SPEAKER_00It's such an honor.
SPEAKER_01We have definitely gotten to know each other really well. So I'm super excited for this conversation today. For people that don't know you, I would love for you to tell them a little bit about you, like all the things.
SPEAKER_00So we were born into poverty. I was born into poverty. And through all life struggles, I became a very a person who used her voice a lot and got in trouble a lot for using her voice. Always asked, why do we do this? Why do we do that? Why does this have to happen this way? And because it got me in the corner a lot as a kid, I started learning, I learned how to read at three years old because my mom would allow me to bring a book in the corner, depending on my punishment. And uh from there, I've always just kind of challenged things. I don't let things just be as it is. And so that got me into really good in academics. And, you know, I graduated with honors. I did really well in high school, all the things, and life happened. Uh, we had our first child. My husband and I are high school sweethearts, and we had our first child at 19. And then we had our daughter at 22. But in between that, uh actually I had my daughter, my daughter at 23, but at 22, I also had a miscarriage at five months of pregnancy. And so life was hard for those different those times. It was very challenging. But through that, I, you know, I landed a really great job. And in that job, I was able to move. I started from the bottom and was able to move uh third from the top of the company. And that is because of those curious questions, right? And learning how to balance things in life, learning how to balance time and learning how to balance productivity and looking at things and how do you improve the systems and not just taking it's always because we do it this way, just because, but asking, like, well, does it have to be that way? Let me walk through your process. Let me just ask you questions. And it's been fun doing that. And I've had a very successful career for that. And I've helped save the government millions of dollars because of asking those why questions. But life wasn't always easy, you know. In between the time that I, you know, during my career time, my husband had some medical issues and some challenges. And so we lost half our income right away from his illness. And then I have since then had to work really, really hard and worked my way up to doubling that income and then some. So it's been good. It's been fun, it's been a challenge. But the thing is, if I had to tell anybody, it's don't let your beginnings of your life write your story. You always have a chance to rewrite your story, and you can be the one to make a difference in your life. It's you, not everybody else. You can't blame anybody else on your circumstances. You can make a change. So that's who I am.
SPEAKER_01I love your story so much. You're amazing. I know that a lot of people that are listening probably have been in similar situations or filled a certain kind of way, especially going into the new year. So, can you share some things that you have done to really because what you did was not a small thing. So I would love for you to give some tangible things, some mindset things that you've done to really get yourself where you are now.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Through, like you're right, there's been a lot of times where it's been up and down, ups and downs, losses and things like that. And so one of the things that I did early on is I called these my shine principles. And it's something I had to work on. Uh, when we lost our daughter through the miscarriage, I was over five months pregnant and it was a hard time. And back then, the internet was kind of new. Like I'm older, so I'm a little a bit older. And the internet was there. I mean, it was there, but there wasn't like things like we didn't have the social media like we have now. There wasn't groups where you could go to to how to deal with the miscarriage and things like that. That almost broke our our whole relationship because we both dealt with it differently. And uh, so I kind of dealt with it was just continuing to raise my son. My husband worked night. So, and then I went to school. I was going to get my associate's degree, and I just kind of just did the the routine daily and I never talked about things. I just squashed my feelings. Um, and I just kept pushing and pushing and pushing up to the point where three months later, I actually collapsed at my work and had to be taken by ambulance. And it was such an awakening moment because they took me off work for a week, which even after the miscarriage, I had the surgery. I found out I was miscarrying at night. I had the surgery the next day, and I literally went back to work two days later. So they gave me a week off of work and uh they forced me. It wasn't like I had a choice. The doctors took me off work. And it was a lot of things going through that. Nobody, I was I worked an hour away from my home. And so having to navigate all that, here I'm in a foreign hospital. Like to me, it was foreign. I had never even rode in an ambulance. It