This week on The Voy Cast we watch Season 2 Episode 14 Alliances. After continuous Kazon attacks against Voyager cost the lives of several crew members and the damage to the ship continues to mount, Janeway seeks an alliance to secure Voyager’s passage through the Kazon Collective.

I'm the colour quadrant. And I'm the colour host Terry. And Terry has a call today, so I'm gonna bring it up to this little noise. Welcome to the Voicast, your home in the Delta Quadrant for all things Star Trek Voyager. Today we are talking about season two, episode 14, Alliances. Basically, Voyager needs help, and they're like, Alright, let's go talk to Susca. That doesn't work out very well for obvious reasons, and then Helix gets abducted, and then we make a new alliance, and then that alliance backfires, and then the Voyager is alone again. So basically we come full circle, and it's a journey. Yeah, it's a journey. The actual description of the episode is after Kazon attacks against Voyager costs the lives of several crew members, and the damage to the ship continues to mount. Janeway seeks an alliance to secure Voyager's passage through the Kazon collective. This episode was written by Jerry Taylor, who we all know has written quite a few episodes. And directed by Les Landau, who I know he's directed episodes before, but I can't remember which other episodes they were. Yep.

Thanks. Uh overall, I thought this episode was really good. The pacing was spot on, the story was solid. It wasn't a super long episode. Like it didn't feel very long. Uh a lot of things happen, even though we do literally just go full circle. And we end up considerably almost considerably worse than we were before. The episode opens with Voyager under attack by you guest at the Kazon. And this is doing a lot of damage to the ship. Uh, lots of crew are injured. There's a scene in here where Belana is trying to get one of her crewmen to uh transport to Sick Bay, and the doctor's like overwhelmed with like there's people in every bed. So, you know, it's been going on for a while now that they've been in combat with these Kazan Raiders, and it doesn't look good.

Yeah, they get to their their shields and weapons are down, and this person that Balana has transported to Six Sick Bay actually succumbs to his injuries and he dies. We don't know this person. You don't know as far as us watching this show.

You're not a big Kurt Insign Kurt fan. Is that what his name was?

Kurt Bendera. Bendera. Yeah, I did write Bendera. Yeah. Um, so but they mentioned that they did have a few previous people die. So like this is this isn't good. And I'm not really surprised. I think even when faced with one Kazon ship, Voyager has been pretty challenged. And this was like several of them. So if the Kazon really want to get them, like feel like they can.

Yeah, they it does feel like Voyager's kind of outmatched at this point and a target, right? They're a huge target. Yeah, Dara dies, and uh we have this conversation in Janeway's ready room with Chicote, where he's trying to confront this uh a little differently. But he says we need to rethink our strategy when it comes to not only protecting the ship, but fighting the Kazon, which are obviously their biggest, the biggest danger to the ship at this point. And he proposes reevaluating their strategy when it comes to the Starfleet code of, I don't know if it's code of ethics or code of uh operation, I forget what it's called, but Starfleet, but just Starfleet protocols that he he thinks that they should be thinking more like the Ma key. The guidebook that they all use, that they all carry around. And she's not real excited about that, but he really pushes the point and says, we're not gonna survive if we don't start thinking outside the box. A lot of those Starfleet codes might not even apply to situations like this, which we've had these conversations before, but I think they're getting a little desperate.

Yeah, he mentions this is the fourth attack on them in two weeks. Like this is it's looking really bad.

Yeah, it's not good. And we kind of send, we have this like sailor's funeral for um Incin Bandera, and they do like the whole whistle thing, which I always thought was fun because whenever I see the whistle, it's someone's coming, Picard's coming onto the bridge, or yeah, they're sending off a dead crewmate, or they're it's like this really, really old naval tradition. And since Starfleet operates as a space navy, not a space air force, they have all these interesting traditions, and you see it a lot in the I don't remember the original episodes as much from the original series, but I do remember the movies from the 80s, and I feel like there was a lot of whistle in those. Interesting.

Yeah, fun thoughts. I don't recall the whistle, but it was I mean, maybe not a fact.

Fun recollection that may be or may not be correct.

