Parents are spending thousands on youth basketball… and still not getting recruited.
In this episode of Baseline Truths, we break down the real reasons why players are getting overlooked—and it has nothing to do with highlights or stats.
This is not hype.
This is recruiting reality.
🎯 WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:
Why most highlight tapes get turned off in 20 seconds
The difference between position vs role (this is where most families get it wrong)
Why “exposure” is not leading to real opportunities
What college coaches are actually evaluating
How to fix what’s holding your child back
🧠 RECRUITING TRUTH:
College coaches are not recruiting points per game.
They are recruiting:
Defensive ability
Decision-making
Basketball IQ
Role clarity
If your child’s film doesn’t show that immediately… they move on.
🚨 NOT GETTING RECRUITED?
Film doesn’t lie — but I’ll explain it.

All right, all right, parents. We're not gonna go waste no time, I feel right into it. Yeah. Because here's the piece, man. I want to know, parents, are you paying for basketball? Are you paying for the recruiting process? Because those two are not the same thing.
SPEAKER_01Well, you know, Kev, most people don't know that.
SPEAKER_00You know, and you're right. And that's why families are spending thousands of dollars and still don't have any one real option. But tonight, we're gonna break down three biggest mistakes parents are making in recruiting right now. And you know, the do you know your child's level? And you know, Phil, this is one thing that I think parents get wrong. And the other piece, are you trusting stats and opinions?
SPEAKER_01Well, yeah, but Kev, what what do most parents get wrong uh about that?
SPEAKER_00About two things. I stats, you know, stats don't translate. And and and how because the different various levels of competition. So 30 points per game in in a Dallas is very different than 30 points a game in Lubbock or you know, Seminole, Oklahoma, right? Um, and highlights don't really show habits because it's just that highlight piece, right? And then most film, really and truthfully, most film gets turned off in 20 seconds. So you're not paying for exposure, you're just paying for more confusion, you know, and that that's one thing we're gonna really hit home about. I think that gets lost in the sauce, is is highlights. Most highlights you see on Instagram or even Twitter are that straight up and down. It doesn't show the whole frame, so it really doesn't tell you the context of any of it. Um that's the first thing. And then the second thing is, you know, me and you laugh all the time. Uh, we we see 26, 27 point scores, and they habitually don't cross half court to get back on. So a coach isn't gonna know that unless they're watching the full game film, right? And I think so many coaches have been burned uh with with the highlight, you know. They see so many of them, and and that's why I think you know they they they get turned off real quick. 20 seconds is when most of them get turned off.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you know, Kev, you uh you see the one where the guy um uh makes a nice spin move and goes up and slams on somebody. Uh you see that defensive play where he goes up, a guy looks like he's got a free shot and he pins it against the backboard, right? But you don't see those other 10 plays to where he's just loafing, he's not getting down uh in the stands and defending a guy, and this guy is scoring left on you know, left and right on him. He doesn't cross half court as we talk about, or he only gets excited and gets some movement to him when he's gonna score that ball, right?
SPEAKER_00Oh, for sure, for sure, you know, and it's interesting that um today uh today we we did an interview with uh Malik Parrish. And if you haven't seen it yet, go check out the YouTube channel at the one eye scout because Malik Parish one of the top uh uh 6'9 players, right? And kind of the the whole piece for the day was 6'9 now. What you know, and they play he plays with JL3. Um, we have Landonville, who we did an interview with last week, uh on that same team over on the YouTube channel at the one eye scout. Um you know, and and they talked and they talked at length about defense. You know, uh when I I asked Malik today, like what is a coach gonna say in the first 30 seconds? He said, Well, he's gonna see me dunk the ball, he's gonna see me rebound the ball, and he's gonna see me fly around on defense, you know, and and that's his expectation for himself, you know. And so we kind of went through like what all goes into that, you know, and and he was sharing how you know they run heels, they run uh with the bands, they they do all these things that are necessary for the strength and the explosiveness, but also for the conditioning, right? It's crazy to me, Phil. Like we can go to an AAU tournament, right? We can go this weekend, and I guarantee you, there's gonna be kids that are on the floor that are out of shape, they don't have the wing, the lungs.
