The Lie: I Don't Hear From God | Ep 4

Welcome to episode number 4. In today’s episode we will be talking about the number one lie we believe. The number one lie we believe is that we don’t (or can’t) hear the voice of God.   We’ve been praying for people for about 10 years, and the main lie that people hear is: I don’t hear the voice of God. Often, people experience instant insecurity and fear that the prayer won’t work.  A conservative christian couple came for prayer at a training event in Dallas. As we talked, they shared that they had been having very direct warfare coming against them.  The wife was terrified and exhausted and not sleeping because of tormenting thoughts she was having. The enemy is a liar and was trying to convince her of lies about herself. As you may be reading this or listening to the podcast, you might be hearing lies.  We proclaim truth and submit to authority of the trinity, scripture, and we stand on the identity of christ as the priesthood of all believers we can pray on your behalf. As we are sending out this message we are praying that in Jesus name we forbid any work of the enemy or use of lies over any listeners.     Keith was coaching a young man who was one of our previous college students who did not believe that he heard the voice of God (we will call him Steve). Keith asked Steve if they could do a little prayer experiment. As Keith prayed, he asked the Lord to bless Steve and anoint him as they talked on the phone. Then Keith asked, "Holy Spirit is there anything you want to show steve?” After waiting a moment, Keith asked Steve what he was sensing or hearing. Steve said, “Yes, I have a situation at work that just came to mind as you asked that.” Keith prayed, “Jesus, would you meet steve in his office.” After a moment, Steve said, "wow that’s cool. I see Jesus walking up to me and my coworker and blessing our relationship/friendship. Then Jesus showed me some brokenness in our relationship, and show me that I can trust him to heal the relationship.”  Keith said to Steve, “hey, can I offer an observation? About 90 seconds ago you said that you don’t hear God’s voice very often. Just now as we prayed, what do you think was going on?” Steve stammered a bit and then realized that the short time of prayer was a direct communication from God about a real situation in his life. Steve realized that he was believing the lie that he couldn’t hear from God. God was loving and gently getting Steve’s attention and revealing Himself to Steve in a tangible way.   When the enemy lies to us about not being able to hear from God, and we buy in to that lie, the enemy is getting in the way of our freedom. The enemy knows that if he can get us to question our ability to hear God’s voice, then it will keep us from seeking God in that intimate way. We also want to clarify what we mean when we talk about hearing God’s voice. To hear the voice of God doesn’t have to mean that it’s a tangible audible voice.  Some people are picture oriented, some are word oriented, some connect with God on nature walks, some connect through songs, throughout the scriptures, and some through writing. When we pray with people, we actually ask the question: What are you sensing as we pray? Often the enemy will try and block your senses so you can’t experience the power of God.  When we sense this is happening during a time of prayer, we will ask the Lord to remove any blockages and open up all the senses to receive fully what God has for the person we are praying with.    John 10:14-17  14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.16 I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. 17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again.   God is a good God and we know his voice because we are His children. Hey everybody, welcome to the Everfree podcast.

My name is Keith Peeler and I'm here with my amazing wife, Megan Peeler, and we are all about prayer, aren't we? 

We really are.

And the purpose of the Everfree podcast is to be naturally supernatural as we share stories, biblical principles, concepts, and tools that are going to help you find freedom in your relationship with Christ.

Welcome to episode number four.

In today's episode, we're going to talk about the number one lie that we believe, and that is, I don't hear the voice of God.

So one of the key things, we've been doing this now 10 years.

And as you're continuing on with us in this journey of the healing prayer, where Everfree come from and what is it that God is drawing out of Keith and Megan, but then also what kind of the calling on our life to help people just be set free.

Like we've experienced freedom, we want people to be free.

So whether you're a believer or not, Christ can set you free.

Whether you are a believer, whether you believe in spiritual warfare or not, Christ can set you free.

And so as we progress in this journey, we wanted to share with you the insights, the things, the tools, all that stuff, right? 

And so one of the main things, one of the main hiccups that we get the first time someone comes for a prayer appointment, what do we hear all the time? I don't hear the voice of God.

Yeah.

Right.

Instant insecurity.

Yeah.

