I'm pretty sure you could actually play around, and if you won, you got something, and if they won, they took something. Yeah, I I I I think, because I I had a friend who played it quite a bit. Yeah. And they were and I remember he was in the living room and he was playing, and I remember him standing up and he was like, Boom, bitch. I was just like, wow, it's just a video game. Calm down, bro. But anyways, how are you doing today? I'm doing alright. How are you doing? I'm doing good. Like the neighborhood's full of construction again, so it's kind of noisy, and it's just like, you know, it was so peaceful, like six months of hardly any noise after they built that house, and now they're back at it again.

Because it it's either they didn't they didn't want to spend the money on the building permits to build an actual garage. Yeah, fair. Um or something along those lines, because what they did basically they built a carport but with a fancier roof. Yeah, and and a full garage door. Yeah. And then they left the sides open and people could just walk in there from the alleyway.

And it's really, it's it's really quite an interesting list. So the list kind of when I looked it up, it was just like there was some caveats to it. Like there are 160 plus movies that are associated with here, but like to make the list of like a certain amount had to be filmed here or whatever.

And so, and I'm and I think it was like at least 25% of the film had to be filmed in the state.

So it was really interesting. But uh, so the highest grossing one for the state of Washington, one guess, what do you think it was?

No. Okay. That only that yeah, no, that did not really get that did not make a lot of money. Not really. Not compared to what's on this list, and there wasn't, it was one of those ones where um there was some photography, like, say anything, there was some photography done here, but there wasn't a whole massive quantity of filming done here.

I mean, that's just kind of Hollywood magic for you, right? Um, so well, there's there's two that are like there's one and two. Number one, can you even guess it's been it's a movie that came out within the last 20 years.

It it is definitely the most popular associated with uh Washington, yeah, that's but it is by far not the biggest earner. Um and is too old, also. Um, yeah, I don't know. Yeah. Um so number one is the Twilight saga, the Eclipse.

Eclipse, you know, so Eclipse was actually filmed here in Washington.

So of all the Twilight movies, it there was that one, and then part of Breaking Dawn 2 that has most of the photography here.

But but Eclipse was the biggest earner for a Washington State movie, and that's $300 million. Which doesn't sound like a lot of money, but when you go back to like 2008, 2010, 12 range, you know, and you think about inflation, that's a lot of freaking money.

I also always used to think that maybe Return of the Jedi was filmed here because of all the forest scenes. A lot of that is like old growth.

Yeah, but you know, down in California, they have a lot of those redwoods as well.

And it's so we get a lot of filming in Washington, specifically for forest scenes.

For the forest scenes, and depending on which side of the cascade you're on, which side of the mountain range you're on, whether you're gonna get the morning fog or the night fog and all that. So it it's kind of interesting because we have really beautiful scenery, but I agree to the extent because I'm very proud of my state, my home state, mostly. Mostly politics aside. Politics aside, I'm very proud of where I'm from. We're known as the Evergreen State for a reason. And you know, um, so I agree with what one reviewer uh that was talking about movies was saying, like it's all relative. So for us, it's just like, yes, we have some stunning beauty, but you can go to Wyoming in the winter and get some stunning photography.

Yeah, like I was saying last time, there's beautiful places everywhere you go. If you look hard enough, you're gonna find a really cool vista somewhere.

Absolutely. And Washington and Oregon, Washington, Oregon, and uh British Columbia, Canada are all considered interchangeable as far as the scenery. It's all very similar. We're on the same corridor, we're in the ring of fire. Um, so it's really interesting which way they do it and why it would be attracted one way or the other. It's kind of interesting. But so yeah, number one was the Twilight Saga Eclipse, which happens to be a I get it because that's where she starts making her decisions. She starts descending.

I mean, do you really want to be the last person on the planet that when the planet implodes or explodes or gets hit by another planet and everything else is die, you just float in space and live there like with nothing to do? No. Immortality is not that cool, if you ask me. It's interesting. It's an interesting theory. But when you look at the big picture stuff, for for people who are not completely introverts, the idea of being immortal and leaving behind the people you care the best most about is just like unfathomable. It's just like, oh so, anyways, uh, but you were right when you were talking about back in the day, sleepless in Seattle. We held number one up until up until Eclipse. Uh Sleepless in Seattle was number one, earning 227 million box office dollars. Which, you know, that was filled like it's so crazy when you start.