SPEAKER_01Well, you know, Kevin, I'm I'm gonna take that to another level. I'm gonna take it all the way to the NBA level. If anybody saw LeBron James the first 20 games this season, first thing he said is man, he looked like an old man, right? But everybody, what he didn't have his cardio in or anything because he had been injured, hadn't had a chance to train, hadn't had training camp or anything of that nature. But once he got conditioned, what did JJ Reddick say? He has the lowest body fat uh than anybody on the team that's talking to all the young players, including his son. So the thing is, is it just shows you that no matter how great a player you are or aspire to be, if you don't have your conditioning right, it's it's all for not. It's all for not. You're just not going to get it if you are not in shape.
SPEAKER_00You know, um one thing that we said he didn't have his cardio in, he didn't have all those pieces in place, and you know, I'm gonna I'm gonna pause it right here because for me, that was a big thing, not having the frameworks in place after a year in this business. And that's when we talked with our partners over at MPD consulting, and they came in and they helped me streamline a framework. So now I can go and I can show you exactly what we're doing, and but they focus on structure, development, and real growth, not shortcuts. That's MPD consulting, and it's scrolling across at the bottom. You know, Phil, uh here's another question, man. Another thing. What is your child's role?
SPEAKER_01You know, not what you want, not what you want it to be.
SPEAKER_00No, not what you want it to be, man. And that's been, you know, if a coach watches your film, what are they identifying you as? And does your film show that immediately? And we go back to that 20 to 30 seconds, you know. Um, and and one of the things, you know, we put out, you know, we're active on social media, um, at Kevin One Eye. And one of the things we did was we put out uh news you can use. And man, I tell you what, Phil, that thing created about 15,000 impressions. But what people don't realize that that right there, this book, it's right out the book, and you can have all those lessons for ten dollars, you know, yeah, and so but it was just crazy, man, because I mean I got DMs, I got messages from coaches, from uh school counselors on that very on that very thing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, uh but but Kev, here's the thing. When when I just kind of laughingly said about the role is and what you know apparently want it to be, right? Um again, expound, explain the the whole difference between uh position and role again. Okay, so uh before, but if you would explain that.
SPEAKER_00Well, position is really a label. Is he a point guard? Is he a combo guard? Is she a wing? Is she a shooting? You know, those things, those are positions. But a role, a role is what gets you recruited, like say, for example, um a defense, you know, he's a great defender. Uh that doesn't that doesn't require any position. Uh they're a great ball handler, great decision making. Those are roles. Yes. And I think probably the biggest thing that that we come across is really, you know, we'll hear, oh man, this 6'4 kid can score. But yeah, that's I mean, the role that he needs to play is it projects as a three and D means he's gonna be able to shoot the shoot the three and play defense, right? Uh uh a guard that can score, a scoring guard. It they that comes across as the kid can't run a team, you know, uh a big dominating the paint, it's gonna go into he can't defend space. And so those are just uh some of the examples, but a confused role really that prospect is ignored because what parents fail to realize if your kid can score 22 points a game, woo-woo woo, because any program worth this weight in salt is gonna have a senior that's can score 22 points a game with a grown man body, you know, and if we actually move into the five and five rule, or you got five years to play five seasons or uh five years after your 19th birthday or graduating class, we're just gonna continue to stay old. And what's that gonna do um to the prep school situations? Wow, so postgrad is what it was is what I'm getting at. You know, postgrad's gonna suffer uh with that, but really, man, I think too many parents they understand position, right? They understand that because it's black and white, right? But a role is not, and I I I kind of equate that to the position is in the dictionary. A role is an art form, you know. Uh, and we can take we can take uh pistol peak art form, Dr. J Art form, uh Steph Curry, art form in the way he shoots the ball, you know. Um, but you can't really put because with Steph Curry, he's not a point guard, he's not a shooting guard, he just can shoot the ball and get buckets and and and win. And so again, I just want to leave everybody. If you don't know your role, if you're confused on it, then you're gonna be ignored as a prospect, and that's where we've instituted what call clarity calls. And you know, I you see that QR code and scan it because it's gonna take you right to the calendarly page, and you're gonna schedule your your call, and it's gonna be $25 for 30 minutes. You're gonna send me two links for a full game film. I'm gonna look it over and we're gonna have conversations about your role, about what it needs to look like, about why you're not getting recruited. Because I truly believe that people are getting information that's not on point.
SPEAKER_01Okay, even if you're getting recruited, why aren't you getting recruited to better programs?
