Everyday Life:Conversations Over Coffee
Monster Hunt Anyone?
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Jen and Dagda kick off with a weather check, a quick update on balancing work life, and shout outs to international listeners—complete with chaotic (and heartfelt) attempts at saying “thank you” in multiple languages. From there, they jump into fandom news, including renewed hope (and rumors) around a Dresden Files reboot that could finally honor the long-running story arcs.
Then Dagda makes his case for Monster Hunter International—bounty-hunting monsters, government payoff systems, outlawed magic, and a protagonist whose first encounter with a werewolf is as wild as it sounds. Along the way, they rant about trailer culture ruining movies, touch on Teen Wolf rewatches and reboot dreams, and wrap with reading/listening recommendations as a better escape than doom-scrolling.

SPEAKER_00I'm an angel. I never fucking cuss.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Anyways, you ready to go?
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_02Alright, let's go.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay, buddy.
SPEAKER_02Okay, little John. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, wait. He doesn't say yeah, yeah, yeah. He says yeah, yeah. Oh what? Right. Fuck. How are you doing today? I'm doing all right. How are you doing? I'm doing great. The sun came out. The sun will come out tomorrow. It better. We need a little break from the rain we've had. Yeah. There's been a couple of times where it's just like, um, that's a lot of rain.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I have been glad the last actually pretty much all last week, it might have drizzled a little bit, but I didn't have like soaked feet after walking or anything like that. Yeah, I think. In fact, the a couple of times it was raining, but so little that it I didn't even need to bust out my rain jacket. It just nice. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Well, because I know like uh like for me, you know, I work a little later in the day. I don't, you know, I work later in the afternoon day and evening. Um, but like I think it was last Wednesday, I think 4 30 came, and all of a sudden it was like it got dark, it was like it rained like really hard for like an hour and then it was fine. And it was just pitter patter. But it was like, holy shit, like people were getting soaked from their cars into the building. It was crazy.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Anyways. So we revealed to everybody we had a secret, we kind of kept a secret, and you know, well, it's good for us. Yeah, it's good for us to be able to pay bills and not be like out at the sidewalk by the you know, freeway interest with cardboard sign, podcaster needs money. So it's kind of it's kind of nice as we build and grow to be able to do not worry about that as much. Does it limit our time? Of course.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh, but um it's okay because we're pretty organized. We get a lot done when we spend a day together.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
International Shout Outs
SPEAKER_02I mean, that's just how we do. Um, and also, so we had this thing happen with our after dark side, where we did a pause, we're doing a two-week pause on that, and then we'll be back to rolling things there, and that'll be a better balance. But what I did want to say was do do do do do do do do do. So we have what's really exciting for me is we have um got listeners now that aren't just from the United States, yeah, not just from the UK, not just from your homeland of Ireland. Um, but we have had this just like for a little while there, the Ukraine was coming in, and like all of a sudden, out of nowhere, and I find it fantastic because obviously it's my heritage, the Germans just came in with das Boot and just said, hello, we are here now. So I tr the Germans.
SPEAKER_00It's my heritage too. Yeah, although I'm not sure if I'm actually of German descent or Austrian descent specifically, right? I would say same thing, but Arnold would probably call me and go, it's not the same thing.
SPEAKER_02I mean, it's kind of the same tribe of people, but they're side by side, they're neighbors. Yeah. Um, but Germany came in all of a sudden in the last couple weeks, just like thunderstruck, just boom, came in. We're seeing a growth there. I came in like a wreck. I can tell you a funny story about rocking ball in a second. Um, then Spain, all of a sudden, people in uh Madrid just started listening in. And it's just like awesome. And then the Ukraine, of course, is still up there with our our here in the States we call it our foreign listeners.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I call it my friendly weirdos, and I love you guys, and that's awesome. So I tried to, and I'll try to do this as we go through time and all that. I tried to write down and learn how to say thank you in their most commonly spoke language.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_02Unfortunately, I think I'm gonna sound like a creep, but here's it goes. For all of our friends in German redacted, redo. For all our friends in Germany, the wenn dein Frust Zuharten. That's as close as I'm gonna get because like Google Translate talks way too fast, my cat. But that's supposed to say thank you for listening. So we appreciate you. And of course, from my heritage to yours, go Germany. Um, and in Spain, that one's a lot easier. That's a lot easiest in Spain to all of our listeners in Madrid who are coming in and finding us. Gracias por escuchar, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that sounds right. I remember escuching is the base word for listen. So yeah.
SPEAKER_02Muchas gracias, muchas gracias, muchas gracias. And then my favorite one though, the easiest one to learn was in the Ukraine. And of course, for me, my hearts are with you guys that haven't done anything wrong. I hope whatever naughty people were there are gone. Um but in the Ukraine. Um, and just because I thought it was so fucking cool, in Mandarin, Sisi for our friends in Singapore.
SPEAKER_00CC.
SPEAKER_02It's C C A.
SPEAKER_00C A C A.
SPEAKER_02C A C A. Or something along those lines, or something along those lines. Brazil, I I think is great. Um, so for me, we talked about this. It's um Muito Abrigada for me, and it's Abrigado. Abrigado. Abrigado. That's correct. Of course, the UK is like cheers, mate. Uh that was easy. But the Philippines, excited about this one. Salamapo.
SPEAKER_00Salamapo.
SPEAKER_02Yep. Of course, France, we all know merci beaucoup.
