We're back(again) In part 2 of the the Phillies mid season review take a look at some hallowed numbers that current Phillies are on pace for.  We discuss wheter these records are breakable or not. And welcome back to part two of the 2026 Philadelphia Phillies mid-season review. So we started the first uh part of the pod talking about things that happened in the beginning of the season, uh good, bad, or indifferent, um, what could be fixed, what couldn't be fixed, any moves that we wanted to make um, or that may or may not be made. Um, we're gonna start the second part of the pod talking about um one Mr. Bryce Harper. So in the beginning of the end of last season, our uh general manager stated that Bryce may not be elite anymore. So I want to go around the table. Um Bryce seems to be back to his old self. So I want to ask uh everybody, um you know what? I'm gonna start with Sammy, like I always do. Sammy, you think Bryce is back?

Absolutely. Um from watching him from the beginning of the year, from this year, from the end of last year, he looked like he was just going up and guessing on what pitch was coming, and he was hoping that he was gonna hit it. Um he's hitting a lot better, and he's also being a situational hitter. Um, for an example, like today, even though we lost runners on first and second, takes it opposite field down the line, gets a double out of it, scores a run. Like the way that Bryce Harper can hit, he can hit all over the field. If he just got a little bit better at hitting opposite field, because they all play that shift on him for the pool side, um, he'd be dominant. And he's been playing very well. I mean, what's he have? He has 20 home runs right now. Yep. And we're not even at the all-star break. So he's he's definitely come around.

Bails, like what you've seen out of Mr. Harper?

Yeah, I wouldn't agree with Sammy. He I think he's back. Like, as he was saying, compared to the end of last year, beginning of this year, he was just guessing, hoping to swing for the fences, hoping the bat touched the ball. And it clearly was not working out for him because he genuinely looked atrocious at the plate. But now his vision has gotten better. I mean, his cycle game, I think, was insane to watch, doing it in five innings as well. His hitting. Yeah, that was kind of interesting. Um I just think like he has like his confidence back, and I think that also helps like with the whole dynamic of the team as well, with him being such a vet and a big name in the sport.

Joy, what you like about Mr. Harper's game so far this year?

Uh he's doing well. He's I mean, he scuffled a little bit and he uh he did something that you don't expect guys on the plus side of 30 to do. Uh he went with a heavier bat, and it's been a difference maker. Um You know what size? What is it? 36? He's swinging a 34 inch. I think he's a 34-inch bat, but I think it's 33 ounces. Damn, drop one. Um big ass bat. You know, he was just he was just off. Just off a little bit, and you don't really see it happen often. You don't see guys do it for a long time because you know it's it's it's a heavier bat. It's yeah, it's hard to get around. Um, but since he's made that switch, he's been on fire. Um it also helps having protection. You know, I mentioned it earlier, how boom, you know, in the previous years wasn't the protection. Well, now when you got Brandon Marsh behind him, who's batting 320 on the year, you know, pitchers are gonna be aware of that as well. And you know, Harper's gonna start getting some pitches to hit. Uh but I I I didn't think anything less of Harper after last year.

Uh a lot of people did. Could have been just a phynical Philly thing, but a lot of people were saying things about Bryce. I didn't. I I'd say that's like he had a down year, man.

He just he got into a funk at the end of last year and he couldn't get out of it. That's why I looked at it. As far as this year, you know, pretty much Joey Bailey. Sammy all says, Is that it? You know, he's seen the ball better. I didn't know about the bat. That could be something, you know, that's helping him out a lot. Um, but like Sammy said the other day, runners on base, runners in scoring position. The way he was swinging, he wasn't swinging for defense. And he ended up putting one up the middle.

Uh it's been a while. And he ended up putting it opposite field with a full count, opposite field, scored a run. Um, yeah, so I to me, I don't think he ever left. He just got into a funk that he couldn't get out of.

It it again, it goes for having a feel, it goes for having a pulse for your clubhouse. And, you know, uh when you got a guy behind Topper who, you know, and Don Mattingly, who everybody respects in the league, you know, it's kind of I I wouldn't be surprised if, you know, Harper was probably talking to Mattingley more than he was Topper. Wow.

Okay. Yeah, I can see that. Yeah. That that goes back great the whole we played. The name holds me. Yeah. So talk talking about that, there was someone you mentioned before we talked about. Bryce Harper. Um, someone also who has greatly benefited, or we think may have benefited greatly from Tom Addley, and that is uh one Mr. Brandon Marsh. So um this this segment is called the the good Brandon Marsh problem. So obviously we've seen what Brandon is doing. Brandon is making five million dollars this year. He's arbitration eligible next year. What do you do with Brandon Marsh? I'm gonna start with you. What do you do with Brandon Marsh? Do you let him test the market or do you try to sign him now to an extension? And what does that look like? Because there ain't a lot of guys batting what he's batting right now. But then again, he has not done it for very long. Is this a one-off or is this who he is? You have to take that into consideration when you sign a guy like that. What do you think?