was all of these things. And as you're sitting there and you're alone and there's nobody there to help you, there's nobody to talk to you. I was probably in the hospital for seven or eight hours before family could get to me and just talk to me. And there was also the whole chaos of learning nobody could drive my car because nobody knew stick shift. And it was just I couldn't drive. It was a bunch. And so when you really try to try to start to analyze your life. And so the things that I had developed during that week off, I realized like I have to take care of myself. Like I have to. I have a one year, one and a half year old son here. If I don't take care of myself, nobody else is gonna take care of things. Like I have to, you're the one, right? And so I developed these principles, which my S is called is show up. You got to show up every day. You got to show up for you. You don't have to, you know, you have to look in yourself in the mirror. You have to get up out of bed and just show up, smile at yourself, tell yourself that you love yourself. Because during those times, I hated myself because I thought I let my my body let, you know, let itself down. And there's been numerous times I've had to use that again, use those principles again. You know, just recently I had pelvic surgery and I've had I've gained a lot of weight, but I have to still tell myself, you've been through a lot and I love you. And I just show up and I look at myself and I do those mirror exercises every single day. My H is have good habits. We have to have good habits. We are, we can't, you don't just like gain weight like I did, I gained weight, but it wasn't just from eating bad or anything like that. But what can I do? I can do movement, I can walk. And so look at the things that you can do and that you're doing every single day. Are you binging on shows that are not are not good for your mindset? Are you doing stuff that's not productive to your, to your body, to your health, to your to your mental health? So you just gotta look at your habits and have good ones. My eye is intentional. You gotta be intentional at what everything you're doing. When you are like I'm on this podcast, I am intentionally giving you my presence. I am not looking at other things that I need to do. I'm not, you know, playing a puzzle or on my phone or anything like that. You have to be intentional. When we have goals, we just have to be intentional and really set that time in place to work on those goals and those things that we are, you know, to be present and what we desire. And then my end is never give up because there's gonna be hard times. There's gonna be times where you want to give up, but you just never give up. And you have every day assess where am I at? What needs improvement, and how can I keep going? What do I have to pivot? You know, maybe you have to do some tweaks, or maybe what you're working on is not what you really need to be working on. And so do a deep dive, but never give up on you. And my E is every day celebrate your wins. We always look at like, okay, like when we're running, take a sample. I used to be a runner and when I run a marathon, I didn't look at like, I'm gonna start at mile one, what's it gonna look like at mile 26.2? No, I was like every I would go, okay, I'm gonna run to this next tree, I'm gonna run to the next light pole. I'm gonna, once I get to mile one, awesome, next mile. Like we got to every day celebrate those wins. We can't just think, when I get there, when I get this, when I get that, when I get the car, when I those are just idols, things. Those are false idols, those are just things, objects. How is it gonna feel for you when you reach these goals? You're good, is it gonna be joy? Are you just like, okay, I did it next, what's gonna happen? Celebrate the little things. What are the little things that you were accomplished? Like, seriously, I told you we before we were talking, I said I was on vacation. I'm celebrating that I have worn jeans four days in a row because I was on vacation and those the, you know, my sweats were amazing, my leggings. But every day celebrate your wins. Like I got up, I put on my makeup, my mascara. It's a win because I'm taking care of my body. I'm taking care of me. It is not selfish to celebrate your wins. It is not selfish to take care of you. And so those are the things that I really rely on. And when I start to feel down in in um, I have to just do an assessment and like where am I spending my time at? What is taking away my time? And so I do a simple tool as well. It's a time audit and I track every single thing I'm doing. You can do it for two, it's a free resource I have. You can do it to two to three days. And the thing I always tell people, don't lie. If you lie on this time audit, you're only lying to yourself. Like if you literally are sitting in the bathroom for two hours scrolling on your phone, like you got to look at that. Why are you doing that? Maybe you need some good probiotics, you know? And you know, I'm serious. But you got to figure it out. And if you're sitting on the couch for six hours watching, um scrolling and watching, you