Episode 1 Welcome to Trivia Buzz
Hi, and welcome to Trivia Buzz, the trivia quiz game that serves up trivia with a twist.
I'm Nancy. And I'm Laura. And we both love trivia in all shapes and forms, but we especially love it paired with a classic cocktail. So we decided to put the two things together and invite you all in to share them with us. Just a little bit about us. Nancy is a bonafide trivia enthusiast with spins on game shows like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, where she financed her kitchen, Reno and Jeopardy. She went up against the legendary buzz sauce. Super champ, Ben Chan. She's also a bit of an amateur bartender. She and her husband Jason will take any opportunity to friends with a homemade cocktail or a three. Yeah, thanks Laura. And Laura, A recovering lawyer. Mm-hmm. Is a longtime pub trivia champ. From Boulder, Colorado to the North shore of Massachusetts to here in sto, Vermont. She's been the kingpin on a number of winning pub trivia teams. Most recently. She heads up the team, she shares with me and a great group of friends, including her husband, Chris, and, uh, cocktails. Yeah, Laura says, yes, please. Yes, please. Mm-hmm. Her lemon drops are legendary. Aw, thank you. Here's how the game works. We start off with happy hour where we introduce a cocktail of the day. You can find this recipe on our website@triviabuzzpod.com. We encourage you to raise a glass with us. Then we head into the first round of questions sometimes we're gonna have a guest on, and we'll ask them questions along a topic that they know loads about, and we'll see if we can stump them. And if we don't have a guest, we'll do a round of questions for each other answer along with the scoring sheet that we have up on trivia buzz pod.com, and you can record your answers if you'd like. Next up are the miscellaneous trivia rounds that get progressively tougher. The easiest round known as the well features ten one point questions. The second round is the straight no chaser round, featuring our mid-level toughness questions worth two points And a mystery round that has a connection theme to guess. Last round is the toughest, and that's why it's called the top Shelf. These questions are worth a whopping three points each. So without further ado. Let's get into our inaugural game. Let's go. Okay, Laura, what are we drinking today? Today, Nancy, we have the Corpse Reviver number two. Oh, number two. That is number two. That's my favorite one. It is my favorite one also, and you may know that there were about four iterations of the corpse reviver over the last century and a half, and the number two is pretty much the most popular. And my favorite to be sure. I didn't realize there were four. I thought there was only two. Yeah, there. There are a lot of them, but you may recognize this one because it is definitely the most well known. It is made with one ounce of dry gin, one ounce, a Lile blanc, which is an aperitif wine. One ounce of orange laur such as Quatro or triple sac, triple sack or something like that. Mm-hmm. And then one ounce of freshly squeezed lemon juice. And then we top that off with two or three drops of Pastis. That sounds and absolutely delicious. It's delightful. I'm so glad we have one made up for us right now. Okay. Cheers. Cheers. Yep. Delicious. Wait, why is it called the Corp survivor? Do you know? Oh, that's right. It is called the corpse reviver because Len has it that if you drink for in fairly rapid succession, that it is enough to revive the dead. To wake the dead. So, oh, okay. Very cool. So you have this, it can't save your corpse off. Should you have this when you have a hangover? Like, will this help? I think it was actually made to be. a hangover cure. Okay. Okay. But it will just bring you right into your next hangover. Exactly. It's like, here's your next one. Enjoy. Well, actually, Laura, you have made a perfect choice because Oh, yeah, yeah. Yes. Oh, okay. Because we have brought you here today to play a game about. The Dead. The Dead, yes. As in The Grateful Dead. Oh my God. Yay. Yep. We're gonna ask you some questions around one of your very favorite bands, which, people out there, let me just tell you, Laura, in her, in her youth, which was just a million years ago, a few years ago, was a bonafide deadhead. Yep. Yeah, it's true. And, wait, did you see like. A hundred shows and go to every state in the country. Um, no and no. I, I got very, very close to that triple digit number, but never quite achieved it. And that was with Jerry Garcia alive. I'm not talking about the. That's so cool. You know, the more recent dead shows, I, I went to almost a hundred to see Jerry, so that gives you an idea of how old I am. Did you wear Bengal on your ankles and spin around and Yes, yes, yes, yes. And they were called spinners. We were called spinners. Um, oh, I know that certain like subset of dead headset would fall the dead around and they were called spinners. Oh, okay. They were so cute and fairy like it was awesome. Yeah. Flower child, huh? Yep. I love it. I love the image. So are you ready for this? I am ready, yeah. So what's the format here? Next? Okay, so what we're gonna do is I have 10 questions for you about the Grateful Dead and we want you to play along listener. So, I will ask the 10 questions, leaving you some time to write down your answers or just think about your answers. But you can use the scoring sheet on our website, and then we'll go back and we'll. Get Laura's answers to the questions. Okay. See how many I can, I have faith in you. I, I don't, I am, I am scared now that I'm on the spot. No, no, no. You'll be great. You'll be great. I hope I can still qualify as a deadhead if I don't do well. Absolutely. Are you sure? Yeah. Okay. Photographic evidence. We have that. No, none. Absolutely none that I'll admit to. Alright. Question one. What is the original name of the Grateful Dead? What famous San Francisco Intersection? This is question two. Sorry. What famous San Francisco Intersection did the Grateful Dead Live near in the summer of Love? Question three. Who is McGahan ti? I really hope I said that right. I have no idea. That sounds like a fake name. Question four, what dancing animals are closely associated with the Grateful Dead? Question five. Besides a lifetime achievement award, how many Grammys have the Grateful Dead