crafty schemes, and carefully aimed lies designed to trip us up, drain our courage, and make a wreck of our witness.

Then we walk through the armor of God in practical terms: truth as integrity that holds everything together, righteousness as both Christ’s gift and our daily obedience, faith as settled trust when outcomes are unknown, and salvation as assurance anchored in Jesus alone. If you’ve been feeling tempted, distracted, or spiritually tired, this is a clear call back to the basics that actually keep you standing.

When headlines are filled with violence, when leadership is targeted, when the stability of a nation feels uncertain, it raises a deeper question. How does a Christian stand firm in an evil day? Today, Dr. Mann takes us to Ephesians chapter 6. The Apostle Paul reminds us our battle is not merely political, not merely cultural, but spiritual. And if we're going to stand, we must be properly equipped. Here now is Dr. Timothy Mann.

Ephesians chapter 6, and I'm going to be reading verses 10 through 18. The topic of the morning is standing in the evil day. The Bible says, Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all to stand. Stand, therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace, and above all, taking the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one, and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, praying always, with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end, with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints. And we'll stop here. This is God's word. Standing in the evil day. The Scripture clearly says here in verse 13 that there is an evil day. Every day, truthfully, the calendars is an evil day. Why is that? Well, because we live in a fallen world. We live in a fallen world in which the Bible teaches us that there is a depravity among men that are rampant. Humankind is depraved in and of ourselves, and we have no desire in and of ourselves to seek after God. You say, oh no, I wanted to seek God. I wanted to be saved. Well, if that desire began to happen in you, that's because he had already started working in your life. He began to wake you up to your need and begin to draw you and have a work in your life. That you just don't suddenly wake up one day and say, you know what, I think I'm going to start seeking God today. You will not do that of your own initiative. The Bible clearly teaches that. You are dead in your trespasses and sins. There is none that does good. No, not one. We all have turned aside and like sheep gone our own way. And so we will not pursue God unless He begins to deal with us first. Every day is an evil day because of that. And there's more to come on that as we'll look here in a moment. So the reality is, is we live in the world. We, as 2 Corinthians said earlier, we do walk in the flesh. We're living in this flesh. We're living in this fallen world. There is, in fact, a battle that occurs. We see that. The Bible teaches us, if you're a Christian this morning, the Bible teaches us that there is a struggle that is taking place in verse 12. This struggle is real. The New King James used the word wrestle. It gives the idea of a grappling kind of match. There's this struggle going back and forth. And it's the struggle we are in. It's a struggle that we are engaged in. It is a battle that is taking place. It's a cliche that's been said before, but it is so very true. I believe that American Christians just don't really see it this way, and it's this that the Christian life is not a playground, it's a battleground. Listen, you're not on a cruise ship, you're on a battleship. You understand that? Most of us try to live our Christian life like we're on a cruise ship. And there's a cruise director that's wanting to provide us all kinds of activities that's going to make the experience fun and enjoyable until we reach our port of call and then we'll go on the excursion they have planned for us then. No, you're not on a cruise ship. You're on a battleship. Why? Because you're in a battle. You're in a struggle. You're wrestling. And if you don't experience any struggle in your life, any wrestling in your life individually, spiritually, then you've already lost the battle. You've surrendered. You've given up. The enemy has you right where he wants you. If you experience no struggle in your walk with the Lord. And so there is a battle. We need to acknowledge that. The Bible makes that very clear. There is a battle. As we enter into a walk with Jesus, I think that's why the Lord Himself, when He called His disciples, and