Nancy & Laura

Hi, and welcome to Trivia Buzz, the trivia quiz game that serves up trivia with a twist.

I'm Laura. And I'm Nancy. And we both love trivia in all forms, but we especially love it paired with a classic cocktail. So we decided to put the two things together and invite you all in to share them with us. The game consists of five rounds of 10 trivia questions that get progressively tougher as the rounds go on. If you'd like, you can play along using the scoring sheet on our website, trivia buzz pod.com. So let's get into it. Um, all, now that we know how to play, I've got a story for you, Nance. Oh, really? And our listeners, because you're jumping right in. I'm jumping right in because this has been, taking up a lot of my life right now. So remember when we were talking about my dog, Gallagher? Mm-hmm. And how he gets quilled a lot. Yeah. The porcupines. Yeah. His nemes. He got killed. Not killed. Oh my God. Oh God. No. Not killed Quilled. A week ago. Yes, I remember that. And that was like, that was bad enough. And we went, it's funny, we go to the vet and they, we walk in, they're like, not again. I'm like, yes. Again, welcome back. So we got that dealt with. Do you also remember what I said when we were talking about, I don't know what you said, at least it wasn't a skunk, and I go, yeah. Oh, oh, oh. He's never been skunked. He's 14 and he goes in the woods all the time. We live in the forest and Yeah, that happened. Dance. That happened, my dog, the time. Oh, for the first time. And he's 14 and a half or something like that. For the very first Chang myself. Oh no, I'm sorry. I know how awful that is. Yeah, I do. I've, it's happened to me twice. Well, not me, but. Jackson, you got Sked. I hope you didn't, I thought something, something stunk. Yeah, well, to be honest, the first time that Jackson got sked, I didn't realize it first. And I picked him up. Yeah. In your arms? Yeah. I, he was outside looking kind of funny. And I went over and I like put my arms around him. I didn't get'em all the way up, but I was in my pajamas and my favorite pajamas. I loved those. Oh, I had to throw'em away. I mean, oh yeah. So basically I was skunked as well. Yeah, that's so he didn't, you didn't get it on you? No. And luckily it was not a direct hit, but Okay. He came in, we were like, oh God, no. No. Haven't even even seen the skunk anywhere near where we live. I don't know where you found it. And what'd you do? Like what's the cleaning regimen? Well, you told me since everyone knows that tomato soup thing or tomato juice does not work. So I did tell her if you ever get skunk, don't do the tomato thing. No, that's just doesn't work. I knew that anyways. Yeah. Um, but it's, I think rubbing alcohol and baking soda and vinegar, white vinegar. And, Dawn is amazing. Dawn is like one of those amazing products. Yeah. They don't, they get the oil off the ducks or whatever, the wildlife when there's a spill. Yeah. Yeah. It's kind of dawn takes, takes grease anyway. You really can't think about it too much. What's in that? Exactly. But you know what I use like that hippie Dr. Broner stuff for our dishes and it just doesn't cook. The grease doesn't, it's not hip grease. It's not No, no. Kumbaya. It will sing Kumbaya though. Oh my God. I have to say, um, you guys, we we're trying a new setup in the way we're sitting and I, it's so funny'cause I'm actually looking at you now. We weren't really looking at each other before. Don't look at me. Don't look at me. This is much it. I just wanna point you go you, you, I know you, you, I know you. Oh, this is much more comfort. This is gonna be silly. Yeah. We're figuring this out, aren't we? We are. Yeah. So, okay. That wasn't. Awesome. No, no, but, but the good thing was I did have your dog for quite a while and thank, thank God was having him when he was there. Oh my God. I would've lo you would've lost it. Lost my too. You know what? I would've lost it. Yeah. Thank you for watching Jackson. You're welcome. He's so easy. Yeah, well he's a little harder right now'cause his ACL but Yeah. But he was, he was a dream. Oh good. I'm glad to hear him. I'm glad I'm a little buddy. Should we get down straight to business?'cause there's a lot to recovers. To recover. To recover. Did we lose something? We're gonna have to recover? No, there's a lot to cover, cover today. Yeah, let's do this. I'm very excited for today's, I'm super excited about this one. Because, today we're gonna be talking about probably one of the topics that's closest to your heart. I think it's literally closest to my heart right now. Oh