Pub trivia in the palm of your hand
Hi, and welcome to Trivia Buzz, the trivia quiz game that serves up trivia with a twist.
I'm Laura. And I'm Nancy. And we both love trivia in all forms, but we especially love it paired with a classic cocktail. So we decided to put the two things together and invite you all in to share them with us. The game consists of five rounds of 10 trivia questions that get progressively tougher as the rounds go on. If you'd like, you can play along using the scoring sheet on our website, trivia buzz pod.com. Listeners, we have a guest this week. Please welcome to the pod Kayleigh Neville. Bartender trivia savant and world's best mom. Welcome Kaylee. Hi guys. So good to have you here. Thanks for having me. It's my pleasure. So Kaylee can be found behind the bar at Picasso's in sto, and every once in a while she joins our team and she kills it every time. Yeah. We love when you're part of our team. I know, I know. We're like, oh, is is Kayley playing tonight? Play with us. Sometimes it just too busy. You can't do it. Sometimes it does. I don't think we have ever lost when you've joined us. Every now and then, I feel like I get a category that's suited to me. Well, that's like every week you just, I think there's a lot of categories that suit you. So how did you become a bartender? So I started in restaurants in high school. I started Yep, me too. Started at Red Lobster, like nice. Just, you know, oh yeah. Wow. So many biscuits. Um, and then just kind of worked my way. I, red Lobster, I finally turned 18 and then I could train on the bar. So they trained me and then I worked in breweries and a couple dive bars. And what pulled you to the bar rather than front of house? Like for the restaurant? Yeah, so I did serving too serving's, just different, I like the bar. Mm-hmm. You can form relationships with people easier. On the floor, you're kind of just go, go, go. The bar is like a stage it true. And you're there and you can talk to people and you really get to know people more behind the bar. We really see that with you. And Kayla, like you, you guys have a great rapport with so many people, and one of the things I really love about the Tuesday night trivia is that, it's like going to cheers. You know? It's, everybody knows your name, so is, I mean, you, you're walking in, everyone's waving. Yeah. No way. Hey, I know. It's, it's very inviting. It's fun life in a small town. We love our small town. Yeah. But I think that also happens in trivia night's at different bars in bigger places for sure. But from mostly more so because it's a small town, I guess. And especially because it's the Kaylee and Kayla. Oh, that was so confusing when Kayla joined you. We had a hard time. It took us a while. It takes a while. It took me, I think the longest I could not get it. I think he's still taking Chris time. Oh, he's still working on it? No, I think he's finally got it. Got it. We answered to both. It's okay. Yeah, but it's right. People will come in on non trivia days and, and they'll see one of us and they just say, UNN. And we're like, yes, yes, yes. We, it works. We're gonna answer to that. It's kinda like having twins. Yeah. You know, they'll call you by the other twin's name and you just answer to it. Yeah. We're just, we're bar twins. My nana used to start at the top first grandchild and just work her way down. Just go through them all. And if she couldn't get too fast, she's just like you, you're like, okay. Sometimes I say the dog's name before I actually get to my kid's name. Oh, same, same. Now you have a lot of siblings, don't you? I do. So I grew up with one. Okay. Who's 12 years younger than me. Okay. Um, it was just my mom and I for a while, but my mom used a donor for me to have me by herself. Fascinating. Yeah. So a couple years ago I was just, it was right after I had my last baby. I was talking to my husband. I was like, oh, it'd be really cool if we found out the other side of my history. Yeah. So I did a 23 and me. And did that just open up a, it just opened up every other, a whole new world to you child that was conceived with that Wow. Sperm donor. And are you in touch with your siblings? A couple. So you can connect on the DNA websites uhhuh. So we did that. A couple of them were friends on Instagram or Facebook. Have they been looking for you? It's kind of one of those things where some people, like some of them have known their whole life that they were donor conceived. Mm-hmm. I've always known. Right. My mom was very upfront about it, especially'cause it was just her and I growing up. Right. Until I was 11. You did the math. Yeah. Something's not right here. So she's always been upfront and I, it was always like a cool, fun fact. I technically have a dad, but not really. Um, have you met him? No. So the donor hasn't been found. Okay. Anonymous donor. It's an anonymous and back when all this is happening. The guys that did it did it under the guise of you'll never be found. It's Yeah. Quick way to earn money. But then with all these DNA testing sites, all these things are coming up. Yeah. People can be found. People can be found and sometimes it brings out, some people didn't know they were conceived with a donor, so they don't wanna connect with people. Wow. But I did connect with one of them, we were talking through one of the sites and she's the one that had done a little bit more digging and she was on 23, me and Ancestry, multiple sites. Mm-hmm. And had done the math and said that there was confirmed 19 births Wow. From that donor. But there could be