SPEAKER_00Merci.
SPEAKER_02Merci beaucoup. After spending an hour just trying to figure out how to properly say Vivienne, Dank First Zuherin. That's all I know right now.
SPEAKER_00Yes, thank you, everybody.
SPEAKER_02Thank you guys. It is, it's it's such a fun thing to see. I love seeing uh where you guys are at. It makes me feel great knowing that I'm not alone in this world. I have you and I have you know my family, but like it's nice to know there's other people out there that are making fun of us, making fun of ourselves.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
The Reboot Rumors
SPEAKER_02It's just like, yes, weirdos unite. And what I'm really excited about is that some of you guys have been doing more investigations into Jim Butcher. So thank you. We want to support him. I actually looked for an update this morning, and it's just like it's it's so much more of a reality of them rebooting the series.
SPEAKER_00Oh, really?
SPEAKER_02Yes, it's it's getting one step closer. It's not definitive, but there is one major streaming line that is just like, we need to work out these details and figure this shit out. So I I actually saw that. It was it was kind of like one of those little blurbs a couple weeks ago because I like do research every couple hours, a couple hours. Ah, I'm dead. Every couple weeks I type in, is there an update? Is there an update? And I haven't for the last couple weeks because I've been busy. I've told you. I had a couple, a couple weeks where it was like six on, one off, six off, six on two off. Um, so you know that happened. So I hadn't checked for a couple weeks, but then when I did, there was a little blurb um saying that Jim Butcher is heavily involved in what's going on because they want to more follow the storyline. So what they're looking at potentially starting off with is following the storyline because one thing that's very consistent throughout the Dresden Files is the battle with the vampire courts. Okay. So they're so they're looking at using that as their primary instead of where the old Dresden Files basically tried to do a theory every episode, it's talking about maybe doing it a little bit more Game of Thrones style.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they almost went where they tried to do a book, an episode. And they didn't even get the books right.
SPEAKER_02Okay, let's just be honest here. I love Paul Blackthorne, but they didn't even get the books right, honestly. I mean, they didn't even get the episodes right and the books right at all. So, but that looks like one of the ideologies is they're gonna follow uh Dresden's battle with the different vampire courts, and of course, exclusively as far as his love life goes, they're not gonna do these little side pieces that he dates for a couple months and that's it. But they're looking at maybe focusing in on the show.
SPEAKER_00Lucio was no side piece, thank you for anyway.
SPEAKER_02Oh, sorry, Lucio wasn't even in her right body, so you know. All wrinkly in the wrong spots.
SPEAKER_00Wow. I mean, that was part of it, but yeah.
SPEAKER_02I think my personal feelings is that Harry Dresden falls in love with with people's minds first and souls first before anything else. Yeah, because he restrained himself for a long time with Susan.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So uh, but that's where the that's where it's potentially they're gonna start the series off is focusing on just his not his interest in Karen that he's had all the time, but like his relationship with Susan and the fight with the cords. And yeah, and so that's kind of an interesting thought to me because um so they might draw out the Bianca storyline longer and well, I I it's that's what I'm thinking, but it's uh but I'm I'm thinking it's also might be one of these things where they actually want to interrupt it. Sure fucking did it hit the ground. Where maybe they want to bring in his kids into play sooner. Oh, spoiler alert, he's got two kids. He's got a clumb baby and he's got a real baby. Jesus. I don't care, it's a clumb baby. No, yes, because he dated Sheila, who turned out to be Lash or Lash Sheel.
SPEAKER_00Spoilers.
SPEAKER_02Spoilers! So if Sheila wasn't real and it was all in his mind, that's a clum baby. No, but okay, anyways, so so that's where we're that on that. So, anyways, that's not what I wanted to talk to you about today. Because I don't like it, it's too soon to do more Dresden, although people are loving Dresden because Jim Butcher and the Dresden universe are awesome. Although I wish it would have. Could you imagine if it was the Dresden files? Hold on, but not based in Chicago, but based in Washington, they could totally get rid of Seattle.
SPEAKER_00Well, so you need to read the fucking Monster Hunter International series. Um in one of the so there's the main Monster Hunter International series. Right, right. And then for a bit there, the author, Larry Korea, opened it up for other authors to write within the setting.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And it was kind of brilliant the way you did it, because there's like a the um the main group that you're following is a company called Monster Hunter International. And they have a library where they have the journals of old hunters. And so no, thank you. Um, and so in this library, like I said, there's a bunch of journals of old hunters. Okay, and so they call it um the Grimoire series, I think. No, that's not it. Anyway, sounds right. It's the Monta Well, he he wrote a series called Um The Grimoire Chronicles, okay, which is completely unrelated. Oh anyway, I I think it's called Chronicles or something like that. Anyway, um other authors came in and wrote like a three, well, one of them was a three novel series about one of the hunters that's they have the journals for. And so this one, like the the regular Monster Hunter series is set in like the early 2000s. Okay. For the most part. Um the first chronicle set is set in um the 90s.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_00Um and a good portion of it happens in Washington State, including Seattle. Uh and then the rest of it is in like Louisiana, because that's where the dude ends up being at. Um, and then there's another one that there's only one book out so far, at least that I'm aware of, and it's set in California from another Monster Hunters journals.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00Um, but yeah.