And I, we prayed, you know, we were at a conference, so we were training at this conference in Dallas, not too many, not too many months ago and did the training.

Everybody got the training and a woman said, yeah.

And she was already signed up for prayer a month before, heard the training, heard the prayer.

And she said, I just got to say, I'm just so afraid it's not going to work.

I'm just so afraid it's not going to work.

And, and so it's interesting, right? 

This very conservative Christian couple came, we prayed for them and, um, uh, was, you know, we kind of, when we first started prayer appointment, we kind of asked, Hey, where are you coming from? 

What's your background? 

And, and this person said, Oh, wait, I don't, you don't have to convince me of the reality because I'm having these thoughts that are destructive and evil and they are not, they don't feel like me.

And I'm just terrified because they, they're getting worse.

They're getting, I'm losing sleep, all these different things.

And as we start talking, that was one of her comments.

I'm just, I'm so hopeful, but I'm just afraid it's not going to work.

And it relates to this idea of fear.

And the enemy is a liar.

So friends out there listening hear this clearly.

The enemy is a liar.

In fact, as we begin this podcast, some of you right now, as we're talking are hearing lies right now.

You're hearing the lie that this guy is full of manure.

You're hearing a lie that God can't do that.

You're hearing the lie that fill in the blank.

You're hearing some lie right now.

And, and what we proclaim is the truth.

And so as we do this podcast, as we share with you, we want to just say this, we submit to the authority of the father, the son, the Holy Spirit.

We submit to the authority of scripture and we stand on our identity in Christ as the priesthood of all believers that we can pray on your behalf.

And so in Jesus name, anyone listening right now, we forbid any work of the enemy to come against any person listening.

And we forbid any use of lies over any listener hearing this podcast right now in Jesus name.

Okay, friends.

So that was a little bit of an intro and an example of praying with authority.

I identify who I am.

Did you hear me say that? 

Who am I? 

I'm submitting to the father, son, the Holy Spirit.

I'm submitting to the scripture and that in the name of Jesus, under the identity that he has given me, I can pray.

And so here's a fun little story actually about this whole thing.

When I was sharing with a guy, he was a young man.

We were doing ministry in, in Dallas and I was working on campus.

Young man graduates from campus, becomes a professional in Austin, Texas.

He and I kept up kind of a coaching discipling relationship.

And he said that very thing that you said at the beginning of the episode.

I don't hear the voice of God.

That's right.

He goes, he goes, well, Keith, you know, I mean, I just don't hear the voice of God very often.

Oh, okay.

So well, I'll call him Steve.

Steve, can we do a little prayer experiment? 

And he'd done prayer with us before.

So he understood that, you know, we would pray with pictures or that we might, you know, ask God to show us a song or something like that.

So he was, he was open to creative ways of praying.

But I just simply said, let's do a little experiment here.

Sorry, Steve, close your eyes.

Let's pray.

All right.

Holy Spirit, would you bless Steve and just clear the way for anything? 

If there's anything distracting him or getting in the way, we just clear that out.

And so father, we just proclaim that Steve is your servant, that he's your son, that he loves you.

And you want to speak to him, father.

And so Holy Spirit, is there anything you want to show Steve? 

Is there, is there anything distracting him or getting in the way right now in Steve's life? 

He sits there for a second, goes, huh, that's interesting.

So, well, Steve, what do you, what do you think about it? 

What do you get? 

And he goes, well, as soon as you pray that, I just thought about this situation at work.

And he explained the situation.

I said, oh, okay.

I said, all right.

I said, Jesus, would you meet Steve in his office? Jesus, what do you want to tell Steve about this situation? 

I sat there for a second.

I said, all right, Steve, what do you hear? 

He goes, well, that's cool.

I said, what? 

He goes, well, I just kind of had the sense that Jesus kind of went up to me and my coworker and just kind of blessed this friendship and like kind of showed me that there's some brokenness there, but that is not going to get in the way.

And then I can just, I can just trust him in that relationship.

So that's pretty cool.

Amen.

And I said, I said, that's pretty cool.

I said, so Steve, may I offer a reflection? 

And he goes, yeah, sure.

I said, about 90 seconds ago, you and I first started this phone call and you said, well, I just don't hear the voice of God.

