Pub trivia in the palm of your hand
Hi, and welcome to Trivia Buzz, the trivia quiz game that serves up trivia with a twist.
I'm Laura. And I'm Nancy. And we both love trivia in all forms, but we especially love it paired with a classic cocktail. So we decided to put the two things together and invite you all in to share them with us. The game consists of five rounds of 10 trivia questions that get progressively tougher as the rounds go on. If you'd like, you can play along using the scoring sheet on our website, trivia buzz pod.com. So Laura, how's your week been? Well, there's been a lot of stuff going on in my house. Okay. Some good, very busy. Like a lot of work people there. Um, um, some for like really great things like putting on a new roof and then some not for such great things like our exploding appliances. Yes, exactly. Yeah. We had, our hot water tank boo malfunction and. Flutter basement. So yeah, that was awesome. We had a new rug down there, so that's gotta go. Okay. Yeah. Good times. Oh, and no hot water for four days. Oh, right. Is that what I smell? No, I did manage to find a shower. Okay, good. But oh, and, and I'm sorry, what? One other thing. Big week in my family, my daughter turns 21 tomorrow. Lily. Lily. That's huge. That is huge. So she can finally have her first drink. Oh my gosh. She can enjoy our cocktails. Finally. Finally. Yeah. Have you ever seen those really funny, TikTok videos of, you know, I'm not a TikTok person. People, well, not even TikTok, like Instagram reels, whatever. Okay. Yeah. And the person turning 21 is like faking having their first drink. They like shoot vodka or, you know, whatever, tequila, like five shots of tequila straight. And the family looks at them like. Oh my God. And then, then the person's like, oh, I mean, that's awful. Oh my God, I can't, can't handle it. So funny. That is really funny. Yeah. So we might have a situation like that tomorrow. Well, happy birthday to Lily. That's great. Yeah. Happy birthday Lil. That is awesome. So, I do feel like I owe you an apology. For what? For leaving you high and dry. I mean, you've managed just fine with a win. But what? I left you high and dry on trivia night this week. Oh, that was so rude. And you didn't even tell me until like an hour before oh, I know. We're like, I was afraid. You know, when baseball, they call the pitcher and the catcher, the battery. I did not know that. Oh. Oh God. Now I hope that's what it's called. But, I feel like you and I are the battery of our team. Oh yeah. You know, we're kind of the anchors. Mm-hmm. You know, we've got great players, but you and I are kind of the anchors and you, um. You anchored away? I did. I did because, we had our annual, foray out into the Vermont Green soccer match in Burlington with the whole family. Well, that's pretty awesome. Yeah. Get the boys to do it once a year and, it was great there. I guess people probably don't know about the Vermont Green. It's a. Tiny little team, based outta Burlington and they're semi-professional in one of the lower leagues of the National Soccer League. Where do they play? They play at UVM outside. Yeah. Virtue Field. Oh, mm-hmm. Oh, fun. Yeah. University of, Vermont. And, they have this really rabid fan base. I mean, the fan situation is cool. Was it really well attended? Oh, it's always sold out. Oh, no way. This was the only ticket we could get actually for the season. And they're undefeated. And they won that night and they won seven nil, all right. So they're good. They're really good. I might even go to a game. They made the playoffs. Maybe we can go see a game on a Tuesday for the playoffs. Absolutely not Tuesdays, but I'll have, you know, you know, we still won trivia the other night. I'm very proud of you. Just because we got rid of all the dead weight. Yeah, right. Just kidding. You mean the other contestants? No, it was packed. Well, summertime's packed. Yeah. Really packed. Mm-hmm. Really packed. So I absolutely love soccer as you know, but my second favorite sport is tennis. You I was going to say, you better say tennis. Oh my God, yes. I love it. But you don't play. I played for a while and then I broke my ankle twice and now I Okay. Yeah, not so much. Gotta get you back out there at some point. But Laura's favorite sport is tennis. Yes, it is. Actually. Looks like she's wearing a tennis visor. A tennis shirt. I'm like, what? I know. And I didn't even do that on purpose. Visors on, because I haven't had a decent shower in days and then I just threw it on the shirt'cause I love it so well you are dressed very appropriately because today we're gonna be talking tennis and drinking some tennis. I can't wait. I hope I do better on this than I did on the grateful dick questions. They better be easier. Oh my God. They're harder. No, just kidding. In honor of tennis, today we're going to be drinking a famous, cocktail. That you, and I have both had at the US Open. It's called the Honey Deuce. The Honey Deuce. Oh, yummy. It looks beautiful, by the way, Nance. It's such a pretty color. Can I describe how it looks? Sure. Um, we have what's now a pink looking drink in a high ball. Mm-hmm. And it has two honeydew melon balls, which are the tennis balls as Yeah. Which are tennis balls. And That's so fun. It's just such a beautiful looking drink. Let's try it. And then you can tell everybody what's in it. Okay, here you go. Cheers. Cheers. Really good. Wow. That is awesome. I like it. Yeah. The official drink of the US open. The melon balls are meant to be tennis balls. It's refreshing and light Perfect for the