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes. You know, and that you know, and it's funny you say it because we were talking, um a coach and I the other day about the equivalency model for the scholarships. You know, we talked about this months and months ago, and that's where even Division I schools are able to uh segment athletic and academic monies to make an equivalent of a full ride. Well, they're giving 15 roster slots, and not everyone is filling out all 15, you know. So that's gonna make it for interesting because not everybody's gonna be on a full ride, like we talked about that the top 1%, you know. So everything else is gonna be divvied up. Um, and what what's been interesting is we're gonna see with the portal because I know uh personally a couple of extremely smart athletes, way smarter than you and I, and they're going to some uh high class division three schools. Uh yeah, and and and man, their bill is practically zero, you know. Um because there is there is there is money in division three, you know. Um but and it's gonna be interesting to see if those guys jump in the portal later on. But and I guess that's leading us into since we're talking about money, you know, let's talk about where money really goes, you know. I why are you going to that tournament? Yeah, who's actually evaluating? Is your child ready or is he just present?
SPEAKER_01So are you trying so now are you are you trying to say that exposure isn't the answer?
SPEAKER_00No, I mean you got to be ready for the exposure. Oh, like yeah, you like your uh your development has to be as such. You need to know what your role is, you need to like, and I'm excited, man, because I've seen I've seen numerous players DM me their highlight videos or tag me in their videos, and there's a defensive clip in that first or second second clip, and that's exciting to me because it already sets you apart, you know, and and and those guys aren't getting clicked off after you know 10 seconds, 15 seconds, and exposure without preparation is just gonna lead to faster rejection. And what I mean by that is there are certain athletes, certain players that don't need exposure yet because they're not developed, right? And we your first impression is not gonna be a good impression, whereas other players um are locked in on development only, and they their trainers use all the cone drills, but they don't compete afterwards, yeah. So, like again, we said before, you can watch those guys in a basketball game when they get jammed up, and you can see they're doing a two dribbles, cone reverse, pivot, you know, and so and I'll be up front honest, like whenever we do our our workouts uh with the with the elite guys, you know, we're doing 45 minutes of skill work, but we're doing an hour and 15 of three on three, two on two, four on four, five on five, but we're actually taking a step further, you know. Um and and say, say you're a you're a you're a small forward, or you are you personally feel are a four, uh, meaning a power forward, and you're trying to move to a wing. Right one one of the things that we do is in the competition series, if you score in the paint, it's a turnover. So it's forcing you to do something that we're trying to train on so that you implement, and that's where the word translate comes in, is when you implement some a skill that you implement during the game, then it translates. And it was interesting because uh listening to Malik today, he talked about over JF3, their kind of routine, and and that was a point of emphasis was that playing after skill work allows you to implement, transfer, translate the skill to actual to actual game.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you know, you know, Kev, I think something that's important to note about that, like you just mentioned the part, especially if you're big man, you score in the paint, uh, it's it's no good, right? And you're trying to get that four to step out and uh do more of that, you know, uh uh good wing, three-point shooting, V two shooting. And the the I I think an important emphasis there in that training is uh getting getting them to realize the importance of being able to have the skill, but not necessarily that day. If you're missing those shots that day, the whole point is getting the mindset that this is what you need to do. The value isn't on whether you made that shot uh that day.
SPEAKER_00Well, and I think that goes back to the behaviors, the habits, you know, because because we do some drills that um you have to hit just for example, you have to hit one from each spot, right?
SPEAKER_01That's always a good thing, isn't it?
SPEAKER_00Well, we build it up to three at each spot and six in the corner, yeah. Um, but what that does, it makes you where you can't worry about that last shot. Sure is worried about getting set up for the next one and do the mechanics properly.
SPEAKER_01And you're not worried about where you're at on the court.
SPEAKER_00No, you just know you got five spots that you better hit them. Um, you know, and so I think most families, they're not behind because of the effort. You know, I think they're behind because of a misdirection, misguidance. Um, and I don't think anybody is giving out false information or fake information intentionally. I think everybody has, yeah, I tend to believe everybody has everybody's best interest.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and and that, and everything you said may be true, but for a parent uh to get the reassurance that they're going to get the good and the true clarity on that, they need to what with the one-eyed scout?
SPEAKER_00They need to get a clarity, book a clarity call on one-eyed scout. And like I said, we'll have uh 30 minutes and we'll talk about your player specifically. We will uh come back and revisit later on. Uh, we'll we'll set up the follow up call in in six weeks and check for the progress. Check for, you know, but there's gonna be some some families, man, that wanna learn everything as fast as possible, and they can go to this website.