Right? 

Oh yeah.

That's what I said.

I said, Steve, what have you been doing for the last 90 seconds? 

He goes, what? 

Wait, wait.

Hey, wait, hold on a minute.

Right? 

And so I said, Steve, you're believing a lie.

The enemy is lying.

You bought a lie.

The enemy told you that you don't hear from God very much and you believed it and you're walking around because you shared that with me, but in less than 90 seconds, you and I prayed together.

I asked the Holy Spirit to show you something and what happened.

He was, the Holy Spirit revealed to me the presence of Jesus in the situation and showed me how to walk it out.

Well, and the truth is when the enemy lies like that, and we buy that lie, hook, line and sinker, it is him winning against our ability to have freedom.

We can't be free if we believe the lie that says we can't even hear God's voice.

Right.

And hearing God's voice, I think this is helpful to clarify.

As we've had this conversation now, the last few trainings that we've led, people have said this, I'm just afraid I'm not going to hear his voice.

And there's also like this other fear of getting it right.

Right? 

Because if I don't get it right, it's not biblical.

If it's not biblical, it's not good.

And if it's not good, then I'm not good.

Right? 

People go down this train very quickly of this thinking.

And so this idea of hearing his voice, when I say to hear the voice of God, I do not mean to insinuate that it is a tangible, audible voice.

How do people hear from God? 

And we've talked about this.

How have you seen, Megan, people hear, quote unquote, hear the voice of God? Some people hear the voice of God when they're on a nature walk.

When they're just walking and talking with the Lord, something will happen that will awaken their spirit to a higher power.

Yeah.

That's God.

Other people will hear a song and be moved to tears because it'll just flood them with emotions or the word of God.

I hear the voice of God through my pen.

Right.

When I put it on paper, I just start writing things that I feel like the Lord's telling me.

And so the idea of hearing the voice of God is not, like we've gotten to where now in prayer appointments, rather than saying, what does God say or what do you hear? 

We'll say, what are you sensing? 

So I'm praying for Steve.

See, Holy Spirit, what are you sensing? 

And he'll say something, right? 

Yeah.

And a lot of times what could happen is the enemy will block your senses.

He'll block.

So we'll ask the Lord to remove any scales that are on the person's eyes or any earmuffs or blockers that are in their ears.

We'll ask the Lord to allow them to open up all of their senses to experience the power of God.

So there was a verse that you were reminding me of.

What was that verse that you talked about? 

I love the message translation.

And I was reading in John 10, I think it's 14.

I am the good shepherd.

I know my own sheep and my own sheep know me.

In the same way, the father knows me and I know the father.

I put the sheep before myself, sacrificing myself if necessary.

Yeah.

So here's this picture, right? 

Like God is a good God.

He's a good father.

And Christ is referencing his relationship with the father and saying that we know his voice.

So if you think you don't hear the voice of God, that is anti-biblical because you do.

Scripture tells us that he knows our voice and that we know if we are his sheep, we know his voice.

And so sometimes just creating a posture of listening and a posture of openness.

I remember when I first started, we talked about this kind of in episode one and two a little bit, but when we first started hearing the voice of God, it was unnerving in a very tangible way.

But the untangible unnerving stuff is actually what helped us see that we've been hearing the voice of God this whole time.

And that was the lie.

The lie was that we weren't really hearing.

And so you might sense it.

You might get a picture.

And so when people are talking to you about what it is that you're doing, then what is the Holy Spirit leading? 

How does the Holy Spirit lead you? 

Some people go straight to the word and they get, they, I mean, memorize verses and they've got a, it's like a mental rolodex.

They've got everything in their brain.

I don't have that at all.

Like I have the references and the stories are there, but every time I want to talk about something, I have to go and look it up.

But friends, you hear the voice of God.

If you're his sheep, you hear the voice of God.

And so we want to just dispel that right now.

Like you do, you can, and you will.

But sometimes it takes some practice.

Mm-hmm.

And scripture talks all about us experiencing God.

And even in Matthew 5, 8, it says, what bliss you experience when your heart is pure, for then your eyes will open to see more and more of God.

And that is my statement over my life is there's always more.

But to see him, to experience him, I mean, those are words that he used.

