Nancy & Laura

Hi, and welcome to Trivia Buzz, the trivia quiz game that serves up trivia with a twist.

I'm Laura. And I'm Nancy. And we both love trivia in all forms, but we especially love it paired with a classic cocktail. So we decided to put the two things together and invite you all in to share them with us. The game consists of five rounds of 10 trivia questions that get progressively tougher as the rounds go on. If you'd like, you can play along using the scoring sheet on our website, trivia buzz pod.com. Hi, Nance. Hey, Laura. How are you? I'm good on this rainy day. Finally. Some rain. I know We've had a run of like two straight months of glory. Yeah. Gorgeous. Just, yeah. Incredible. Yeah. And I've been traveling a lot. I've been, well, kind of related to what we're gonna be talking about today. I've been traveling to my son's soccer matches. Soccer, you mean football? What? Football? Yes. And, that's been really fun. It's, it's kind of nice, that even though he is at college, I get to sort of continue being a soccer mom a little bit. I know you were such a diehard soccer mom. I really was into it. You were a fan girl. Yeah. so I've been driving down a. Boston, the different games to Providence doing these like one day trips up and back. And, it's been, it's been fun to see'em play, but not fun getting back in town. Oh my God, what is going on? People, you, we know you love our town. It's gorgeous, but I'm telling you, it's not worth the drive up here to sit in two No. Just to sit in the traffic that's been created. It's, it's been nuts. Getting into town is like two hours. It's absolutely bananas. Yeah, I know. it's like you have to just grit your teeth every time you go out. I know. And us locals, we. Definitely try to plan around this. I mean, we, yeah. Don't go into town to save our lives, except today I had to go into town to the vet to pick up my dog once again. Mm-hmm. For another procedure. Mm-hmm. And it was like right at that hour that everybody, every tourist is moving around is tourist hour. So they're here, they're here looking at the leaves. That's what's mostly happening. The leaf keepers, and I can't blame them. We do live in the most gorgeous place. It is it pretty that fall? Yeah. But it's leaves people. No, I know. I'm sure you've seen a leaf before. So Nance, let's head on over to happy hour because I'm very happy. Oh, already? Yes. You're raring to go. Yes, yes. I wanna get down to business. I wanna hear all about soccer. Alright, let's do it then. I know you are very excited about this topic. I am, and I'm so excited to be the one to ask you the questions. I've already started talking about it. Yeah. Well that's good. Perfect. I will be asking you questions to see how much you know about European soccer. Focusing primarily, but not entirely on. Uh, premier League. Okay. Yep. That's the one I know the most about. As our listeners have gathered by now, this is not a topic I know anything about. I know you use your foot. Yes. In your head, in your head and your head. No hands. No hands, no jazz hands unless you're a goalie. Um, so I had to enlist the help of Nancy's sons, Hugo and Leo. So a big shout out to Leo for crafting and drafting and to Hugo for proofing the questions for you today. That's so cool. Okay's so cool. But before we get into the questions, tell us a little bit about how you became so fond of soccer. You know, it's really not big in the US and, um, well, definitely not as big in the US and I'm pretty sure you didn't play growing up, did you? I did not, no. Just for fun. But my brother Bobby played, soccer as a, as a kid growing up, yeah. In high school. And he was pretty good. But he then hurt his knee and so that ended that career. Oh, so you grew up watching his games? Yes. And then of course we had Pele on the Cosmos, which was the local Tri-State team. Okay. And, so there was a bit of like soccer mania happening in the late seventies at that time. I mean, was that like just kind of awe inspiring for you? That I think it was always something, I was in the back of my head and then in the nineties when the women's team was so good, yeah. I always watched all those matches. Okay. And that just continued when my kids got into it. We got them into soccer at the age of like four and, they took to it immediately. They, they loved it. They're just natural athletes. Yeah. But they, this was a sport that they. I mean, they also played baseball, and they were like, yeah, no. Um, no kidding. Yes. So, so there was something really natural Yeah. About soccer for them So, just watching them on that journey was so exciting and they were not just interested in playing, they were interested in watching all the time and learning and stats and things like that. And so I just sort of osmosis, I'm like one of those people, if it's around me, I'm gonna start soaking it up into my brain, and then googling what does that mean? You know? Right. And the other thing the boys got me into was the, fantasy football. Oh, as in soccer. Yeah. And, they like to say