I believe you. But immediately like after this memorial, we have another rando approach Captain Jane Way and say that he thinks that we should give the Kazon the technology they want so that they'll leave them alone. And Janeway gets kind of upset and she almost yells, like, I will destroy this ship before I turn any of it over to the Kazon. Yeah, that's classic captain behavior. It felt a little emotionally dysregulated to me. She kind of like that was triggering. It's triggering for her to consider doing this differently. Yeah. Which is understandable.

It's well, she also is just so she has to contain all these emotions like anger, frustration, whatever, and wear this very stoic mask. And you think about other instances of this, like I think about uh the movie First Contact, where Picard is talking to, I forget her name, the survivor they pluck off the planet and is now stuck on the enterprise with them. And he's he's saying, like, I will not abandon the ship, I will, you know, I will fight to the death, basically. And she's kind of calling him out as that's that's absurd. It reminded me a little of that, but yeah, uh, yeah, you're right. Jane Way was not quite acting herself, and I really like to see, and it wasn't like a huge thing, but the acting was really well done where you kind of see this like little breaking point in her.

Yeah, she has so much pressure on her, and for the past four weeks, like it's been all of this pressure. Yeah, you feel it. You feel it in the episode.

Yeah. Uh yeah. So basically we decide the the Janeway and Chicote decide together, and then Janeway is finally convinced that they are going to reach out to the Kazon. They're gonna reach out to forget his name.

Well, Neelix has a contact in the Kazon that they're gonna have him try and contact. Right.

SPEAKER_01 7:54

But then they also reach out to Sesca.

SPEAKER_02 7:58

Yeah, they're in a meeting kind of trying to source ideas for this, and not everyone is super on board with the idea. And Harry Kim is just like, well, why don't we just reach out to Seska? Like he's being completely sarcastic, and everyone's like, Yeah, actually, oh yeah, we might do that, Harry.

Yeah, so they contact the so Neelix goes off to this planet in a shuttle um to see what he can do with his contacts. And at the same time they contract they they contact the Nistrum, and uh that's where um Sesca and uh Cola Cola, like Coca-Cola. The Nistram Maj. It's C-U-L-L-U-H. I'm just gonna say cola, because that's easier to say. And they have a conversation with them briefly uh over Zoom and decide that they'll maybe have a conference to discuss some of this, and obviously it doesn't it doesn't go well, but yeah, they get together.

Yeah, before all that happens, Neelix we follow Neelix down to this planet, and he walks into this CD bar with a very sexy dancer in it.

So sex like very, like, I think this is probably the least dressed woman we've seen so far in Voyager.

SPEAKER_02 9:22

Yeah. Oh yeah. Like basically a Princess Leia as a prisoner. Nelix approaches his contact, and his contact is like trying to figure out a puzzle and said that this woman said she'll sleep with him if he finishes the puzzle. And I'm just like, this is very adult themed.

SPEAKER_01 9:38

Yeah, very, very adult themed. Also, couldn't you just pay, like, can you just pay her? Isn't that why she's anyway? I assume he just doesn't have the money. He's he's strapped for cash and can't afford the strippers that he's making his puzzle next to. It's a really dark picture of the future. Also, I just want to point out gonna avoid going down that rabbit hole. I want to point out the name of the planet is awesome. It's Sobras, like S-O-B-R-A-S. Sobra. I thought that was a really cool planet name. And the exotic dancers of Sobra sounds like a fantastic reggae band. Or a spin-off show. Of course. Yeah, if Disney owned the rights to Star Trek Voyager, it'd be making that spin-off show. Yeah, so they uh have this conversation. His contact says he truly does not know anything, and they are immediately snatched up by some Kazon that are kind of just randomly there and thrown in what I can only describe as a cave. Yep. It's just a cave. Where are all these? They have there's so many caves just everywhere. Caves are utilized more in the Delta Quadrant than I think any cave on Earth has ever been utilized.

That's actually a very interesting point. We do not make I mean we used to. I have heard that like caves were used as like cellars and things, but it seems like nowadays the caves are just caves. They're for animals.

SPEAKER_01 11:15

I mean, we they're they're for animals. Animals. Animals live in there. I think it's budget reasons. It's really easy to reuse a styrofoam cave. They already have a cave that you built already.

