Grateful For Freedom

Fireworks can light up the sky, but they can’t set a soul free. As America celebrates 250 years, we take an honest Independence Day pause to ask what freedom really is, where it comes from, and what God calls us to do with it. Speaking as a Christian, a pastor, and a combat veteran, Dr. Timothy Mann reminds us that liberty is a gift from the Lord (James 1:17) and a stewardship that can be used for righteousness or wasted in rebellion.

We talk about gratitude without idolatry: honoring those who served, loving the nation where God has placed us, and refusing to confuse the Kingdom of God with the United States. We also draw a clear line between political liberty and spiritual freedom. A person can live in a free country and still be enslaved to guilt, shame, pride, lust, fear, or unbelief. Jesus’ words in John 8:36 cut through the noise: “If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” That’s the freedom no government can grant and no government can take away.

We also wrestle with what makes a nation healthy. Proverbs 14:34 tells us righteousness exalts a nation, and sin brings reproach. Politics matter, prayer for leaders matters (1 Timothy 2:1–2), and religious liberty matters, but the church must not shrink its mission to partisan aims. A free country needs a faithful church, rooted in truth and anchored in grace, using freedom not as license but as a way to serve through love (Galatians 5:13).

Welcome to Foundations of Truth. I'm Dr. Timothy Mann. Today I want to speak from my heart as a Christian, as a pastor, and as a veteran. This is an Independence Day reflection, but I want to be clear. This is not a political speech. This is not a partisan message. This is not an attempt to confuse the Kingdom of God with United States of America. But Christians should not be indifferent to the nation where God has placed us. We should not be ungrateful for the freedoms we enjoy. We should think biblically about liberty, responsibility, righteousness, service, and the role of the church in a free society. As a veteran, I know what it means to take an oath. I took one, I kept it, and I remain grateful for the privilege of having served this country. But my highest allegiance is not to the flag. My highest allegiance is to Jesus Christ. That does not make me less grateful for my country. It makes me more grounded in how I love my country. I can thank God for America without treating America as ultimate. I can honor the sacrifices of those who served without confusing service with salvation. I can be grateful for freedom, while knowing that the deepest freedom is found only in Christ. That is the balance Christians need gratitude without idolatry, love of country without confusing the kingdom with this country, and a clear understanding that freedom is a gift from God, righteousness is necessary for a nation, and liberty should be used in the service of the Lord.

Freedom As God’s Gift

James 117 says, Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of Lights. Well, freedom is a gift, not a guarantee. I am grateful for freedom. Not because America is perfect, it is not. No nation is. Not because our history is without failure, or our leaders are without weakness, or our people are without sin. That has never been true of any nation under heaven. I am grateful because freedom is a gift, and gifts should never be treated casually. James tells us in the Bible that every good and perfect gift comes from above. Well, that means that the blessings we enjoy are not ultimately self-created. They're not accidents of history. They're not merely the result of human wisdom, military strength, economic power, or political theory. Those things may be instruments, but God is the giver. And when we forget the giver, we eventually misuse the gift. Freedom gives us room to worship, to speak, to gather, to preach the gospel, teach our children, plant churches, send missionaries, broadcast biblical truth, and live with a measure of peace many people in the world have never

A Veteran’s View Of Service

known. That should make us thankful. It should also make us humble. As a veteran, I do not merely think about freedom as a slogan. I think about it as something costly. I think about young men and women who leave home, put on the uniform, submit themselves to discipline, and stand ready to go where they are sent. I think about sacrifice and duty and the seriousness of serving something larger than yourself. Before I was a pastor, I was a soldier. I served in the United States Army. I was a combat engineer. I was a noncommissioned officer. I served during Desert Shield and Desert Storm in the first Gulf War. Military service teaches lessons that do not easily leave you. It teaches that freedom requires responsibility. It teaches that duty matters whether anyone applauds or not. It teaches that an oath is not a small thing. It teaches that some things are worth sacrifice. It teaches a man to know his mission, stand his post, and be faithful whether conditions are easy or whether conditions are hard. And those lessons followed me into ministry. I do not preach the Bible like a drill sergeant, at least I hope I do not. Courage matters. There are moments when you stand because standing is right, even when standing is costly.