Yeah. Well, the movie was shot on a $21 million budget. And so they made tenfold, beyond tenfold. They made like ten and a half times what they put into it, or however you'd say it, right?

Well, yeah, well, you also have to think that one of the reasons why they need such high um amounts of money to make back their money is because less than half of their money oftentimes is the budget for the film itself.

Most of the money actually is in advertisement. And insurance. Yeah. So most of the money that gets spent is not actually making the movie, it's other stuff.

So a lot of times people are like, well, this movie cost 10 million to make and they made 50 million, they lost money because the advertisement and all that other shit costs so much fucking money.

Yeah, it's it's an insane way they look at it. But to me, if you can look at a number and times it by 10 and you get your outcome, it's it's it's it's a total win.

But of course, I also think if you spend five million dollars on a movie and you make 25 million, and you know, anything fourfold or more should be profitable. And it, you know, but I think some of the movies on the list of the most profitable ones here in Washington are probably based off the fact, and they don't advertise it, but it's probably putting in the back of your head, thinking residual monies as well. Because I was just like films filmed in Washington.

Yeah, because what they make in the box office is usually not the full amount of money that they end up making.

Yeah, and and what's super crazy is one of the best films on the list, best for me, because it was something different for the time, um, but also one of the worst is you look at practical magic. It's got Sandy Brulock or Sandra Bullock, and you've got Nicole Kidman in it. So it was put out in 1998, almost 30 years ago. Yeah. So crazy. And it was about witches, and it wasn't, it wasn't like um hocus pocus-esque.

It was it was really about you know, these witches who were in self-preservation mode. That's all it was about, was taking care of themselves and their family. But so $75 million budget, and it only made 98 million before it was pulled from the box office. But now here we are 28 years later. I actually saw that in the theater. Yeah, well, here we are all these years later. They've done a practical magic too, and it's still got a huge cult following, just like Hocus Pocus. So it's it's it's interesting.

Oh, really? It's not that bad. It's it's it's it's pretty good. I mean, of course, I like the first one better because I just love how they sweep everything out of the house. Shoo, shoo, shoo, yeah, go! I love it. Because I'm like, oh, if life was just that easy when somebody pisses you off, you know, it would be great. Um, but so a movie that I did not realize was actually filmed here. Uh, and I think it's because there's a lot of stuff that gets left on the hush in the download, right?

And plus, when we're also going back, you know, before the invention of the internet and why, you know, wide use of cell phones, it takes a lot longer for information to get around. Yeah. But a Johnny Depp movie was actually filmed here. And I was like, oh, I remember back in the day

Sleepless In Seattle

they were talking about it, but I never knew if it actually ended up happening because there was just talks about it, and that's how where they left it. There's, you know, Johnny Depp and Mary Stuart Masterson and talks to start a movie to film for a couple weeks in Spokane. But they did it. Benny and June was filmed in Spokane.

With Johnny Depp. Um, and that is so crazy. It's an unknown budget on there.

And uh, but it grossed $23 million.

So, but if you're going back, Johnny Depp 1993, you know, it probably was on less than a five million dollar budget. Yeah. I mean, Spokane is, you know, pretty cheap.

Talking and being silly and you know, eating at a diner and all that shit. Anyways, uh, so I found it fascinating that nobody, you know, nowhere's got an answer for like how much was the budget on this. And part of that could be because like, you know, how Arnold like did that one movie where he worked to get twins. Yeah, like twins where he worked and he got no upfront money and he got money on the back end, and it's like one of his most profitable movies. Yeah, it could be the same thing for um three fugitives, Nick Knolly and Martin Short. Uh, I don't know, but so that one, like we talked about before, has that scene down in Union Station. That movie made 40 million dollars. And it was considered wildly successful, you know, way back in the day.

You know, um, I love you to death. You and I talked about this. Did we talk about it off mic about the story of that one?