SPEAKER_02 11:28

This cave serves as a prison. And there are many people in there. There's like babies and women in here.

Oh yeah, Neelux is like, is that a baby?

And this they all look like a similar species. They're all humanoid, but with some nose ridges that we haven't seen before.

Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

Yeah, they they go up the eyebrows and like up at a 45 degree angle from there.

Cool. We learned that the Kazon are detaining anyone who is not Kazon here in this cave prison, and that these people are called the trade.

SPEAKER_01 12:09

Yeah, the first few times they said that, I thought they were saying trade. Like they were the trade alliance. And then I heard the V sound finally. Well, I thought it was a B sound. B, sorry, B. I don't know. I'm so wrong. I am so wrong. You were so wrong. I watched this a week ago. That's what I wrote down. No, you're right. It's trade. Okay. With a B. So I heard I heard uh I heard trade, trave, and then I heard trabe, maybe. If you mumble it, those all sound the exact same.

And that's good enough.

They are apparently the sworn enemies of the Kazon. And I thought it was really interesting. We find out later that the Kazon got most of their ships from the tr Yeah, maybe find that out very shortly here.

Um Neelix talks a little bit to this. There's a guy that's kind of the leader of the people in the cave, and they're discussing an escape attempt. And so Neelix is like, Yeah, I'll I'll help you. You can count on me. And then are they just and then are they rescued?

SPEAKER_01 13:19

So they escape and they escape by rigging some like little mines, basically, and killing the guards, and then they um they escape out to some we don't actually, I don't think we see this part, but they they like escape onto their ships that are somehow are they just came from hanging out.

SPEAKER_02 13:44

Yeah, it was like a it was a rescue attempt, I think, that just happened to coincide with their escape attempt.

SPEAKER_01 13:52

Yeah, because I thought that I thought that the trabe fleet would have already been um I don't know, captured by yeah, by the Keizan, but then all of a sudden they're rescued by the fleet, which means the trabe are still on the ships, which means why couldn't they have rescued them sooner? I was a little lost. It's inconsequential.

It's a huge gap. I mean, we don't know how far we are from the trabe home world. We don't know how far these people traveled or why they were on this world at all. It didn't seem like they had been detained for all that long, honestly.

No, and we learn that the at some point we learned that the trabe don't have a homeworld anymore because the Kazon have have taken it from them.

SPEAKER_02 14:42

Yeah. Yeah, we start to get the story of how the trabe and the Kazon interacted. And Neelix basically be brings this band back to Voyager, thinking, like, hey, we could actually just make an alliance with the trabe instead of the Kazon. Like, how great would that be? And so he shows up with this what looks like an armada of Kazon ships. Yeah, Voyager's like preparing for battle.

They're like, we're all gonna die.

SPEAKER_02 15:10

But they they hail them and basically we learn everything that the Kazon have they stole from the trade. So every time we've seen Kazon ships, those are technically trabe ships, they're just being piloted by a Kazon.

SPEAKER_01 15:23

So the Yeah, I thought that whole like revelation really added something to the Kazon that I felt like I'd been missing.

SPEAKER_02 15:30

Yeah, that makes sense.

SPEAKER_01 15:33

We learn about their history, that they used to be subservient in a way to the trabe, and the trabe lived in luxury, and the Kazon were a neglected race within that sphere, that political sphere, and basically overthrew them.

SPEAKER_02 15:49

And which we heard a little bit about this in the episode where Chicote and that Kazon child duke it out. He mentions that they like rose up and overthrew their oppressors, and that it happened fairly recently.

I totally forgot that we got that bit of lore in that episode.

Yeah, so it turns out the trabe were these oppressors. But we have the this head honcho guy that was in the cave is on Voyager talking about this. Nemus? Yeah. Okay.

He's a governor.

SPEAKER_02 16:22

Excellent. He is talking about that, and he admits he's like the Kaizon were treated really poorly by the trabe. He's like, I was younger when this happened, I couldn't do anything about it. A lot of the survivors are children, like they weren't involved with that. And he says that once the Kaizon the Kazon rose up against them, they wouldn't let them settle again. And they're kind of chasing them throughout space. So you start to feel bad for the trabe. And like maybe this is he sounds he sounds sorry about it all, basically.

