Texan Edge
The Texan Edge is more than a podcast — it’s a Texas state of mind.
Hosted by Tweed Scott, author of Texas in Her Own Words, each weekday brings a short burst of inspiration, common sense, and straight talk from the Lone Star perspective. Some days we’ll visit a slice of Texas history; other days, we’ll share a story or reflection to help you face the day with grit, gratitude, and grace.
Whether you were born here, got here as fast as you could, or just wish you had — The Texan Edge reminds you why the Texas spirit still matters. It’s where optimism wears boots, humor has manners, and pride runs as deep as the oil wells.
Pull up a chair, friend. Take a listen.
On Wednesdays and Fridays, we focus on a Texas historical event to showcase our daily nugget. Ultimately, it's a Texas thing!
My why with The Texan Edge is to share the spirit of Texas—the humor, grit, wisdom, and warmth I’ve lived and loved here—with people everywhere. I want to remind folks each day that they carry the strength to face life with courage, perspective, and a smile. This podcast is my way of giving back the inspiration Texas has given me, one daily nugget at a time.
Because here at The Texan Edge, we don’t just talk Texas — we live it.
The Texan Edge is "Not just a podcast, but a Texas state of mind.”

Because around here, we don’t wait for perfect conditions. We get back to work.

The Texas Smile, Explained
SPEAKER_00Well, hi there, I'm Tweet Scott, and this is today's Texan Edge. You know, there's something about a Texas smile. Yeah, it's easy, it's friendly, and it makes folks from out of state think that we live on permanent vacation down here. But that grin can be a little bit misleading, because most of those smiles have been earned the hard way. Behind that easy hello is a whole lot of grit. Texans are some of the most optimistic people that you'll ever meet. But it's not because life's always been kind to us, it's because we learned a long time ago that if you wait for perfect conditions, well, you'll never get anything done. Our weather changes its mind about every 15 minutes or so. Our land can swing from soaking wet to bone dry before you can finish your glass of sweet tea. Jobs come and go, storms roll through, prices jump up and down like a rodeo bowl, and yet somehow we keep on smiling. You see, the rancher who walks his fence line after a storm finds it halfway on the ground. He doesn't cuss at the sky, well, at least not for very long, although he will. He just nods and says, Well, it needed fixing anyway. And then he goes back for his tools. You'll see it in the family that rebuilds after a flood, not just once, but twice, sometimes even three times. But that's because it's their patch of earth. It's home. And you don't surrender home, at least not without a fight. Grit is in Texas. It's not a loud thing. It's not about stomping your boots, slamming your fist on a table, or making speeches about toughness. It's quiet, actually. It's that woman who gets up before sunrise every morning and packs a lunch and goes to a job that she doesn't love because her kids need a roof and a future. It's that young man who fails at his first small business, swallows his pride, and tries again with lessons learned and savings gone. A lot of the world thinks strength shows up like a movie hero. You know, lots of noise, big dramatic moments. But Texas teaches a different kind of that. Around here, strength often shows up as steady spirit. We bend, but we damn sure don't break. We get ourselves knocked down, and then we get up, we dust ourselves off and say, Well, hell, that didn't work. Now, well, how do we make this happen? And then we get back to work. Now let me pause right here for a quick shout out. Today's tip of the hat goes to those of you who are living that quiet grit right now. Maybe you're caring for an aging parent, maybe you're working on two jobs, and maybe you're rebuilding after something hits you really hard. You might not think of yourself as especially strong. You're just doing what has to be done. But I see you, and you are the heartbeat of what I am talking about today. So here's uh here's your daily challenge. Sometime today, take a moment and name one place in your life where you've shown real grit. Not the dramatic kind of stuff, just the steady, everyday kind. Now maybe it was finishing school later in life, perhaps sticking with a tough marriage, staying sober one more day. Whatever it is. It's maybe it's even simply getting out of bed when life felt pretty heavy. But say it out loud to yourself. That was grit. And then own it. Texans don't brag much on the hard parts, but it's good for your soul to recognize where you've been strong. And then there's the second part of that challenge. Look around and spot someone else wearing that same kind of smile with steel behind it. Give them a word of encouragement. You don't have to make a speech, just a simple smile and tell them that you appreciate them. That one line right there just might be the wind at their back that they didn't know that they actually needed. If the Texan Edge helps you find that grit in yourself and share a little of it with the people around you, I'd be mighty grateful too if you'd consider supporting our show. You can stop by buymeacoffee.com slash Texan Edge. Think of this tossing a log on the fire so we can keep this little campfire of ours in Texas stories burning and burning bright. Your support helps me carve out the time and do the digging and bringing you a fresh episode every weekday. I'm Tweed Scott, and this has been the Texan Edge. Remember, in Texas, the smile is real, but so is the grit behind it. We'll see you tomorrow.