Yeah.

Well, and it makes me think, right? 

So we had a prayer appointment with a person in Dallas in November, a strong leader in the church in charge of a very large ministry and not any, again, not a situation where there was like obvious sin in their life or anything like that.

Like no character, just, but she was at our training and just said, hey, I really think you're supposed to pray for me.

Can we have a time? 

We did.

And it was powerful because what was revealed in that person was a greater hearing of his voice.

She got encouraged, like there was more going on there and she was hearing very quickly.

But what ended up happening is the Holy Spirit led her to some pictures and some ideas about her theology and about where she was headed, about how she had to do certain things to receive grace.

Now, so hear me on this.

She had to do certain things to receive grace.

Right.

Hear the lie? 

You have to do something.

Grace, there's nothing, not one thing you can do for grace.

You can't earn grace.

Grace is something freely given.

Right.

But her theology was right there thinking, well, I've got to do it right.

I've got to do it right.

And so, so this do it right thing sneaks into our theology all the time.

Now here's what I want to affirm.

We affirm good theology.

We affirm good teaching and we affirm testing the spirits and testing the scriptures to know that what we're talking about is the truth.

Even testing everything we're saying right now.

Test it all.

Test it.

Test everybody.

I am, you're going to hear me say this.

You're getting sick of me saying this.

I got nothing to fear and nothing to hide and nothing to sell.

Right.

We're not here trying to get you to believe something that's different than what you're believing in because we think you should.

We're here to tell you who you've experienced and let you know that there's more for you and the ability to hear his voice than probably some of you have ever even considered before.

We want to empower you.

I don't hear the voice of God for you.

Now God might bless me with a word of knowledge about you so I can bless you.

And that's meant to encourage you and to build you up.

But I don't need to hear the voice of God for you because you can hear it yourself.

And so as we begin these prayer appointments, this is the big lie.

People sit down with us when we start praying and that's what they say.

So we kind of developed a picture that helps and we want to give you this picture.

Imagine this.

We kind of say to our friends that come for prayer, imagine that we're all walking around with helmets on and these helmets have three antennas and the main antenna in the middle of your helmet, that's the U antenna, that's the Keith Peeler antenna.

That's the antenna that is my thought processes.

It's my theology.

It is my history.

It is my personality type.

For those of you who have the Enneagram, it's my number seven.

And that's me.

That's the Keith antenna.

And that's the antenna that I'm like, that's the antenna I'm listening to right now as I'm having this thought and conveying the words coming out of my mouth are coming through the antenna.

I'm thinking things and creating thoughts and those thoughts are coming out.

That's the main antenna.

Then I got this other antenna that is my father, son, Holy Ghost antenna, right? 

That's the one I'm trying to tune my antenna into all the time to take on the mind of Christ, to be as Christ, to think as Christ, to be transformed.

Yeah, that's what I was about to say.

One of my favorites, to be transformed by the renewing of the mind.

Right.

And so I hear from the father, son, and Holy Spirit antenna and I apply what I'm hearing there to my antenna and I write my antenna where it's wronged.

But then I've got this third antenna over here on the side.

It's the ugly antenna and that's the antenna of the enemy.

Okay.

The enemy can influence your thinking.

And so sometimes what we like to say is in this analogy, now remember this is just a picture analogy.

This isn't a Bible verse somewhere.

This is a way of thinking that we've developed.

That the enemy tries to wrap his antenna around our antenna so that we can't clearly discern what the enemy is putting in our brain versus what we're thinking.

Okay.

Now we're going to say this a million times too.

We don't believe that the enemy can make you do anything.

But the tempter, the influencer, Satan himself will come to try and rob, steal, kill, and destroy the good in your life.

So what better way to do that from within your own mind? 

And so often when we think about it this way, we will pray with people and say, all right, in the name of Jesus, Father, would you just unwind that antenna? 

If that antenna is wrapped around, I'll say I'm praying for Steve.

If that antenna is wrapped around Steve's brain, would you separate those antennas and in the name of Jesus, if that antenna has been using Steve's voice against him, we command it to stop.

You cannot use Steve's voice against him any longer.

And when we pray that prayer, what happens? 