know, something on Netflix or binging or whatever you're doing, like, is that really good use of your time? So do you really not have time? Are you just not really focusing on your time on what you need to do? There's a time and a place. I love football. And there, and when I watch football, I am there and I'm dedicated, but I get my laundry done in between commercials, you know, and I will whatever the computer work I'm doing, I will like work on that stuff. Like there's a way you can do it. I batch my reels, like those are things you can do. But just look at the things that you're doing. And I'm not saying oh, we multitasking is good because I the only time it's good is when you're like watching a football or a movie or something like that, or you're doing the dishes, listen to a podcast. Because when you do multitask, like say I'm working on a file, uh a spreadsheet, and I really need to focus on the numbers. But then as I'm focusing on the numbers, I'm also watching this movie. I'm being distracted and it's gonna take me 10 times as long to get that spreadsheet done. So when I say that there's a time and a place, like look at your multitasking. But anyway, look at your time, where are you spending it on, and what do you need to improve on? Because I will tell you that so many times people get distracted. And when they're distracted, kind of assess that. Maybe you're distracted because you really don't need to be wanna be doing that task. And so look at your energy levels. Like if I don't have high energy, I am not gonna be reaching out to my customers and asking them how they're doing, you know, following up and things like that, because my energy is down. And so they're gonna, it's gonna reflect in my voice, it's gonna reflect in my emails. But when I got great energy, maybe right after a walk and I'm feeling really energized, that's when you call your clients. That's when you follow up and send those emails. The thing is that we do is we open up an email and we get distracted by the email, we get upset, maybe it's a complaint, we get upset with it, and then we close it, and then we're still strewing on all this on this email. We go to a meeting, the meeting's not going so right, but maybe it's really going well, but we're just still thinking about this one email. Don't open up your emails if you're not ready to answer them. Like set a time to open up your emails, batch those, set up a time to do that. And then when you're going to, we also have to set transition time. Don't go from one meeting to the next meeting to the next meeting because what if you have a bad meeting, then you're gonna carry that energy into the next meeting. And so I call that transition time and allowing you to have some space, do some deep breathing. I think that's really important. You know, I used to commute, and when I would commute, if a traffic was bad, I would sit in my car before I walked through my house because I was like, I don't want to take that negative energy from that commute onto my family. What's that gonna do? It's gonna result in arguments, fighting, all the things because I had a bad time driving. It's not my family's fault that people were rushing to go to Vegas or rushing to go wherever they're going, right? Like, because you know, I work on, you know, I live off the 15th freeway, so the people are always rushing to Vegas or rushing to the beach. But, you know, so I can't take that on my family. So have that time just to calm down and maybe look at your space. When you come home and you walk through your house, is it cluttered? If it's cluttered, right when you walk into your entryway, that's gonna have some negative energy. So make it clear and make it like a peaceful place. So what my husband did for me is he even knew I would get up, you know, I'd have a bad day at work or a bad drive. And even sometimes on my drive home, I would just have to listen to nothing or I'd have to listen to like worship music just to kind of get my head in the right space. And so I would drive home, and then right when I got home, we have an area of plants, succulents, and a little like water future made out of bamboo. So I and I would tell them, like, hey, if I had a bad day, I'd say, hey, turn the water feature on so that right when I'd come home, before I even walk through my door, I have the water future coming, I have the beautiful succulents, and I can just ground myself. Those are little simple things that you can do so that you're not taking in that negative energy into other spaces, but there's simple things you can do because when you actually start to fight, then you're again wasting more time. So I think it's just time is valuable. As we use it, we can't get it back. We can't the every second gone is a second gone. So that's some of the things that I think are so important.
SPEAKER_01I hope I answered your question. Yes, totally. I have so many questions I want to go from there. But my biggest question is so you've worked with a lot of people on, you know, time audits and things. I'm curious what you find most common are people like wasting time doing, especially like the past couple of years.
