Hi, and welcome to Trivia Buzz, the trivia quiz game that serves up trivia with a twist.
I'm Laura. And I'm Nancy. And we both love trivia in all forms, but we especially love it paired with a classic cocktail. So we decided to put the two things together and invite you all in to share them with us. The game consists of five rounds of 10 trivia questions that get progressively tougher as the rounds go on. If you'd like, you can play along using the scoring sheet on our website, trivia buzz pod.com. Hi Laura. Hey Nance. Welcome home. Oh, thank you. Yeah, was just in Minnesota in the land of a 10,000 lakes or something like that. Yeah, 10,000 Lakes and Prince and Prince. Well that the best part of the whole state. Yep. I went with Jason on a work trip there and I got to meet his really awesome colleagues and um, awesome. I found out that we have some super fans there. We do, we do. Who is that? Yeah. Shout out to Karen and Ryan. Apparently they've been listening along. And Karen and Ryan. Hello, hello. Up north. Yeah, it's fun. It's fun to realize people are listening in. Oh, I love it. So many different places. So many different places. So how was, how was Minnesota? It was great. I went to Paisley Park. Oh, that must've been so cool. Which was pretty awesome. And yeah, I'm sure some Prince questions will be popping up on this pod very soon. I hope so. I hope so. But yeah, it's good to be back in time for the holidays and prepping for that. I know. We are firmly into the holiday season. It's coming up. It's just coming right up on us. Yeah. Yeah. It's now Na. Tell me some of your Christmas traditions. Um, okay. Well one tradition that we always do, and I've done it since I was a kid, is that we open a present on Christmas Eve. Okay. We used to do that too. Um, now was it a any present or was there a specific one that your parents set aside for you to open on that night? So growing up it was like any present, although, although to choose, although sometimes you'd like go to choose one they just did not want you to open and zoom. No, not that one. Oh, that's awesome. How about you? That's so cute. It's, okay. some of the great memories I have from growing up were centered around, Christmas traditions that my parents. Put out, one of them being to go to the Boston Ballet each year and see the Nutcracker. Oh, that's nice. Yeah. I actually really, really loved that. You still go into the Nutcracker with the, the kiddos. Oh, that kid. I'm, I'm kind of teeing you up here. Yeah, yeah. I think you are an As. Yeah. So in order to recreate, some of that childhood magic of mine, I took the kids. Last year. It, well, the year before was our first year going. Oh, okay. And it was so great. We sat, our seats weren't great, but the kids really liked it. And we all went as a family for the first time. And I was delighted. So this year they were like, well, can we get little better seats? I'm like, absolutely. Let's get better seats. Mm-hmm. Let's go to a really nice restaurant. Let's do it up. And it could not have been a bigger fiasco. Train wreck. Train wreck of all train wrecks. let's just say it took, even though we had reservations, it took us an hour past our reservations to get seated. Took us two hours after that to get our food. They, we didn't eat half of it because we were so late. Oh my God. They threw away the rest of our meal inadvertently. Like you didn't get to take it home? No. Oh my. No. And then, I sent the kids ahead of us because they had their license and I sent them ahead of us and said, go get to the theater. It's in the middle. We're getting close to the intermission. At this point, I'm like, just, oh my God, go get there. And they had an accident on the way over. It's a nightmare. And they weren't even close to the theater. This is the nightmare before Christmas. So all in all, we never, we never even went that stinks to the ballet. And I laid out all this money Anyways. WW I'm going with a either alone or with my sister alone this year. Um, but talk, talk about Christmas traditions going to little awry. So you wanna talk about last year? Oh my God. Well, I, I love the tradition of secret Santa. Yes. It's so great. Um, it's so much fun. But yeah, no, I, I think I got a little hosed last year. You think? You think. And I, I might have had a hand in that too. So, so we, we did it together, listener Nancy was so nice to invite our family over to her house and she proposed Yep. Secret Santa swap. Secret