yeah. You're sure? Yes. I kind of knew what we were gonna be talking about today. So I wore my shirt. Your heart on the state of Massachusetts. Massachusetts. I'm a asshole. You were gonna be talking about the great state of Massachusetts, the Great Bay State. Yes. The Bay State or the Great Dunking Donut state. Oh, the great Dunking Donut state. Exactly. I'm gonna be dropping that in do a hundred times Dunking Donuts. I do. Really? I do the donuts or the coffee or both? I like the coffee. I have to say that some locations are a lot better than others. Mm. So there are some that are just, you're never gonna get a good cup of coffee, but some are really good. Mm-hmm. So you believe America runs on Dunkin? I believe New England runs a Duncan sponsorship maybe. Oh. Paging Dunking Donuts. Hello? Oh, it's just Dunkins now. Oh, what? They drop the donuts? What? That's right. Which I don't know how you feel about that. I don't care. I never get donuts. So, no, not a donut. Fan dunk. Just called Dunkins or Didi. What are you dunking then? My face into my coffee. How's that? Yeah, that works. Okay. So no, I have zero Dunkin Donuts or Dunkin questions. Today. My God, what are you gonna ask me about? Ben? Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Excellent. Yeah. So before we get into that, why don't you tell everybody a little bit about your connection to the mass, born and raised there. Yay. Until I was old enough to go off to school. Mm-hmm. And I grew up on the North Shore, which is north of Boston, like a half hour, 40 minutes north of Boston. So that's pretty, it's beautiful. Really be right on the water. Beautiful. Yep. Right on the water. And I get back there as much as I can.'cause my mom still lives there and my sister's there too. Mm-hmm. So I love it. And I still have a bunch of friends that I see and miss and dear to my heart, so, yeah. You do go back a lot. Yeah. Well, you're not too far, so Yeah. Easy three hours, pretty much. Yeah. And so you only live there or did you live other places in mass? I lived in Mass and then went off to college and then lived in Colorado and San Francisco and a bunch of different places. But after Chris and I got married, we landed in Salem, Salem, mass which city? That's right. Spooky. Yes. That's something we sort of have in common.'cause I lived in Sleepy Hollow, right. So the scary Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Mm-hmm. Love that story. So Nancy and I both love Halloween. We'll talk about that at some point. We love it so much. Love it. So you lived in Salem. You lived in Salem because, did you ever live in Boston? I lived in Boston only for a few months, one summer. I know it's like the rite of passage for every kid to grow up in Massachusetts, to live in Boston, because it is such a great. Small city, but I was only there for two months, but that is where I developed my love for pub trivia. Oh, this is the genesis. This is the genesis. So it was the summer of 97. Mm-hmm. Your summer of love. Summer of love. It was summer love. Chris and I were in Boston and we had, a few of Chris's friends who lived there. And one of them ran pub trivia. Oh. And, he would go around to all these different bars and we would go and play and, they gave money for prizes. Oh, money. Money. Not a beer. Cozy. They keep cold, hard cash. Oh my God. And so we would just follow him around and. And he in no way helped us like with the answers, but we just loved it. And, yeah, and we would win. We won a lot. We skated on. Wow. You those the good old days. Yeah. So Tease Pub was often, tease Pub. Tease Pub was the green line on the near tease. Okay. Yeah. The Subway or whatever you call it. Mm-hmm. Yeah. The Metro in Boston, right? The TI think it's the original Subway in the States. Yeah, I think so. Okay. If memory serves, I saw a really funny Seth Meyers clip.'cause I'm from New Jersey, so New York, New Jersey, tri-state area and so he was talking about the rats in New York and I guess there was a study that just came out that they have a particular. Squeal like squeak. Oh, that they've got New York accents. So he's like, oh, that's amazing. I think we have a recording of one right now. And they like cut to a picture of a rat and he goes, Boston sucks. That's amazing. Oh my God, I love it. It is awesome rivalry between the two great cities. It's kind of awesome. It lost a little bit of its edge when we finally, won the World Series. That is true. And the Evil Empire was Dero for one year. But, well, I don't think they've been good since then. Haven't. Who? The Yankees. I don't really