SPEAKER_00Most people are doom scrolling. They're doom scrolling on social media. And that's okay if you're doom scrolling, give yourself some time. But I'm talking like six hours, you can look at their screen time on their phone. Six hours on social media. That is fine if that is what your business is. But during that six hours of scrolling on social media, are you connecting with customers? Are you making new um, you know, posting reels? Are you batching? Are you like scheduling your reels or whatever you're scheduling? Are you engaging? If you're not comedying, if you're not engaging, if you're just reading and you're taking on, like you're watching the pol all the politics and you're watching this and you're watching that and doing all these other things, is that really productive for you? You know, and there's a time and a reason. Like if you're doing research and you're, you know, for example, it's probably off the wall, but like RC cars, like my husband loves RC cars. So if he's looking at RC cars and he's looking to what he's gonna purchase, of course you're gonna scroll and try to figure out reviews and stuff like that. But limit your time. Like it doesn't have to be all day long because and then starting to go into the politics and all the things and the negative and what's going on in the crime rate and all of these other things. It's just bad juju for yourself. And so look at your stuff. And that's what I really see people sh focusing on or, you know, in spending their time. And when I'm saying, like I had a client who was when they'd wake up, they'd grab their phone, they'd sit in the bathroom, they would be and start looking at social media at two hours in the bathroom and they got them negative energy, and then they're going to, you know, they're taking all that into them while they go to work and they're late for work because they spent too much time in the restroom. Like, look at the things that you're doing. Set some time and, you know, set a schedule for yourself. And I know that people hate routine, right? We're like graduated from, you know, we're done with high high school where we had routine from elementary on. We don't want it. But the re our body is used to that, and that is what we need to continue. So set yourself up a routine. You're the master of your own schedule. Set it up correctly that works for you. If you want to, you know, spend some time on going to the restroom, whatever social media, doing all this stuff, like set it up in your calendar, but make sure that you schedule time for yourself. Schedule time when are you gonna eat? When are you gonna do your workouts? Uh, don't fit it in. You have to schedule it because what's scheduled gets done. And so I think that that's what's so important is that people just do whatever and they don't really have a plan in place. And then before they know it, the week's gone and they don't even know what they did.
SPEAKER_01Yes, 100%. I work with a lot of people that they're on social media and they're working, but I also think, for to your point, I think they're actually doom scrolling. And I think it's like procrastinating the work that they don't want to do. And it's like if you would just get on and create first, then you can do scroll all day. You probably shouldn't, but just get what you need done. I want to know how you help people overcome once they're aware of what is happening. How do you like give them a next step?
SPEAKER_00Okay, I'm gonna give you two things. The first thing is if the something that you're thinking about is gonna take you two minutes, then do those two-minute tasks. In fact, I just posted that today. If it's a two-minute task, maybe you have to, you know, fold some laundry or whatever it has to do. Just hurry up and do that two minutes task and get it done instead of thinking about, oh, I gotta do this, oh, I gotta do that. Because then your focus is on that and not on what you're intentionally supposed to be doing. So that's number one. If it's a quick thing to do, even two minutes to 15 minute task, get it done. Just get it out of the way. You know, check mark. It's done.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00The other thing that I recommend people to do is put all the things that you have to get done, write it down. It's so simple because once if it's all in your head, it just clutter. Put it on the list. Put, you know, I gotta do laundry, I gotta do this, I gotta cook dinner, I gotta meal prep, I gotta do all these things. Put all the things that you have to get done that you are coming to your brain, brain dump. And then look at your calendar and start scheduling those in. Schedule those in as if you would a doctor's appointment, a zoom call, a zoom, a meeting, schedule them in and allow yourself some buffer time. What people do is they think about all these things and then just never schedule it in. And they also keep it in their head and then they forget. And so it's so easy to just put it all down on the list, however, you want to do it. I have like a little tablet. Um, sometimes if I'm thinking about it, I'll just put it if I'm like standing in line at the grocery store. I will just open it up on notes on my phone. There's just so many things. You got to figure out what works for you, but dump brain dump that list and then just schedule the stuff out. And I think that that is one of the easiest ways to just get everything that you need done, done. And then also think about when when you're doing it, you mentioned earlier that some people just don't want to do stuff. They're procrastinating. Think about why you're procrastinating. Is it just because you really don't like that task? Well, if you really don't like it, is it something you can delegate? But I think people are so fearful of delegating stuff. If you don't like to do things on social media, you're not good at posting reels and all these other things, delegate that. Hire somebody, a social media expert, who can help you with that. And then you can do the things that you bring you joy, that only you can do. You are the creator of your business. If there are things that only you can do, then you do those things and you delegate those tasks out that you don't need to that you can have other people do that will bring them joy. And there are also maybe things on your to-do list that you just need to delete, right? You don't need to do them. They're not really important. And so you just got to prioritize. What is the things that you should be doing? And I call those, I uh it's uh the four Ds. What are the things that you should be doing? Uh what do you need to decide to do later? And that's something like maybe for example, New Year, you got to get your, you know, your dental work, your eye check, eye exams, and all that stuff. Okay, do I really need to schedule in January or can I schedule in February? Like it's not urgent, so that can be done later. What is the things that you need to delegate? And then what are the things you just need to delete? Those are the four D's. I I use a little matrix, and that's it's the Eisenhower matrix, but some people don't under really understand what's urgent, all that stuff. It's all just simple four D's. What can you do? What can you decide to do later? What do you need to delegate, and what can you delete?
