Pursuing Peace Under Pressure

Conflict is easy to find right now and if we go looking for it, we will. From 1 Peter 3:11–17, we slow down and ask a better question: what does it look like to seek peace and pursue it when the world feels increasingly hostile to biblical truth?

We talk through why Christian peacemaking is not “peace at any cost,” and why righteousness has to be the foundation for any real peace. Then we lean into Peter’s promise that the Lord’s eyes are on the righteous and his ears are open to their prayers, especially when it feels like enemies have the upper hand. Along the way, Psalm 34 resets our definition of “good days” as days where God helps us in fears, troubles, and afflictions, not just days with comfort and ease.

Next, we move into the heartbeat of this passage: sanctifying Christ as Lord in our hearts. Drawing from Isaiah 8, we unpack how fear of the Lord can conquer every other fear and how that changes the decisions we make under pressure. That leads to practical Christian apologetics: being ready to give a reasoned defense of our hope in Jesus Christ with gentleness and respect, not arrogance. We close with the power of a good conscience and why confession, Bible study, and obedience keep that inner “window” clear so we can stand firm when accusations and persecution come.

Seek Peace And Pursue It

very practical, second half of verse 11. This is the person who would love life and see good days. Let him seek peace and pursue it. Let him seek peace and pursue it. Jesus said it something like this He said, Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God. Now, if you go out and seek trouble, guess what? You're going to find it. It's going to be there waiting on you. Sometimes it'll come tracking you down. But what the Bible teaches is this if we seek peace, we can find it as well. We can find it. Now I have to say something about that because that doesn't mean peace at any price, peace at any cost, just meaning the absence of turmoil or the absence of conflict, because the Bible teaches that righteousness must always be the basis for peace. But what it does mean is this when the Word of God says to me, Let him seek peace and pursue it, what that means is that a believer exercises moderation as he or she relates to people and does not create problems simply because you want to have your own way. That's what that means. Seek peace and pursue it. The apostle Paul wrote in Romans 12, 18, if it is possible, as much as it lies in you, as much as it depends on you, seek peace with all men. I have to tell you, sometimes it's not possible. But at the same time, Romans chapter 14, verse 9, we read that where it also admonishes us to actually work hard. Work hard to achieve peace. To work hard at it. It does not come automatically. Now, after this sermon this morning, this portion of this text, you might want to make an appointment with me this week and come in and ask me this question. You might want to, you know, challenge me and say, Well, Pastor, that's fine, but what if my enemy takes advantage of me? I'm persecuted in my workplace. I'm persecuted in my family. I'm persecuted in my neighborhood. I'm persecuted in the church I attend. What if my enemies take advantage of me? I'm seeking peace, but they're seeking war. What then? Well, I hope you're paying attention to the text. Second part of verse 11. Let him seek peace and pursue it.

When Enemies Push Back

Why? What's the next verse say? For the Lord, for the eyes of the Lord are on the on his righteous. And his ears are open to their prayers. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil. What does Peter do here? Peter gives them assurance that God's eyes are on you, he is watching you. If you are indeed his child, if you're his people, and his ears are open to your prayers. Peter learned this lesson when he tried to walk on water without looking at Jesus. He sank quickly, right? What we have to do is we have to trust God to protect. We have to trust God to provide. Why? Because here's the fact of the matter you can't defeat your enemies, spiritually speaking, in and of yourself. You can't strategize enough, you can't manipulate enough, you can't work it out enough, you can't get enough allies in and of yourself to defeat your enemies to your satisfaction. Why in the world do you think the Lord said, Do not take revenge? Vengeance is mine, says the Lord. I will repay. Why? Because only God can defeat your enemies. Read the Psalms. Read the heart cry of David. Greatest warrior in all of the Bible. And he said, My enemies are surrounding me. They're going to devour me. I'm like a dead dog. I'm done for. He recognized in his own resources the mightiest warrior that Israel had ever seen. Remember? They cried about Saul. Saul has slain his thousands upon thousands, but they cried of David, he's slain ten thousands upon ten thousand. Mightiest warrior. And he recognized me and ten armies can't defeat my enemies. Only the Lord God of Jacob. He's the one in whom I find my help in time of trouble.