follow anymore. I feel like, no. Mm. Yeah. I don't know. Um, okay. So then, and when, then you lived in Salem and that's where you had your kids? That's where we had our kids. And we were there for 10 years because my work was in Salem. It was the county seat, so all the courts were there. And so when I was actively lawyering, that made a lot of sense. And we were there for 10 years until we moved up here for Chris's work, which I always find amazing because. Not a lot of people move to Vermont for work. I know. Except to find work. Well, his company, I think it's one of the largest private employers in Vermont. From Vermont. Vermont. Mm-hmm. So it made sense. We got pulled up, up here. Lucky. I I know. I didn't even wanna go at the time. I'm like, my life is here in mass, but yeah, I get it. Hey, I wouldn't be sitting here with you if I, we didn't come up here. None of this would happen. None of this, none of this magic. That's the beauty of it. All right. You can't regret any, it's the sliding doors. Yes, it totally is. We were just talking my, I was talking about this with my, I saw a bunch of friends this past weekend. Old friends are long time friends. We're not allowed to say old friends we're not allowed. Um, no. And we were talking a lot about the sliding doors that lead us to different places and alternate realities and it's why it's hard to regret the choices you make if you think about how they lead you to where you are. Absolutely. I always say I'm happy now, so I can't regret anything. Yeah. It's like my kids, they came outta my choices. Not all. That's not what I thought you were gonna say. I was like, oh my God. Where are you going with that? Don't say it. I'm not gonna go there. No. Is anything else you wanna share about Massachusetts before we move on? No, it's a lovely state and, someday you never know. Maybe I'll have a place there. Not permanently, because it's a little dreary in the winter with not a whole lot to do. Yeah. It's a pretty dire winter. Well, it's not as gray and not as long as it is here, but there's less to do. Yeah. Like what's great about here is that there's always skiing. And it's so pretty. Whereas city snow is dirty. Yeah. It just gets dirty immediately. Yeah, exactly. So, do you wanna know what we're going to be drinking today? I do. I it look so good. I'm dying just to have some of it. It is the prettiest color and I recommend that everybody go to our website, trivia buzz pod.com to take a little gander at it.'cause it's gorgeous. It's beautiful. Yeah. And I think it's my new favorite drinker. It's called the Ward eight. Let's try it.'cause it's, I'm waiting too long to have it. Okay. Here. Cheers. I freaking love that. That is so good. That is right up my alley. Yes, I know. Well, the reason I chose it is because it was,'cause you know me. Yes. Both the flavor profile. And the fact that it was created in Massachusetts, in Boston. Oh, yay. So it's sometimes thought of the, the hub of the universe, by the way. Well, well, that's a nickname. Boston is the hub of the universe. It's called The Hub. Is that actually a nickname? Yep. I Okay, that's not in your questions. So it is sometimes seen as the official cocktail of Boston actually. I had never heard of this before. I had never heard of it either. It was created at the turn of the century in the legendary Lock O Cafe in Boston's eighth Ward. Okay. And that's called, that's why it's called The Ward Eight. And it was created to celebrate the election of Martin Omani. Who, was a state legislator and he was a super powerful political boss in Boston. Around what time? What, what year? Uh, I think it was Turn of the Century. Okay. Yeah. 10th Century, 1902. And as many Boston politicians of the time, he was maybe a little corrupt. He just did no, a soup, soul of corruption. Not a Massachusetts politician. Or a politician in general? Maybe some ballot stuffing. You know, you Well, the usual. Yeah. So the drink was actually created before he even won. To celebrate him because they knew who was winning. It was predestined. Yep. And it's pre-stuff. It's basically a riff on the rye, whiskey sour, with Grenadine added, which I know you like as well. I love pomegranate. Yeah. So that's, I love it. So it's two ounces of rye whiskey, a half ounce of fresh lemon juice, a half ounce of fresh orange juice, two teaspoons of grenadine, and then Marino cherries to garnish. And you basically fill the shaker with ice, add the whiskey, the lemon, the orange, the Grenadine shake well, and then strain into your chilled cocktail glass, which we have done