I think I would try to sign him. Because before, like Joey was saying earlier, he was more of a platoon guy, like going in here and there, whatever, but now that he's being in the game, in the starting lineup, every game, and he's proved why we should re-sign him to keep him.

What I would do with Brandon Marsh is he was making five million this year.

I go to arbitration hearing, I probably pay him somewhere close to twelve million. All star break next year, depending on how he's doing. Is the ex depends on the extension he's gonna get. Um say he continues this until next year, and he's a 300 hitter. It's somewhere between five to seven years, and it's probably around 120 million.

That's the that's just the going rate for baseball. That's probably about right. You know, you know also plays a part in it, and this is why they probably probably doesn't get extended this year, is the lockout that's presumably looming in the darkness waiting to happen. So for those they get figured out.

Yeah. So for those who don't know, when we speak about the lockout, Major League Baseball wants to get rid of these 10, 11-year deals. They want to do what basically all other sports do. They want a cap, like I think they want to cap it like five years. If it's your guy, six years. But if it's a guy you're signing from another team, a five-year cap. So deals like Harper got, Schwarbergot, Juan Soto got, those deals will be no null and void. Clearly.

Um, he can turn into a corner outfielder, a steady corner outfielder, and it takes a lot of pressure off of, you know, now I just need to find one outfielder, not two. Because we know right now outfield is our weak link. I'll see. So it's it'll be interesting to see what they do, but I don't think it's gonna suck for a lot of players that don't get extensions or are looking to go into this offseason to get a deal because it's gonna be a struggle.

Yeah, and I think there are a lot of guys, and this is what goes, takes me back to the Scooba thing. Like, there are a lot of guys that roll the dice and say, I'm gonna go in the free agency. Well, a guy like Scoobyl, maybe two years ago, if you it's in that same timeline, we're talking eight, nine years, couple hundred million dollars. That's not happening now. So that's the game you play because you gotta follow the money.

So in this segment, we're going to go around the table and ask can these guys do certain things that a lot of Phillies have not done? So um the first one is Brandon Marsh. Uh as of right now, Brandon Marsh is hitting 315, correct? Yes. Um since uh 1960, which is what they call the modern era, and I feel like I have to uh explain what the modern era is. Um the modern era, because a lot of people don't I I I I know a lot of baseball people don't even understand what the modern era means. They say the modern era starts in 1960. Basically, that was when at least every team had one at least black or Latin player. So that's the modern era. Um because I know Babe Roof was great, and there's somebody doing a documentary about Babe Roof that he might have been black, but I digress. That's another story from another day. That you can't I'm I'm telling you, I think it might be Cecil Sympathy who's doing a documentary, but anyway. Um, you can't have some of these historic numbers when you have a certain segment of the population that you don't play against. So 1960 is when every team had at least one black Latin player. That is the modern era. So since 1960, there have only been eight guys on the Phillies that batted over 320. Only eight. Right? Oh, some guy named Tony Gonzalez, I don't know who that is, Bobby Bray, who batted 335 twice, Utley, 332, he's third, Pete Rose, 325, Dykstra, 325, Polanco, 325, Manny Trio, 324, and John Crook, 323. So those are the only guys that have ever batted.

And um it's crazy when you look at it. That's a 2011 team's gotta be on there. They're the only team on there that does not have Carlton in it. Makes sense. So um 1977, Steve Carlton, Larry Christensen. Carlton had 23 wins. Christensen had 17. They're one. Carlton and Dick Rufin, a year after that, had 41 wins. Uh Carlton and Jim Kat had 37. Carleton and Christensen did it again the following year. And Lee and Halliday are fifth, and they had 36.

They might be second on the list, 38, 39 total, but I don't see him knowing it.

I think we all have him close, but not going over that. Um which segues to the next question on the list. Um Sanchez. Um 20-game winner. So in the modern era, the uh Philos have only had two 20-game winners since 1960. Um Steve Carlton did it five times, and Roy Halliday uh did it once. Um Carleton was 27 once. Halliday was 21 and 10. Um before I mention the uh Hamilton's never won 20 games. Never won 20 games. Um before I I talk about can you do it? I I like I said I saw this Steve Carlton, because everything is Steve Carlton's every everything on the list is Steve Carlton. So the year um the year I was born. Uh so I wasn't at any of these games. 75? No, 72. Um there was a 156 game season. Carleton was 27 and 10 in this in this season. The rest of the staff had 32 games. So he had 27 and the rest of the staff had 32.
