Nancy & Laura

Hi, and welcome to Trivia Buzz, the trivia quiz game that serves up trivia with a twist.

I'm Laura. And I'm Nancy. And we both love trivia in all forms, but we especially love it paired with a classic cocktail. So we decided to put the two things together and invite you all in to share them with us. The game consists of five rounds of 10 trivia questions that get progressively tougher as the rounds go on. If you'd like, you can play along using the scoring sheet on our website, trivia buzz pod.com. Laura. It's almost Thanksgiving. I know. It's one of my favorite holidays of the year. I have to say. I love it because it is kind of stress free. Like you're not running around getting the presents and all that. No presents, no crazy decorations. Yep. There's the expectations are a lot different. Yep. There's a lot of eating and drinking and you just have a past for the day. Exactly. I think my mother-in-law said I heard somewhere. That you're supposed to buy two pounds of butter and use all of'em. I'm like, that's right. That is excellent. So what do you do? What's your Thanksgiving, uh, what are your traditions? Well, growing up we, we used to host Okay. You know, all sides of the family and that was great. Um, and then my mother took that on for a long time, but it was getting a little onerous and a lot of, oh, and my sister moved to Connecticut So we all go down and stay at their house. We absolutely invade. That's awesome. There might be a little paddle tennis being played, might be a lot of walks, a lot of games, maybe some trivia games, salad bowl games, and it's just fun. Do you bring something in particular food. Oh my God, how can I forget? It's now become a tradition that I make lemon Drop martinis. Oh. And listeners, if you remember way back in episode one, I think I referred to your legendary. Yeah. You, oh, my lemon drops. Good memory. I forgot about that. Yeah. So I pride myself on my lemon drop, recipe and I I love to share it. I'm sure it makes the Thanksgiving festive. they're pretty good. Mm-hmm. They are delicious. We'll have to feature it on Tribu sometime because the recipe needs to be shared. So I also go to Connecticut. Have you always done that? Because I didn't think that's you did every year. Um, there are definitely years we don't do it. Like last year we didn't do it'cause the boys just went to college and they wanted to come home to Vermont. Yeah. And obviously it's a little harder living in Vermont's a little further. So after traveling from Utah, it was kind of hard to do both. So we, but we'll be going this year and, my brother has everybody over. In many years, it's been a very big event. And many Thanksgivings past. We've done the Turkey trot, before. Oh, really? Yep. Mm-hmm. Yeah. So do we. Yeah. Trot right over to the Turkey. Got a lot of eating to do. And then friends of his come over and it's usually a pretty late night and super fun. I bring potato Gaan. That's my, oh, that's my addition. And I usually bring two kinds. Oh, what? Yeah. One is traditional with Grier and Parm and the other one we use our, own harvested green chili and do, cheddar cheese in it with green chili. It's a spicy one. And my secret for a good, gr ton is to add lemon juice to it, to cut the fat, like it cuts the sort of richness, so that's my dish. Oh, that sounds delicious. I always bring cranberry sauce because Oh, I need to make it fresh. Like you make it fresh. Yeah, yeah, because I have to have that. And sometimes I make different stuff like the, what do you call them with the marshmallows on top? Can Oh, sweet. Oh, like candy M Uhhuh, yeah. Sweet potatoes and, maybe like the green man cas. Yeah. So Thanksgiving on the horizon. Cannot wait. Yeah, me too. But I believe we have some unfinished business. Yeah, the hearkening back to, uh, the last step. The last step with Monty and the Wallbanger. Yeah. So we couldn't find Galliano. Yeah. We couldn't find Galliano anywhere here. Massachusetts, New York. Like what? But you finally found it. Where'd you find it? In Colorado? Of all places. What? Of, I don't know why, but Colorado so random. yeah. And we promised our listeners we'd remake it and do, um, just a comparison of some sort. Yeah. Fair. Thank you. Thank you. Comparison. So just to remind you, last episode we did it with the replacement liqueur 43 or re it's a Spanish liqueur, and this time we did it with the proper liqueur, galeano The big tall yellow bottle. Should we try it? Yeah. Cheers. Cheers, Okay. I'm not just saying this, but I like that better. It almost