Santa ahead of time. And, um. Uh, maybe some people didn't take it as seriously, I'm not sure. Mm-hmm. Namely Chris Liver. I think Chris thought he nailed it. I think he thought he did. He got me a puzzle.'cause we both love puzzles. I do like puzzles and I think it was like a thousand or 2000 pieces, but it was an just a mass of candy canes. It was like an un I mean, maybe for some people it would be a great puzzle. Right. No, that was just way too hard for me. It was just a blur of like green, red, white. I mean, yeah. I think Nancy looked at it and threw the box in the fire. She's like, I donated it to Goodwill. Did she? Yeah. She just like screwed this bug. Someone's gonna love it if someone was a little. Yeah, maybe. Maybe. But you guys came over on the other Christmas tradition we have, which is celebrating my two boys' birthday. Oh, that's right. Yeah. Two days before Christmas. Yep. Which, some people might say it's not the best placement of a birthday. Yeah. I would think, at least from the kid's perspective, they, well, they always loved it because we would do their, party with their friends early in the month. Okay. And then that day Jason and I were always able to take the day off from work, and so we'd do something, as a whole family, so. Oh, that's awesome. Yeah. Now it's like, we'll go skiing. Well, it's kind of perfect because they're both back from school. Yeah. And they're always home. That's right. Right. It ensures that they're always home from college. Yeah. Yeah. Well, that's good. Yeah. That's our other little tradition. Nance, are you ready to get down to business? You taking me back to my old stomping grounds? Uh, yes. It's your turn in the hot seat, Uhhuh. Hold onto your flux capacitor. Okay. You might wanna dial it back because we are going back in time to your roots. And I'm not talking about your hair roots or your teased hair. I No, please, no. But your origin state Yes. Of New Jersey. Jersey, Jersey. Mm-hmm. Oh, tell me about growing up in New Jersey, the garden state. Well, yeah, of course it's a garden state. Right. I mean, I think that's the biggest misconception people have about New Jersey, that it's all highways and the like, but it's actually a lot of it is very, green and Oh, I know. It's beautiful wooded. And it is so beautiful though, the places I've been there, I mean, I've been a bunch of places there, but the places I've been have been absolutely gorgeous. Wooded, farmlands kind of places. But the most common joke is Ha ha What exit are you from? Do you mean turnpike or Parkway? Oh, do tell Turnpikes 10. Parkways 1 31. Oh, so two major roadways through your town. Two ways to get to. Well, like near my town. Okay. Yeah. That's where I would get off. Yeah. Yeah. So, kind of just touching on what you said, what, what's one of the more interesting aspects or something someone else might not know about? Well, first off, I think New Jersey's awesome because it's very multicultural. Yep. But of course it's proximity to New York City. Yeah. I mean, being able to, how, how far was, was I, yeah. How far out were you? Uh, it was like a 45 minute train ride. Oh. That's just like me from Boston. Yeah. So getting into the to New York City was easy. Yeah. Easy peasy. Was it, train station near you? I mean, was it? Yeah, there was one in our town. Yeah. Yeah. Same I would go in, I would sneak out say I was sleeping over someone's house and we'd go to clubs in New York City. So, oh my God, that would've been so awesome was, I mean, we're not talking about an 18. Uh, your drinking age was there at that time. Oh, no. Or was it No, I was 21. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. But they don't card you when you go to a club, they just No. Look at your outfit. That is so awesome. Oh, at, Hmm. I don't know if we can talk about this, but you met Michael AIG once Oh yeah. At, um, limelight. Yeah. Which absolutely blows my mind. And for those who don't know, and of course you should by now, he was, one of those original club kids. Or maybe he wasn't original, but he was a standout club kid who ended up doing prison time. Yes. For, oh, what, what did they say? Now they say, um, unli. Unliving somebody. Oh. Oh my God, I've never heard that. Oh, you haven't? No. Oh, you haven't been listening to a lot of podcasts? Oh my God. Un liveing unliving. Someone consciously uncoupling. Yeah. I'm gonna consciously uncouple you from your life. So you, um, you had met. Michael Allen, I