Yeah, honestly, I like trusted this guy. Yeah. Like he did a great job of acting. Yeah, but usually like when they introduce someone that you're supposed to trust, I'm like, he's pretty suspicious, or like, I don't like him. Yeah. This guy, I was like, wow, he's doing a great job. What a cool, uh, what a cool guy. What an opportunity for them. Like, I was really excited for Voyager. He seems so sincere. Yeah, but boy, was I wrong. Spoiler.

So they do. They start talking about aligning with the trabe and kind of against the Kazon. And this would help both of them because they could try and head towards the Alpha Quadrant. Um, and maybe the trabe would find a home world in that voyage. So it sounds really good. I was like excited about this. We did at some point have a conversation with the Nistrums Maj and Cesca, where they were really trying to discuss terms of what an agreement would look like. And the Maj demands that they do an exchange of crew. And Jane is like, absolutely not.

A crew swap exchange program. Yeah. A foreign exchange program.

SPEAKER_02 18:11

Which I could feel I kind of feel like that was a reasonable request, honestly.

SPEAKER_01 18:17

I think it it was meant to what? Like assure mutual destruction or mutual Yeah, I mean like like if if one of the the sides backtracks on the deal or something.

Yeah, which I basically both both crew would be prisoners on their ships.

And I definitely see why the Kzan are way less trustworthy and they know that they're less trustworthy.

SPEAKER_02 18:44

Yeah. At least at this point in the episode. They're right. They're not gonna treat a crew member well. And so when Jane We says no, this Maj is just like, I'm not gonna make dealings with a woman, essentially, and leaves. So that has kind of fallen apart.

SPEAKER_01 19:01

He's said this so many times. Like, I won't work women are, you know, lowly. I'm not gonna make deals with women, I'm not gonna be told what to do by a woman. And it's literally exhausting. Yeah. Meanwhile, Ceska's right next to him, like, come on, I control you. Yeah, she's gonna kill him so bad one of these days. Yeah, she's gonna like, oh, did you catch that she um is blackmailing him with Chicote's baby by telling him that she has his baby? Yup. I was like, oh man, what a twist. And it totally isn't even talked about again. But you're supposed to catch on to that as a viewer.

I liked that little Yep, we know she's pregnant and she has just gone ahead and and told him it's his, which makes sense. So now she's got control over both of these men via the child.

Well, as much as she can have control. Yes. There's uh a quezon, there's a scene with a kaze on where this guy is talking to someone on Voyager through like a little tiny desktop monitor.

Yeah, you've got like another traitor.

It's like, oh, do we have a spy? Um and my mind went to it's a hundred percent that engineer that was talking to Balana earlier in the episode because he was like, We have to contact Sesca, we have to make this work, right? We like you have to reach out to them again. Oh, we can't let Janeway mess this up, basically. And she's like, No, absolutely not. And I think this guy went immediately behind their backs, yeah, and did it himself.

Yes, it's it's all sorts of sorts of messy.

There's all sorts, but it's like the good kind of messy. It's like, oh, this is interesting.

Yeah, lots of moving parts and pieces. So Janeway also likes this old man and trusts him. And so they start talking about like, what if we formed an alliance? And he says, That's not enough. I want to force the leaders of the Kazon to come together and talk about peace. And of course, Shane Way's like, hell yeah. Yeah, that's right up my alley. Let's do that. And she respects the guy for for wanting this.

Yeah. So she's like, Okay, our intentions are aligned enough and let's let's create an alliance together. And then, and then they do they hear about, I forget, do they hear about the conference or do they make the conference?

SPEAKER_02 21:42

They ask for the conference. Yeah. Once they've decided they're aligned, they reach out to all of the leaders of the different Kazon facts and are like, we we want to talk and we want to meet in this place that they set. Well, that's not true. They want to set it, but then I think it's the Nistram Maj. Says he will choose a location, which is fair. He doesn't even want to go to this thing to begin with. But Seska's like, what if you're the only one that doesn't go? Then you're in trouble. Right. So you have to go.

