To introduce the idea that growth is not just about learning new information, but about how we think, respond, and develop over time. Growth is shaped by our mindset whether we see challenges as obstacles or opportunities to learn.

Many of us naturally fall into patterns of thinking such as “I’m not good at this” or “I can’t do this.” These thoughts can limit progress. By shifting towards a growth mindset, we begin to see that skills, confidence, and abilities can all be developed through effort, reflection, and experience.

SPEAKER_02

Thank you so much. And yes, welcome to the May segment of Clear Mind, Clear Vision. And today I'm excited to be showcasing the talk on growth. So we'll be talking and focusing on all areas of growth. And it's something I know that I've definitely had to consistently work on in terms of having my own growth mindset. And I'm hoping that together in this segment we can work together in terms of elevating that growth mindset. Because having that growth mindset, the ability to grow in your personal life, in your professional life is so vital and so key to continue to allow us to get from where we are now to where we want to be. So as always, let's just take a couple of nice deep breaths in and out just to ground, to center, just to trust that this is exactly where we need to be right now. So we can absorb the information, utilize it, and really experience it really fully. So just a nice couple of deep breaths in and out.

SPEAKER_00

So breathing in and slowly releasing.

SPEAKER_02

Just letting go of the morning, letting go of the day ahead, just being present. One more deep breath in and slowly releasing, allowing yourself to feel centered, to allow yourself to feel that flow and to really enjoy the growth session. So, what is growth? What is a growth mindset? So it's your ability to allow yourself to feel confident, to allow yourself to feel that things that you want to learn, to develop, to proceed in, to enhance your skills, whether again personal or professional life, that you are able to do so, that you have that confidence that you are able to develop in any of those areas. And there's that difference between having that fixed mindset and got a growth mindset. So sometimes we might have that element of a fixed mindset. And with a fixed mindset, what does that mean? So really it's that narrative or that talk that we give ourselves where we can't do something. So if you might tell yourself, I can't do this, or I'm not even going to try because I know I'm not going to be able to succeed, or I can't achieve that. It's not within my skill set, or I'm not even going to give it a go because I know I'm not good at that. And so you kind of stop yourself even before you've even, you know, allowed yourself that open-mindedness to try. So having that fixed mindset, you're ultimately telling yourself, I can't move forward in this area, or I didn't want to give that a go, or I don't want to face that challenge because I know that I can't do it. So I'm just going to stop right here. And that's you know, giving yourself that fixed mindset, saying I can't do something. The difference with a growth mindset is that you go in with open-mindedness, curiosity, and tell yourself, actually, it's a challenging situation, but I'm going to use that as an opportunity. I'm going to see that the effort that I'm putting in as a learning model. I'm going to use all my experiences to grow. I'm okay to try to maybe have some setbacks and to try again and find different reroutes to where I need to get to. I'm okay to seek support. I'm okay to look for different resources to get to wherever I want to be. So I'm having that growth and that open mindset that I'm here right now. I might not know the full steps going forward, but I'm open to exploring the opportunities, the resources, the support around me to really get to where I want to be. So that fixed mindset is saying, I can't do this. The growth mindset is telling you, I can't do this maybe just yet, but I'm open to learning, to seeking those opportunities to get to where I need to be. And I will find a way forward. So that could be with your belief system, that could be with certain skill sets, it could be with absolutely anything. Having that growth mindset is about being open to opportunities to move forward. So let's think about your own growth mindset. So I love to you know give yourself that evidence that you have already had that growth mindset over your years, from the minute you were born up until where you are now. So even as a toddler, okay, if you think about when you were a toddler and you were learning to walk, how many times did we fall down and pick ourselves back up again? We didn't fall down and say, okay, I'm just gonna sit here, I can't do that. Actually, we fell over and thought, you know, I'm gonna get up again and I'm gonna practice one more time to get to my walking and get to where I want to go to. So a number of times we fell over, we got back up again. We had that growth mindset as a toddler. Maybe you learnt to ride a bike. I'm sure we didn't get on the bike and off we go straight away. We must have fallen over quite a few times, taken a few bumps along the journey, but we continued to get up to learn to ride a bike later on. We learned how to maybe spell, you know, some words or write a few words very first time. Maybe we learned to read a first word in a book where we couldn't really read the first letter initially. So even as a toddler, we had that growth mindset that we couldn't do something straight away, but we were able to later on. And you can give yourself that evidence over your whole timeline. I can give you a very quick example of my own self. I used to always tell myself, I'm not good at technology, and during lockdown, what I would say is if we were having a Zoom meeting with somebody, I would always get the other person who I was having a meeting with to set send me the Zoom link. Because I thought I can't send a Zoom link, so I don't know how to set it up. So that was my fixed mindset. So I'd always say, Can you send me the Zoom link? But later on, I thought, actually, no, I can do this, let me figure this out. So I learned whether it was a YouTube video, how to set up a Zoom link. I was able to then set that up for myself. So that was that growth mindset I developed over time. That actually, I'm not saying I'm not good at technology, I meant I'll be great, but I can get better by learning. Another example in the clinical setting, I was using a trial frame. I was asked to use a throughopter in some instances. Again, I thought, no, I can't use that again technology. What if something goes wrong? But actually, over time, I practice, practice on my colleagues, and that growth mindset allowed me to think, no, I can get confidence, I can get better at this, and I learned to use that through opter. So, really simple examples there. So, what I would love for you to do, either thinking about it, if you've got a pen and paper there, that'd be fantastic. I want you to think about three things in your own timeline. They can be big or small, it doesn't matter. About times in the past where you thought you couldn't do something, whether it was a clinical skill set, whether it was a personal belief, it could be absolutely anything, big or small, three things where you thought you couldn't do something, but you were able to. Afterwards, you learnt away, you found a way to improve, you got better, and you were able to achieve or accomplish something you initially thought you couldn't do. So when give you a moment, just writing one, two, and three, writing an example of something you thought you couldn't do, but you did do. So just giving you a moment to think about a time, you kind of rewind back from the days, the weeks, the months, the years in your life, big or small, it really doesn't matter. Something you thought you couldn't do, but you ended up being able to do, just lighting those three things down.

