Episode 12

Safe Enough To Finally Exhale

Over the past 12 episodes, we've explored the emotional side of fertility struggles that often goes unspoken.

The loneliness.

The survival mode.

The grief that has no name.

The questions that change everything.

And the quiet ways we can begin to find ourselves again.

In this final episode of Series 1, I'm talking about something I've been building towards throughout the entire series:

The possibility of feeling safe enough to exhale.

Not because everything is fixed.

Not because the journey is over.

But because there is another way to move through uncertainty, grief and waiting without losing yourself in the process.

If you've ever felt like you've been holding your breath through this journey, this episode is for you.

Host

Hiya. Today is our 12th, can you believe it, and final episode of this first series of the Heart of Fertility, and I want to start by saying something before we go any further. Thank you. Thank you for being here, for listening, for trusting me with the part of this journey that doesn't always have a voice Whether you found this podcast at the very beginning of your journey or somewhere deep in the middle of it, or after something that had brought you to your knees, I'm so glad you're here. I want to talk about something I've been building towards across this entire series. Not a destination or a finish line, but a feeling, the feeling of finally being safe enough to exhale When I started planning this series, I kept coming back to one question: What do people on this journey most need to hear? Not medically or clinically, but in the in between, in the moments when it's 3:00 AM and the thoughts won't settle, and they're spiraling into that rabbit hole, and nobody around them quite understands the weight of what they're going through. The answer I kept coming to was, you're not alone in this, and you're not failing. Because so many of the women I've spoken with, brilliant, strong, women, have spent months or years on this journey quietly believing That they are somehow more alone in this than everyone else. That the way they're struggling means something is wrong with them. And so much of what we've talked about across these episodes has been, in different ways, a gentle undoing of these two beliefs. We've talked about survival mode, about the nervous system, about the grief that doesn't have a name. We've talked about what it means to stop fighting your body and begin to feel at home with it. We've talked about the questions that change things, about staying silent, and about walking through fire. And underneath it all, one thread has run through everything The possibility of feeling safe again. I want to be honest about something. When I talk about finally feeling safe enough to exhale, I'm not talking about everything being resolved. I'm not talking about the journey being over. I'm not talking about the grief being gone or the fear disappearing or the losses somehow making sense because for many, those things don't fully resolve and pretending otherwise would be a disservice to everything you've been through. What I'm talking about is something quieter than that. It's the moment when the bracing eases even slightly, when you stop waiting for the next thing to go wrong even briefly, and when you catch yourself present in a moment rather than living three steps ahead in fear. Sometimes it could be the first morning you wake up and realize you slept without your mind immediately scanning for danger. It's the moment in a conversation where you laugh, really laugh and then notice that you laughed. It's the quiet, almost imperceptible shift from surviving this to beginning to live alongside it. That's the exhale, not the end of the journey but the beginning of breathing differently within it I remember my own exhale. It didn't arrive dramatically. There was no single moment where everything shifted and I suddenly felt healed. It was more like a gradual loosening A morning where I noticed the light through the window before I noticed the fear A conversation where I talked about my journey without feeling the pain of it in my chest. A moment of sitting quietly, just sitting without my mind immediately pulling me somewhere else Not perfect, not painless, not without grief, but present, grounded in my own body in a way I hadn't been in for a very long time. The shift didn't come from pushing harder or hoping more fiercely or staying more positive. It came from the things we've talked about throughout this series, from slowing down enough to listen to myself, from learning to ask different questions, from finding spaces, even small ones, where my nervous system could remember what safety felt like, from allowing myself to be supported rather than waiting until I felt I'd earned it. Until one day I realized I wasn't holding my breath anymore. I was exhaling Wherever you are on this journey, I want to speak directly to you. Whether you're still in the waiting, in the grief, in the uncertainty of not knowing how your story ends, or whether you're somewhere on the other side of it, carrying something that hasn't fully settled yet, I want you to know that the exhale is possible for you. Not because I can promise you a particular outcome, not because healing is linear or guaranteed or looks the same for everyone, but because I've sat where you are sitting right now, and I found my way to a different kind of breathing. And the things that made that possible were not extraordinary. They were small, consistent, gentle. They were moments of genuine rest for a nervous system that had been striving and surviving for too long There were questions that interrupted the loop and invited something new. And there were spaces and people that saw me as a whole person, not just a patient with a problem to be solved Those things are available to you, not to fix everything, but to begin This is the end of the first series, but it's not the end of this conversation because the conversation we've been having about what this journey really does to you, and what you truly deserve in the midst of it, is one I intend to keep having in the second series, in the community spaces I hold, in the work I do alongside every person who finds their way to The Fertility Sanctuary. If you've been listening and something has stirred inside you, if there's a thread from any of these episodes that you want to pull on further, I'd love for you to come and continue the conversation. You're welcome to join me in the Sanctuary Circle And if you're ready to explore what other support I can offer you, my door is always open. The details for all of these are in the show notes. And if you haven't yet downloaded my free meditations, please do. For the moments in between The quiet moments, the hard moments, the moments when you just need somewhere to be just for you they're the meditations I wanted to create that I wish I'd had on my journey The link is in the show notes too across 12 episodes, we've talked about survival, nervous systems, and the grief that has no name. We've talked about bodies that feel like battlegrounds and identities that quietly shift, and the particular exhaustion of hoping after heartbreak We've talked about silence and fire and the questions that change everything And underneath, every single episode, one thing has remained true You're not too much. You're not overreacting. You're not failing because this is hard. You're a woman who has been carrying something profound. You deserve to feel safe enough to exhale right now, exactly as you are Not eventually, not once it's over, not once you've proven that you can cope. It's been the greatest privilege to spend this time with you. Be gentle with yourself, and I'll see you in the next series. Take care