hot, humid days in Flushing Meadows, Queens at the tennis. Yeah, it is brutally hot always. Yeah. I only went once. Okay. And it was in 2002, so it was. Less than a year after nine 11. Oh, right. And it had a very somber, feel to it. But the tennis was just so great and uplifting. I saw Serena Williams who won that year. That's a great match. I saw Pete RAs, who won that year. Condoleezza Rice was in the box next to me and I got some pictures of her and she waved. It was really fun. And then other attendees, donald Trump. We'll, we'll edit that out. Okay. Well, my great star sighting was, one year we went and we were in a box and. Justin Timberlake walks in? No. With Jessica. Be in the same box. In the same box. Stop it right now. Sat behind me. And, did he bring sexy back? Jason, of course was like, how you doing? Blah, blah, blah. And I could not say a word to him. And this was probably, I'm guessing in the pre Jimmy Fallon, like fun. Days when they were no best bros. This was like maybe 2015 ish. Oh, okay. So they were right in the middle of it. Yeah. And so actually the week after I was getting my nails done and I'm flipping through a people magazine while I was waiting to, to my nails to dry or I don't, yeah, I was getting my pedicure and, there was a photo of him in it at No, in the box. What? With with me? No, in front of him. Can you see your face or was it just at the top of your head? No, it was like way What magazine People? Yeah. Or it was either people or in what's the other one? In Touch. In Touch? Yeah. Or something. I have no idea. Yeah. But I didn't, wanna get caught tearing it out of the magazine. I didn't take it. You didn't take a picture of it either? Well, you know, I would've run out. I, it was when I didn't really have my phone with me that often kind of thing. Okay. You know, it was like before those days. What's wrong with you? Yeah. Just kidding. I love you. So do you wanna tell everybody what's in the drink, by the way? Yeah, I'd love to. Um, three ounces fresh lemonade. Not freshly squeezed juice because we actually tried that first and it was a little tart. So make sure you need a little bit bit sugar lemonade. Mm-hmm. Um, one and a quarter ounce vodka. One half ounce raspberry liqueur. Honeydew melon balls to garnish for the fun looking tennis balls. So you fill a high ball glass with ice and vodka, top with raspberry liqueur and lemonade and stir garnish with a honey dew. Yeah, it's pretty simple. It is so simple, but it's really good. Yeah, as listeners can tell right now, we really do like the lemon and I promise we'll move away from that. Maybe in the future, maybe, maybe we'll give you guys all a lemon break. So Laura. I think you know why we are drinking this drink today. I think I do. And I'm so excited for this. Yeah. All about tennis talk tennis. So just before we go into the questions, let me just ask you, how did you get started playing tennis? My mom, she made me take lessons when I was really young. Like maybe four or six. I can't really remember, but it was really, really young. Okay. And, um, you know, like. Any kid who's that young, they, I was like, I don't wanna do it. Play, you know, the rackets were so heavy, they were wooden. Oh my gosh. Yeah. I'm that old. I did put it down for a long time when I had some knee problems, one knee problem but once I got that taken care of, I was able to come back and really. Get into it. What's your favorite surface to play on? It's gotta be grass. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. It's so fun to play on and I love to play in bare feet on the grass. That's cool. Yeah, it's really fun. Wow. Fun. But I do, I do like clay a lot. Mm-hmm. What's your favorite grand slam to watch? Wimbledon, of course. Wimbledon. Okay. Wimbledon. Although French open's a close second because I've been, okay. Yeah. Wow. Again, I have a controversial question here. Okay. What are your feelings on pickleball? Oh, it's fine. Yeah. You're okay with it? Yeah, I'm totally okay with it. I, I've played, I have to have someone explain the scoring to me every single time I play. It is a little complex. Yeah. And, if you're not playing you can hear somebody else playing about a mile away. And that's the only, that's what people complain about. I don't like, is that it is so loud. And it kind of disturbs a piece a little bit. Mm-hmm. If you live near a pickleball court, it's loud. We had one in our neighborhood in Sleepy Hollow. Oh, did you? And it wasn't very close to my house, but I felt badly for the people that sort of backed onto it. Right. I mean, they had a little woods between them, but you can, that it really travels. Yeah, no, it does. Yeah. Yeah, it's a fun game though. And would you like playing? I do. I love it. Yeah. But again, not great for the ankle. No. Alright, so should we get into the questions? Yes. I can't wait. Fun, fun, fun. All right, so clearly the questions today, center around the sport of tennis., Just a reminder, I will go through all the questions you can think about them. Jot down your answers on the trivia buzz pod.com scoring sheet. Each answer is worth one point, and then we'll go back around, get Laura's responses, and remind you of each question. Question one. He died in World War I and his friend was president of Stae at the time, and so he recommended they honor his name in, in the, nothing to do with. That's so, so funny. I have a, I have a T-shirt that says Roland Garros. Oh, okay. And question 10. Who beat Bobby Riggs. Oh, that's Billy Jean King. That's right. BJK Hero. Yeah, she, uh, she won the day.