They start to hear the enemy's voice and they can tell that it's not theirs anymore.

All the lies that are coming at them, telling them horrible things about themselves, they realize it's not them.

Yeah.

You had some of those intents, right? 

When we talked about your deliverance story, what were the lies that you remember believing? 

Yeah, that I was too sensitive.

I was a crier.

I was extremely emotional as a child and my emotions confused people and always, I mean, I was just known as the one that's going to cry and it was always too sensitive.

But that ended up being used against me as a lie, saying that my emotions weren't healthy and that I felt too deeply.

Yeah.

But that you heard though, that voice is your own voice.

Yeah.

And as the Lord started administering to me about those lies, I heard the lie and then I told that lie that it had to go and the Lord started saying, I created you empathetic.

Yeah.

I created you to care for people deeply and the enemy has stolen that gift from you.

Yeah.

And I feel like the Lord was restoring it, but I was also able to hear the lie for the first time and not just think it's just the way I am.

Yeah.

And that, see, that's another verse.

I mean, not verse, another phrase we hear.

Well, that's just the way that I am.

Because we've always been told that.

We've been told that or, you know, I'm 46 years old as I'm doing this podcast.

I've spent enough time in therapy.

I've spent enough time with Christian therapists and counselors and pastors and mentors and friends.

I have been developed.

I have been encouraged.

I have been strengthened.

And I know right now that I still believe lies about myself.

I'm not careful.

But a few years ago, I thought I was responsible for all those lies.

I had no idea that the enemy was also jumping into my brain, if you will, or using some of this garbage.

We talked about my pornography struggle in a previous episode.

Like the lies that I was believing in that was, you're just really broken.

You're never going to get healed.

Jesus is just going to have to forgive you over and over and over again.

And I just, I agreed with that.

I took that on as my way of thinking.

And that's where a lot of people come in and the struggle and where we first begin to pray with people is really helping them deal with identity in Christ.

Who does Jesus say you are? 

So one of the cool tools that we have used in that process, and this is a tool that Dr.

Kraft gave us to use, is called a back to the womb praying.

Okay.

So Psalm 139 says that he knit you together in your mother's womb.

We've referenced that before.

We'll reference it again.

It's one of the core scriptures for us.

And in that scripture, we understand that though my mom and dad came together in the natural to form and create me, right, through their intimacy, it was Jesus who picked that one little sperm and that one little egg that made Keith Peeler, Keith Peeler.

And so when we're praying with somebody at the very beginning of that time, we'll say, all right, Steve, we want you to imagine something, right? 

You want you to close your eyes and imagine Jesus standing before you.

Can you see him there? 

And depending on whether they can see him or not or how he comes, we'll just kind of work with him until the picture arrives that Steve feels comfortable with using his, again, that redemptive imagination.

So I want you to imagine Christ's hands open before you.

Can you see that? 

Yeah, I can see that.

Okay.

Now we're going to imagine that one little sperm and that one little egg that formed you.

Can you see that one in one hand and one in the other hand? Yeah.

Okay, Steve, a way that you can bless your birth, where you can agree with Jesus about who you are, about how you're made, is to bless it and say, Jesus, thank you for making me.

Would you close your hands and show me? 

And as we do that, what tends to happen? 

It depends.

If someone doesn't feel wanted or feels like they were a mistake, that's a very difficult thing for them to do.

And we have to wait a while for the Lord to minister to that brokenness.

But if they can see Jesus creating them, and a lot of times they finally do, it's just beautiful.

I feel like I'm stepping into a holy moment because people light up and they just see fireworks or they see a bright light.

They hear phrases.

They hear phrases about truth from Scripture that are spoken over them, and it is so beautiful.

And it's interesting too, because sometimes, even as people are hearing what they're hearing, and these are positive things, and it kind of, when our role in a prayer appointment, when we're in that specific place, is to kind of be just watching over them and making sure that what they're hearing is reflective of Scripture, right? 

So if they're getting a picture of Jesus and he's wearing a dark robe and he's angry, that doesn't trigger anything from Christ as I see in Scripture.

And if that happens, that's typically a false Jesus that's trying to show up, and it's a Jesus that they grew up learning about that maybe isn't representative of the true Jesus.