more. So, wow. It's crazy. That is wild. Oh my gosh. So you have so many half siblings. So many half siblings. Yeah. That's incredible. It is. And, and when you were communicating with, the one sibling you were just talking about, did you see a picture of that person? They have the, you can see their profile pictures. Mm-hmm. And it's kind of crazy'cause some of them you can see similarities. Mm. Right. Or even some of them I could see similarities, which is weird, but like with my sibling, that's just from my mom. I guess my sibling and I have that from her, Right, right. Oh, right.'cause it's not in the other path. It's crazy. Yeah. Yeah. Mm-hmm. It was, it's one of those things where, it kind of felt your whole life growing up I was. You just have the one side and it's the other side's always just a mystery and it still kind of is, but Right. Slowly it's filling in the tree. Filling in. Yeah. That is so cool. That is fascinating. I think we could go off an entire hour. Yeah. Talking about this. Yeah. It's crazy. But speaking of family, you have four kids of your own four kids, and they're all under 10. They're under and under. Yeah. And so can you say their names and ages? Yeah. So my daughter Remy is 10, and then we have Felix, who's nine. Then my other son, Terran is six. And then the baby, he's Tate and he's four. The baby, the baby, he'll always be the baby no matter how old he is. He baby, he gets so mad when we refer to him as the baby, but it's hard not to. It is, my kids are in college and I still say to them, well, you're my baby. Oh, of course. Yes. Even people at Picasso refer to him as the baby. No, because he was used to, he was born while I was working there, and so he'll come in. They're like, that's the baby. Yeah, he's. A child now, it's been four years. How, how do you balance four kids and working in a bar? Uh, my mom is a huge help. My mom watches them if John and I both have to work because he works in hospitality as well. He also works in hospitality, so. Yeah. So you're both working usually nights. Yeah. He has a little bit more flexibility'cause he is management but, um, and I mean, I lucked out too. I've been at Pi Costas Long. I have a pretty set schedule. Mm. It's a great family restaurant who is very good to the town and employs a lot of the children too. It does. Well, teenagers, we're gonna, we're gonna just child labor children. We're not talking six year olds. We're talking like teenagers. Yeah. Just put potato out there. He'll be fine. Yeah. He probably, probably would be. He'll handle it. He would be, he'll bust a table. It's fine. Alright, so Nancy, what are we drinking today? Yes. Onto the, the real business of the day. Right. Well today we are drinking, Kaylee's favorite cooler weather drink, which is the old fashioned. It seems to me, I, I have to say, when you said this to us, that it's a very fitting cocktail for a bartender to love because it's, it's iconic and it's very simple. Yeah. Right. You just need to use good ingredients. It's like a, it's like a pizza maker loving a margarita pizza, right? Yeah. If the ingredients are fresh and it's put together correctly, then it's gonna be a good, it's gonna be delicious. You don't need like a bunch of fru. No. So that's why I put an umbrella in your drink. I love it. Yeah. So should we try it? Oh, yes. Yes. It looks delicious. Cheers. Cheers, ladies. Cheers. Cheers. So, in the Old Fashioned, we have one teaspoon sugar, one teaspoon of water, two to three dashes of anser bitters, two ounces of bourbon, orange peel, and cherries to garnish. Mm-hmm. So you add the sugar, the bitters, and water to a mixing glass and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Fill with ice, add the bourbon and stir well to chill and combine strain over glass with a single ice cube. Squeeze the orange peel over the glass and run it around the rim to express the flavorful oils and then add it to the glass garnish with cherries and enjoy. It's also very pretty. It is pretty, yeah. What do you know about Chris, about this drink? Well, what I know is Chris, my husband loves him. Mm-hmm. Um, but in terms of history, uh, it started out and the old fashioned actually started out as a way to refer generally to cocktails. So it wasn't a specific recipe. Okay. It was just, people would ask for a Whiskey cocktail and then eventually make me an old fashioned cocktail. Oh, okay. And then it just kind of got absorbed into, our vernacular and it, it was made a certain way. So it was, so it was started out as like, drink. Yeah, drink. Bring me drink, bring me drink now bring me the drink. The old fashioned, right. Way back in the 17 hundreds, a version of the old fashioned was already being made basically simple drink of whiskey with a few dashes of bitters. Yikes. Uh, yeah. That sounds like it's will. Rough around the edges, a little rough around the edges, but by the time prohibition rolled around, fruit was introduced to the drink the fruit was most likely added to help cover up the poor quality of the bootleg alcohol. Oh, moonshine. But it was so good. It just stood the test of time and it stuck made Its made it past prohibition. Yeah. Okay. So good. Well, well that's a storied history. It certainly is. Yeah. Alright, so Kaylee, um, so simple, so good. And now that we've buttered you up with it, we're gonna put you on the hot seat. All right. I'm ready. So you have so many interests and talents and so varied that there was no shortage of topics for us to ask you about, and we felt confident that you'd be able to answer them as well.