SPEAKER_01 22:14

Yeah. So he's in on Sesca's plan for the conference. And it's gonna be on Sobra. And Nelix is working with his contact, what's his name? Tac Tacrit. And they are kind of working through the details of the conference. And let's see. They learn about a potential assassination plot.

SPEAKER_02 22:38

Yeah. It sounds like someone is trying to cause havoc or sabotage the conference somehow. I don't know how we actually learn this or if it's just a theory. They like there was some scan that happened on Voyager, I feel like, where they found something and they were like, that's a little weird. And then they just moved on from it, as far as I remember.

SPEAKER_01 23:00

Yeah, I I don't actually have it in my notes. I have no idea what it was. But anyway, they believed that there's a security risk. So they theorize that the first person to want to leave the conference is likely responsible for whatever security threat may or may not happen.

SPEAKER_02 23:20

I think so we go forward with the conference.

SPEAKER_01 23:23

Yeah, so we're like, okay, cool, huge security threat. Let's do it. Walk right into it. Let's not warn anyone ahead of time. Let's just go let's just keep it to ourselves. Which doesn't really seem smart in hindsight because it makes them look really bad.

SPEAKER_02 23:38

Yeah. Uh yeah. So we're in like a big redstone building that looks nice, that's been set up for this conference. Somewhere in Albuquerque. And as each different Maj walks in, there's there's a trumpet sound and somebody announces their name. And then there's an applause track that plays each time someone walks in. I was so confused. Like, who is supposed to be clapping? There's no one here just watching the proceedings. Nobody from Voyager is clapping. There's just like there's like whistling and clapping happening every time someone walks in. And it's a different level of whistling and clapping, also. So it's like whoever these invisible audience is, they prefer some of these mosh over the other. What the hell was that?

I think this is something that your sister would get a kick out of because uh it's so clearly um a weird thing they added in production, post-production, and for no reason. Like it sounds like um it's so cheesy, it's so unbelievably cheesy. And the rest of the episode is solid, but this is like uh like straight out of like Robin Hood men and tights entering a like castle chamber, and like people are kind of clapping, and there's like really shitty trumpets announcing. I'm like, yeah, no one is playing trumpet, no one has trumpets, no one's clapping, and there's only eight people in the room.

What is that? But I it's like the moment was just too quiet after each of them walked in, and somebody made the terrible decision decision to address and they did not remove, they did not, they they this was still approved as an episode, even with I mean it made me laugh real hard, so yeah.

No, I I I didn't have too many actual like notes in this one, but that one I just wrote, ha ha, the trumpets. It was so weird. Anyway, yeah, so they all enter all these leaders of the different factions that are, I guess, the most powerful factions for the Kazon right now. And they start having a conversation about the trabe and peace amongst the Kazon with Voyager, and they're all pretty wary of each other. So they're they're trying diplomacy, but honestly, Janeway doesn't actually get to say much. It's mostly the Kazon Cola talking. And then she says something like, Well, we were more aligned with the the trabe on this morally, and that's why we have forged an alliance with them, and now it's kind of in your court as far as what you do.

SPEAKER_02 26:33

And then she says, Surely someone here is tired of the constant violence.

She holds up like a cup of tea. Have you met the Kazon? They all thrive on violence.

SPEAKER_01 26:46

Nobody there gets so bored if they didn't have someone tell.

SPEAKER_02 26:50

What even would be their purpose in life? Honestly.

SPEAKER_01 26:54

Right, right, honestly, Harry. Sorely I was like, You're not in your hollow novel. You never said surely out loud ever before. So all of a sudden, uh they're kind of they're kind of coming to a point where they're like, okay, well, this isn't gonna do much. And Mabus approaches, uh, he's the the governor of the trabe guy, yeah. The trabe. And he says, I I really gotta talk to you alone in the hallway. I was like, what? Very urgently. Yeah, I was like, that's kind of weird. And then the table starts to shake. Right, and Janewee looks at Tuvok like, oh shit. It's totally, it's totally Mabus. He's the one, and you can see it on her eyes, and then uh and then the ship tells everyone to get down. She's like, it's a trap. She literally says it's a trap.