SPEAKER_02I just think, like, look, we're the Pacific Northwest, right? And I think we have so many kind of awesome freaking legends around here, especially especially something like Monster Hunters International, or even, you know, in in the Dresden verse, where where they're hunting these different, you know, things. It's like, hello, come to the West Coast.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And so one of the things with Monster Hunter International is that they have it's not like the Dresden Files where it's um uh kind of episodic? No, where it's like you're following a wizard.
SPEAKER_04Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00Instead, in this, and you're following a bunch of supernatural creatures, basically. Um, in this instead, you're mostly, mostly, following normal humans who they're bounty hunters that hunt monsters.
SPEAKER_04Right.
SPEAKER_00Um, and there's the federal government way back in like the 1700s, 1800s, sometime around in there.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_00Set up what is called Puff, which is the bounty system. It's perpetual unnatural forces fund.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
Monster Hunter International
SPEAKER_00Um, and basically they set up like yeah, so they set up um bounties for various types of creatures. Okay. But only creatures that you can get physical evidence for. So you you kill a ghost, it doesn't count. Um, but vampires, you can get physical evidence that you killed a vampire or a zombie or a werewolf. And then they're based on the bounties are based on how dangerous they are. Like, so if you kill a zombie, it isn't worth that much money. You kill a hundred zombies, it's worth more money. You kill a werewolf, it can be worth a shitload of money depending upon how old the werewolf is, or what his alpha status is or omega status.
SPEAKER_02Well, and also like how much he's done.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, how many, how many people he's killed or whatever, the bounty goes up. Um, but generally, like in magic users, magic is out just straight up outlawed. So um uh so if you kill a necromancer, the necromancer is gonna be worth a shitload of money. And then if he raced a bunch of zombies, it's gonna be worth even more. And if you kill the zombies too, you're gonna get the bounty for the zombies as well. So the trifecta. Yeah. Um, there aren't really it's very um the supernatural is largely based on um uh what the fuck's it called? Um goddamn it, like Cthulhu. Um, and so generally speaking, magic comes from beings like that, which is why it's just straight up outlawed. Um, so because it's like the source of magic is almost always evil. Um now they don't necessarily have people like Harry Dresden in the setting. Um, because basically everybody who uses magic is using the power of like Cthulhu or something similar to that. Right. Um, and so if like the white there is kind of room for like the White Council in Monster Hunter, it's just that they would be so secretive that they're hiding the fact that they exist, um, which would be kind of easy, but there's an entire fucking department of the government that's set up to deal with this stuff. So yeah. Anyway.
SPEAKER_02Well, you know, I mean, it sounds very interesting to me because as long as almost as long as I've known you, you've been following this Modern Hunter Session series. And what's great is that you've picked up along the way, you've picked up the hats, you've got the hats with patches, you've now got the patch on your jacket.
SPEAKER_00I got two patches on my jacket that are Monster Hunter International related. And I have more patches, it's just that several of the patches that I have don't have Velcro on them, so I can't put them on the patches that need to be sewn onto something.
SPEAKER_02Well, and it's just it's um it's a fascinating story line, I think. But like I'm trying to figure out where the continuity would come in. It's like, you know, I I'm obviously they're monster hunters internationally. I get lay it, but where's the continuity with the characters?
SPEAKER_00Is it like whoever's running the field office for so in the main series, you're mostly following this dude named Owen Zestaba Pitt.
SPEAKER_02Um I'm sorry, say that name one more time.
SPEAKER_00Owen Zestaba Pitt.
SPEAKER_02Okay, that makes more sense than what I thought you said.
SPEAKER_00Portuguese and like Pacific Islander or something. Um and he's like he's kind of a Mary Sue character. In other words, he's like good at almost everything.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_00So he's like uh he started out as an accountant.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_00His dad, however, was like special forces or something like that in Vietnam. Okay. Uh in the Vietnam War, I should say. Um, and so his dad kind of tried to raise his kids uh to be badasses. Okay. The best way to say it. His dad, and this is a bit of a spoiler, his dad knew that one of his children was supposed to become a quote unquote chosen one, and that if he didn't prepare his child, the end of the world would come.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_00So he tried to fucking because yeah, the main character has a brother. So both of the sons, he tried to raise them in such a way that they would be prepared to either one of them. Yeah. Um, because the he didn't know which one it was, he just knew that one of them was supposed to be quote unquote the chosen one. Um and so anyway, he grew up training in weapons and stuff, um and like learning survival techniques, blah, blah, blah.
SPEAKER_04Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00Um, although he rejected that when he grew up. He was like, Okay, fuck you, Dad, you're crazy. Um, and then became an accountant. Uh-huh. So he's smart enough to be a professional accountant, and then he paid his way through college by doing fucking illegal underground pit fighting, basically. Okay.
SPEAKER_02Um I mean, who doesn't like a good fight club?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And then he's also super into guns. And then he fucking survives his first introduction to the supernatural, which is he gets attacked by a fucking werewolf and kills it um without any of the proper equipment. Knowledge or equipment. Yeah, so he doesn't have silver. So in this setting, werewolves regenerate and are very tough and strong and all that. But if you do enough damage to them, you can kill them even if you don't have the correct weapons.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_00Um, because eventually they'll they'll regenerate, but if they don't have enough energy to regenerate, eventually they will fucking die. So he basically he shoots it a bunch of times with a regular gun. Um, he beats it with a fucking fire extinguisher, then he manages to toss it out of a fucking like eighth story window and push a desk out on top of it, which crushes it and finally kills it.
