Welcome to the Jordan Reynolds Show, Rewrite the Rules, the podcast for women who are done living by someone else's idea of what their life should look like. I'm Jordan, a 31-year-old entrepreneur, world traveler, and wellness girly who refused to settle for a life that didn't feel like mine. Around here, we talk business, health, mindset, and freedom with real stories and honest behind the scenes. If you've ever felt like you were meant for more, you're in the right place. Let's rewrite the rules together. Welcome back to Rewrite the Rules, guys. This week's episode is one of those full circle moments. Over a decade ago, I met today's guest on an airplane, and we've stayed connected ever since. It's been so fun watching her grow into the incredible coach that she is today. In this conversation, we're talking about navigating life transitions, rediscovering who you are, the power of positive psychology, and how coaching can help you step into your next chapter with confidence. So let's get into it. Today's guest is none other than Miss Dana Wells. Okay, guys, welcome back to the show. I have someone that I'm super excited for you guys to meet today. Her name is Dana, and we actually met on an airplane about a decade ago, believe it or not. And I've loved seeing everything that she has been up to. So it would love for you to introduce yourself, Dana, and tell us a little bit more about you. Yeah, hey, Jordan. That's right.
SPEAKER_02It's been we just talking about maybe over a decade that we met on an airplane. We had a great conversation and uh we stayed in touch. And I've just adored watching you blossom and all the adventures that you have. And it's it's so amazing to come full circle and and share with you today a little bit about my journey and uh the coaching that I'm doing. My name is Dana Wells. I'm the founder of uh Sunshine Coaching Group, and I am a certified executive life transitions coach. And I work with I do work with one-on-one clients. I do a lot of group work. I am trained in positive psychology as a framework for my coaching clients, and I also use nature as a coaching tool. I love nature. I'm in Florida, so we get out outside all the time. That's amazing.
SPEAKER_01I love that. I'm excited. Tell us a little bit about what coaching with you looks like.
SPEAKER_02I I think I could best describe it by sharing my journey with coaching. So I first worked with my own coach in 2016. I was coming out of, I was coming out of a very difficult period, and my identity was shifting. And I it's weird, I intuitively knew that I wasn't flourishing. You know, I I I felt like I had gifts and I I just didn't know how to access them or where to put them. And so I hired a coach. I wasn't sure what I wanted out of it, but through working with her, I realized that I had a lot of creative gifts. And so I started writing. And um, since I've worked with her, writing has been an amazing tool for me for self-expression to to express my emotions. And also now that I've been doing that, it's it's very powerful because once you start journaling and you've done it for a couple of years, you look back and you realize, wow, wow, look at that growth, or you remember situations that you went through, and it helps you to it it helps to build resilience, but it also affirms the resilience. And so I knew coaching was a very powerful tool. So what when I approached, when I went to get trained as a coach, psychology, positive psychology has been something I've been very interested in all of my life. My degrees in psychology. And in about in around around 2017, I discovered positive psychology. I wasn't quite sure it it really appealed to me. I didn't quite know what I wanted to do with it, if I wanted to go back to school and go into therapy. It's positive psychology is about what's right, your strengths, what's what's going right for you instead of pathology. It doesn't look at what's wrong, the pathology to try to fix it. It looks at what's right. And so I was trained in that, and so coaching with me looks like discovering your strengths, the values that you have, and we look at where you've where that is working in your life, and we look at the gaps that you have right now, and how you how you can bridge that gap or close that gap utilizing the strengths and the values that you possess. And we're I I we we uncover those through a system uh called a VIA uh strengths finder. And um for me, and I I and I have a coach now too. A coach, a good coach should have a coach and should actually get coached by that coach. But what I've discovered is the method I was taught, and I and I'm an I'm an ICF coach, I'm an International Coaching Federation coach. We can talk a little bit more about that, but I follow I follow core competencies and uh ethics, the global governing body for coaching. But I think the the biggest thing for me as a coach is that it's this incredible safe space, and I I create this for my clients, a very trusted safe space where a client can use it to go very deep and access their intuitive wisdom. How often I'm I'm asking this as a question to you how often do you sit with a friend, a colleague, anyone, and you talk to them and they listen to you intensely and they ask you powerful questions to facilitate or to guide you to access that inner wisdom, to go really deep, you know, to have the have a stream of consciousness where you're identifying new beliefs or things that were stuck or are coming up, where you're discovering new ideas. That's that's what coaching with me is like. And that's that's what I've experienced too. And it can be, it's for me, it's magical. Sometimes I come, sometimes I have these breakthroughs, or I come, you know, or or I I witness a client have a breakthrough or come up with new ideas in the session. And sometimes it doesn't necessarily happen in the session, maybe it happens a day or two later, you know, between a session. And that's that's pretty powerful too.