now that they've created a monster, because I read The Athletic every morning. That's the first thing I read in the morning. What to understand, like, what are the best transfers I should do here? You know? Wow. That's dedication. I just wanna say I am in first place right now, so Are you really? Yeah. It won't last. That's, that's pretty amazing. So have you been to any soccer matches in the us Yeah. We were, season ticket holders for N-Y-C-F-C. Oh yeah. Which is a weird experience because they play at, Yankee Stadium. What? Yeah, it's, and it's not the right size for a soccer field, so it's very awkward and strange. But it was so easy.'cause we lived in Sleepy Hollow, which was a 20 minute train ride. The train was at the end of our block and we would just, no way. Take the train into easy on, easy. Yeah, yeah. That's awesome. I have a question for you. Yes, do you have a favorite. Is Liverpool your team? I, uh. No comment. What? You're not even gonna, why? Oh. Oh, okay. I think I know what this, this has something to do with your boys, right? Yes. And they don't know who your favorite team, okay. You've gotta talk about this. They think they know. Okay. Why won't you tell them? Well, I, I, I refuse to take sides. Oh, because, okay. So one of your boys likes one team. Yes. Another boy likes a different team. Yes. And then the big boy likes another team. Okay. And so you. And, and, and your favorite is one of those three teams? Maybe. Maybe. But you don't wanna say, because it is, I mean, why would've, why would you care if it weren't? Oh my God. That's so funny. All right. All right. Yep. So, Hmm. Maybe you'll have a favorite I who you'll have to ply me with a cocktail or two to get that outta me. Oh yeah. There's one coming up. Okay, so I love watching soccer or football, but it just cracks me up every time. Someone will grab their shin and keel over, like they have just been stabbed 50 times and you're like, clearly nobody touched them. Like, what is up with that? Okay. That's actually got a name. What is it that is called simulation? AKA faking. Yeah, faking it till you make it. And it works a lot. Doesn't really come on, sometimes they clearly haven't been touched. Oh, yeah. Yeah. They're just trying to, they're just trying it on for size. See if they can get a free kick. They're, they just look like big babies, but that's mostly the Italian teams. Oh, ooh, that's, I'm throwing it down right there. Yeah, you're okay. I get some hate mail on that one. Okay. Um, so what is the, like craziest, most insane thing you've seen like in the stands or on the field or, well, I think the, because I know the fans get pretty, pretty rabid. Yes. Oh, so actually it wasn't a Premier League game, but, um, it was Huts Field. Where's and where's that? Did you already mention that? Oh, huts Field. We took a bus from Manchester North I'm not really sure. Okay. And so they were playing, the Blackburn Rovers, which my kids used to be in a club team in New York, which was associated with that. That team in England. Oh, you're kidding. So that's cool. Yeah. So that was why that whole trip got arranged. Yeah. So with a bunch of other kids and parents too. Exactly. Yeah. And so we went to this town and, you know, it was one of those like classic depressed Northern England mm-hmm. Towns, like maybe there was a coal mine that closed, I'm not sure. Right. The. Situation because they've had so many issues with Hooliganism in England. and this happens everywhere, in all the teams, you're separated. If you are a. If you're at a Liverpool Man United game, if you're a Liverpool supporter, you are in one area. You go in one, one turnstile and you're not able to go over to the other place, you're never twain. Shell meet. Never the twain she meet. So anyway, we were at this place, uh, in Huntersville and I have to say, the area around the stadium was not terrific. And then you go in and it's all these people drinking tons of beer and eating these meat pies and you've got cinder block, like con concrete walls, like hemming you in very tightly. It was, it was a little frightening. Oh my God. Um, and yeah, I mean, no violence happened. It was perfectly fine and right. The game was. The match was actually very good, but it just, yeah, there's a lot of energy and I, I think a lot of booze going Yes. Going on. Yeah. So one time when we were, but you can't drink actually in the stance. Oh, okay. O only in the outside part. So people tend to, you know, load up pound. Yeah, exactly. So when I was a lot younger, my family took us to Ireland and we were staying in Galway and Apparent, I think their team won. I don't know what happened, but we were staying at the Madness, the Galway Inn or the Galway Hotel, and. Madness broke out.'cause their team won. I mean, it was like my mother's like, run for cover. Then we went to bed and they, someone ended up walking in our room and night three of them. Oh my goodness. And they were wasted and they were chatting. It was hilarious. That is hysterical. Nothing, bad happened, but we were