All right, everyone, we're excited. We got a guest from Nafi Davis. He's gonna be joining us at Quarley Academy Prep. Hey man, welcome in. Welcome in. Appreciate you stopping by. And uh true is kept, you know, ball is life, and we're gonna do this interview in between games. Um so today, you know, we introduced a player many people in Texas may not know yet, but that's about to change. Naffi from Philadelphia, just coming off a visit, not a visit, but a team camp at Ryder University. And now Quali Academy Prep's gonna be your new home uh under Coach Anwar King. Why don't you tell us a little bit about what went into that decision?
SPEAKER_01Uh I chose to go here because I seen the results he has, like he put everybody in college. I'm trying to do the same thing. I'm I'm trying to get to college and he's murdering me right now.
SPEAKER_00You know, one thing that I will say, uh quality academy prep, as long as I've known it, everybody's going to school. Everybody's going to play somewhere afterwards. He uh, you know, I know you're coming down here, you're betting on development. Betting on betting, betting on growing your game. So uh how long have you known about quality academy prep and how have you had a relationship with Coach King very long?
SPEAKER_01Uh no, I just heard about it uh through my through my AU coach. I just met Coach King like this year.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Man, I tell you what, man, I I've I've talked with him and he's introduced me to a lot of people on the East Coast, man, and he's got some deep, deep ties. Uh, so people that are meeting you for the first time, tell us a little bit about Nafi.
SPEAKER_01Uh Nafe Davis, like playing basketball, 6'5. And that's pretty much it.
SPEAKER_00You know, what was your reaction when you realized San Antonio would be your next stop?
SPEAKER_01Uh, I was happy because I already got one teammate that plays with me already down there, and like all the guys were cool in the team.
SPEAKER_00So I'm happy. You you gotta come get to watch some Wimby instead of Joel and Bean? Yeah. Um, what are you most excited about in this new chapter?
SPEAKER_01For everything that's like about to come ahead, like all the growth and everything.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Do you have any goals, you know, for for the for the summer to get ready? Uh get better, get stronger. That's it. Because uh, you know, growing up in Philadelphia, uh, how did that shape you as a player?
SPEAKER_01Uh it made me like play harder, ice my game on the court, play with grid, like strength and everything on the court.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, um, is there any particular lesson or thing you're gonna bring from Philadelphia basketball culture here with you?
SPEAKER_01Uh I'm gonna just play hard, ice my go on the court. That's it.
SPEAKER_00What who are some coaches or mentors or teammates that impacted you while you were in Philly?
SPEAKER_01Uh my coach from my Penwell High School, uh Coach Mike, and uh like the rest of my friends I just play baseball with every day outside, or we just go to the gym and just play basketball.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, those can be some really, really strong relationships, man. Um how how do you think your game evolved from your freshman year until now?
SPEAKER_01Uh my freshman year, I currently play basketball for hours tall and just on the court running around. And then I can through, shoot, defend. Everything got way better.
SPEAKER_00So I've heard uh that the the Ryder University team camp is one of one of the camps to go to up on the East Coast. Tell me a little bit about what was the environment like there.
SPEAKER_01Uh it's like it's great basketball, a lot of coaches just walking around watching the games, talking.
SPEAKER_00What did you what do you think you learned competing against some of those different teams?
SPEAKER_01I just learned like uh every team out here, like, it's all good teams, you gotta separate game up.
SPEAKER_00Always gotta be ready, man. Yeah. Be ready as soon as you get ready. Uh was there a particular thing that happened this this at that camp or this this weekend that really helped bolster your confidence? Uh just like you know this uh that's why I call me like you, man.
SPEAKER_01Defending, getting the ball, getting the bucket, as building confidence, maybe you want to play defense more and everything else.
SPEAKER_00You know, we have a I'm gonna give a shout out to to one of our partners, uh, MPD Athletics. They're doing a lot to get players and families ready for uh for the next step in their basketball and football journeys. It's not about 40s and stop clocks, but about knowledge and education about how to better roster management, how to better yourself for NIL. And uh really want to get just give them a shout out. Now, let's get back to Nafi. So, what led you? You kind of touched on the success at Quarley Academy Prep, but what led you to go ahead and leave your area to come on down?
SPEAKER_01Uh I just seem like I could get one more opportunity to like get one more year of basketball and get better and everything, get ready for college. I just took took the opportunity to get better.
SPEAKER_00What stood out about Coach King's vision?
SPEAKER_01Uh at first when he texted me, he sent me like all the pictures, like all the people kind of side college and everything. And I went on the Instagram page and I seen everything. And the teams they play like is better than the teams I was playing down in Philly.
SPEAKER_00Okay. What do you what do you think that um made that made yourself be the right fit, the prep route be the right fit for you? Uh well, I mean, we always want to get, you know, you said another year of basketball. You know, another year getting getting better. Um, you know, as a player, how would you describe your game in your own words?
SPEAKER_01My game is like I like to get downhill, we're gonna shoot the ball, I can defend, get rebounds. That's it.
SPEAKER_00You know, what separates you from other wings, you know?
SPEAKER_01I like the like most of the defense part like box out or I defend like block shots and everything.
SPEAKER_00You know, I I really like that uh you you mentioned defense and rebounding a lot, and that speaks to the heart of the one eye scout philosophy. So I I appreciate that. And uh when college coaches watch your film, they have to notice the defense, but is it what else do you want them to notice?
SPEAKER_01Apply hard every time you go in the court, uh stop every play.
SPEAKER_00You know, whenever whenever you're looking at and you're gonna look at college programs and and Coach Keen's gonna help you look through that. Um what kind of college program do you think is gonna fit you the best? Defensive minded, you know, what do you think?
SPEAKER_01Like a school that's like have like run good sets, like they have a good system program, they get a lot of players fired. That's it.
SPEAKER_00You know, uh man, I appreciate you being a homie here, and and and I would really like to have, I'm gonna ask you now, some follow-up interviews. Now that because we we're meeting you while you're still in Philly, you know, and kind of meet maybe once a month throughout, uh, just kind of talk through the journey because truthfully, man, uh prep basketball is not new in Texas, but it's it's growing very rapidly. And then I'm trying to learn it now that I like to learn it with you. But hey, uh, thank you for joining us on the watch list. Your journey from Philadelphia to San Antonio is a reminder that everybody's path is different. We're excited to follow your journey and see what's next. And for everyone watching, uh thanks for joining in. And let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see. Yeah, man. Just glad for everything. Thanks for joining, and uh have a good evening. Uh get ready for your game and go bust somebody up. I got you, thank you.
