Shut Off the Noise Meditation | For Dementia Carers
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Shut Off the Noise is a calming guided meditation for unpaid carers and anyone whose mind simply won't stop — designed to gently quiet mental chatter and create a little space in an overcrowded head.
Using slow breathing, visualisation, and mindfulness, this practice helps you step back from the noise rather than fight it. Not forcing silence, but softening everything just enough to breathe.
For carers supporting someone living with dementia, the mental load rarely switches off. The lists, the worries, the replaying of conversations, the planning for what comes next. This meditation doesn't ask you to solve any of it. It simply offers a moment where you don't have to.
When your brain feels full and you need somewhere quiet to land, this one is for you.
Press play, take a breath, and allow the noise to soften.
Suitable for anyone supporting someone living with dementia, whether at home or in a professional care role.

Hi, I'm Alistair. Welcome to this week's Cows Meditation Podcast. This meditation is called the shut-off the noise meditation. It's a calming practice for those moments when your mind feels busy, loud, or unable to switch off. If your thoughts have been racing through to-do lists, worries, or constant mental chatter, this meditation is simply an invitation to slow things down for a little while. There's nothing you need to solve right now. Just breathing, noticing, and allowing your mind to settle. Now, just take a moment to settle in. And when you're ready, bring your attention to your breath. If your mind wanders during this meditation, that's completely natural. Just gently guide your attention back whenever you notice.
SPEAKER_00Take a deep breath in and sigh it out.
SPEAKER_01Not yet, but in just a moment, you'll begin creating a little more space and quiet within the mind.
SPEAKER_00For four hold for four. Exhale for four and hold for four. Again. Breathe in for four. Hold for four. Exhale for four. Hold for four. Again, keep that going. Breathing in. Holding softly. Breathing out. Holding again.
SPEAKER_01Now imagine your thoughts as clouds moving across the sky. Some drift in slowly. Some move quickly. You do not need to chase them or hold on to them. Just noticing them and allowing them to pass. Returning again and again to the breath.
SPEAKER_00Silently repeat. I am clear. I am steady.
SPEAKER_01I choose my focus. I am clear. I am steady. I choose my focus. I am clear.
SPEAKER_00I am steady. I choose my focus.
SPEAKER_01With each breath, allow a little more space to open inside the mind. A little less noise.
SPEAKER_00A little more calm. Take one final slow deep breath in and gently breathe it out.
SPEAKER_01Let the shoulders soften, the jaw relax. And when you're ready, gently open your eyes. Carry this sense of clarity and steadiness with you into the rest of your day. Thank you for taking this time for yourself. I'll see you next week for the next meditation.