SPEAKER_03That's amazing. I feel like, like to answer your question, I don't have those conversations for myself. I tend to find myself in conversations like that quite often when people are sharing things with me. I feel like I see your face right now. That is what happens with me. But I feel like I work with a lot of women as well. And I think just being, I don't know if you know the Enneagram.
SPEAKER_01A little bit? The Enneagram. Is it like a graph?
SPEAKER_03It's you'll love it. I'll share it with you after this. It's like a personality quiz. Essentially, like part of my personality is like driver, go, go, go. And I work with so many women that are similar, but if you're all the time just creating all the time and going, going, going, but you're really not going deep. Like there's going to be something that comes up that you need to really deal with and really go, I think, inward. I've found that to be true for myself as well. So I love that like you're doing that because it's so needed.
SPEAKER_01It is.
SPEAKER_02And um, you know, there's so many distractions, right? There let's just let's call it what it is, right? There's just so many distractions in our daily life, technology, media, other people. You know, there's just there's just so many things to think about, right? So a lot of so so most people aren't doing that quote unquote deep work, right? Where you just sit with an issue. I I I've learned through writing to you know access those areas of my consciousness that maybe I wouldn't necessarily be able to access in a conversation even with a friend, you know. And that's what that's what coaching does.
SPEAKER_01It helps you to access those very deep layers of thinking.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's it's so needed. I want to ask you, because I know that you know, you said that coaching came after you were really asking for just answers and really asking for divine guidance. Can you talk about that and what that looks like? Because I definitely think a lot of people are searching for something, but sometimes I think they don't really listen, you know.
SPEAKER_01I've never get the answer. Yeah, yeah. That's from the questionnaire that I filled out. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So I I'm trying to figure out I'm just I'm trying to think about the best places to start this. Like I think I think after I I after I worked with my coach, I started becoming much more aware and intentional about I became I I started becoming aware of things like my energy, what I liked, what I didn't like, what filled me up, what didn't fill me up. Um and I I also would recognize like things would happen and I kind of would intuitively know they're happening for a reason. Like what it what's the universe God would ever try to teach me? And then years would go on and I would be like, aha, that's what it is, you know, aha, I remember, you know, that's why I was learning. Well, there was one there was one time I was my my son was in football, and um, I was doing a lot of social media, and I'm like, I'm into this, I don't know why I'm so into this. You know, I was just so passionate about it, and and I was like, gosh, you know, what am I supposed to do with this? You know, why am I learning this now? And then as an entrepreneur, I got a business and I started doing the social media and I knew what to do. I was like, aha, that's what it is, you know, that's what it is. And so I'm gonna go back to the positive psychology in 2017 or so, you know, I discovered it and it really, it really pulled at me, really pulled at me. And so I started looking at courses, you know, and I knew that there's something here, you know, I'm supposed to go down this path. And things the kids were still in school, and I just didn't feel confident to make the leap right then. And then COVID happened. When COVID happened, our our whole life changed, everybody's life changed, everybody's life changed, you know. We we pivoted as entrepreneurs and we bought a business. And um prior prior to that, I was doing real estate investing and I was enjoying it. There was things about there were things about the the real estate that I was buying that I that fulfilled me. There was there was create there was creative fulfillment and um you know I would solve problems and um you know it it kept me busy. Um I was you know, I I was watching the market and I was um you know intellectually simulated. I enjoyed it. Yeah, and I had a goal. I had a goal in 2019. I set a goal to buy commercial real estate. That was my big goal for in 2019. I set it for 2020. That was my big goal. I wanted to, I wanted to buy commercial real estate and try my hand at that, you know. And so COVID happened, and um I