when there were those who wanted to follow Him, He told them very clearly, you need to count the cost. You need to understand what you're getting into here. Jesus was the least seeker-sensitive preacher there's ever been. Jesus never said, All you need to do is say this prayer and accept me into your heart. He never said that. In fact, his ongoing evangelistic call was, deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me. Deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me. That's quite different from accept me as your personal Lord and Savior, isn't it? Deny your cross, deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me. And he said, you really need to count the cost before you do this. Because in fact, he who seeks to save his own life will lose it. But he who is willing to lose his own life for my sake will save it. That's genuine discipleship. That's the truth of following Jesus. This is not a cruise ship, it's a battleship. This is not a playground, it's a battleground. And we need to be clear-eyed about that. Every day that we wake up. It's a battle for your children, it's a battle for your grandchildren, it's a battle for the church, it's a battle for the culture. In fact, indeed, it's a battle for the country, it's a battle for the world that is taking place on every front. It's a battle at your work, it's a battle in the school, and we don't need to just lollygag through life. Acting like we're on a cruise ship. Because it's a battle. And we need to be very clear-eyed about that. Not only is it a battle, there is an enemy. I hope you see that. Verse 11 names the primary antagonist in this battle, the primary enemy. Here he's called the devil. That you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. I'll talk about wiles in a moment. But the devil, we see that. But then we also see in verse 12, it goes on to say our struggle, our wrestling match, our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. So we see the devil, but then what we see mentioned for us in the next verse is his demons. The devil and his demons. Now, you say, well, I always thought maybe the devil is a metaphorical representation for evil. You need to understand that is not the case. He is a person, he is real, his other name is Satan. The devil is the word diablos. Satan means slanderer. And so you need to understand that Satan, while originally created by God, he, much like Adam and Eve, in the estate of the original angels, he was created with a will that was free. And he was close to the throne of God. Potentially, possibly even what we would call an archangel. And he realized his own beauty, he realized his own greatness, and he rose up in pride. And he said, I will make my throne above the throne of the Most High. I will ascend the holy hill. And the Bible teaches us that God removed him from his position, from his estate, and he fell in his sin and his pride, and he was corrupted forever. And ever since, the purpose and goal of Satan himself is to take everything that is illegitimately his. He wants to destroy all that is good and right and holy because he hates God and he hates Jesus. And in his rebellion, the Bible in the book of Revelation teaches us that somehow he was able to deceive one-third of the angels of heaven, and they rebelled with him. And now they are in a permanent fallen state along with him, and they are wicked to the core. And the Bible and his sovereignty, and we don't understand why, but the Bible and his sovereignty has allowed Satan some measure of authority over this fallen world. In fact, the Apostle Paul calls him the prince of the power of the air. And the Bible teaches us also that his minions do his business because while Satan is in fact present, he is not omnipresent like God. And so he has this myriad of angels, a third of the angels of heaven, who now are under his assignment and under his control. And they are, according to the Bible here in Ephesians chapter 6, called principalities, which gives this sense of governance, even. Principalities, this rulers of the darkness of this age, spiritual hosts of wickedness in heavenly places. So, folks, don't you laugh at demons. Don't you mock at the idea of the devil or demons. There are such things as demons, and some people, in truth, in fact, are demon-possessed. And in fact, there are some Christians who are professing Christians. While they may not be demon-possessed, they have allowed demonic strongholds to be built in their life, and they are absolutely oppressed and influenced by demonic forces themselves.