SPEAKER_04Jesus.
SPEAKER_00Um in the meantime, however, he does get pretty fucked up by it, but he doesn't get he doesn't turn. Um and so, yeah, his initial uh introduction to the world of the supernatural is kind of extreme, and he shouldn't have survived, but he did. Uh yeah.
SPEAKER_02That's crazy. Sorry, my phone just went off, and I actually just got warned by the Department of Licensing. There's this huge scam going around, and they just tried to get me for it, and it's just like really, bro, you're fucking stupid. I don't drive in King County, so um you can go for yourself.
SPEAKER_00So you're not sure that was not me.
SPEAKER_02Anyways, um, it sounds like a very intriguing series to me, but I'm just well, first off, you can't find them at the library.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's kind of I mean so I think part Of it might be because the writer is pretty outspoken right wing type person.
SPEAKER_02Most libraries are not right wing, they're center or left of center.
SPEAKER_00Um, and so I think I don't know if that's the reason or not, um, but it stands to reason that that could have something to do with it.
SPEAKER_02Well, especially nowadays political climate, because if it was available at the library 10, 15 years ago, you know, yeah, because my friend Jeremy read a bunch of them and he got them from the library.
SPEAKER_00Of course, it also is one of those things where um based on popularity, things don't stay at the library forever. And so things that are newer will tend to be there regardless of how popular they are, and then they'll go away. Like the the Dresden Files is super popular, so it's still there. But the Monster Hunter International is probably maybe a tenth as popular as that.
SPEAKER_02It's still a pretty popular series, but nowhere near as popular as if you could only listen to or read one for the rest of your life, which one are you gonna go to?
SPEAKER_00The Dresden Files.
SPEAKER_02Yay, me too.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I really like them. Uh I really like Monster Hunter International. However, number one, the author is not currently writing books for it. Um, he just kind of stopped. Um, although, like I said, he did open it up for other authors, yeah. Although he's only had three other authors write like actual full-on stories, not short stories. Jim Butcher actually wrote a short story for Monster Hunter International, which was amazing.
SPEAKER_02Um Well, I know that one of the short stories was not well received because it was nothing like the rest of the flow of the books. I remember hearing that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and and then one of the main stories, it was kind of off-putting because it was like it okay, it's part of the main storyline, but there's two books that aren't more or less directly mainly about the main character in in the main storyline, right? One of them is about um I don't I don't want to describe them too much because they're spoilers.
SPEAKER_02We don't care about spoilers around here. TV spoils everything for us. Have you seen have you have you seen these recent movie trailers that are seven minute long and they only show the best part of the movie, so you know the whole fucking movie?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that used to be a pro huge problem, like, oh, only the good parts of the movie are in the trailers.
Who is Owen...
SPEAKER_02They used to do movie trailers for 30 seconds and then COVID hits and they do a minute and a half, and now movie sales are still down, even view-at-home movie sales are still down, so now they're doing three, four, and five minute. And that's literally like, and the one that pissed me off that I saw that made me go, like, oh, I even I love this character, I can't wait to do it anymore. Was like there was a three and a half minute trailer for Black Widow when it first right before it came out, because they were really promoting it very heavily. Yeah, and I remember being like, Oh, I can't wait to see that scene. I bet that's hilarious. And what they showed in the scene was only half of what they even showed on the fucking uh preview, in the preview, so it ruins it for me half the time.
SPEAKER_00Also, sometimes they'll get the previews together before the movie is done. Finish editing, yeah. Yeah, and then they'll see scenes and you're like, this was never in the fucking movie.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well, and that's the thing. So that happened with uh one of the John Wick movies, one of the one of the trailers we saw for I think John Wick 3, and it was just like, wait, where's this? It was a deleted scene. Same thing with Guardians of the Galaxy Part 3.
SPEAKER_00I've still not watched that one.
SPEAKER_02There is something fucking wrong with you, man.
SPEAKER_00No, and then I think part of it is that every time I go to watch a movie or even continue watching a television series, I feel like I don't want to deal with this right now. And then I'll just go back to watching YouTube because it's like, okay, I you can stop anytime you want. Yeah, I mean you can do that with fucking Netflix and stuff too. It just feels wrong, right?
SPEAKER_02Uh it feels wrong when you're in the middle of a TV show to be like, especially when you're in the middle of an episode. I and I get it, because it like, oh man, there's I'm halfway through this episode, but I'm so tired. I'm just done. I don't want to deal with this shit right now. Yeah. I get it. I did that with Teen Wolf. I'm watching through Teen Wolf again, and I'm finally on season six. And I looked at it and I was just like, turned it off when there was like 21 minutes left of an episode. And then I slept for like two hours and then I got woke up, and I was just like, I'm not even kidding. I mean mugged the TV when I got up. I'm like, well, I guess I'll drink some water and wait for myself to get tired. Watch more of that episode of Cane Wolf, but it was an episode I didn't like either. So it wasn't like it was a first time seeing the episode where I'm really excited, like, what's happening next?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And I was like, uh. And now they're I'm on the final season because I and here's why I started re-watching Teen Wolf. I want to watch the movie again. But I want to watch it all in order because they're talking about doing yet uh I think uh Tyler Posey is working on two different scripts for two more teen movies that Paramount might actually pick up because the Teen Wolf movie following from the Teen Wolf TV show actually did really good.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, okay. I I didn't even know that they had made a Teen Wolf movie based on the television series, not the actual. It's on Paramount Plus. Um Paramount was great. The TV show is supposed to be the same character, right? Not Marty McFly. I don't remember the fucking name.
