Pub trivia in the palm of your hand
Hi, and welcome to Trivia Buzz, the trivia quiz game that serves up trivia with a twist.
I'm Laura. And I'm Nancy. And we both love trivia in all forms, but we especially love it paired with a classic cocktail. So we decided to put the two things together and invite you all in to share them with us. The game consists of five rounds of 10 trivia questions that get progressively tougher as the rounds go on. If you'd like, you can play along using the scoring sheet on our website, trivia buzz pod.com. Listeners, we have a guest this week and we are truly honored to have our good friend, Monty Isam. Thanks for joining us. Oh, thank you for having me. Oh, you're jumping right in. Oh, I'm talking right over you. That's okay. We like that. No long pauses. No dead air as, except as right there. You there? That, that was the perfect point. That was it. Yes. Nailed it. So, Monnie, you are an old friend of Nancy and Jason's, but we have just recently met because you live in New York City. Tell me and the listeners a little bit about yourself. So I, I'm a photographer in New York City. I have, that sounds pretty cool right off the bat. Yeah. I gotta say it's better than working for a living. And, and so, I have a, a a family. 14-year-old who is fantastic and a pug oh, Banksy. There you go. Oh, no kidding. Yes, she's, that's pretty awesome. Yeah. Every time that she, uh, pees on the street, it's a, it's a Banksy. It's a Banksy. Yeah. Can you sell it? I mean, outside of that, it's, you know, those are the basics and, uh, and well, what kind of photographer are you? Partner. Oh, you also have a partner? Esay. Yeah. Yeah. She's part of the family. Uh, yeah. So, my partner Estee, that's my longtime 20 year girlfriend, not 20 years old, but for 20 years we've been together. Well, hey, we'd hope so. If you have a 14-year-old Yes. Yeah, I know, right? Otherwise, yeah. It's like you're doing some numbers and Yeah, exactly. Creative. It's not compute. So, as a photographer, I photograph a lot of, portraits of athletes for advertising. I do movie posters. Oh, wow. Can you tell us about when you shot John Stewart? Yes. Like with a camera. So, the first time? Yeah, exactly. The first time that I was on set with John Stewart, I was a photo assistant, and this is back about 98, and we were photographing for his book cover, I think it's called, naked, famous people. I think that's what it's, and so we were, we had a, a TransAm there and a, Abraham Lincoln impersonator who was going to be naked washing this TransAm while John Stewart was like poking over a bush, taking a picture of him. Peeping John. Yes. So, so there's all, you know, I was showing Nancy, I have Polaroids of me there with my shirt off while John Stewart's, like taking little snapshots of me, right. And then vice versa. So anyway, the. The funny thing is, is when he arrived, he showed up with a black garbage bag and he just kind of threw it down. He's like, here, just go through my clothes he literally had his clothes in a trash bag. In a trash bag in a black hefty, and the photographer's like, dude, I'll buy you luggage. Like, John, come on now. You know? So in the middle of the shoot he's like, uh, is there anywhere to get cigarettes? We're going around, silver Cup Studios looking for a vending machine. Nothing. So I say, I'll run out, I'll get you some cigarettes. What is it that you need? And he said, oh no, no, I'll just run with you. So we hop into the cargo van and we roll around to a bodega and he's like, do you need anything? No. He jumps in, he comes out, he asks me, he's like, do you smoke? No, he throws me a pack. He's like, start, geez. Yeah. John Stewart just in the moment is as sharp and as funny as he is on camera. But you usually, photograph, sports figures. Yes. And how did you get into that whole thing? So when I was in art school, I was photographing everything and I did this fashion shoot and I was like, oh man, I'm gonna put red velvet back there and light it. You know, like all this stuff, right? So we're in critique. Photos are up on the wall and this kid named Matt Flore from Seattle, Washington, we'll never forget him. Pivotal moment in my life goes up, looks at the images and says. You have an incredible knack for making beautiful women look ugly on film. That'ss. So rough. Wow. That's unfortunately, I didn't get like bent outta shape, like throw over the table and storm out, I yeah. And I, I kinda looked and I was like, maybe I see what he's talking about. And so I, looked a little inside and said, how is it that I like to photograph and I like to light things very dramatically, real cinematic, lots of deep shadows. I like to show all the character