mean, in passing Passed him in a In a club kind of thing. Yeah. I wouldn't say you met, but were people like, oh, that's, oh yeah. Michael Alec. Yeah. One of the original club kids. Well, maybe not that phrase that way at that time.'cause it was as of the time. At the time. Right. Gotcha. Yeah. Um, wait, but before we get to the drink, I have, I, there's a couple questions I have to ask you because you are from New Jersey, so I assume you know these things. Oh, okay. First of all, is Jimmy Hoffa under the Meadowlands? I have to know. I could neither confirm nor deny. Okay. Oh, oh. Nancy knows it's a code of silence. Nancy knows. Yeah. Okay. All right. So, alright. You've answered, the most question pressing questions. Okay? Yes. Okay. Okay. So you asked what we are drinking and, um, we are drinking. That's another pretty pink drink. A beautiful drink. And I'm betting, although red, I'm gonna say red, it's pretty dark. It's. It's like, yeah, it straddles red or really dark pink. I'm gonna say red because it's almost Christmas. Oh, it's holidays. Yes, yes, yes. And there's a green apple slice in it, which, you know, red and green chefs kiss. Yay. So I am betting that many of you have never heard of this cocktail. What's it called? I certainly had not heard of it, but the tresee internet assured me that this is the quintessential New Jersey cocktail, and it's called the Jack Rose. Never heard of it. Who is that? Um, well, can tell you the backstory. Okay. According to David Emery's, the fine art of mixing drinks, the Jack Rose was during the mid 20th century, a pillar of basic cocktail mixing knowledge. The origin of his name is Disputed. Some credit it to an early 20th century hit man called Bald Jack Rose. Okay, well others connected to New Jersey. Bartender Frank Jay May, who was also known as Jack Rose. Okay. So, but what is certain is that the Jack Rose is a New Jersey cocktail through and through its Apple brandy base. Apple jack, AKA jersey Lightning. Oh my God. Is one of the country's oldest, continually produced spirits. Oh, I've never had applejack before. I had never heard of it. And Laird's, L-A-I-R-D-S in New Jersey remains its largest producer to this day. Okay. So that's why it's, isn't that cool? New Jersey's drink. Yeah, I'm sure that's why it's New Jersey's drink. That is cool. But you hadn't heard of it, just like I had never heard of the word eight. So what's in this besides the applejack? Uh, in order to make the Jack Rose take two ounces of apple jack. Mm-hmm. One ounce of grenadine, one half ounce of lemon juice, one half ounce of lime juice. Put it in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake it until you can't feel your fingers anymore, and strain it into a chilled coop or cocktail glass. Nice. And we have garnished it with a slice of green apple it. Yeah, that's really great. And it looks gorgeous, so go check it out on our website. Alright. Alright. Cheers. Cheers. Yum. That is excellent. Yeah. It's really, it is actually kind of tangy, tangy, tart, sour. Yeah. And then at the end you get like that, but a little sweet. You get that apple, almost like a Jolly Rancher apple aftertaste. It really does. I used to drink a lot of apple tinies and I had to stop because it was really coly Sweet. Those are really sweet. Yeah. Yeah. But this is a similar idea, but way better. This is better. Much better. Yeah. I really like it. I'm going to me likey, put that into the heavy rotation. Mm-hmm. So, today the questions are gonna be all about famous New Jersey people. And there are a lot of them. There are a ton. And, it's so funny because, we'll be watching something, the boys and I, and I'll be like, oh, that person's from dead, actors from New Jersey. And they're like, I know everyone is from New Jersey. Everyone's from New Jersey. There's so many, there are so many. And I, I haven't, this is a broad category. I haven't confined this to just. Actors. Okay. No. No. Okay. All sorts of people. Yep. Yep. No short. Plenty people, plenty people to draw from, so, okay. I hope I know these people. All right. Have you done your warmups? Mm-hmm. The little calisthenics and the break there? All right, I'm ready. All right, people, this is happy hour and every question answered correctly is worth one point. And Nance, just as a reminder, we're going to read through all the questions first, and then we will go back over them and answer them. Okay? Got it. Alright. Thank you for the reminder.