The battle that you deal with in your home, the battle that you deal with in your workplace, the battle that you deal with in school, the battle you face in the community, the very battle that is going on in this country is not just people. The scripture says it's not flesh and blood. So that person you hate so much, okay, you're a Christian, not supposed to hate, but let's be honest, you very much dislike them to the ten thousandth degree. Alright? The reality is this that person themselves is not your problem. Your enemy is your problem. Because you don't struggle and battle against flesh and blood. Sadly, that person is under the dominion of Satan. They're under the control of Satan. And they're blinded to the truth. So they're not your real enemy. Your spouse is not your enemy. Your children aren't your enemy. Your boss isn't your enemy. Those lost in the world are really not our enemy. Because we're not battling against flesh and blood. We're battling against Satan. Now you might say, I don't like to hear that because I see what they say and I see what they do. And I get so mad sometimes about what they do and how they're treating people and the direction our culture's going in and the direction our society is going in, the direction our country is going in headlong, with no brakes to stop it, it seems like. So I'm so angry at those people. Well, we understand there's righteous indignation and there ought to be some measure of righteous indignation. The problem is this often our indignation is not very righteous. Usually our indignation becomes quite unrighteous because we end up saying things and behaving and acting like the people we are angry at. And they're not your problem. The problem is the devil and his demonic hordes. What about what they do? Well, look at John chapter 8. I want you to see what Jesus had to say about this. John chapter 8. He's talking actually, interestingly enough, to religious leaders at this point in time. That's the context. But that's not what I want you to see. It is applicable, though, because by the way, everybody that's religious isn't a son of God. Even everybody who claims to be a professing Christian are not born of God. The Bible says in John chapter 8, verse 44, Jesus is speaking here. Do you know how I know it's Jesus speaking? It's because it's in red, anyway. Verse 44, John chapter 8. He's talking to these religious leaders. And he says, You are of your father the devil. Doesn't Jesus know you can't build a church saying things like that? It's not very popular, is it? He says to them, You are of your father the devil. And the desires of your father you want to do. Now, are they responsible? Yes, of course. They will be held accountable before God, before the judge of the universe, for their actions. But the real enemy is the devil. And here's the issue with him. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth. Because there is no truth in him. Not even a little bit. Not even partial truth. There is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own, his own resources, his own essence of who he is. When he speaks, it's a lie. For he is a liar and the father of it. So he's not only a liar, but he's also a murderer. So the very source of deception, the source of murderous intentions is from Satan himself. And our corrupted flesh, our depravity just runs with that because unless someone is saved by God's grace, the Bible says, He is their father spiritually. That's hard to hear, isn't it? But that's the reality about every single unsaved person that you know. Every single non-Christian you know their spiritual father is the devil. That should help us a little bit in how we think about that person. And when we think about how the word of God says, our struggle, we do not wrestle against simply flesh and blood. But we have an enemy. And he has got you, and he's got your family, and he's got this church, he's got anything that stands for right and goodness and godliness, he has got you in the crosshairs of his scope. And he wants to take you out. And he'll do anything he can to do so. And he is quite smart. He's depraved, he's wicked, but he's quite smart. The Bible says he has wiles. That word that's translated wiles in the New King James Version literally means strategies, crafty schemes. He's as old as time itself. He's been around a long time. And he and his demonic forces, they have examined your life from the moment you were born, and they have pieced together God's apparent plan for your life. And he is working every which way from Sunday to try to thwart the will and plan of God in your life. And if he can't stop God's plan, ultimately, he wants to do such in your life. He will institute a strategy, he will put together a crafty scheme, he will watch you and see your patterns and see your proclivities, to see the weakness of your flesh, and he will do everything he can to put temptations in your way and to lie to you and deceive you. He'll lie to you about your wife, he'll lie to you about your husband, he'll lie to you about your children, he'll lie to you about your preacher, he'll lie to you about anybody and everybody who you might ought to have some measure of love and respect for, and he'll instill false beliefs in your mind so that you will begin to have these doubts and you'll begin to He'll lie to you about God. He'll lie to you about the Word, and he'll He'll orchestrate circumstances in such a way that He'll put you in the right moment at the right place where you will begin to walk in your flesh, where you will begin to grieve the spirit, where you will begin to quench the spirit. And when the time is right, when the moment