SPEAKER_02It is not the same as it is not the same character.
SPEAKER_00It's not the same storyline, it's not any of that because it's uh it's basically Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
SPEAKER_02Where it's a little comedic, where it's a little bit dramatic. Um, and it's um the supernatural is real. It's not like, whoa, dude, this weird thing happened, so we're gonna surf on cars. Like I don't remember. Teen Wolf was just a big comedy shtick when I was a kid.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So when MTV brought out the Teen Wolf TV show, they did it a little more serious. Like I said, it's more like a uh supernatural drum com. So it it's somewhere in between uh supernatural, the TV series, okay, and Teen Wolf. It like the actual movie. So it blends that comedy a little bit because there are times where it's funny. I would say overall it's yeah, it's supernatural drama.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02The only hard time I have with it, and I agree with my partner on this, is that the the intimate scenes in there. You know, my brain knows how old these actors are. My brain, like the first time I watched through this stuff, obviously, you know, 15 years ago, it didn't bug me as much because I was like, Yep, that was me in high school. Get laid, get laid, get laid. Okay. But as the kids are getting older, like it was one thing when they were showing, like, mmm, when they were 16, but now it's like full on.
SPEAKER_00They're showing double penetration.
SPEAKER_02Never knowing with snaps. Like they've like, yeah, they've shown some uh kind of aggressive scenes, but you have to keep in mind that at this point in the show, most of them are 18, most of them are graduating, so you don't feel as gross, but some of the scenes you just feel really gross watching because it's like even though I know the actors at the time were in their 20s, yeah. It's just it's or or you know, their late teens, early 20s, and it was still just but, anyways, um I don't get weird about out about stuff like that. I don't generally get weirded out about it, but it really creeps my partner out. I'm like, uh, okay, but you ever watch the show The Order? It it only got like two seasons, but I think my partner's seen all of it and I've seen part of it, I think.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I the first season of it was quite good, the second season of it was kind of meh, but I think that's what my partner said too.
SPEAKER_02And you know, and it's funny because I'm not willing to try new things too often because I've been so disappointed. And it's like um, you know, it's like these movie trailers, even these TV trailers. Most TV shows anymore are 21 minutes long. Why do you need to give me a five-minute TV trailer?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Like, what the fuck? Oh, so you want me to come sit there so I just watch 12 minutes of of fucking commercials?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So then I get five minutes of new contents. Oh, he got slapped for being stupid. Sweet.
SPEAKER_00That was something that Chuck always complained about. Yeah. He's like, I don't need a fucking five-minute recap on the goddamn fucking 15-minute episode, motherfucker. It's like, what it's like, fair enough, yeah. Last time. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Last time Alan As the World Turns. Yeah. You know, like it's just like, no. It's it's funny. I now think about this. It took me 15 years to try Dresden. Now I'm addicted, and I love Dresden. And I want Jim Butcher to lean forward and choke himself if he ever thinks about killing off Dresden before 25 full books.
SPEAKER_00Just saying. It would be kind of one of the series that I follow has The Demon Accords. Um the author, I I think he's at like book 21 or something like that. Okay. And he just started a new series that um it looks like, because I have the the first book of it hasn't come out yet, but from the title and like subtitle, uh-huh. It looks like it's going to be about the children of the people from the first series.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00Um, and I want to see that, but at the same time, I'm kind of like, well, what are you doing with this other series? Right. Um, because I mean he's kind of like I said before, the the series starts out kind of urban fantasy and like maybe Spider-Man level of abilities. Not even quite Spider-Man, more like more like Daredevil. Okay. Okay. Um but by the later books, the main three characters are like Superman, Wonder Woman, and fucking uh uh no uh uh the sorcerer the sorcerer supreme fucking Oh Doctor Strange Doctor Strange. They're on that fucking level. And so it's like you know what?
SPEAKER_02The only reason why you said no to Batman is because you think Ben Affling.
SPEAKER_00No, I was no, because the dude's a wizard, not fucking He's a pinball wizard. Sorry.
SPEAKER_02Actually, he could be a pinball wizard because he could control the mechanics and he could control the machine to I mean I'm just I'm hard pressed to try a lot of new things because like most of the time I've had people go, oh, you like Buffy? You should totally watch Warehouse 13, it's awesome. I mean, it's okay. Those two are kind of or that other one with Joshua Jackson, not flash forward, not I don't remember he did a supernatural one that was on Q13 or Fox or whatever. And oh you'll oh you love Buffy, oh you'll love this, and it's just like yeah. And but I've also had people go, oh, you've seen some Warehouse 13, you should totally watch Dawson Screak. Why? What the fuck? Oh, you saw 902 and oh one episode of 902.0, oh you gotta watch Dawson Screak as the world turns and Gilmore Girls.
SPEAKER_00Oddly, I kind of like the Gilmore girls. I'm fucking over there, yeah.