Political Liberty Versus Soul Freedom

But as a Christian, I also know this the freedom of a country is not the same thing as the freedom of the soul. A person can live in a free land and still be enslaved to sin. A person can have constitutional rights and still be bound by guilt, shame, bitterness, lust, pride, greed, fear, and unbelief. Political freedom is a blessing, but it cannot save the soul. Only Jesus can do that. Jesus said in the Gospel of John chapter 8, verse 36, therefore, if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. And that is the freedom every person ultimately needs. Independence Day should not only stir patriotism in the heart of a Christian, it should stir gratitude, humility, prayer, and gospel clarity. We can thank God for the country in which we live, but we must never confuse America with the kingdom of God. The blessings of freedom are real, but they are temporary. The freedom Christ gives is eternal. So we should be grateful for our country without making our country our savior. We should honor those who served without turning service into righteousness before God. We should appreciate liberty without forgetting that liberty can be used well or wasted badly. Freedom can be used for righteousness or rebellion. Freedom can be used to serve God or to serve self. Freedom can provide space for truth to flourish or it can become an excuse for moral collapse. A free people still needs a moral foundation. A free country still needs a faithful church. Freedom is a gift, but freedom is not a guarantee. If we want to hand something good to the next generation, we must do more than celebrate the blessings we inherited. We must steward them faithfully. This Independence Day, I am grateful for freedom, grateful for those who served, grateful for those who sacrificed, and grateful for the blessings God has allowed us to enjoy. But most of all, I am grateful for Jesus Christ, the true King, the only Savior, and the one who gives freedom no government can grant, and no government can take away.

Righteousness And National Health

Well, freedom, freedom needs righteousness. So if freedom is a gift, then we need to ask an important question. What kind of people are we becoming with the freedom we have been given? Proverbs 1434 says, Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people. Well, that verse is clear, and it's uncomfortable. It tells us that the strength of a nation is not merely measured by its economy, its military, its technology, its influence, or its political power. Those things matter, but they're not ultimate. Righteousness exalts a nation. Sin is a reproach to any people. That means no nation can sin without consequence. No people can reject truth forever and remain healthy. No society can mock the created order, weaken the family, despise the unborn, redefine morality, celebrate confusion, and expect to flourish without cost. Sin always leaves wreckage in a person, in a marriage, in a family, in a church, in a nation.

Pray For Leaders Keep Gospel First

But I want to be careful here. The answer to America's deepest problem is not merely political. Politics matter because laws matter, leaders matter, courts matter, policies matter, justice matters, order matters, the protection of life matters. Religious liberty matters. The family matters. Christians should not be careless citizens. We should be thoughtful, responsible, prayerful, informed, and engaged where we can. Paul writes in first Timothy chapter two, verses one through two. Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings, and all who are in authority. So we pray for those in authority because God tells us to pray. We pray because leadership matters. We pray because peace and order matter. We pray because the church needs freedom to carry out our mission. But the church, listen, the church must never reduce its mission to politics. The church's calling is higher. We are here to preach Christ. We are here to proclaim the word of the Lord. We are here to call sinners to repentance and faith. We're here to disciple believers, strengthen families, uphold truth, love our neighbors, and bear witness to the kingdom of God.

Why A Free Country Needs Church

Free country needs a faithful church, not a fearful church, not a silent church, not a worldly church, not a church that simply echoes the talking points of the age, a faithful church. One of the great blessings of living in a free country is that the church has freedom to gather, preach, teach, evangelize, worship, disciple, and send. I mean, we can open the Bible publicly, we can call people to Christ, we can teach our children, we can plant churches, we can broadcast the gospel, we can write, speak, publish, and proclaim. That is not a small thing. Many believers around the world do not have that kind of freedom. They gather at risk, they evangelize at cost. They follow Jesus under pressure, the kind of pressure that we may never fully understand. So when God gives the church freedom, the church should use it faithfully. A free church should not become a lazy church. A free church should not become a distracted church. Free church should not become a comfortable church that has the Bible in its hands, but little conviction in its heart. Freedom should not make us careless. It should make us responsible. If we believe the gospel is true, we should proclaim it. If we believe the Word of God is sufficient, we should preach it. If we believe Jesus is Lord, we should say so plainly. And if we believe that righteousness matters, then we should live like it matters. The health of a country is not helped by a weak church. Our nation does not need churches ashamed of Scripture. It does not need churches that apologize for God's design. It does not need churches that replace the gospel with therapy, entertainment, politics, or moralism. Our nation needs churches rooted in truth and anchored in grace. Because truth without grace can become harsh and proud. And grace without truth, well, it becomes sentimental and empty. But truth and grace together give the church a faithful witness in a confused world. This is why genuine faith in Jesus matters for society. When people are truly converted, they do not merely change private religious opinions. Their lives begin to change. Husbands become more faithful, fathers become more present, mothers are strengthened, children are taught, workers become honest, neighbors are loved, the vulnerable are defended, churches serve, communities are helped. The gospel does not save a nation in the way it saves a sinner. Nations do not get born again. People do. But when people are changed by Jesus Christ, that change has public consequences. Righteousness matters. Faithfulness matters. The church matters. We should not waste this freedom. We should not spend all our time arguing about secondary things while people around us are lost. We should not become more passionate about party loyalty than gospel faithfulness. We should not be shaped more by cable news or the internet than by the word of God. A free country needs a faithful church. And a faithful church must keep pointing people to Jesus.