was like, man, there it goes, there goes my opportunity, you know. I it's just not gonna happen, you know. I didn't think it was gonna happen. Well, it did. It did. Things changed, and an opportunity came about, and there was this opportunity to buy a retail shop in the property, and um it was a neat opportunity. I wasn't supposed to work in the business, but things happened. I'm not gonna go all into it, and I ended up working in the business, and I then I started applying all the skills that I had learned, which was kind of cool, you know. And then I was in the business, and this is where a lot of my coaching comes from, too. The I coach I coach entrepreneurs, and I was in the business, and I was grinding, grinding, grinding, grinding, and I'm looking up and I'm like, God, what am I doing? What am I doing? This isn't working. I like business, you know, even though it was being successful. And um one of the things I realized was okay, I'm not supposed to be working in, you know, what I need. People are the great manager, and the there was work in in the overall work that I enjoyed doing, which was like out in the community doing community building, and I was on boards, and you know, I when I was out networking, I really enjoyed doing that type of work. I also, because I was doing that type of work, I also had younger entrepreneurs, professionals, younger women start asking me questions, mentoring type questions, advice, and um, that was neat. I liked helping people, you know, and I aligned myself with uh with a doctor of psychology, Dr. Linda Traveler, who's still a mentor of mine. And um, she and I schedule, we we arranged a eight-week leadership workshop called Leadershift based on John Maxwell's Leadershift book. And I loved it. We co-facilitated it together. She really led it, and I co-facilitated it, and I was like, God, I just love this. I love it, love it, love it, love it. And I'm like, this is what I I think this is what I'm supposed to do. This is what I'm supposed to do. So that was in 2024. This is where the divine intervention works, walks, walks in. Okay. So the shop was going good, and I knew that okay, I needed another, there was some type of metamorphosis coming, you know. There was a there is an evolution coming. And I prayed. I'm like, God, I think this is what I'm supposed to do. I really do think this is what I'm supposed to do, but I don't know the path. I don't know the path. And I prayed about it. And that was that was Labor Day weekend. It was September of 2024.
SPEAKER_01I prayed about it, and I do believe that God loves a co-creator. And so I started doing research.
SPEAKER_02And like right away, what appeared to me was Valerie Burton, who's the founder of the Coaching and Positive Psychology Institute. And there it was. There was was there was positive psychology and there was coaching. I mean, like that, like I prayed about it that weekend, that weekend I found it and I knew that was my path. Three weeks later, I was in a coaching intensive for the whole weekend, and then in um January of 2025, I did the uh coaching, the um certified personal executive coach classes and the mentoring classes.
SPEAKER_01So I have all of my uh I have all of my requirements for ICGF ACC uh accreditation, and I'm taking my uh ACC next month. So I'd be certified. That's amazing. I love that.
SPEAKER_02I believe it was I I really believe it's a calling and I believe that it's divine guidance because the entire path, you know, there was times in the last several years, I'm like, why is this happening? You know, this just isn't it wasn't it wasn't what I had planned. Like I if I had to chart the course, that's not the course I would have taken. Right. You know, there was some kind of you know, I I have deep, deep faith, deep, deep faith, and I pray, I I pray a lot and I I'm seeing all kinds of really interesting signs from my creator lately, and and I I am grateful. I'm you know, I'm I I give thanks a lot for the the path that God has put me on. And and the way it's uh it's incredibly fulfilling, you know, when I'm sitting across from a client, when I'm leading or coaching a group, you know, and facilitating it's the most it's magic, it's the most rewarding feeling, you know. And that's why I I really do believe that I'm in accordance with what God's will is for me. There's no resistance, none.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I think when you're on the right path, it definitely feels that way. I would love for our listeners to kind of hear really who you've worked with, just some things that you see a lot of people when they're in transition, like commonalities with that, and really how you were able to help them um take like the next step forward.