in my subjects. And I said, who doesn't mind if I show a scar on their, under their chin or their eyebrow? And I was like, boxers. Hmm. So I went to some Golden gloves events in Chicago, asked some people if I could photograph'em. Started photographing boxers. Boxers led to athletes. Athletes led to a career. So I just matched. My subject matter to how I like to work. Yeah. That's great. Wow. Yet I'm not much of a sports fan. Really? Yes. Oh, you're kidding. Yeah. Well, that makes it even more intriguing that you've made this your career and this is your forte.'cause it's about the personalities more in my mind it's all about that. And I understand sports understand it really, really well. Know what we're looking for, know what we're getting. But at the same point, whenever someone walks in, I'm not like, oh my God, E here series, series C. Right. You know? Right. I'm fan fangirling. Yeah. I, I'm able to treat an athlete, like I would treat anybody, and it puts them at ease because they're like, Ooh, this you're rare. I'm like, Hey, why don't you let me know what you have going on after this? Because I have a dinner I want to go to with my friends. The faster we can get outta here mm-hmm. The faster that I make it to my dinner. Like, do you have something going on? Like cool, give me what I want. Oh, they must appreciate that so much. Yes, we are. All of a sudden you're equals logged in. I say everybody else here is static. It's you and me, man. You ready? Let's do it. And by the way, can I swear? Yeah. Yeah. I have nothing against it. Okay. It's just a habit. An NPR ended it onto the, uh, hasn't made it onto the pod yet, but, you know, I'm not saying no. All, all right, well, let's, I'm not gonna say no. Hey, I'm just gonna see if maybe I can do it without, okay. Alright. Let's say, let's challenge, Hey Laura, you know, he's actually shot at the US Open Uhuh. Yeah. Yes. I understand you're a tennis fan. I am. Only by listening to previous episodes. Uh, yeah, that would be correct. Yeah. Who did you photograph? In 2004, I was hired to go and, shoot as many of the events as, I could or wanted to. So there I am one of the photographers with like the big long lens and all this stuff and, and, the thing I remember most is that I was photographing, uh, erotic, uh, Anthony, what? No. Andy, Andy Rodd. There you go. Andy Roddick match. And there's a well down below where the rectangular cutouts back behind the players. Yeah. And so, you know, I got the 400 millimeter lens, and he's known for having a monster serve. Oh yeah, I remember. Alright, so there I am. I'm catching him in the serve. Like, okay, there he goes. Click, click, click. And all of a sudden in the lens it gets green real fast. And it, and I feel my camera hit me in the eye. Oh geez. Oh my God. I got a shiner. Oh. He served a, it was like 124 mile an hour. Oh my god. And it just came in and it went right in to the lens, which is, oh, did it shatter the lens, which is No, but it went funk, like right off the front of it and it just jerked back enough that it hit me in the eye and it was like square, like, you know, look right there in your eye. Oh my God. And I was like, what? Just, which just happened. Yeah. Yeah. What just happened? And um, so, but did you get the shot? I mean, the serve looked good. The full green frame didn't look any good, but I can say that Andy Roddick gave me a shiner. That's, that's pretty cool. That is cool. I like that. I like it. Yeah. So there's one other little story I wanted to hear about and,'cause I actually don't know how this came about, but you were just in Happy Gilmore too, the movie. What? Indeed I was. Okay. How did that happen? Well, a buddy of mine calls me up like, dude, did you know they're filming Happy Gilmore near you? Of course, I don't know that. And he's like, they're looking for extras. So I went on the casting website. It looked pretty legit. It. And so I was, I put together a profile, I think about who the Happy Gilmore folks are in the crowd. So I wore an Iron Maiden shirt and all my photos that I put up. Mm-hmm. It's appropriate. Yes. I was like, oh man, I put this in. Let's see how it goes. 10 days later, anything. No, I guess it just, you know, took a shot. Wasn't gonna happen three or four days later. Get the text at like 10:00 PM Are you available tomorrow? 