SPEAKER_01I love how you've broken that down so that it's something that I think anybody can see and hear, and they're like, I need to do this. This is so important. And I also think too, a lot of people feel like oh once I'm aware, I have to take action now. So I love that you're like, no, like what actually needs to happen now. So it was so good, so good. Yeah. Yeah. I'm excited for this year. So I would love to know what you are excited for this year with everything that you have going on.
SPEAKER_00What I'm excited about is I've set up some stuff with uh the state of California so I can do some things. And what I'm excited about is I really want to help. I have helped people with time management. I have helped people with distractions, and I will still offer those courses online. But what I'm excited about is I really want to get into the businesses. I really want to work with those small, medium-sized businesses who are struggling, who maybe don't even know what their key performance indicators are, and they're just going through each day and not really knowing if they're winning or losing. And their workers don't know if they're winning or losing. They're just like pushing orders or whatever it is. And so really helping them work through what is it they should be focusing their time on? What are their processes and systems that need improvement, and what are the waste? When I say waste, everybody thinks it's a bad word. Well, maybe there's it doesn't necessarily be a bad word. There could be maybe you have too much uh inventory that you really that products aren't selling. And when that inventory sits, it's depleting. So really look at what are the things, and maybe you're offering too many things. There's restaurants who have all these things on the menu, and you have to buy these products just in case somebody orders it. Do how often do they order it? If nobody's ordering the fish tacos and they you're throwing away all the fish, then take it off the menu. Like those are the things I want to help them like look at and help them really see what they should really be working on. If they're, you know, we talk about social media, right? We have these niches and we really want to narrow it down. I think that a lot of businesses really need to look at that as well. What are the things that they're offering and what should they really focus on? If you have a high performing product, you need to really use that high performing product to advertise it, to share about it, and to figure out how can you make the most bang for your buck? What are the systems that you have in place? What is the processes? What is your productivity? What is your return on our ROI on it? And those are the things that I really am looking forward to to helping businesses. And I just got my documentation from the state of California that I can go out there and start doing this with businesses. So that's what I'm really excited about. Get in there, getting hands-on and helping people because that's something I I did for a long time and I haven't been able to do it in the last couple of years. And so I'm really excited to get back into that. That is so awesome.
SPEAKER_01I love having people come on that are so passionate about what they do. And so we have so many women that come on here and they listen and they're like, I want to do that too. So whenever you were deciding this is, I know I'm meant for this, this is what I want to do next. Tell me like the thought process, because I love diving into the mindset of how you had the idea and then how you decided to take action on that idea.
SPEAKER_00Well, you gotta, I like it goes all the way back into childhood. It's like, what did I get in trouble for? But what was I really successful at? And I know it sounds funny, but when, for example, my mom would tell us where when the three older girls, I was the third of the three girls, the third one, and she would tell us, go clean your room. Okay, so we go clean our room. Well, one of my sisters loved to read the books. She was actually today, she is a librarian. And then one of my other sisters loved that the um the doll that you could put the makeup on. It's probably way before your time. But you can put them makeup on, curl the hair, and all that stuff. She really loved that doll. And I loved the Barbies. And so I was like, nope, I don't like the makeup doll. I will go ahead and clean up that mess. The sister that likes the books, you're gonna go and clean uh the Barbies and the one that didn't like the makeup doll, the books, you know, like kind of dividing up the tasks. And we would be done in an hour. And then I'd go to my mom, like, hey, we're done. She's like, Well, it would have taken me three hours. And I said, I know, but there's three of us. We were very productive, we were focused, and and that's how we did it. And she first she got mad, but then she understood what I was saying. And later in life, I started to I like I said, I asked a lot of questions. When I first got hired out of high school, I was asking questions on my first job, like, why are we doing it this way? What's this? What's the research and doing all those things? And it helped me get promoted very, very fast because I was asking the questions. And so because of those things, and it was just because curiosity, and I I am so gifted that God gave me a brain that I can look at things and figure out like, okay, this mate should be a little bit better this way or this or that. And what is the environment that we're building these things in? Maybe the environment is causing us to have more defects. And when we have a defected product, it's it's