SPEAKER_01I have uh I have a client who is an attorney and uh very uh you know, high achiever.
SPEAKER_02I and I work with a lot of high achievers, you know, I work with a lot of high achievers, and you know, I find that high achievers they're doing, they're doing a lot, you know, doing, doing, always doing, you know, what's the next thing, doing, and then there's uh and then there's the overwhelm, the burnout, or the the unfulfillment, yeah. And what I see is that sometimes well a lot of times, their values just aren't aligned with what they're doing with work or other activities. And so the work that I do is to to figure out, okay, well, what's what's going to get you into that alignment? You know, is it is it more downtime and what are you doing in that downtime? You know, it's a lot of it, and sometimes it's experimenting with what are the activities that give you energy, life-giving energy. And it's also identifying the things in your day-to-day that are draining your energy. A lot of times we're just so busy we don't take the time to be aware of how we feel around people in different environments, doing different activities. We think we're supposed to be doing something, and that's actually draining us.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I think everybody's gonna be really excited about this podcast.
SPEAKER_02I feel like that's everybody that listens to this. Yeah, and you know I I really the insight that I got as an entrepreneur who was I'm I'm very passionate, very passionate. When I jump into something and I like it, I just go, go, go, go, go, you know. And I I've seen this with other entrepreneurs, especially. You start down the path of entrepreneurship and you love what you do, and you're just grinding, grind, grind, grind, grind, you know, day and night, day and night, day and night. You know, but you're passionate about it, you're engaged, you're motivated. And then all of a sudden you look up and you're like, My goodness, what am I doing? This sucks, you know. So the thing with entrepreneurs is we're just like this, you know. What coaching, what I've seen, what I'm seeing with coaching is it's like, we pull you up, you know, so you can get that, you know, we pull you up so you can get that battlefield look, you know. Let's look at the whole battlefield, man. You know, and and just kind of, you know, realign like what battle are we gonna fight or who are we gonna pull in to help us, you know, march down the field. I mean, a lot of times we're a lot of times we're doing stuff by ourselves and we get this tunnel vision. And coaching, a lot of a lot of like where I do my accountability work, I'm like, who, who do you know? Sometimes we don't, we just don't think that. Who do you know that can support you, that might have an answer, that can collaborate with you? You know, what are your resources? I love, I love asking really sometimes, sometimes it's a silly question, you know, sometimes it's a really deep question, sometimes it's a very uncomfortable question, you know. But I I find that these, you know, when a client is in coaching for a little bit, there's a type of learning that happens. that gives them the agency to start coaching themselves through things. It's very powerful. It's different than like consulting or, you know, therapy. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So you you so you start to uh employ the the the uh the techniques to help you on a day-to-day basis to move yourself from you know stuck and close your close close gaps yeah and I I bet I can bet I would love for you to share just some outcomes too but I bet whenever people go through this and they really really give it a good go and work with you that it absolutely changes how they approach business but also how they're able to live their life too yeah I think a lot of time the biggest outcomes are mindset shifts you know world true true mindset shifts one of the most interesting clients that I get to coach is a um UN coach she's she goes into hotspots and she coaches the people that are around the world in in hot spots and um we do a lot of work on her personal life because she's away so much so when she's home she really wants to connect with the people that she loves and she wants to fill herself back up that way.