What God Calls Good Days

Peter quotes all these statements, by the way, from Psalm 34. Which is would be very profitable for you if you read the entire Psalm. Because when you read that entire psalm, we don't have time to unpack it this morning, but let me just give you a very quick survey. When you read Psalm 34, it describes what God means by good days. I have a different evaluation sometimes in my mind what a good day is. And you do too. Some of you, it's a good day at the beach, good day on the couch, you know, good day whatever, and you know, when things are going good at home or, you know, at work or whatever the case might be, but they're not necessarily days free from problems. Because if you read Psalm 34, the psalmist wrote about fears, he wrote about troubles, he wrote about afflictions, and he even wrote about a broken heart in Psalm 34. But a good day, a good day for the believer who loves life, is not one in which he is pampered, not one in which he or she is sheltered, but one in which he or she experiences God's help and God's blessing because of life's problems and trials. That's a good day when God shows up on your behalf. That's a good day. It's a day in which the believer, I can then at that time can magnify the Lord when I can experience answers to my prayers, when I can taste the goodness of God, and when I can, as we sang about this morning, sense the nearness of God. So let me tell you, the next time you think you're having a bad day and you hate life, read Psalm 34, and you may actually discover you're actually really having a very good day. That God has given you a good day. So we could probably shut down and go home there. That's good stuff. But I've got two more points. Give me a minute.

Sanctify Christ Over Every Fear

If we're going to experience God's best, we have to cultivate love. But secondly, we have to practice the lordship of Christ. Practice the lordship of Christ. That's what verses 13 through 15 is all about. These verses introduce the third main section, really, of 1 Peter, which is God's grace and suffering. God's grace and suffering. They introduce a very important spiritual principle, and that's that the fear of the Lord conquers all other fears. What happens here now is Peter is quoting Isaiah 8, verses 13 through 14. Peter's a good preacher of the word. He uses God's word constantly, all the time. He's quoting Isaiah 8, 13 through 14 to back up his admonition when he says in verse 15, but sanctify the Lord God in your hearts. Now let me let me tell you why it's important. Let me have a moment to have historical context. Here it is. The setting of Isaiah quotation here is very significant because Ahaz, who is the king of Judah in the south, look in your maps in the Bible in the back. He's king of Judah in the south. He faces a crisis because of an impending invasion from the Assyrian army. The kings of Israel, the one to the north and Syria, they wanted Ahaz to join them in an alliance. And so Ahaz, but Ahaz refused. And so what happens is Israel and Assyria, Syria, they threaten to invade Judah. Now behind the scenes, behind the scenes, Ahaz has confederated himself with Assyria. And the prophet Isaiah comes to him and warns him against these kind of ungodly alliances, these scheming strategies, and he urges him, instead of going after these things, the ways of the world, trust God for deliverance. And what he tells him in Isaiah 8.13, he says, Sanctify the Lord of hosts himself, and let him be your fear. Let him be your dread. That's what he tells him. And as believers, we're faced with crisis. We are. And when we're faced with crisis, when we're faced with a crisis of belief, when we're faced with hardships, we're tempted, we're so tempted to give into our fears. And when we give in to our fears, we make wrong decisions. Wrong decisions. But if we sanctify the Lord in our hearts, we don't need to fear people. We don't need to fear circumstances. Because our enemies or our circumstances might hurt us and bring pain to us, they will never harm us. That's what the word said. They will, verse 13, who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good? We can only harm ourselves if we fail to trust God. Generally speaking, people don't oppose us if we do good, but even if they do, he says it's better to suffer for righteousness' sake than to compromise our faith, compromise our testimony. And instead of experiencing fears we face our enemy, we can experience blessing if Jesus Christ is sanctified in our hearts. He says you're going to be blessed. Blessed are you. Happy. When the Lord Jesus Christ is sanctified in our hearts, when he's Lord of our lives, each crisis, each struggle, each problem becomes an opportunity for witness, an opportunity to share.

A Gentle Defense Of Your Hope

He says we're always ready to give a defense. We're always ready to give an answer. Our English word apology comes from this Greek word that's translated defense or answer. But listen, I want to tell you, it does not mean I want to say I'm sorry. That's not what that word's talking about in this particular situation. It means to give a defense presented in court. A defense presented in court. Apologetics is a branch of theology that deals with the defense of the faith. And what the word of God tells us right here is that every one of you, every one of us, myself, every genuine believer should be able to give a reasoned defense of the hope that you have in Jesus Christ, especially in hopeless situations. That's when it matters, especially in hopeless situations, because a crisis creates the opportunity for witness when you as a believer behave with faith and hope. Because what happens? That's when an unbeliever will sit up and take notice. What's going on here? This person's world ought to be caven in. And they've got hope. They've got peace. But now I need to show you this. That witness must be given with meekness and fear. Meekness and fear, not with arrogance and a know-it-all attitude. We're witnesses, not prosecuting attorneys. We better be sure that our lives back up our defense. The Apostle Peter here is not suggesting that you argue with lost people, but rather that you present to unbelievers an account of what you believe, why you believe it, and in a loving manner. Some of us need to get a hold of this reality that our purpose is not to win an argument, but to be used of God as a means to bring the gospel of Christ to that person.