6:00 AM I'm in. You are the luckiest man. I know. I swear. Stuff like this always happens to him. Well, you know, some, some, well, like you gotta put yourself out there obviously is true. You do? Yep. Some, some guy's. Lucky put, some guys ain't put it out in the universe. But yeah, so they hit me up and, the, the casting call was for, a music festival meets Monster Truck meets Demolition Derby attendee. It was like they were casting 300 Montes. Yeah. I was like, perfect. I got this, I got this. I so got this. So, so I show up with some things from my costume drawer and, uh, and wait, wait, say that again? Yes. My costume drawer. My costume drawer. Oh my God, that is amazing. I've been training my whole life for this. So I show up to wardrobe and I'm ready to show all my options. But my first option was a, a blonde Afro wig and a t-shirt that's, it's pink with just a big giant pig face on it. Oh my God. So it looks like if you're standing at 10 feet away, it looks like I'm wearing an entire pig. Like the whole thing is just a realistic pig. And I was like, oh, I have options. They're like, this is perfect. Yeah, no, you nailed it. It the first time around. Yeah. So and so you must be so visible in this scene. Like you can pick yourself out from a mile away if you watch the movie every time you see me drink. Wow. Wow. We finished the day, everything goes great. They asked me to come back the next day. I bring another costume next day. Next day. So I do five days, what? Five days? I did five days as an extra on this in different costumes, in different scenes, in different costume, different wigs, different scenes. Oh, I have to watch the movie. I haven't seen it. Did they sign you on the contract? And he's like, the William, like, we need to email this guy. But I can just, he's got an agent, yeah. It premiered a month ago and yeah, we we filmed this in, uh, October, this past year. Okay. So this is recent. Recent, yeah. Love it. Yeah. Yeah. I, I mean, I'd like to say that I've grown out of this, but No, not, no, not really last months. No, don't grow out it. Please don't. That's not fun. So, Nance, I've got two questions for you. What are we going to be talking about today and what will we be drinking today? Oh, the important stuff. Those are good questions, I know. Yeah. Getting down to business. Okay. I'm gonna start with your first question, which is that Monty had no shortage, as you can see, of things to ask him about. I, I feel like we, we could do a whole show without ever getting into trivia. Exactly. But one particular interest of his seemed perfect for quizzing. Oh yeah. And, that is the fact that he was quite the headbanger as a teen and maybe still even a little bit, it's still there. Or, uh, I can say that I've, I go see Iron Maiden every time they come around. Okay. So yeah. Head banger not, not head banging in a clinical sense. We're talking, uh, yeah, you are into the metal. Yes. Yeah. Well, yes. Yes. And we have a photo of Monty's room as a teenager. Which is entirely covered with posters of heavy metal and hard rock bands. And it's actually really cool how it's curated. You showed me that picture and it was, it was so amazing. Just an entire wall of photographs. Yeah. So I've gotta ask, what did your parents think about this? That's some loud, that's some, that's some music. That's some, it's a bold choice. Yeah. Yeah. Um, were they, were you, were you cranking it up? Two 11? Um, I mean that's,'cause that's what you do. Yeah. I, I wasn't like, oh, you know what, I'm gonna play, play this real, I'm gonna real, just quiet it now go to sleep with this. And he wasn't listening to it in his air pods. Yeah. Uh, no. My parents did not, have Satanic panic or, oh, okay. Good. That's good. My, my dad was not super thrilled when he came home from work one day and in the basement on the entire wall. I had painted a mural of number of the Beast Iron Maiden's album cover. Oh my God. And he's like, who said he could do this? Yeah. That lived until That's amazing. And did it stay? It stayed. It stayed until we moved from that house three years later and someone, someone bought it and was like, dude, this is my place. This is gonna go, oh no, this is my place. I see. Yeah. Yeah. Right. I, I think Dee s Snider, the, on that one person who was like, I think Dee Snider, a Twisted sister, was like, I wanna buy that house. That's phenomenal. Well, so since we're gonna be going to the MTV Head Bangers Ball today, we, picked a drink. That's appropriate for that. Fantastic. And the name of the drink is also a bit of a throwback. It's called the Harvey Wallbanger. Have you had one before? Nice. Nice. I'm trying to think if I have, I may have had one at like a tiki bar, uh, a long time ago. I've never had one before. I've never had one either. This is my, so I'm excited. Yeah. Do you wanna tell the folks a little bit about this drink? I do. The Harvey Wallbanger is one and a half ounces of vodka, five ounces of fresh orange juice, one teaspoon agave syrup, one ounce, Gallo, Gallo, Galliano, Gallo, Gallo, Gallo. That's all I've always