SPEAKER_02So that work is very tender. It's very tender you know working with someone who goes into these tumultuous areas and works in high stress environments and then for her to to have that shift to go back shift to go back home and incorporate into life she needed help creating a buffer from all the stress so that she can really fully recharge before she gets deployed again. And that's not unlike an entrepreneur you know because you're so you're you're on so much during the day and if you have a family to go home to you have a loved one a partner you're handling stresses a lot you're you're projecting you're thinking of the future it's very it it it takes a lot to shift from that high stress mindset to go home and be open and be able to connect with those that we love. But that type of that that type of relationship connecting helps to provide a buffer to the stresses that are continuously coming in. That's kind of the work that I do with my nature based coaching the research is showing us that nothing nothing the resets the nervous system like time in nature when you're in nature your parasympathetic nervous system gets activated and that's the system that helps your brain relax and your body relax we're all running around with our our sympathetic nervous system activated which is our fight flight or fight it's like everybody's like in the state all the time you know you know for it's so hard to get out of it right but that's what happens in nature when you go into nature you are not a visitor in nature we are all from nature and so your body knows what to do your brain doesn't have anything to focus on it can just relax and we're also learning that nature's designed to help us so I don't know if it's actually designed like that or we're designed to be in it and get the benefits but there's a there's an incredible symbiotic relationship. Trees for instance they emit a chemical called phytocides that help them to repel bugs but we're learning that phytocides actually reduce our cortisol level believe it or not how about that if that's not some kind of master design I don't know what is I kind of think it's you know I don't know I I gotta I I gotta thank God for that that's pretty ingenious right who knew trees right so I have so I do exercises I have ex I have group exercises called make friends with trees and next time you go out and you look at a tree you're gonna make friends with it name it the science is in if you spend two to ten minutes outside in nature you start to decompress you start to relax your nervous system it's the fastest thing that's why you know that's why we hear people say oh yeah you know I I I went and I took a walk you know and I could think clearly it's nature you're you're relaxing I teach the the the the groups that I that I teach and we'll be out there for like an hour or so you know and they'll tell me the next day yeah like I had this issue that I was dealing with that I just couldn't figure out the a solution to it and a solution came or people that are like you know working working working and they're jammed up and they're just not having new fresh ideas the next day after spending time in nature your creative capacity is increased and you've got creative thoughts flowing that is awesome.
SPEAKER_01I have I've never heard of that make friends with trees so I think all of us have homework to go outside.
SPEAKER_02Yeah I have one in particular I go I go on a nature walk a couple of times a week and I I've just this particular tree it's a giant oak tree you know and the branches just span all over the place and you talk about grounded think about how grounded a tree is right how far down the roots go and how extensive they are you know we have trees in Florida that have been around for 2000 years some of these oak trees seriously crazy they've seen a few things yes that's so good I'm like staring out at mine right now because we're up at the lake there's they're so big out here.
SPEAKER_03So I'm like I might go make friends with the tree after this but I I love that it's so good and I hope everybody that's listening like your job is to I always say go touch grass sometimes because like Instagram will be there when you get back Facebook will be there but really I feel like we can put our heads down as entrepreneurs and look up and it's been like three to four weeks and you're like I haven't been to the gym I haven't been outside and honestly I've what I have found so much over the past two years truly has been the times that I make the time to go outside or go to the gym or get off of my phone I'm way more productive like you said because I feel like I have more capacity instead of just grinding constantly yeah yeah yeah what comes up for you when you say that I think for me I've been an entrepreneur for 13 years and I would love everyone that's listening to this to do it earlier than I did.