SPEAKER_02No, that's not it. That's that's that's not it. Where were these recommends 20 years ago when this shit was on the air? Yeah now I'm I'm not everybody evolves. There's an evolution every human has. Your core can be who you are, it can be the same person. Charmed. Oh, I love the original charmed. The original. I've never watched the original. I have zero desire to watch the new charmed because is it still on? Nah. I think it's like I think it has like three two or three years or something. Two or three seasons. Something. I don't know. I haven't see here's the biggest problem is I don't have regular television, I don't have regular cable. I'm streaming. Yeah. So, you know, you gotta give me a recommend that I can actually follow. So, what can I watch? Buffy. So let me tell you what, I tried to re-watch some Buffy, and I'm like I never really watched Buffy.
SPEAKER_00I've I've seen maybe three or four episodes. I probably seen more uh I think you'd actually and even that I didn't watch a whole lot of.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I've seen Angel, I saw Angel from beginning to end. Don't ask me exactly how it ends. I don't really remember. I've seen Buffy from beginning to end twice. I don't remember how it really ends because Buffy's been off the air for 20 years, 24 years, a long time.
SPEAKER_00I miss you, Salah Michelle English motherfucker. I miss you, Sarah Michelle Geller.
SPEAKER_02Um, excuse me, if you don't know, she's a modern woman. She has now decided after 20 years of marriage, she's gonna go by Sarah Michelle Prince. It is legally her name now. I mean, okay. She's been married to her husband for like 20, 22 years. It's about time.
SPEAKER_00Okay, cool.
SPEAKER_02I am sad that the the Buffy Rue boot would have been so good, and I am so sad it got canceled because she was going to be in it.
SPEAKER_00It would have been cool if she was like the watcher or whatever. No, she was gonna be like the mom of the newslayer. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_02You know, I mean, it's just like, I don't know, it's it's so funny, but every human goes through this evolution in life, and it's just like where I would not touch Jim Butcher with a 10-foot pole 15 years ago because they're no Dean Kuntz. Now I'm just like, there's room in my heart for Dean Kuntz. I think I've kicked Stephen King out of it. Minus the it series. Minus the It series, just because I have not, I didn't enjoy the Gunslinger or the Tower series, none of that. It just I didn't like it. That's just how it is. It's not for everybody, just like I'm not for everybody, I'm just for the right people.
SPEAKER_00I'm for everybody. Shush. Everybody loves me.
SPEAKER_02But Dean Koontz. Dean Koontz is always going to be my favorite writer, I think. And but I also think now with the evolution of who I am as a person and as a ugh, I'm growing up. It's so disgusting to become an adult. Um, but I also, because I love Dean Koontz and I love how reading his stuff gives me hope. Always gives me hope. And at first, when I was first reading Dresden, I was intrigued by the fact that here's a self-depreciating bastard, but I didn't understand why he was so self-depreciating. So I had to get into a story more. And now I like, I literally want to send love letters to Harry Dresden as a friend and be like, love yourself more. You're worth more, man. Who gives a shit that you got the winter night mantle? You're a badass. Own it, motherfucker. I I excuse my language. I I want to send him letters, and Harry Dresden only exists probably in in in the never never. In the never never, which is like in dimension 1052 Earth 989. I don't know. You know what I'm saying? But Larry Korea, see, you know what's turned me off of Larry Korea is that somebody wanted to tell me all about Monster Hunster International that wasn't you. Somebody else tried to just and that becomes a big thing for me. When somebody says to me, and not in a oh, you should check this out way like you do, but when somebody else involved in the friendship circle says, you have to watch this or you have to read this because you have to understand what we're talking about. Don't listen to that because that's garbage, but this is the only way. That's don't tell me what's garbage. So I could fucking do armpit fart noises, and that might be super entertaining for somebody, and it might not be else for somebody else. So let me read about it. And then when I said, Oh, I'm not quite understanding what that's about, then they wanted to tell me all about the whole book, and I'm like, Well, you just told me the whole book, so what the fuck's the point? Yeah, I don't have toleration for that.
SPEAKER_00You might consider borrowing your audiobook files? Of course I might. I mean, I I have physical copies of several of the books. I would love to check one out because I'm not touching riffs, it scares me. Not the book book, the audiobooks. Yeah, yeah. I have CDs for a couple of them. Um Monster Hunter Alpha is amazing. It's about Earl Harbinger, who's like not the main character, but he's the boss of the main character. Right.
SPEAKER_02And I would just like to start somewhere at the beginning.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02If you have the first one, I'd love to listen to it. Like, why are the planes flying so low, dude? I am not I am not cool. That's like the third one I've seen go by. And when I can almost read your tail numbers, that's too low.
SPEAKER_00Because we're on the flight path for the main international airport in this region.
SPEAKER_02Fuck them. We're not they're not supposed to be flying, we're not supposed to be part of that flight path. They're not supposed to be coming this close to our area. They need to stay a little more north. Get the fuck out of here, man.
SPEAKER_00Um, but I was gonna say you might want to check out Larry Curry's as far as I know, it was his first series that he wrote. Um I mentioned it earlier, the Grem Noir Chronicles. Right, right. And it's kind of like the magic system is a lot more of a hard magic. In fact, the very first book is called Hard Magic. Um, it's more of a hard magic system, which means that the magic is more it's set and it is not moving. Yeah, it's more well defined. Um, and it's like you can't do this with it, you can only do that kind of a lot of it.
SPEAKER_02That's why I like Harry, because there's a little flexibility and love there.