won? Ooh, that's gonna be a tough one. Question six. What album finally garnered The Grateful Dead, A Top 10 Placing in 1987? Question seven, what song was the band's first and only Top 40 hit? Question eight. What is unique about Jerry Garcia's right hand? Hmm. I know that one. Question nine. There's more than two. End question 10. What is the name of the 2017 documentary by Amir Bar Lev? That is subtitled The Untold Story of the Grateful Dead. All right, we're gonna give you a few moments to wrap up your answers, and then we'll come back with the final answers. All right, Laura. It is time. It's time One in the hot seat. Oh God. My, my Grateful Dead cred is on the line here. I'm gonna remind everybody the questions and we'll get some answers from Laura. Okay. Alright. Hopefully some answers. Number one, what is the original name of the Grateful Dead? Okay. That I know. That is the Warlocks. Yes. Yes. Yeah. Which I think it was a kind of cool name, but I think the Grateful Dead was even better. Do you know why they changed it? Uh, oh. You know what? I think it was because there was another band operating at that time with that name. Okay, that makes sense. And then they had this whole process of getting their new name, which I won't bore you with, but Okay. There is a whole, there's a story there, right? Okay. The warlocks, that is correct. Question two, what famous San Francisco intersection? Did the Grateful Dead Live near in the Summer of Love, that was intersection of hate in Ashbury Streets. Yes. I mean, I would've guessed that. Yeah, the vortex in in the late sixties. Yes. De, yeah. Okay. Question. That is correct. Question three. Oh, and that was in San Francisco, by the way, in case. Oh, did you say that already? I, I, yes. Okay. I understand. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. Question three. Who is McGahan ti? That's a crazy name. That is such a ridiculous name. I have no. Idea. I have no idea what you're even talking about. I, I, you know, I, I thought maybe this was common knowledge with Deadheads, but maybe not. I, well, maybe it is. It is. It's not common with this deadhead. It is the pseudonym used on group written composition, so I guess if they wrote it together. They use that name. And that's how it appears on the credits of their albums. And you remember liner notes? Oh my God. Not on albums. You're older. Oh, yes, I am folks. I am Oh, walking what? Like 11, 12, 13 months maybe. Question four, what dancing animals are closely associated with the Grateful Dead? Oh, that's, that's, that's a layup. That's the Dancing Bears. That's an easy one. Okay. Okay. The Bears. Yeah. And, you know, actually. Legend has it, Laura, that they are not dancing, but marching. That is so weird. I, I mean, I always thought they were dancing. I think it's pretty much, I think every other deadhead would, I, I don't wanna talk for them, but I think they all pretty much assumed they're dancing. Well, when I went back, I, you know, when I was doing the questions, I went and looked it up and I was like, they look like they're dancing. Yeah. Well they look kind of happy. Yeah, they do Happy bears. So doesn't look like they're, you know, happily marching off to like. I don't know, a camp or something. 1, 2, 5. We're up to number five. Okay. Besides a lifetime achievement award, how many Grammys have the Grateful Dead won? Um. That is hard. I know their only really, really popular hit was Touch of Gray in the late eighties. So, I mean, that was a pretty popular song, so I'm gonna have to guess. I don't know one. Well, the, the, uh, giveaway here was besides a lifetime achievement award, the answer is zero. Oh, okay. None, no Grammys? Nope. Nope. Not, not necessarily for, um. For everyone there? No. Okay. That's sad. Number six. What album finally garnered The Grateful Dead? A Top 10 Placing in 1987. Oh, oh, okay. That one was the one that had, touch Gray on it, right? That is correct, yes. Oh, God. What is the name of that? Oh, shoot. I can, I, I can see it. It, it, I think it had like little pairs of eyes all over it, but I have no idea what the name was. I, I, I can't remember. The name is in the Dark. Oh God. Yeah. Is that ringing a bell? Yeah. I didn't own it, but yeah, it, it does ring a bell. Question seven. I think this one you got and what song was The Band's First and Only Top 40 hit. That was Touch of Gray. That is correct, yes. Touch of Gray. Yeah. Number eight. What is unique about Jerry Garcia's right hand. He, oh, you knew this? Yes. Yes. Sweet. Oh, I think all there's the deadhead. Know this, he's missing. Half of his middle finger on his right hand. Yeah. Yeah. And do you know how he lost it? Yes, it was, with an ax chopping wood. Crazy. Oh my god. I know. But the, the thing is, when Jerry was still alive and playing, he said that, missing that part of his finger actually. Helped him play better. Oh wow. Okay. For whatever reason, I'm not sure his unique sound. Yeah, that's, that's, I like that. Alright, number nine. After Jerry Garcia died, the name, the grateful Deb was retired by the other band members. Name the two other names the band tour under after Garcia's death. Just two. I think, um, uh, Phil and Friends. Yes. And um. Further? Yes. Yes. Further is one of'em. Okay. The Dead, they just also tore under Simply The Dead. Oh, yeah, of course. The other ones dead and Company and Fill in Friends. Okay. Dead Right is Dead. And Company the one with, what's his name? John. John There. John? Yeah. I'm pretty sure it's, yeah. Okay. Yeah, I think that's, I know that one they're playing under right now. At the sphere. And the last question, what is the name of the 2017 documentary by Amir Barlev? That is subtitled, the Untold Story of The Grateful Dead. Oh. Yeah, that's tough because I don't think I saw that. Mm-hmm. Um, is it like, I don't know, un unbroken chain, it's a phrase closely associated with the Grateful Dead. Oh, oh. So I'm, I'm guessing I didn't get that long, strange trip. Oh, come on. Of course. That I should have known that. Um, I didn't see it. I did not see it, but, it sounds, sounds like we have to have a little viewing there. Yeah, for sure. For sure. Okay, so how did I do Nance? I don't feel like I did, so I didn't, I don't, you know what? You got six. Right? And in our books, six, that's a win. Okay. Winner. Winner. Yes. Then yes.