SPEAKER_02That's what I'm saying that's what comes up for me is I wish that I had done it earlier truly I'm glad you said that it that you know the the science is in I mean our brains our brains are just not built to be plugged in as as long as and as intense as they are you know any when you when you get away and you do things like exercise you go into nature and and positive psychology we call it flow state anything that you do where like time just passes by and your brain's relaxed and it's you know not stressed or thinking about the problems that's you're in flow state art does it writing does it for me even even looking at art you know does it some people go on you know spin cycles you know spin bikes you know classes time out in nature I call it a massage for your brain we go get you know you go get massages for the rest of your your muscles your body do something that massages your brain it's not social media and Doom scrolling I can tell you that and and you'll reap the benefits right for sure I would love for you to share what you have coming up for people I know you mentioned to me you have a couple different ways people can work with you would love for you to share that with our viewers okay can I just share one really cool program yeah I mean something I didn't I didn't mention to you okay absolutely so this is something I'm really excited about it is down here in Florida so I'm I really am into nature and I'm partnered with Central Florida Animal Reserve which is a big cat reserve we have 17 big cats tigers lions leopards panther Florida cougar uh cougars florida panthers and I have partnered with them to create two proprietary programs out there one is called Wild Resilience and it's leadership a full day leadership program for 12 to 24 teams where we do we do meet nature connection but we also do um team building and we do lessons about lions and we relate we relate lion behavior to team behavior it's extraordinary and um the teams get tours of the uh big cats and there's nothing like it you cannot you cannot get the information you're gonna get about your team members in a boardroom like you do when you're standing four feet from an apex predator. This is not a zoo you get really close to the cats and their incredible enclosures their um their habitats and then I have a a program called ReWild out there which is deaf it that's all nature connection and nature immersion for groups that are coming out there. But that's some really special work that we've created and I don't know of any other coach that's you know coaching at a big cat reserve anywhere that's that's something special and we're just delighted in Central Florida because it's a uh it's an also an eco it's it's an eco tour type of outing and Florida pine woods it's beautiful but my one-on-one coaching programs I I have a signature program called values alignment where you do the VIA assessment it's a four week program and you identify areas of your life that um you know you you're just not flourishing and you feel like you need some work in and so we identify what your strengths and your values are and we figure out how to make that that arc from where you're at where you want to be and we we look at how the strengths you have are effectively helping you in other areas of your life that program is for people that are like coming out of a season a a transition maybe they've had grief loss maybe they've been in divorce maybe it's a career transition maybe it's empty nesters maybe it's somebody who's looking at retirement and they just don't know what the next season is going to look like or how to get there. And so I use the the um values alignment to work with clients in a four week session in four weeks to uh to get them there then my other uh signature program is called courage to thrive and it's really built for it it was it was developed for entrepreneurs the kind like what we're talking about right where you know you're you're grinding and and you're just not fulfilled you're just not fulfilled in the areas of your life and that's a three a three month program it's it it's more VIP level coaching where we uh we look at your values also and we look at all the different areas of your life and I I help clients discover what it is still in their businesses or in their life that is going to um help them be fulfilled. And I do I do Voxer um coaching between sessions also with that. Do you know what that is boxer? Yeah okay absolutely yes voxer's awesome I love that yeah there's a workbook you might there's there's also a workbook and journaling with those too amazing yeah I like I like to do you know I know there's coaches that do just sessions but I I I think that you know for me the there there's things that come up between sessions and I I like offering that touch between sessions to to work with my clients also I like I like to be available for them.
SPEAKER_03I am the same way I agree because I feel like there's just things people have to work through and there's just too much time that goes between and they need to really work through it then. So I do the same thing just because that's how I work as well.
SPEAKER_02Yeah yeah and I want to know you know if a client has a big win or something you know I want to celebrate with them right at the at the uh time that it's happening you know between sessions when the excitement is there. Yeah not a week later right yeah you know yeah it's a difference.
SPEAKER_03I loved having you on the show. I have one last question. So the show is called Rewrite the Rules and really a lot of women that listen to this they're about to make a decision to walk into something whether it's really taking their business seriously their health seriously or going for the thing they really want I know you've pivoted so many times and I have loved seeing it because you are such a confident person would love to hear a couple things that you would tell them if they're still on the fence make a decision and go for it. You can always course correct you know trust yourself just you know you gotta get to a point where you trust yourself that's tough that's that's tough to do for some people you know it it took me a long time to learn to trust myself and and you're not alone you're not alone you know ask for help get support ask for help I I also am a huge advocate of collaboration I uh I I run with a lot of women now that uh you know we help each other and we support each other you know find a find a good core group of other you know like minded people that are you know interested in in on a similar mission and hold each other accountable support each other encourage each other that's so good I am so excited for everybody to listen to this I'm gonna drop everything in the show notes for you guys to be able to connect with Dana and everything that she's doing it was so good having you on the show.