What It Means To Surrender

What does it mean to sanctify the Lord in your heart? It means I turn everything over to him. I set him apart as ruler, as Lord. It means that I want to please him. It means that my fear of displeasing him ought to be really what drives me instead of the fear of what man might do to me. And I tell you, if you can get to that point, that'll simplify your approach to life. It'll make a big difference. To prepare for the best, even in the worst of times, to prepare for spiritual blessings, got to cultivate love, got to practice the lordship of Christ.

Building A Strong Conscience

And then the third one, the third one, is that we must maintain a good conscience. Must maintain a good conscience. Verses 16 and 17. Having a good conscience that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed. For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good rather than for doing evil. Our word conscience comes from two Latin words, con meaning with, and schio meaning to know, that that conscience, the idea of a conscience, is that internal judge that witnesses to us and enables us to know with, either approving our actions or accusing us related to it. Let me give you an idea about that. Conscience could be compared to a window that lets in the light of God's truth. That's what a conscience is like. And what happens is if we persist in obeying and disobeying, if we persist in disobeying, the window gets dirtier and dirtier until the light can't get in like it ought to, like it should. And that leads to what the Bible calls in Titus chapter 1, verse 15, a defiled conscience. And then he speaks about in 1 Timothy chapter 4, verse 2, a seared conscience, which is one that has been so sinned against that it can no longer really be sensitive to what is right and what is wrong. It's even possible for the conscience to be so poisoned that it actually approves things that are bad and accuses the person when he does good. Doesn't make any sense. It's kind of like the you know the criminal who feels guilty when he squeals on his friends, but he's happy that he succeeded in his crime. That's kind of how that works. Gets all twisted up. And see, conscience depends on knowledge, the light coming through the window. And as a believer studies the word of God, as you study the word of God, and as you get to better know the will of God and understand the will of God, then your conscience then becomes more sensitive to what's right and what's wrong. And a good conscience, like the Apostle Peter's talking about here, is one that accuses us when we think or do wrong and approves us when we when we do right. And it takes exercise to keep your conscience strong and pure. And if you don't grow in spiritual knowledge, if you don't grow in obedience, then you have a end up having a very weak conscience, it talks about in 1 Corinthians chapter 8, which gets all upset very easily by the menial things of life. If you have a weak conscience. Alright, so here's the question. I've got hardship coming, I've got trials coming, I've got opposition on every turn, I'm having difficulties in my life across the board. How in the world does a good conscience help a believer in those times? Well, here's how it fortifies you and strengthens you with courage because you know that you are right with God and you're right with other people to the best of your ability, so that you won't be afraid. You don't have to be afraid. In this situation, in this hardship, in this circumstance, I have a clear conscience. I know I'm not perfect. I know I'm I know I don't have faults, I know I have the capacity to sin, but even in the midst of this situation that is coming my way, I have a clear conscience. I have a good conscience. And so that means I don't need to be afraid. It's like old Martin Luther when uh uh that monument of his over in Germany, it has on it those uh courageous words that were spoken by him before the church council on April 18th, 1551, when he said, Here I stand, I can do no other. God help me. Amen. That's what he said. And his conscience, which was bound to God's word, gave him the courage to defy the entire whole established church of man. Because he had a good conscience, he was called a heretic. You know, he wasn't perfect, he had faults, he didn't get everything right. Neither do you, neither do I. But it gives you courage, it gives you strength, and a good conscience gives you peace in your hearts. You have peace within, and when you have peace within, you can face the battles that are without. You know, the restlessness of an uneasy conscience divides the heart and it drains the strength of a person so that you're unable to function at your best. How do you know? How can you confidently witness for Christ if your conscience is constantly witnessing against you? It's hard. A good conscience removes from us the fear of what other people may know about us, what they think they know about us. You know, you do realize this people are just gonna make up stuff on you. You know that, right? They will. What they think they know, the good conscience will free you of that. It'll it'll remove from you the fear of what they may say against you, what they may do to you. When Christ is Lord, when he is sanctified in my heart, and I fear only God, and you fear only God, what does that mean? That means you don't need to fear threats, you don't need to fear opinions, you don't need to fear actions of your enemies. The psalmist said, King David said, The Lord is on my side, I will not fear. What can man do to me? It was in this matter specifically that Peter failed when he faced the enemy, and he denied the Lord three times. He's writing from experience. And he makes it clear that conscience alone is not the test of right or wrong. A good person can either be involved in well-doing or evil doing. It doesn't matter for a person to disobey God's word and claim it's right simply because my conscience doesn't convict me. That's to admit that something's radically wrong with your conscience. Because I want to tell you, conscience is only a safe guide when the word of God is the teacher.

