Welcome back to Firearms Reform, a WA Police Force series for the firearms community. I'm Claire Ciantar and I'm joined by Commander Lawrence Panaia. Today we'll be discussing some pretty important steps for firearm registration. Now, Laurie, what do we need to actually access the registration portal?

Lawrence

Good morning, Claire. Thank you. Look, to access the portal, probably the easiest way is to have a MyID account. Obviously, the portal is our system, which is a secure system. It has people's firearms data in it. So it's important to have a secure way to get in. Probably the securest way to do that is a MyID.

Claire

So Commander, can you tell us a little bit about what this portal actually is?

Lawrence

Yes, the new firearms portal is the way for firearm licence holders to manage their own account into the future. Everything they need will be located within that portal. Their renewals, their firearm licences, their applications for additional firearms, everything they need will be in there. So it's really important that they understand how it works and get their details in order to be able to register.

Claire

Can you walk us through some of those steps to set up a MyID account?

Lawrence

Yeah, so probably the easiest way to do that is if you've got a smartphone is to download that app. Probably have a driver's license and a Medicare card is probably the easiest way to do that. And once you make sure that you've got that and put the details in that match our system, if you like, or match your driver's license, that'll probably be the easiest way to get in.

Claire

And that is some pretty easy steps to keep in mind. Are there any other tips to make the process pretty simple?

Lawrence

Certainly. If you visit the MyID website and you follow those instructions there, that'll be the easiest way to set up that account. And then once you're in, you can link it to our portal.

Claire

What can people do if they encounter some issues during that registration process?

Lawrence

Okay. So once you're signing in, you'll find if probably the biggest reason you'll get blocked at access is your details don't match. So a different middle name or no middle name, one of those types of issues. So if that happens, you'll be issued a token. It'll come up as a token number and it'll ask you to email it to our address, which is the licensing services email. If you do that, we will be back in contact with you to work through those issues and then get you registered and properly into the system.

Claire

So are there any tips for ensuring that smooth registration process? It sounds like personal details is the key information here.

Lawrence

Definitely. So if you double check all of that, make sure that your Department of Transport and your WA Police and your MyID all line up, it'll probably be a very simple process for you.

Claire

Well, thank you for talking us through those very important steps. Do you have any final tips, any final thoughts for when it comes to registering?

Lawrence

Yeah, so obviously MyID we think is the easiest way. Obviously, you can choose another way if people don't want to do the MyID. If that is in case for you, I think the best thing for you to do is to contact us at Licensing Services and we will get you to go and do a hundred point check, probably at a police station or out at Cannington. And that way we can verify your ID and then start to set you up in the portal in a different method.

Claire

Yeah, fantastic. It sounds like there's something for anyone and for everybody who might want to register.

Lawrence

Absolutely. The new portal, when it's fully up and running, is going to be the easiest way to manage your firearms license into the future.

Claire

Well, thanks for joining us and thank you for that very important information. Stay safe, stay informed and catch you next time on on firearms reform.