SPEAKER_00There is flexibility in it, but each person basically has there are exceptions to this, but pretty much if you're a magic user, you have a certain specific type of magic that you can do. Okay, and it's it's more like superpowers, but it's magic. Okay. So, like if you are a uh what are a torch, then you have fire magic, and you can sense magic, you can sense fire, you can control fire, you can create fire, blah blah blah. Um the main character, I can't remember his name right now, but anyway, the main character um is what is referred to as a heavy, Jake Sullivan. Okay, um, and the heavies have gravity manipulation abilities. Okay, and so usually these people are they're often not very smart. Um and they're usually employed in like construction work because they can lift really much. Because they're like me, heads. Gotcha. Yeah, um, and he, the main character, he was in World War I, and he was like a heavy machine gunner because he could literally pick up the machine gun and walk around shooting it. Um and anyway, but now he's a private investigator, okay, and he's investigating shit. Um and he ends up joining this group called the Gremlin Wars. Anyway, but yeah, the the magic is very kind of set in how it functions. Um the main character is a bit of an exception because he's experimented with his magic in order to kind of bend how it works into other ways.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00Um, which isn't a okay, I I'm a gravity manip gravity manipulator, but I'm doing healer stuff. Sure. Instead, it's I utilize the gravity manipulation to alter my physiology and stuff like that. So he's stronger and tougher than even a normal uh heavy is, uh, because he's basically used it on himself to manipulate his body. And it's like that's something that usually doesn't happen. People would usually are like, okay, I make fire. Well, they don't try to burn themselves to make themselves resistant to fire because they're like, eh, that hurts. But this dude has done shit like that to himself.
SPEAKER_02You said I made fire, and I instantly my brain instantly goes to castaway. I made fire! I am a god. I don't know. Like, I I would like to check out Monster Hunters International. Obviously, I tried to find it at the library system, can't find it. I tried to find it on audiobooks, I can't find it right now. Um, and I have actually looked through a couple of different, believe it or not, books still do exist. I've actually looked through there and haven't seen it, but you know, I've also got to remember to actively look for, and when I say Korea, I think of the spelling of South Korea.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. He actually jokes about that. And so he has a series called Tom Stranger. Okay. Uh, interdimensional insurance salesman. And he fucking uh he talks about how there's a whole bunch of different Larry Koreas in a bunch of different realities, and one of them uh ended up becoming the richest person on earth, and when he did, he bought North and South Korea and renamed them.
SPEAKER_02Well, it's interesting because worldwide we know it is South Korea, and we know North Korea and South Korea, but now they have they don't adopt South Korea. It is Korea. I mean there's Korea and there's North Korea.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. And because they're the real Korea. I'm sure North Korea considers themselves to be Korea.
SPEAKER_02Hey, look. Korea, not North Korea, but Korea is the home to BTS. So obviously they're the right Korea. I'm just saying. Um, you know, obviously, like I said, it it's it's very off-putting to me. I mean, and obviously, when the individual who was just like, oh, you must, you must, you must, or you can't understand a conversation. Yeah. Like that's the thing that gets me was back in the day, somebody would tell me I couldn't possibly understand a conversation if I didn't read it. I needed to read it and just be one of the cool kids. Let me tell you what, I see, there's another motherfucker. That one's even lower. Uh I hate planes with a passion. Nothing made me happier than when there was hardly any planes during COVID. I was so happy. It was so quiet. It didn't stress. Even the military planes, there was not a lot. I mean, we're right in the flight path of yeah, you know. Uh, anyways, um, but that's the that's the thing with me is you can't tell me I have to do something and don't tell me I gotta do this or that or the other to be a couple people part of the I'm in my own club, I'm my coolest kid I know. Yeah, and you know, and I am one of the cool kids. Why? Because I'm nice to other humans. Why? Because I have a kind heart. Why because I said so.
SPEAKER_00There was another series that I really liked, but it kind of petered out fairly quickly. It was called Onset. Okay. And the dude who wrote it, he was like, the impetus to this was my niece asked me, what if what if uh did she say Harry Dresden or Harry Potter? One or the other. What if they never got discovered and never went to magic school? And so that was kind of the impetus for it. Well, the only one who went to magic school was Harry Potter. Harry Dresden got magical training, though. But that's not school.
SPEAKER_02He got magically beaten by his uncle Justin.
SPEAKER_00That's because in that setting there is no magic school. You get trained as an apprentice, which is the old way of fucking doing it.
SPEAKER_02Well, you very specifically said school, so it's gotta be Harry Potter.
SPEAKER_00So anyway. Onset. So the main character Who writes it? I don't remember. Well, there's only like four books, I want to say in the series, and then he just stopped doing it. I maybe he maybe there's more now, but the last time I checked, there was only like three or four. Um, and the so the main character, he has magic innately, and he doesn't find out about it until he's like 30 or something.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
Rewatch..and maybe reboot?
SPEAKER_00And it's because he gets attacked by a vampire and then his magic kicks in, and then the magic police basically show up as he fought off the vampire. Yeah. And they're like, How the fuck did you do that? You're a regular human, and then they're like, Oh, well, actually you're a wizard, Harry.
SPEAKER_02Uh well, you know, and it what's funny is the Dresden Files, you know, in in one of those books, and I I don't remember, it's it's closer to one of the last like four or five books. It's it's after Harry is part of the Grey Council or the White Council, the no the the gray cloaks.
SPEAKER_00Oh, he's one of the um Grey Wardens.