So so that one of the true story. It's yeah, it's roughly based on a true story, and it's hilarious that the actual guy the story's based about comes out and he was just like, everything is accurate except for these three things. There's no huge embellishment. Yeah, it's it, and so that was a wild thing, and so it was an incident that happened in 1983 in uh in Allentown, Pennsylvania, uh with the Toto family, TOTO. And what's interesting about that is there as of 2023, that was the last update they had for the family, they were still married, they were still together, and he never cheated on her again. Thank Jesus. You know, but it was it was interesting. So uh yeah, and then the ring, yeah, the ring had a majority of its stuff, uh majority of it filmed here. We talked about that because of you know the scenery and the eeriness that we get here, which a lot of people, if you've never been, if people have not been to the Pacific Northwest, especially in like late fall through early spring, like, dude, our coastal areas can look creepy as shit. I love it. I yeah, right. Even even where we live, because we're you know, we're only uh our elevation's only like what 802 feet or something like that.

Even on a on a really weird day, we can get that fog that's just I was driving home a few weeks ago and we had winter fog at night, which is creepy as shit. But it was like I was driving, I'm like, and I had a senior moment where I went, okay, take a breath. Because I was just like, did I miss my turn to go home? Because it was so thick, none of it looked familiar.

And now that I'm working essentially to where I'm not getting home until 9:30, 10 at night, it's like I was so happy when the spring weather really started. Cause I'm like, at least it's somewhat light when I go home now. Cause that scared in February, that scared the shit out of me because I was I almost pulled over to call my partner because like it was so thick, I could not see the porch lights on the houses. Yeah, I couldn't see the street addresses, and I'm like, this doesn't make any sense. I've traveled a mile and a half from work and now I feel almost completely lost. It was eerie.

So, but yeah, the ring uh did pretty good. Uh $249 million. Uh one of the movies that I didn't even know was filmed around here was Dante's Peak.

Practical Magic: The Long Build

that at this point in American cinema history, worldwide cinema here, we have movies that have made a billion dollars.

You know, we have franchises that have grossed a couple billion dollars. Yeah. And it's like super amazing, you know, because it's like we're just like, oh, you know, it's just measly one hundred and ninety-seven million. Yeah. And and you can hardly get a movie made for that nowadays. I mean, they're having to find alternate ways to do stuff because AI is such a huge factor. People aren't going to the theaters as much. A lot of things are going direct anymore. And it's just like there was a new movie that came out, and my partner looked at or adapted to rent it and went $30 for a 90-minute movie. It was out in the theater, but you could watch it online. Ah, yes. And I'm like, that's crazy because it literally is not saving any money. Well, I mean, oh, I'm sorry, it saves the gas and four dollars. And the hundred dollars for popcorn. You don't just don't eat popcorn at the theater because it's just flavored coconut butter. So, anyways, I was just like flavored coconut butter. They use uh coconut oil and they give it butter flavoring. Okay, yeah, they do a lot of that. I mean, hey, that's a little healthier, but but when you look at investment to return ratio, uh one of the best ones we have in this state is an officer and a gentleman, 1982. 7 million dollars. It's it's estimated between five and seven million dollars to make the movie, and that includes like local money they spent for like housing and stuff. So since it said it ranged between five to seven million, I just went with a high end of it. Okay, so that made a hundred and eighty three million dollars. God damn. It so it was 190 total, but you take that seven million out, it's a hundred and eighty-three million dollar profit. Yeah. And it's just like, and people wonder why Richard Gere didn't have to do very many movies. Because I'm pretty sure one of the caveats for Gere, I think he I think he got residuals on that. I mean, they all get residuals, but I think he had some back, I think he had some different action on that. I don't want to say backdoor action because that sounds so fucking wrong, bro. So yeah, it it was really interesting to actually give him the rumors around here.