SPEAKER_02 27:53

It's a trap. And and they the four people from Voyager get emergency beamed up, but then yes, we see we see a ship outside the window.

It's a pretty cool ship, not gonna lie. They they upped the production value on the the models that they built for the Kazon ship. And I thought that was cool. It reminded me of that scene in Star Trek into Darkness where Khan like shoots at the board meeting through the windows.

Uh it was exactly like that.

It was exactly that. Yeah, this ship opens fire into the room that all the mosh are in. Yeah.

And in this point, baby muffin. Yeah. She's like, she says red alert. She doesn't even say beam us up. She just says, she just says Chicote, red alert, and then they get beamed up.

SPEAKER_02 28:46

Yeah. I mean, red alert, you want your captain on the ship, I suppose. But must have been the signal, right? At this point, I still hadn't understood that it was the trade gentleman. Really? That was the betrayer. I was like, oh shit, who like who did this? This looks really bad for Voyager. It looks like Voyager purposely set this up. Which, even though, even when we find out it was the trabe's fault, like it's still this looks terrible for Voyager.

It looks so bad. I I don't know. I the second the Mabus guy like leaned over and was like, I gotta talk to you in the hallway. It's urgent. I was like, yeah. I was just like, about what? This is weird.

But yeah, I mean, they're never gonna be able to try anything like this again in this quadrant. Probably everyone in the quadrant's gonna hear about it and think even worse of them. Like, this is this is shitty.

Terry, come into the hallway. I have I I can tell you all about how I can customize your car insurance.

You've been trying to reach me about my car's extended warranty. So we have in in this emergency beam up, we do include Mavis. So he is back on Voyager, and now Janeway is raging at him.

SPEAKER_01 30:04

Yeah, they're they're still in the transporter room, and she's just pissed. And she is like, I will not be, I will not shelter or alliance myself with. She said, she said, like uh uh not an assassin, not a killer. It was like I I won't, it's like a C-word or something, but she's like, I'm not gonna be a part of whatever this is that you're doing, and beams him off the ship, like mid-sentence.

Yeah. He does say a few sentences that are very incriminating about well, not only is this the only way that the trabe could continue to live is if they kill all the Kazan laiders, but he also said some shit about the Kazon, I think. I didn't write it down, but like they're animals or something.

Yeah, it was pretty it was bad.

So I mean, I have to like I'll forgive the I mean, they're not great. No, Kazon. For sure are not great. Um we don't like them. So I'll I'll let them have that like little anger. But he was like, This is the only I I could have knocked out the leaders of the five, like all the Kazon leadership. I could have thrown everything into chaos for them. And you know, why do you stop me? And she's like, This is not right. This is um I'm not gonna make deals with executioners. So I was like, I honestly thought she was gonna say, We don't we don't negotiate with terrorists. Terrorists.

Yeah, and I was I was sad to hear that because I really wanted this whole thing to work out with the train, but it turns out I honestly I was like the the way the episode was going, I was like, wow, this is gonna, this is gonna be so good. Yeah. But it turns out that they are he's not sorry, they're not reformed, and the fact that they were oppressing the Kazon is something that they would continue to do given the chance.

Yeah, yeah, not great. So Janeway calls the senior staff together and basically say we have to start preparing for an all-out war, more so than we already have been. We need to schedule battle drills for all hands. We need to um, you know, Nelix, what's our food supply? What's our antimatter supply? What's our maximum performance? Like she basically goes full, like we are on the verge of being utterly destroyed as a target of all five factions of the Kazon.

There definitely is a feeling that Jane Wade is now even more stuck strongly to Starfleet principles. She's like, oh, I tried branching out and that went really bad. Yeah, boomeranged way back. Exactly. So that's gonna be probably a bit of conflict in the show going forward.

But next week's episode is not Kazon related, but it is one of the episodes that I've seen pictures of and I've heard about, and I'm really uh interested to see how bad it is. Maybe it's good. I don't know. So next week's episode, season two, episode 15, Threshold, a specially outfitted warp-capable shuttlecraft piloted by Tom Paris successfully reaches warp 10, breaking the trans warp barrier. But the side effects of breaking the barrier may cost the crew of the Voyager their best helmsman.