SPEAKER_02The wardens, thank you. So he's in there and he actually talks about how unfair it is that you're gonna kill these kids that had no idea this was coming. This is ridiculous. Yeah. Because we don't have a system in place to where we can teach these kids right from wrong. They're gonna make mistakes. They're like, because especially since it was a buildup to when they were talking about, like when Fritz he starts training Fritz.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Because he's just like, I mean, but Or when he first discovers Fritz.
The Wrap Up
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And it's just like, and Fritz made some questionable decisions, but they weren't all necessarily on the wrong side. But like he says, and any any other person, any other warden who'd found it, he would have been beheaded. Yeah, yeah. You know, for you know, basically just trying to survive and find, you know, get food for him and the kids he was protecting. So, you know, I I don't know. I definitely need to check out Monster Hunters. Onset sounds really interesting as well. Uh, what I have figured out is because um because of my schedule now, mostly I have to be able to do an ebook. I either have to have an audiobook that I can do here at the house, or I need to do an ebook, um, because I just don't have I don't have the ability to sit and hold a book and read it. I need to be able to flip screens or multi-task not multitask because we know we don't do that, but quick quick task rotation.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um just because uh it's gonna be a while until I can read again.
SPEAKER_00Like yeah, the onset series, I don't know if they actually ever published physical copies of it. Yeah, but it should be yeah, they do have the ebook and obviously the audiobooks.
SPEAKER_02And I'll tell you what goes on with the ebooks. I can read an ebook fast.
SPEAKER_00I mean, that is one of the good things with the it's kind of problematic, but at the same time, that is one of the good things with the um Kindle Unlimited because it's like I don't know, it's like 12 bucks a month or something like that.
SPEAKER_02Library's free, you know, and I can check out like a whole bunch of books.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, with Kindle Unlimited, you have unlimited number of books per month. So as fast as you can read them, you can read as many. You don't have to fucking turn that in, all that right, but I and they have more books in their library than what the actual library has.
SPEAKER_02Right. Uh credit card debt, me need free. What am I gonna do? Pay bills and pay off debt, or fuck it, I want a Kindle Unlimited.
SPEAKER_00No, I did turn on, I I did unpause all of my subscriptions the other day.
SPEAKER_02And that that, you know what? And we're gonna pause. We'll we'll we'll end this because this episode I actually want to talk to you about something else, but we got into the idea of different lines, different stories. Monster Hunter International, I know it's one of your favorites. Yes, I know it's absolutely one of your favorites, and I love the fact that you wear the patches with pride. And over the years, we've seen people, some people know what it is, and other people are like, oh, that's really cool. I don't get it, but that's really cool. And so it's definitely we've so we've got some recommends out there for all those other lonely Dresden people who are just waiting for Outlaw to come out in May, so we can read that. Yeah, and then you know, I need to, I actually need to make sure I put it on hold while I'm thinking about it. Um, and then of course, mirror, mirror. Hurry up, butcher! Come on now, but mirror, chop, chop, chop, chop, come on, one of your biggest fans here and schnell, schnell. Schnirt, schnirt, schnirt. Uh, anyways, um, but Monster Hunters, it's a really good recommend by Larry Korea. I don't think that too much of his personal politics bleed into his books too much, do they?
SPEAKER_00Uh actually not really. I mean, yes and no. Because of the nature of what's going on in the books, um, it kind of does intrinsically not not him saying you should be this, yeah. But rather by the nature of situationally, yeah. Um, you kind of need to be able to own guns in order to fucking harm. 100%. I will never ever take away from this.
SPEAKER_02Well, the only the only thing I have hard problems with is hard right or hard left.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Because it's like, look, listen, Linda, there's gotta be a middle compromise to everything.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02You know, there's no way to make everybody happy, but you can you can come up with a situation, like maybe we'll just take one state, like two states. We'll take two states and be like, go over there if you're far left. Then we'll take two states and we'll be like, go over there if you're far right. And then the rest of us can live happily in the middle. Anyways, um, so we'll talk about that more in a little bit, but we gotta let these guys go. It's been a long, it's been a long day, and there's shit to do, but we hope you find a good book recommend. And and I want people to read more. I don't care or or listen more to stories because I don't care if you read it, I don't care if you listen to it. Give yourself an escape for stress. And that's the one thing that books and stories can do. And it's not just about letting your brain rot with the TV. Yeah, you know, that's the one thing that I feel that getting acclimated to going back to work and everything. Um, I feel like uh the first month was like so difficult because it was just nap as napping and brain rot. And now I can actually stay awake. Yeah, my first day off of the week, I couldn't stay awake. I I literally, it was so crazy. It was just like I'd be up for an hour. I'd I don't even know if I'd get a cup of coffee in me and I'd pass out. Um, but I really, if people love butcher, I think they'll like Korea too, because you do. And it's it's another, it's another supernatural world. So it's another way to look at the supernatural and get some good ideas on how we're gonna fight this shit when the apocalypse happens. Some good food for thought. Anyways, read a book, have a great day.
SPEAKER_00Later.
SPEAKER_02Bye.
SPEAKER_01Okay, everybody. That's all the time we have for today. So I want to thank you for stopping by to enjoy the conversation. Uh, we're glad you're here, and please share and share again, and share some more. And if you haven't already, subscribe. We'll be having another chat and another cup soon. We'll talk to you then. Look forward to seeing you.