So what we'll do is we'll quote.

The Apostles Creed, right? 

The Apostles Creed, and we'll speak it out loud.

And it's just really powerful to see the shift that happens when we do that.

And the purpose, again, this is a tool.

Remember, we have concepts and tools that we talk about with Everfree.

Concepts are that spiritual warfare is real.

Concepts are that the enemy can get rights or permission, if you will, to just mess with us because of brokenness and that garbage we talked about last time.

The tools are back to the womb.

This is not a biblical tool that says, oh yeah, you can find this in Matthew 5.

This is a.

.

.

It is a designed tool.

It is a mental exercise to allow you to experience the truth of Scripture.

The truth of Scripture is that you are knitted together in his mother's womb.

Okay, that's what Steve got.

That's truth based on what the word says.

But for Steve to experience that, we can ask Jesus to reveal himself in that way, and through our creativity or through our mind...

Actually, it makes me think of one young woman we prayed with, and for the first 45 minutes, I think, we were, what are you sensing? 

What are you hearing? 

And she...

Nothing.

Nothing.

Nothing.

We just kept praying blessings over her, but what are you sensing? 

Nothing.

And 45 minutes in, I could tell she's getting frustrated, right? 

So I said, hey, I'll call her Trisha.

Trisha, are you getting frustrated? 

Yeah, I just don't get it.

Like, I don't know why I'm not hearing him.

I said, you know, we all are on a different journey.

I said, no problem.

Let's just take your time.

Let's just listen and just see what keeps happening.

And then it's like a little light bulb went off in her head.

She goes, wait, can I journal? 

I said, what do you mean? 

She goes, well, I'm a journaler, right? 

Like, I like to write things.

So can I just like write it out? 

Like, sure, why not? 

Let's do that.

So we got her a pen and a pad of paper, and she goes, okay, ask me a question.

Okay.

And I asked her a question.

I said, where, you know, Holy Spirit, what do you want to show Trisha? 

And she goes, and she's got a little pen, it's just burning down the page.

And it's like three or four pages, full on, like every one.

It was amazing.

We just sat and was like watched.

And then she, she read it back to us and she got this amazing picture and this amazing like story from Jesus about something that happened to her when she was young.

She was, okay, ask me the next question.

I asked her another question and she didn't need me, right? 

This is the point.

People don't need Keith and Megan, people to pray for them.

But in that process, Holy Spirit is showing her how to hear from him in a new way.

And we were just there to help unlock for her a gift.

And that has been unlocked in her.

And now it's a tool that that person's using and she's empowered to go off on her own to pray for herself, for others in a new way.

So that's our kind of hope with Everfree in this podcast is that we're sharing stories.

This is not just about hearing a story, but doing something with what you're hearing, right? So what's a good exercise, babe, that the people that are listening today can try on their own today?

 I think a great way to establish your identity in Christ is to ask Jesus to show you what He placed in you in the beginning.

When He chose that one sperm and that one egg, what did He put inside of you? 

What was His intention for your life? 

And allowing Him to minister to your identity.

I think that's a great exercise.

And here's a warning for you.

Here's a pop-up warning and a good one.

Your inner voice, your own thinking and the enemy is going to resist this.

It happens almost every time.

Because sometimes we don't...

Look, I know my sin.

I know my brokenness.

In fact, last Sunday I preached on living by the Spirit and it was a total jerkwad in the flesh to my family that night.

You had a moment.

No, that's very kind.

I'm not going to use the word on the podcast that I was, but it starts with an A.

Anyway, so we remember these things.

We are constantly battling against living in our flesh and living by the Spirit.

And so your natural reaction, those of you listening, your natural reaction is going to be resist the powerful things and the good things that God has put in you.

Our theology is clear.

We are broken.

Our bodies are broken and we need Jesus.

But once we have Jesus, He sets us free and He calls us by name that we are no longer…

The old has gone, the new has come.

So ask it this way maybe.

Jesus, the old in me is gone because you've now come into my life.

Through the power of your Holy Spirit, Jesus, who do you say that I am? 

And speaking it in His name and blessing it and receiving it is the encouragement and the challenge, right? 

Yeah, yeah, for sure.

That's right.