makes it a different drink. Yeah. And I can't even place my finger on what makes it different. I know you have a better grip on like, I just feel like flavors. The other one was really vanilla. E. It was really too Swedish. It was too sweet for me. Yeah, that has a little more of a tart flavor or I can't even, it's like urbanness to it. Yeah. I mean, I still taste the vanilla, but it's uh, we like it better people. That's all we're saying. That's the bottom line. That's good. You try it. And you tell us, please. Yeah, you tell us. Exactly. Okay. So that, that wraps up that bit we had to take care of right Now that we've taken care of that, what are we drinking today? Yes, I hear, it's something kind of special and you've kept me in the dark. All week. I have. So you see it now. It's very pretty. I know. It is so pretty. I only do pretty drinks for you. Yes, you do. And there's so many pink ones and I love it. I love it. Well, so, um, just to tell you that today we will be talking about one of Laura's, subjects matters that she really loves, which is ancient civilizations, particularly the Roman Empire. Yes. And so in honor of that, I was thinking about what is a very Italian drink right. And what did you find? The negroni comes to mind. It's pretty and Italian. Oh yeah. But I know you don't love it. I'm, I feel like it's not your favorite. It's the Campari is a little bitter. I've tried so hard. Yeah, so hard over the years to like it because it's such a pretty pink color and I wanna drink it. I love it.'cause I'm bitter like the broccoli rob. But you're not, you're just sweet. Well, I like something not in my drinks. I've, I've, I've figured it out. Yeah. It's not everything. It's just my drinks. I like my cocktails. Sweet. Also, I mean, I do like sweet cocktails, but I also like really dry. Like a dirty martini and that kind of stuff. I like that too. So instead of a Campari, this has grapefruit in it. It's a grapefruit Negroni.'cause grapefruit actually has a little bit of bitterness. It has a little bit of the same totally flavor profile of Campari. There is a little teeny bit of Campari, but, um, so, well, let's try it. Cheers. Cheers, dear Again. In one, one game. That's fantastic. Does it do it for you? Totally does it for me and listeners. I'm not just saying that because she made it up for me, but that is really good. Oh, good. I love that. Well, I love grapefruit that bitterness is gone, right? Yeah. And this is a ruby red grapefruit, which it is. I love those. Yeah, they're so good. And, you know, come into season now, so that's great. So the drink is one ounce of fresh grapefruit juice, one ounce of gin, one ounce of sweet vermouth. So it's basically the same way of negroni is, even parts. That's why. It's such a great drink. It's just even, even, even, but then I put a simple, just a half ounce of the Campari, and I put a one teaspoon of sugar just to get a little bit of, yeah. Just to get a little bit of, and, put it all in a mixing glass. First I did it without the ice so that the sugar dissolved and then put some ice in it and then poured it into a glass. And that's it. It's awesome. Thank you so much. God, I'm just gonna have to just keep, going back to our website and checking out all the different drinks that we've come up with that I love. This one will be up there. Yep. Ooh. Another sip. One more sip. We're gonna have one more sip. This is so good. What are we calling this Nance? Well, it's called the Pompeii, of course. Oh my God, that is, that could not be any more. Perfect. Yes. Tell us about how you came to be obsessed with the Roman Empire and all things Italian and. Ancient. Well, it all started back in the seventies. I must've been five or six when my mom took me to an exhibit of Pompeii at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Hmm. And it was an incredible exhibit, and I was just. So in awe of what I was seeing. And I was just a kid and, and my mom says that my, face was pressed up against the glass looking at the, um, plaster casts of mm-hmm. The people who had died in Pompeii. And it just sparked something in me that I've just never been able to get rid of. Wow. So that was the seed that sparked your imagination, that made you learn more? Yeah. Yeah. Oh, gotta love. Gotta love the museums. Absolutely. Bring your kids to museums. Yeah, totally. It's great. And um, NASA is also perfect because I went to Pompeii last year. Yeah. I fulfilled my, um, number one bucket list. I'm glad. And it was everything I ever thought it was that I ever wanted it