SPEAKER_00

And then just next to those three things, think about what you did.

SPEAKER_02

How did you get there? How did you improve? How did you overcome any of those limiting beliefs? Maybe did you get support from somebody? Did you use certain tools or techniques? Did you do any online learning courses? Maybe it was just reading a motivational book or listening to a podcast to just boost your self-esteem. Maybe something just happened and you thought, you know what, I can do this, and you switched on your laptop and sent that first email, or you wrote something down to really get you going. What supported you from thinking you couldn't do something? What was that path like? What happened from thinking you can't do that to getting to that accomplishment achievement stage? So me believing I couldn't use a theropter, my first thing I did was I can do this in my lunch break. Got a colleague and I practiced on my colleague. I didn't take that first patient and do it straight away. Did it on a colleague, try to practice, things that might have gone wrong, that was okay because I was just practicing on my colleague, and then I felt actually this is not as bad as I thought. And then after lunch, try it on a colleague and on a patient. So three things, and more might come up as you think about all the times that you thought you couldn't do something, but you managed to. Things that I thought I couldn't do, I did. So hopefully you've got those three things written down that you thought you couldn't do, but you did manage to do it. And then what I want you to consider now is three things or more if they come along, but at least three things that you might be struggling with now. And what this practice is going to be called is a yet practice. So this is called a yet practice. So what I want you to do is think about something that you might be struggling with right now. Things that might be frustrating you, things that you might be finding a little bit difficult, things that you might be finding challenging. And I want you to write, I can't do this yet. I can't decipher those OCT images of the disk as much as I would like to in as much detail yet. I can't seem to have that conversation that I need to have with my manager because I'm a bit nervous yet. I can't seem to get to the gym two times a week, only managing one yet. Okay, so some of those things that you feel like you can't do, I'm struggling in a certain area in my role at the moment, and I can't seem to seek support who I know I know someone that's gonna help me, but I can't seem to reach out and seek support yet. That sentence of things that you feel like you can't do that you're telling yourself that you can't do, whether it's because of belief system, your confidence, a skill set, enhanced learning, knowledge, whatever it might be that you feel like is preventing you. I want you to write down that sentence. I can't do whatever it is you feel like you can't do yet. Okay, so it's a bit of a yet practice. So when you add that yet onto the end of it, it changes it from that fixed mindset to actually I can't do this. But when you have the yet onto it, it allows you to have that growth mindset because you are now your mind is already now looking as at opportunities to move you forward to get you to you to where you need to be. Okay. So writing that sentence, yet, and then what I want you to think about is reframing that sentence. I'm finding having that conversation difficult yet, but I'm going to build up my confidence by maybe speaking to a friend or partner or family member to ask how I can approach my manager, and that's what I'm going to then use to have that conversation. So trying to reframe it. I'm finding deciphering those OCT images a little bit difficult yet. Can't seem to you know work on it just yet, but I am going to put myself on an online CBD course that I'm going to search for tonight. Okay, so having a reframing moment. So using that yet, and how can you reframe that same situation to allow you to grow and give yourself a little bit of action for the next step? So I'm going to think about what it is that you can do to reframe a can't to a yet to an action point. So I'm just going to give you a moment to think about that. I can't use the watch ahead yet, but I'm going to speak to somebody that's using it to show me, and then I'm going to practice on my colleague for myself. Okay, so you've kind of gone from can't to yet to action. I've just started a new role somewhere. I'm nervous at my capabilities. I feel like I can't do this job anymore. Maybe I'm not cut out for it yet. What I'm going to do is get a mentor or pinpoint two or three things that I feel like I might struggle with and speak to X, Y, and Z, and I'll send an email. Okay, so just giving yourself a moment or maybe going to can't fixed yet to action. Just giving yourself a moment to think about that for your own self. And this could be in your personal life or your professional life. Just three points, and as I said, more if they come along. It's really about believing in yourself, showing yourself the evidence in the past so that you are stronger, more courageous, more resilient, then you may even believe in yourself, reminding yourself of your own capabilities because you are absolutely capable of doing anything that you want to do. And taking on today as a fully growth day, growth mindset, and believing in your own abilities, capabilities that you can do absolutely anything you choose to do, no matter how small, how big, and being your own cheerleader, being your own champion in your own day, your own week, your own month, and ultimately in your own life. So I'm wishing you a fabulous Thursday, wishing you a fabulous growth week, and look forward to seeing you next time.