The the thing about it is, is I don't care. He's a handsome guy, you know, he didn't give Cindy Croff or no babies. So she went off and got herself a different guy who did, and her kids are ethereal looking. Her her daughter, her her daughter Kaya, is a model, and she's very almost tall and thin, so almost elfish. And she just I saw this picture of her, and she's just got like this frozen face, and she's just like, and I'm just like, oh, you look kind of like the old. You remember the old days? You go back into the 18, 17, 1800s where they took the pictures of dead people, they did their death poses. Yeah, that's what it reminded me of. Her just sitting there going, huh, like somebody just backhanded her. I don't know, but she they're very ethereal, they're not cherub, but they're really thin, they're kind of elfish and cute girl, you know, cute girl. I think she's dating like some guy now, who knows? Well, I don't want to say the last because it's not like I seek out like finding out certain things. It's just when I research a when I research a movie or TV show or something in pop culture history, you know, I it just it's the Wikipedia spiral.

And so it's just like, so I know that this person dated that person at some point, but are they still dating? I don't know.

Just like um, so during our break, I started, I haven't finished it because I feel like I feel like it's being almost misrepresented. But I started watching the Michael Jackson documentary that's on Netflix now. Okay. And the first part of it, I'm just like Michael Jackson and no, hey, Michael, no. Like it's it's it's interesting because the first part of it, it's just like you get the feeling that the first accusation is kind of like it's what we would see as inappropriate, but somebody who's very childlike and didn't have a childhood and just wants to have friends and hang out with their friends and do all the things like all the kids did that he knew when he grew up. They all got to have their sleepovers and stuff. Like so much of it sounds so innocent. And you have this, the big one, like in 2000, was it 2003 or something? So 10 years after the original one. The original accusation was 93. Then you get the new one in 2003, and it's so odd because the family who accuses him of doing this, um, they're like, we he brought them into Neverland Ranch, had them live there for free, protected them from the paparazzi, they had their own place to stay there, and all of a sudden it was just like, oh yeah, he totally did all this stuff, and it was just weird.

So I made it to the point where I'm in episode two, and there's a guy there, and he's talking about I like he's he's making a very broad statement that he had a friend who was very close with Michael Jackson, and he'd worked at the Jackson, he'd worked at Neverland for like a year or something or whatever. And then his friend's like, oh, stash this stuff for me. And it doesn't make sense. Like, none of it, like I have to rewind and restart the episode because it doesn't make sense to me why this guy's going, oh, I totally know Michael Jackson's guilty. And like, you what you've just described, like literally what he describes is uh a consensual bisexual relationship between a grown ass adult and Michael Jackson.

No, but there are a lot of these places that do this to try to persuade you to come come live the naturalist lifestyle.

You know, and so I don't know. So I have to I have to watch more of it, but it's just like there's two things in life, and I'm sure one day when I die, somebody's gonna come over to me and say, look, this really happened or this really didn't. I'll find out for sure when I die, whatever. But there's two things I don't believe in life that I don't believe ever happened. And and I'm I apologize for anybody who feels differently. I don't think Michael Jackson molested a bunch of kids, like little kids. Do I think he may have had an inappropriate relationship with somebody who became his assistant who was in their 20s? He's a consenting adult, so how can it be inappropriate? Yeah, did he possibly a later teenage boy do something? Maybe I don't know, but I just can't see somebody who lived his life on camera, you know. And it's like so crazy. And then of course there was a local murder here where I'm just like, dude, no, I I know that bitch shot herself. She shot him and then she shot herself. It's not the other way around, but I'm not getting on mic on that one because the last time I expressed it, somebody somebody got really mad, and they were just, can you say that? Because I fucking knew him for 15 years.

I tried to read some of the article, but I was really tired about we're we're getting more of an economy, especially in the Pierce County area. Yeah. Um, and that's because of independent filmmakers uh coming together and doing things at uh the ground grand cinema. But who knows how far that's gonna go because then uh Bethel Temple, which is right by it, got burned up. So, you know, we'll have to see. But um, I did in fact uh look up somebody I know who's an actor, and uh yeah, they've been doing tons of stuff and trying to get into South and South, South by Southwest. And you know, if you have a passion for it, it's fine.