here. It is so good. Yeah. You make this one. And the cherries, you know, I love the cherries. I'm gonna have another six splash out. So I wanna tell you a funny story about the lock over actually.'cause when I saw that this was created, the lock over, I'm like, Hey, wait. That sounds familiar. You had mentioned that to me before. What's the story about it? So that's where my brother Bobby had his rehearsal dinner. For his wedding? Yeah. It's why in Boston? Well, he went to bc That's right. He got married at the chapel at bc. Okay. Yeah, maybe it was a while ago. Yes, so it was beautiful old world. It's closed now. It closed in 2012, but at the time The lock over? Yeah, the lock over. it was a grand setting. It was really fun. We had such a fun night. And, a funny story, like my dad, obviously the father of the groom is paying and they came with the bill at the end and my dad looked a little aghast and he turned to the guy and said, um. What did people drink? And he's the guy just straight faced it and said a lot. We're not even gonna, we're not gonna sugarcoat no. They drank a lot. Yeah. Just a lot. A lot. It was a fun night. That sounds awesome. Um, okay, so, so, so I'm gonna gonna get some questions. Yes, you are. I'm so excited. All right, here we go. These are the happy hour questions. For our gal, Laura from Mass. And every question is worth one point. So I'm gonna go through them. Mm-hmm. Don't answer. I'm not going to, you know the drill. I know the drill. You've been here, done this before. All right. Question one. What area of Boston its oldest residential community is known for? Its Italian eateries. Question two. What is the name of the 2016 film by Kenneth Lonnergan starring Casey Affleck as a grief stricken man dealing with unspeakable tragedy, guilt, and depression. It's a real up episode. Brings you, brings you right up. Question three. Bridget Bishop was the first victim of what historical event in Massachusetts. Question four. We'll give you a few moments to wrap up your responses and we'll be back with the answers. All right. We're back with the answers to happy hour. Ready, Laura? I am. I love these questions. Yay. I don't know if I'll get every one of them, but, I'm feeling fairly confident. Okay. Question one. What area of Boston its oldest residential community is known for? Its Italian eateries. That would be the north end? Yes. And I believe you have a sandwich place there that you love, don't you? Not a sandwich place. Oh, it's not a sandwich place. No. What is it? Pizza place. Oh, it's a pizza. Pizza place. Yeah. Regina's Pizza. once upon a time. It was so amazingly excellent. I think it's changed a little bit over the years. Like my parents went on their first date there. Oh. Or one of their first dates there. And it's, it's just always traditionally been such incredibly, and it's still around. It's still there. Wow. I think perhaps it's sold to a different hands or I think maybe the recipe's different. It's a little different, but it's still a standard over there. The north end. Yeah. That's a really cool area of Boston. I like it. All right, question two. What is the name of the 2016 film by Kenneth Lonnergan starring Casey Affleck? That would be Manchester By the Sea. Yes. Do you know a little bit about that place? I do. I might have lived there for 20 years, but you don't call it Manchester by the Sea. Anyone who's ever grown up there or lived there would not ever call it Manchester By the Sea. And when I was growing up, it was just Manchester. Manchester. Okay. But there was a one person crusade, I won't mention any names, but there was a one person crusade to change it and it was changed. To differentiate it from Manchester, New Hampshire. Oh, apparently male would get mixed up. I don't know if that was just the excuse or not, but Huh. So it's Manchester by the Sea and No, the movie does not in any way resemble No. The real Manchester. But did they shoot it there? Uh, I think exterior scenes. Yeah. I think a lot of it was filmed in Marblehead, maybe Salem. Okay. Um, I'm not sure where else Gloucester even. Mm-hmm. And, and there were some scenes in Manchester, but I don't think there were that many. Okay. All right. Question three. Bridget Bishop was the first victim of what historical event that had to have been. The witch trials? Yes. The Salem Witch trials. You weren't there for that, right? No. But, I don't know if I've mentioned the story I might have already mentioned this. Uh, tell it anyway, how my sister worked at the, Salem Courts. Oh. And, in the library. This is Carrie