Liberty Is Not License

Well, liberty is not license. Galatians 5.13 says, For you, brethren, have been called to liberty. Only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. Well, that verse is exactly what we need. We live in a time when freedom is often defined as personal autonomy. I do what I want, I decide who I am, I set my own truth, follow my desires, I answer to no one. No authority over me, no limits around me, no God above me, no truth confronting me. But that's not biblical freedom. That is self-rule. And self-rule is not freedom. It's only bondage with better marketing. The Apostle Paul says we have been called to liberty, but we must not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh. See, freedom is not for selfishness. Freedom is for service. Freedom is not the right to do whatever I want. Freedom is the grace-enabled ability to become who God created me to be. Freedom is not ruled by my passions. Freedom is being set free to walk in the Spirit. Freedom is not casting off God's authority. Freedom is living under the good and holy lordship of Jesus Christ. That's why the Apostle Paul says, Through love, serve one another. That's what freedom is for service, love, faithfulness, responsibility. And that is true spiritually, and it should shape how we think about national freedom. If God gives us freedom, we should not use it for pride, sinfulness, selfishness, or forgetfulness. We should use it to honor the Lord, serve our neighbor, strengthen families, preach the gospel, build faithful churches, teach the next generation, and shine light in a dark world. The world's idea of freedom says, I belong to myself. The gospel says, You are not your own, for you are bought at a price. The world's idea of freedom says, follow your heart. The Gospel says, the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. The world's idea of freedom says, No one can tell me who I am. The Gospel says, Your creator has spoken, and your identity is in him. Listen, if we celebrate political freedom while rejecting spiritual freedom, we've missed the point. If we celebrate national independence while remaining enslaved to sin, we have missed the deeper need. If we wave the flag but refuse the lordship of Christ, we are not truly free in the way that matters most. I'm grateful for this country. I am grateful for the privilege of having served. I am grateful for the freedoms that we enjoy. I'm grateful that I can open the Bible, preach the word, gather with the church, and proclaim Jesus Christ publicly. But gratitude should never become presumption. Every blessing carries responsibility. If God has given us freedom, we should use it to honor Him. If God has given us peace, we should not waste it on selfishness. If God has given us opportunity, we should invest it in what matters. If God has given us a voice, we should speak truth with grace. If God has given us churches, we should strengthen them. If God has given us children and grandchildren, we should teach them who God is. We need a freedom shaped by truth.

The Most Important Freedom Question

Now, let me bring this to the most important issue. Maybe you've been listening today, and you are grateful for America. Maybe you love this country. Maybe you have served. Maybe someone in your family has served. Maybe you think deeply about liberty and the future of the nation. Let me say to you, those things matter. But the most important question is not, are you free politically? The most important question is, are you free spiritually? Have you been set free by Jesus Christ? Because you can live in a free country and still be enslaved. You can be enslaved to sin, guilt, shame, bitterness, lust, pride, fear, control, approval, success, money, pleasure, influence, or recognition. But none of those things will give your soul rest. The soul was made for God, and freedom without God eventually becomes emptiness. Jesus did not come merely to improve your life, He came to save sinners. He came to bear our sin. He came to die in our place. He came to rise again. He came to reconcile us to God. He came to set captives free. Not with a political revolution, but with a cross and an empty tomb. The Bible says all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. That includes me. That includes you. Our greatest problem is not outside of us, it is inside of us. We need more. Than freedom around us. We need redemption within us. And that redemption is found only in Jesus Christ. He lived the life that we failed to live. He died the death that sinners deserve. He rose from the grave. And he calls us to repent and believe. To repent and believe on Him as Savior and Lord. Not to add a little religion to our patriotism. Not to use God as a prop for our politics. Not to claim Christianity as a cultural or ethnic identity, but to bow before Jesus as Savior and Lord. That, ladies and gentlemen, is true freedom. When the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. So, this Independence Day, thank God for every good gift. Thank God for freedom. Thank God for those who served. Pray for this country. Pray for our leaders. Pray for our churches. Pray for families. Pray for righteousness. Pray for courage. Pray for clarity. Pray for compassion. But do not stop there. Use your freedom well. Use it to honor Christ. Use it to proclaim the gospel. Use it to serve your neighbor. Use it to strengthen your family. Use it to build up the church. Use it to speak the truth in love. Use it to point people to the one who gives freedom no earthly government can give and no earthly government can take away. As a veteran, as a combat veteran, I thank God for the privilege of having served this country. As a pastor, I thank God for the freedom to preach his word. As a Christian, I thank God most of all for Jesus Christ, the one who saves, the one who reigns, the one who sets sinners free. Freedom is a gift, righteousness matters. A free country needs a faithful church, and every soul needs the freedom only Christ can give.