You know, I'm like uh so I occasionally now, not as much anymore because the dynamic has changed since one of their members has died. But uh so Neebs Gaming is a gaming group. They have videos on, and of course they were show their game videos on YouTube. Um, it's funny because uh Brett Triplett, who is Neebs himself, um, he's like he's always joking about the fact that they're actors. You can actually see them in The Walking Dead. They play zombies in The Walking Dead. Uh there remember RIP Thick 44 who passed away. He was actually a uh shop owner in Under the Dome. Okay. Stephen King. Uh okay. Stephen King's Under the Dome was a TV series that was on. Yeah. And um, but it was funny because he goes, I'm not an actor, sir. I'm an actor. And it's just like, if you have a passion for it and you love it, you might as well do it. You know, but yeah, like Bill, hey Bill, not Duncan, but Reed. Hey Bill, uh, you know, he's he I'm excited to see the project. He just got a big bigger contract, so I'm excited for him, and we'll see. It would be interesting to see a resurgence of filmmaking in Pierce County, in Washington, and get even bigger. Um, because I mean that's that's probably the coolest thing about living in Tacoma when you know, when I was a kid, is that I love you to death, three fugitives was all all filmed here, and I still remember my mom being pissed. I'm like, yeah, that's kind of different because it's not like it's set in modern times, it's older. Yeah, so that's always kind of a little interesting twist. And then just to see all of a sudden, it was like, it's like running up that hill, it's like, yeah, we got this. Oh, oops, hey foo. It just fell flat and asked. I haven't watched it, but you should check out the trailer for it because I think you'll get a kick out of it. Because maybe it's just because I'm Uber picky when I'm watching CGI or animated things. And what was fascinating is as I've gone, I I pay a little bit more attention to the Walking Dead as I walk through, as I watch through it, especially because knowing it's actually the producers of are getting like one step closer, and they're like, and even Andrew Lincoln's like, yeah, we're probably gonna have a Walking Dead 2.0. You know, we're probably gonna bring as many people back together as we can. And I think uh, like, I think that would be fucking great to see what's next, what happens next. Because they had this whole storyline where um when Rick reunites with Judith that was supposed to happen, and literally it got cut short because the kid who plays RJ is such, I mean, no offense to him, he just needs some finesse and some time, but he was such a horrible actor in that the one scene they they couldn't get him to pull through to bring the story together. So I think it would be great now that Kaylee uh Fleming, yeah, her name is Clay Kaylee Fleming, who played Judith, the the Judith that we know, not the baby Judith, but the Judith that we know. Um now that she's uh I think she's like 20, 21. I think it'd be great to bring her back. I mean, she's still a t little tiny girl, she's like four foot ten, but and a half and a quarter, but I think it would be great to bring it back together. But anyways, as I'm watching this, it's interesting because I finally caught it between season one and season, I think it was six, and I'm just like, hey, wait a minute. They filmed on that road before, but from the like it finally catches up in your brain because I'm not a super watcher, I just listen, but I was just like, hey, it was like, or maybe it was like season two and season five. So now I'm like really encouraged to actually re-watch because I want to see how many times they're on this freaking road, and it's now three times, and now it's three times. And the only reason why I know it's the exact same road is because of there's just like a couple of dead giveaways. Yeah, and I'm just like, yeah, because every tree, unless it's unless it's you know, mold made, trees are pretty individual and distinctive.

And then I'm like, then I'm like, I'm not really a horrible person if it's self-preservation. Yeah. But, anyways, so yep, I did the research. I found that to be really interesting. Specifically, it was Pierce County. Um, I I wanted to look up like the whole statewide thing, uh, but already got that answer. And that, of course, is the Twilight saga eclipse.

You know, and it's like fine, but it's not filmed where a lot of people think it's filmed, which is really kind of interesting. A lot of stuff that's filmed on our on our coastal towns are done in Port Angeles or Port Townsend.

Um, you know, and that's just because it's a lot easier. There's a lot less roads, a lot less traffic, a lot easier for them to set up and tear down and not make noise to disturb the peace. Yeah. You know, so it's pretty cool. Anyways, so next time we'll talk about the the whole state thing because it's it's fascinating. I probably should go ahead and instead of going, well, this state is also the same as this state and this state, I should probably organize it a little better. But I thought it was cool because there are so there's like some movies where like three or four states share them.

And I find that amazing because I'm like, if this is three states and say they make $300 million, right? I'm like, so technically that's only $100 million for you. Like, you didn't have a movie that did better than that. And I think that way because Washington has had so many states, have has had so many films that have done better than 100 million. Yeah.