just like, what the hell In the wrong room. Yeah. my dad's like, yeah, soccer fans. I'm like, they're crazy. They're crazy. They're crazy in, in their way. And they know they're very passionate. It's very fun how they make up songs. The song will have to do with that player, where they're from and why they love them, and they're very creative. Put a lot of time into it. All right. So, you know, I wanna jump right to the drunkness. I think I know what you have here. I think you do. What is it we're drinking To celebrate my passion for football. It's the gin martini. Mm. And that's my drink. And, um, can you please tell me about your fondness for the gin martini and why it pairs so well with soccer? Well, you know, gin martini, I just think of gin as being very English. Right. Well, yes, it is extremely. And we watch English football, so. Mm-hmm. Um, it does make sense. And I just, I think they taste so good. They're, they're very clean. I don't like it with olives or olive juice or any I like it with a twist. I do, but that's, we're not talking about me today, so. Oh. My husband likes that way too. He's on, he's on Team Olive. Yeah. Okay. Um, yes, so a clean gin martini, preferably with Hendricks gin. That's my fve. Although when I travel, I do like to pick up a local batch. cause gin is kind of like craft beer in a way. It's really very different in different places. Oh, I know. Didn't I get you some in, um, when I went to Rome? Rome? Mm-hmm. Yep. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And then the other thing that I think is important is the vermouth that you use. A dry vermouth. My, my preferred is Dolan. Okay. And, uh, you should always refrigerate it. You taught me that. Yeah. A lot of Americans don't do that. I keep it, it tastes so much better for the one time a year I use it. Yeah. It's just cluttering up your fridge. Cluttering up my fridge. But hey, that's what we do. And then with a nice twist. It's delicious. But I don't know the history of the gin martinis. So can you, can you enlighten me? I will. There are a couple of Aura gin stories. See what you did there. I know that was so miserable. There are a couple of origin stories. Some believe the name came from the brand name Martini Rossi, driver Mo. Oh. A key ingredient in the cocktail. However, the prevailing theory suggests that evolved from a cocktail named the Martinez served sometime in the early 1860s at the Occidental Hotel in San Francisco. Really? I guess people would frequent the lounge there before taking the evening ferry to the nearby town of Martinez, California. Huh, okay. So in order to make a classic gin martini, you will need two and a half ounces of dry gin, such as Hendrix for Nancy's taste spray, or drops of dry moh such as Dolan. Or you could take it and just swish it around the glass and pour it out. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Or as my brother-in-law does, just waves the bottle. That's our, the gin. Yeah, that's our core. And a lemon peel or twist for garnish. So what you wanna do is chill a martini glass and in a shaker filled with ice, add the gin and drops or spray of the vermouth. Shake very well for at least 30 to 45 seconds. Or as my brother-in-law says, until you can't feel your hands anymore. Yeah, that's key. You gotta get all that ice chips in there. Yes. Yeah. Um, run the lemon peel around the inside of the chilled martini glass and along the rim, and strain the martini into the glass and garnish with a twist. Perfect. And then you get perfection. So let's do it. So can we try that? Yeah. Okay. Cheers. Cheers. Cheers. That is delicious. Yeah. Just clean you, this is very clean tasting. Yeah. Very, very palatable. Super clean. Super bright. Delicious. Yummy. Thank you for that. Awesome. Okay, Nance, are you ready for our happy hour questions? I'm ready. Yes. Okay. Perfect. I mean, I could see why that's, it was, it's so fun to watch. Yeah. Exciting. It, it never happens. Right. Yeah. That was like watching the Red Sox win the World Series in 2004. It comes back to this, it always comes back to, this all comes all rows, lead back to Fenway or Boston. All right, question eight. How old was Lamine? Yamal when he made his debut for the Spanish national team becoming the youngest player to represent and score for a country? I think 17. Was he 16? He was 16. Okay. He was 16. Um, but the bonus fact I have here is that he was 17 years old in one day when he won the ufa. Yes. European Championship. The Euros with Spain. Okay. Yeah. I got those two mixed up. So he was, he's, yeah. Very young and fun fact about Lemi and Yamal. He as a baby, as a real little baby, did a commercial with. Messy actually holding him as the baby in the commercial. You've got to be kidding me. So, you know, people say like he was knighted to be the next, you know? Right. He was just like baby, like who wouldn't know? Like a Gerber bee. So maybe you got eight and a half and a half and a half. I'll take it. Well done, Nancy. You know your stuff. Thank you. Great questions. Thank you.