Light That Triggers Opposition

Now, more and more, more and more Christians in today's society are going to be accused. They're going to be lied about. Let's not give them any extra ammunition. It's going to happen. Our standards, if we're really seeking to live by God's word, our principles are not going to be the same as those in the world, especially as the world continues to turn. And here's what I think is the case when there's a genuine Christian. There's somebody who's really saved by God's grace, and the Holy Spirit's living inside them. What happens is Christians do not create problems, they reveal them. What do you mean? You let a born-again person start working in that office. You let them move into that college dormitory. You let them take a leadership position in a local church over that carnal religious church member that really isn't saved. What happens then is in a very short time there will be problems. A genuine Christian reveals the problems. Why? Because Christians are light in a dark world. Light in a dark world. And they will reveal the unfruitful works of darkness. And the darkness hates the light. And they'll hate you. And they'll say, You're the problem. When in reality, your light is just revealing the problem. You get it? When Joseph began to serve as a steward in Potiphar's house and he refused to sin, what happened? He was falsely accused of sin and thrown into prison. The government officials in Babylon schemed to get Daniel in trouble because his life and his work were a witness against them. Our Lord Jesus Christ, by his very life on earth, revealed the sinful hearts and the deeds of people, and that's why they crucified him. The apostle wrote in 2 Timothy 3 13, he said, Yes, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. And here's the thing if we are to maintain a good conscience, we have to deal with sin in our lives and confess it.

Keeping The Window Clean

I don't like that any more than you do, really, because it hurts your ego, hurts your pride. But if you really want to love the Lord and please Him, you have to deal with your own sin and confess it. We have to keep the window clean. We have to spend time in God's Word to let the light in. It's the spiritual index. It really is. It gets it clean. The washing of the word. A strong conscience is a result of obedience based on knowledge. And a strong conscience makes a strong Christian, which can be an effective witness in the world in which we live. And it gives us strength in times of persecution and difficulty. And there's no believer that should ever suffer because of evil doing. But also no Christian should ever be surprised if you suffer for well doing either. It's the will of God. And our world is so mixed up. It is so messed up and so upside down that people actually call evil good and good evil, and they put darkness for light and light for darkness. I mean, the religious leaders, the religious leaders of Jesus' day called him a person who does evil things. How wrong people can be. Times

Preparing For Blessing And Closing

of difficulty is going to come in your life. It's going to come to the church. We can prepare for the best of God's blessings, even in those difficult times. How do we do it? We have to cultivate Christian love. Why? Because we need each other's help and we need each other's encouragement as never before. We have to maintain a good conscience because a good conscience makes for a very strong backbone and gives you courage. And the secret is to practice the lordship of Christ. Because if we fear God, we don't need to fear men. Samuel Johnson said shame arises from the fear of men. Conscience from the fear of God. You can prepare for the best. We got to follow these instructions. It's not easy always, but with the help of the Holy Spirit and our surrender to Him, it can't happen. And it all starts with being a genuine follower of Jesus Christ, saved by His grace, born again by His Spirit. You say that's Bible language. I'm not really always sure what that means. It means that God has worked in your life in such a way, He has revealed truth to you, He's opened your eyes, He's wooed you to Himself, He's changed your desire so much so that when once you oppose God, did not want the things of God, had no interest in Jesus Christ, now there's a longing and desire to love Him, to turn from your sin, and to trust Him as your Lord and Savior fully. You depend on Him and put Him at the center of your life. Has that been the experience of your life? That's where it begins.