is right, he will pull the rug right out from under you and expose you for the fraud you are. And if he can't take you to hell, he'll at least disqualify you for the kingdom of God and make you a mockery for Jesus Christ. That's his crafty schemes. And in and of yourself, you will not be able to withstand. In and of yourself. So there's a battle, there's an enemy. And we don't need to be naive and foolish about this enemy. His plans and his purposes are manifested in many ways. One way was when a man laid on a roof and attempted to kill Donald Trump. But that plan is manifested multiple times over. In many, many ways. In your home, on the job, in your school, in your community, and you need to be aware of it. So there's a battle, there's an enemy, but there's armor, thank God. So you can stand. You don't have to lose the battle. You don't have to lose the battle. There's a command given in verse 10, and the command in verse 10 can be done for those who are followers of Jesus Christ. Be strong in the Lord. Be strong in the power of his might. That's a reality for every believer. You don't have to give in. You don't have to yield. You don't have to be a victim of Satan's crafty schemes. You can be strong in the power of his might and in the Lord. But because we have this enemy, because there is a battle that's taking place, verse 13 says, Therefore. Therefore, we have this enemy, Satan himself. We have this enemy, the demons themselves. Therefore, take up the whole armor of God so that you may be able to withstand. If you don't take up the armor of God, you don't stand a chance. You will not be able to withstand. You will lose the battle every time in your own flesh, in your own strength, in your own wisdom. You're not smart enough, you're not wise enough, you don't have enough experience in and of yourself to outlast, outstand, overcome Satan. You will lose. Unless you put on the armor of God. But if you put on the armor of God, you can stand. From verse 14 all the way down through verse 16, we see truth, we see righteousness, we see the gospel, we see faith, we see salvation in verse 17, at the beginning of verse 17. This armor, he uses a metaphor of Roman armor that Roman soldiers wore, which the Ephesians would have understood, being under the Roman Empire still at this time, and he worked all the way from the belt, which holds everything together, the entire armament is held together by the belt. And he says, This belt is truth. Truth. What does that speak to? It's not talking about the truth, necessarily, although that's part of it, but this is talking about who you are. This is talking about integrity, honesty, no deceit, no falsehoods. There is an integrity of your life that is real. Spiritually speaking, if you don't have any integrity, everything else will fall apart. Nothing else matters. It's the integrity that holds it together. Examine your life. Is it whole? Is it truthful? Is there deceit? Is there integrity? Righteousness. Breastplate of righteousness. Righteousness, the breastplate obviously protected the vital organs. Spiritually speaking, what protects your life, what protects the vital organs, is righteousness. The righteousness of Christ that you have imputed to you through faith when you trust Jesus as your Savior. But it's not just positional righteousness, ladies and gentlemen. You need to understand it's practical righteousness as well. It's doing right. Living right. Not living against God's word. Not entertaining evil and wickedness in your life. You will not have protection against the enemy if there is not actual practical righteousness in your life. Are you living right? Is righteousness there? Or are you living according to the flesh? Walking with the world. Faith. The shield of faith. We need to be reminded that God himself said, without faith, it is impossible to please God. For he who comes to him must first of all believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him. Hebrews 11, 6. This faith, this settled trust and confidence in God Himself. Not that everything's going to work out exactly like you want it to. That's not faith. Faith says, God, I don't know what you're doing, but I know it's right, I know it's good, and I am trusting you. I'm trusting you. I'm resting in you. And the enemy is not going to put doubt in my mind. It's not going to, he's not going to bring fear into my life. Because I know whatever comes, you are greater than that. You are more powerful than that. Yes, I know Satan has some power, but I know you have all power. No matter what happens. And then this helmet, this helmet of salvation. This helmet of salvation is knowing you are saved. That salvation is the reality of your life. That you have truly repented of Jesus. Or you've repented of your sins and you've placed your faith in Jesus as your Savior and Lord. What He has done for you on the cross, I'm not talking about the fact that you've made mistakes or you've been imperfect, or maybe you've sinned grievously in the past, or maybe even recently. I'm not talking about your failures. I'm not talking about depending on yourself to be saved. I'm talking about are you truly depending on Jesus for your salvation? That you're trusting him, that you're resting in him and him alone. What he did for you on the cross, how he paid the penalty of your sins. He who knew no sin became sin for us so that we might be the righteousness of God, the Bible says. That you're trusting in him and him alone. And you've repented, you've turned away, and I'm turning to Jesus. I've counted the cost. I'm going to deny myself. I'm going to take up my cross and I'm going to follow him all the way to glory.