waste. And so, because of those things, I was able to go move very fast in one company. And then I got hired through the government and I took a $7 an hour pay cut to come to the government. But again, I started asking those questions. I came in as a secretary and I knew that I was made for more, but I took this pay cut because I knew that the opportunities would be better than at the company I was at. And through all of that, I was, I would walk down the line and I'm like, oh, this doesn't look right, or this, and just asking questions, wanting to, I'd volunteer to clean the hazmat tanks and like and all these other things. And everybody thought it was weird, but it was just because I wanted to learn and I wanted to understand the business. And that helped me get promoted very, very fast. And so that's the thing is is what brings you joy? What are the things that bring you joy and that you love to do? I love to ask questions. I love to look at processes, I love to look at systems, I love Excel. And I just, those are the things that bring me joy. So you got to figure out what brings you joy. And if it brings you joy, then how can you pursue it to make a career out of it? How can you pursue it to help others? And that's how I got into the time management. Everybody was like, how do you do it all? How do you manage your children, you know, work? And I during all that time, I didn't even share. Like I used, I also was going to school full-time and I got my bachelor's and all of these things. But while working full time, having two children, a husband that was disabled, I did it, I did all these things. And it was because I loved learning and I loved educating myself that that time management had to become in play. There was a time where I would go to bed early, have dinner at my family, go to bed, and then I'd wake up at three o'clock in the morning just to have two hours to study and get all my homework done and then go and, you know, wake up the family and all those things. And so it's really having to balance your time. And because of those things, I've been able to help others too. So those are the things like you just got to figure out what is it that makes you excited. And when it lights you up and you can see it, like I've had um people talk to me and they're like, hey, when I talk about one thing and then I talk about the next, like the process improvement and then helping people streamline their systems, and they're like, you really get lot lit up about that. Well, then that's the thing you pursue. And so you got to figure it out, maybe journal about it, um, get some clarity work, and maybe even volunteer some time doing the things that you want to do, volunteer somewhere to see if there's some place that you can help get in that those hours or even take a course on it. And if that's the stuff like my lean six sigma, that was a lot of courses that I had to take. And the more that I did it, the more I got more excited. And I got, you know, I started at the first level and kept going and going. But it's because it brings me joy and I love what I do. So I think that's important.
SPEAKER_01It's so good. So good. I've loved having you here. It has been so awesome. I will put everything in the show notes for you guys to connect with Angelina and all the amazing things that she's doing. But I ask everybody this question that comes on the show because the show is called Rewrite the Rules for a Reason. And I know that you are so excited for this year and have big things happening. So I want to know for you, what does it mean to live a life where you're like, I'm rewriting my rules and I'm gonna live a life exactly the way that I want to?
SPEAKER_00I think it goes back to the beginning. What I said is like you're born into a circumstance. Like I was born at home and into poverty. We had a very poor life growing up. And, you know, as my mom, you know, helped raise us, we came out of that. But the thing is, you're the one that can make a difference. You don't have to say that just because you've had to live off food stamps and hand-me-downs and all these things, you can still, you know, I love thirst store shopping. I'm not saying that's wrong because I love doing it. You can still be the one to change your life. You can change. Nobody, like I paid for my own education. You don't have to depend on somebody to give you the hands, handouts, and all those things. You can write your story. I have changed so many things. And I will say that of all my siblings, I'm the one that's the main breadwinner for my family, for my own particular family. And a lot of people shun on that. And I don't think that there's anything wrong with being a six-figure income taking care of your family as a female today. And, or, you know, I don't think there's anything wrong. You have to figure out what works for you and forget what everybody else says. Those who are making fun of you or talking about you or judging you, it's just because they're jealous and they can't do what you've done. And that's what I think is so important. You can't wait and look and watch and say, oh, I'm scared to do this because people are gonna talk, or I'm scared if I don't get any downloads on the podcast I want to create or any of those things. You have to do what God has put on your heart and just go for it and stop waiting and stop worrying about what other people will think. Because you know what? Half the time they may not even be thinking about you because they have their own crap they're dealing with. And then if they are talking about you, they're just not the people that you need in your life. So that's what I think is important.