said. Orange slice and a marino cherry to garnish. Combine the vodka, orange juice and agave syrup in a Collins glass filled with ice and stairwell slowly pour the Gallo. Over a bar, spoon into the glass and create a floating layer of the looker. That's kind of fun to do. Yeah, I was watching you do it. It was fun. Uh, then garnish with the orange and cherry and serve. Yeah, let's try it. Yeah. Oh, okay. Here it goes. Cheers. Cheers. Cheers. Cheers. Cheers. Cheers. Good to see ya. Thanks for having me. Yum. I like it. I like that it is better than its name. Yeah. Yes. Speaking of which, nice story. Uh, Darlene of the 1970s, a Harvey Wallbanger is a kitsch classic, just like you, Monty. And as with many cocktail origin stories, it's lowers a mix of fact and fiction. The fun story is that it was created by the bartender, Donato Duke. Antone, and I hope I'm saying that right. I love that name In LA for a surfer named Tom Harvey. Harvey supposedly got so drunk he started running into the walls, hence the wallbanger. This is so appropriate. The not so fun story is that it was created by Antone as the Duke's screwdriver, and George Bednar, the marketing director of McKeson Imports, which imported Gallo, gave it the sexier name, the Harvey Wallbanger. I like the first story. Yes. Yeah. I go that the story better, although it is, you know, hey, we know marketing can make lore. Yep. And if that marketing, fellow was so sharp, he would've shortened the Galliano bottle. So it would fit on liquor store shelves. Yes. That is a good point. That is a good segue into a little That is we have here, yes, we are actually drinking a Harvey Wallbanger with a different lcu other than Gallo, because substitute it, it does, it is not sold anywhere in Vermont for the past four years. For, for no other reason than there is no market for it. There's just no market. And also I think it's hard to put on a shelf and, and I think it's hard to put on a shelf. Not only did we look in Vermont, I was in New York last weekend and looked there and in Massachusetts this weekend. Yeah. Laura looked in masse. And so I have found a source and what we're gonna do is we're going to buy it and remake this drink for our next pod and try it. So you're inviting me back for a second episode. Yeah. You're gonna come back. I love this. You just have to stay. Thank you. I mean, the gano is, is much like this. Um, okay. The substitute that we're using, which is UR 43 or Res'cause it's a Spanish lcu and it has vanilla, profiles and orange blossom and lemon. And that's, I do taste the vanilla in there. So, I think with the guliano you'll get the vanilla, but you'll also get like some anise flavors as well. So it'll be a little different, a little different. I, I happen to love this. Yeah, I like, actually I think this is a great, I like this flavor, profile. I like pastis, so I think I might like the other one better. I like Pastis too, but I don't know if I would like it in this. Yeah, could maybe cloud. We, we'll find out. Who knows? Yeah, we will find out. We're gonna find out. Yeah. See, I don't always love anise, but the vanilla, you can taste in this for sure. Okay, so I have another sip'cause you're going into the head bangers ball. Ooh. Alright. All right. This is a celebration of hard rock, glam rock and heavy metal. We're gonna go through all the questions, don't answer them yet. Just you can percolate and then we'll go back around, give people some time to answer, on their scoring sheets. Go back around, repeat the questions, get your answers. Sounds good. And in the happy hour round, every question is worth one point. Question one. Who is the glam metal bassist and larger than life personality who helped spur Van Halen's breakthrough to super stardom by helping them record a demo in 1977. Number two, appearing on all album covers. What is the name of the mascot for the English Heavy Metal Band? Iron Maiden. Question six. Who was the golden locked lead singer of Twisted Sister? Question seven. I have to say Monty's beaming broadly. I think he's got this in the bag so far. Well, I think I already mentioned he bought my childhood home. Exactly. Question seven, who is the recently deceased heavy metal musician known as the Prince of Darkness? Question eight. What hugely popular Metallica song, which was The Soul Single from the album of the same name from 1986, was featured in the season four finale of Stranger Things. Question nine, what Hard Rock Band is associated with the Cold War? Through their song Wind of Change, which became an anthem for revolution when the Berlin Wall fell. And question 10. This is one for the ladies. What is the stage name of the former Front Woman of the Heavy Metal Band Warlock. She's also known as Metal Queen. All right. We're gonna give you a few moments to wrap up your responses and we'll be back with the answers. And we are back with answers to happy hour and, uh, yeah, I mentioned earlier Monty is, um, looking very confident, so I'm, I'm thinking he's going to ace this. I think he might always have that look. Yeah. Just supreme confidence. Okay. Question one. Who is the glam metal bassist and larger than life personality with Van Halen? Yeah. That's Gene Simmons? Mm-hmm. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. I knew you were a really big KISS fan. Mm-hmm. As a younger child, right? Yeah. Yeah. So this was sort of stemmed outta, that's a kiss adjacent alright, question two. Appearing on their album covers. What is the name of the mascot for the English Heavy Metal Band? Iron Maiden. Eddie. Eddie or Eddie? The Head. And this was a little bit of a, I teased this up because I know this has something to do with your career. It does. Growing up. I absolutely loved Iron Maiden, and to this day, it hasn't expired. But their artwork is something that I really, really got into, and that's part of what really attracted me to it. And so I started drawing and painting and recreating their, album artwork Oh, wow. A lot as a kid. So just recently, about a year ago, I reached out to the creator inventor of Eddie and who illustrated and, did all of their artwork, got ahold of his girlfriend, said, Hey, I wanna photograph, Derek, his name's Derek Riggs. Mm. And they were coming through, the east coast. Met up with him, photographed him, did a portrait session with him. And of course he was kind enough to sign a whole bunch of my things. Aw, that's so cool. Is very cool. But I let him know that his artwork and his creations led me into painting artwork, which led me into art school, led me into photography. I became a photographer based on the fact that I started with Iron Maiden artwork I love it. That is a cool story. That's a good story. Alright, moving on to question three though. It became a target of Tipper Gore's for supposedly being a call to violence. What song on Motley Cruise Shouted The devil was actually written as an nephew to an old manager. Is it possible we can return to this question to answer it last? We have to give it to our, our audience. I'm sorry sir. Yep. Your time has expired. Okay. But yeah, it's bastard. Yes. Consider that bastard. Dead, dead bastard. All right. He knows the lyrics. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Question four, known by fans as the bride in the November rain music video, what supermodel was involved with Axl Rose in a much publicized relationship from 91 to 93. Stephanie Seymour. Mm-hmm. Yep. That's right. Everyone remembers Stephanie. I have a funny story about her. Oh, who do tell you met her? Yes. Oh, gosh. Uh, I was a photo assistant, and so, I was on a Victoria's Secret, set. And, Stephanie Seymour was there. And it was time for lunch. She goes, changes outta wardrobe. Comes out topless and goes and starts getting food from a what? Catering right. You were kidding me. No. And what was great, what, you know, if I looked like her, I would too. Yeah. I would just do everything naked. Right? Check it out. Yes. You're welcome. Yeah. It pays to advertise, right? Oh my God. So what the even better part is that she came and sat at the table with crew and photographer and everything and we just sat there and had conversation. Still naked. Topless. So topless. Topless. Yeah. Topless top. Okay. Yeah. And we just sat there. And topless. Topless top. Topless. Topless. Top. Top. That's my million dollar I, my several million dollar idea. Really? Topless, top topless. I've been trying to get this started since the nineties. You better trademark that now. God. Yeah. Dang it. You out there? So any who? Yeah. I mean, was anyone like. Uh, uh, you know, was she like eyes up here and any down here? Yeah. She's like, don't look me in the eye. The right. You're here. How could you not be? Yeah. So, right. How do you not just stare at her? Oh my God. Toplessness. Well, I mean, think about it this way. We'd been on set with her and there she was. Victoria's Secret, you're not exactly leaving a lot to imagine imagination. Yeah. Right. So it really was like, oh, that's the, that's, those are the two pieces that were just missing. You're right. She filled in the picture. Yeah. Oh, now it's all coming down. Yes. Yeah. I, I see it now. That's a great, that's a great picture. Um, great story. She's Thomas, stop. Thomas. Yep. You're feeling in that picture? She's in a kerfuffle over there now. Mm-hmm. Okay, question five. What English rock band featured Rick Allen on