Meredith. Oh, Meredith, okay. She was able to handle, literally handle, the physical evidence from the witch trials. Oh my gosh. Like the voodoo dolls, the pins, like all these things. Yeah. Wow. That's that's crazy. That's very cool. Yeah, I think they're on display now, but they weren't at that time. Okay. Yeah. Question four. Boston is nicknamed Bean Town due to its longstanding association with baked beans. And what's the ingredient in that dish? That is the reason, I am going to guess that it is molasses due to, that's correct. The great molasses flood that claimed lives in. That was crazy in I, I don't know if it was Boston or Charlestown or Somerville. But yeah. Yeah, people died. That's nuts. I, I mean, isn't that crazy? Yeah. And molasses was abundant there because they were processing the rum, getting the sugars and creating molasses from the ships. Slave trade. Yeah. Yeah. So very historical. Question five. And I do love baked beans. Just do, gonna throw it there. Yeah. Boston baked beans. Question five, what is the name of the movement that Massachusetts native Henry David Thoreau was a leading figure in. Of course, like I studied this in school and I'm just not sure if I know the name. Is it like naturalism or Back to Walden? Walden. It's Transcendentalism. Oh my god. Those guys. Yeah, those guys who Emerson hung out at the lake. Hung out at the lake. Yeah. Okay, moving on. What is the nickname for the 37 foot two inch high wall located in a famous ballpark in Boston. That would be the green monster. That is correct, yes. And where is that? Fenway Park. Extra point for that. Now they have seating up there. That's newish, right? Yeah. Like new, this, this century. I think like, maybe, I don't know if it was the late nineties or I think in the early two thousands they, they renovated, I guess, and put seats up there and those are like really good seats. Did you ever sit up there? No. For a long time we had, seasons tickets in the bleachers. Oh, fun. And that was amazing. That's a real Boston experience. Yeah. Just like in the movie Fever Pitch. Yes. I love that movie. The season tickets in the PLAs. It was, I love that movie. It was a riot. Okay, so I saw your face on this one. I'm not sure if you know the name of this ship. Okay. But question seven, what is the name of the ship in the American biographical film? The Perfect Storm. So I know it's um, a woman's name. It's a woman's name. Mm-hmm. So it's like the Maria Christina or the Christina Marie or the Angelie, or you're closer? It's Andrea Gale. Okay. I don't know if I would've come up with that, but yeah, that makes that, yep. Yeah, that's a good film. So I get, have a point for that. Yeah, sure. Okay, thanks. Question eight, Massachusetts was named by English Explorer, John Smith after the Massachusetts tribe of the same name, and after a landform on which many revolutionary battles were fought. Well, I know you're talking about Bunker Hill Hills. Yeah. Near the Great Hill or Large Hill Place. Oh, large. Yes. I did know that. That's what Massachusetts meant. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Okay. So the question confused me a little bit, but Yes. And in Bunker Hills on a Drumlin, which is Oh, the Drumlin, we, yeah, we talked about that. Mm-hmm. Question nine, we have Massachusetts to thank for this most famous of American cookies. Toll house cookies. Yeah. Chocolate chip. A chocolate chip. Yep. She was, Ruth Wakefield was the owner of the Toll House Inn. And where was that in, um, Whitman? Oh, Whitman Mass. Okay. Mm-hmm. I, I've never been there. Yeah. Not to be confused with the Whitman sampler. No. Or maybe it is, right? I don't know. I don't think so. Maybe. And the last question, this is the real toughie. What is the pejorative term for someone from Massachusetts often used when they were found to be driving aggressively? You're a asshole. Yes. Which I, I actually love that term. It's a great term. You were not a asshole though, as it turns out. So you got eight. That's good. I'll take it. You did really well. All right. All right. Take it for the win. Take it for the w Do I get to keep my, Massachusetts card? I think so. And oh wait. You also get the extra point for knowing where the green monster is located. Mm-hmm. So yeah, I'm really a nine. Nine should we move on to the, well, yeah. What do you think? Let's go to the well. Okay. Our first round of general questions. It's called the Well, something to wet the appetite and build your confidence. If you are following along with our score sheet, each correct answer is worth one point. Question one.