to be. So it's a pretty amazing place. It is so incredible. I wanna go back. You can feel the spirits. You know, I was so busy following the tour guide mm-hmm. That I think I wasn't really able to just feel the enormity of it all. Mm-hmm. I was checking out the, the architecture and everything else. Sure. And that was so fun. But just to breathe in the, the hugeness of it, I, I think I wanna go back and do in a second time. I took a nap there. Oh, whoa, whoa. What? Why? It was like that, one of those amphitheater type places, you know? Yeah. We didn't even get to that. Oh, it was such a. Beautiful day and I just lied down and took a nap. Well, that's nice. It was 105 when we were there. Oh my goodness. It was, it's too hot. Was miserably hot, but, yep. I'm going back again. Yeah, I'll go with you. Really? Yeah. We go to Herculean too. Sure. Yes. Oh, my course. Okay. I'm getting so excited. But we have questions for you girl. Okay. Okay. Alright, let's do this. Let's do this. Now I'm all fired up. All righty then. Now that you've had your liquid courage? I say this every time, but I'm nervous. You know what, let's just have fun with it. I love the subject matter. I'm just hoping I don't crush out. Well, these questions are all about the ancient world with a focus on Rome. 10 questions. Each answer is worth one point. I will go through the questions and we'll go through them again and get Laura's answers. Question one. This ancient ruler and brilliant military strategist named over 70 cities after himself. Nothing to see here. You know, I, um, I stayed on Isia, which is an island like where Cap Capri is, um, you know, Capri and right off the Naples there. And there was a Sarasin fortress there. Oh, it was so cool. Oh, ancient Sara. Yeah, that was really, do they know like it was just a prehistoric pre Hellenistic just, I don't know. I don't know. Way back. I just remember my meals. Oh, that's good. Was it good? Oh my God. Yeah. Yeah. What was it? It was a very simple, pasta with, um, you know, clams, the baby clam. Mm-hmm. Just so beautiful. The parsley and it was so fresh. The lemon zest was beautiful. Olive oil was amazing. Yeah. And the clams were right from the sea there. Sounds delicious. And I had a wine called La Kristi, which means the Tears of Christ. And it was just so fresh and gorgeous. I've had that. Have you had that? I've had that, yes I have. I had that, um, when we went to, Pompei. Oh my gosh, yes. Oh, well I guess it's probably from that mm-hmm. Area. Mm-hmm. So yeah. So that is like this meal that lives in my head. Oh, that rent free. Okay. We're gonna have to try to recreate that. Yeah. And, um, the younger was Lenny, the younger. Mm-hmm. But, um, some people call it Pliny and I always learned it as Pliny. So I don't, I don't know. Who knows? Okay. Um, but yeah, that's correct. Those are fascinating letters. So, um, Pliny the elder made it out mm-hmm. Before the eruption. Before the eruption then went back to help people and then died in it. Oh my God. Really? Yep. Mm-hmm. When I went there, when I was a teenager, we walked by it in this like gray, dingy kind of a Romanesque obviously. Yeah. Romanesque style. And it just looks like, like it's gonna crumble in any second. And then you walk inside. Oh, it's awe inspiring. I think. Think and it is like not. A day has changed. It looks brand. Yeah. Spanking new. Gorgeous. Huge. And I mentioned this because if you look up, there's an oculus and it's not covered and it often rains and they have to rope off the area under it. Yeah.'cause it's marble and it's very slippery. Yes. It's beautiful though in sun. Absolutely. Oh my God. Stunning. Yeah. All right. I don't know if you're gonna get this one. I might not. Oh, really? The favorite beverage of the Roman Empire? Well, it has to be wine. It's wine. Okay. Thank God. Mixed with water. And I think they would put sugar or just some herbs or something to make it, yeah. Because it wasn't good wine. I think it was herbs. I know they, they diluted it and even children would drink the wine too. Mm-hmm. But it's so funny you asked this question because I was chatting with my mom and she loves ancient history too. And we were talking about what did they drink in Ancient Rome and she thought it was beer. And I'm like, I don't know if it was beer. I didn't think it was, but they did. They did too. They did drink some beer, but it was mostly wine. Yeah. Yeah. Egyptians like their beer a lot. Can I just say a 10 out 10? I more ancient Roman than I am a massive. That's right. That's well done.