drums who lost his left arm in a car accident? Def Leppard. That's right. Yeah. That's right. Yep. And, they went into their most, more, most successful period post accident, right? Yeah. Yeah. With, with his lost arm. Right. They broke Amazing. They really broke with Pyromania. And then they put out, animal after that animal, right? Yes. And then pour, you know, there you go. Pour some sugar on me. And the rest is, I love that song. History. History. Got it. Question six, who was the goldlock lead singer of Twisted Sister who also bought your house? Yes. Oh, I'm gonna have to think about this one. We're not gonna take this anymore. Come on. Alright. We're not gonna take it. D Snider know. It's funny. Yes. D Snider is correct. Mm-hmm. Question seven. Who is a recently deceased? Have you Metal musician known as the Prince of Darkness. That is Ozzy Osborne. RIP? Yes. Yes. My, you know the show? What was it? The show with the Osborn's, the Osborn, o Osborne. The Osbornes. Okay. I remember. That was great. What was the show with the Osborn's, I think it was called. What's the one? The Osborn. What's the one with the Kardashians? Well, I actually watched the Osborne's. I did too, and I really loved it. But there was the funniest scene where Ozzy is, you know, he's doing a walkthrough of a stage before the show is on, and there are these bubbles everywhere. And he's like, bubbles. Bubbles. The king of fricking. Darkness, man. We can't have bubbles. Oh my God. He was plenty to sick. Was comedy gold on that show? He's so great. He was so good. He was so good. Yep. Rip Ozzy. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. All right. Question eight. What Hugely popular Metallica song, which was A Soul Single from the album of the same name from 1986, was featured in the season four finale of Stranger Things Master Master Puppet. Master of Puppet Puppets Puppet. He brought this song up this weekend, actually. Oh, I'm like, oh, okay. I guess he's that one. Yeah. We'll get that one too. Question nine. What Hard rock band is associated with the Cold War through their song Wind of Change? That would be the scorpions. Yes. Yep. That's right. And the rumor has it that the song was actually written by the CIA Ooh, I love theories. You know that. Yes, I do. You know that? Yeah, I do. Okay. Have you looked in that pod? Okay. Can you talk about it a little bit? Yeah. So, the idea was, or at least the, the theory is that the CIA reached out and said, we need to have, this song that will kind of infiltrate the youth and, and the Utes Utes with the idea of the song, with the idea of like, bringing down the wall, like all of this. And so it's rumored that they, they do deny it. They, they, the theory is that heavy metal could bring down the wall that infiltrating the youth. Mm-hmm. Can put social pressure to make sure that the wall comes down. Mm-hmm. Okay. And so. And again, yes. The scorpions deny it. Yeah. But the rumor is, is that the CIA went in and said, we need you to do a song like this. Have they confirmed Judge denied this? They've denied. Denied it, heavily denied it up and down. They have not confirmed, nor they, which is what a CIA agent would do. Would do. Right. It has never been confirmed nor denied to me. Got it. And question ten one for the ladies, what is the stage name of the former Front Woman of the Heavy Metal Band Warlock, also known as the Metal Queen? This one, I don't know letting the ladies down here, but I, uh. I'm gonna send out a flyer on this. Let's see. Uh, well, I know it's not Lita Ford. That, that's, that's the like only female metal singer I know. Yeah. Uh, she's actually German. I think this is a German band. Mm-hmm. Yeah, I know they are. Yeah, I got nothing. I, okay. Yeah. It's, Doro pe Pesh. Yeah. Or pe Do just simply Doro Doro. Yeah. Uh, heard of her. Vasco. Vasco Dema closes very close. That is my default answer to all Jeopardy questions. Vasco. Dema. You got two wrong? Yeah. That's excellent. That's amazing. That's, that's a b plus. We're gonna give you half a point for bastard. No, no, you should what? Just'cause I can sing it to you. Well, yeah, you're gonna have to sing the whole thing right now then. Yeah. Well, I mean, it's so good. I mean, it's like when they're, you know, bastard, consider that bas bastard dead and then Lyric and we won't get screwed again. It was all like, it was very specific. It was like a love letter to a previous manager. All right. That wraps up our, happy hour. Do you wanna keep playing with us? Oh, I would love to. Me like you, the knowledge. Great. You came to the right place. Yeah. You were at the right place for sure. And I understand after happy hour, everyone drinks. Okay. Let's do it.
