Nancy & Laura

Hi, and welcome to Trivia Buzz, the trivia quiz game that serves up trivia with a twist.

I'm Laura. And I'm Nancy. And we both love trivia in all forms, but we especially love it paired with a classic cocktail. So we decided to put the two things together and invite you all in to share them with us. The game consists of five rounds of 10 trivia questions that get progressively tougher as the rounds go on. If you'd like, you can play along using the scoring sheet on our website, trivia buzz pod.com. Guess what folks? This week we are lucky enough to have a guest with us. We are so excited to welcome our good friend and fellow trivia teammate. Trivia teammate fellow Chesty Puller. Megan Reel. Hello. Thanks for joining us. Hi Megan. Thanks for inviting me. It's always nice to have a guest get kind of sick of asking you questions, I guess. Sick of talking to you so much. Nancy, just looking at your face. That's a Bowe ring. I get to look at another face from me. I know. Look at that Pretty mug. But I am, um, for our listeners, I just have to say I'm the only non redhead here at the moment. That's right. Yes. And I love it's awesome fellow Ginger's. Awesome. So Megan? Yes. Let's see. What should we talk about with you today? Well, first off, let's talk about how we all met. You guys knew each other longer, obviously. That's right. Megan, you've, you grew up here? I grew up in Stowe. Yep. And Laura, and you and I met I think when our kids were in elementary school. Right. So I moved here 14 years ago and I think I met you fairly soon after that. I can't remember exactly when, but our kids were never in the same grade, but like one grade apart. Right. Grade adjacent. So we would Exactly. So I would see you at like Friday morning meeting and just around town. Exactly. And we met on the sidelines because, both of Evan and Alex played soccer. And my boys played soccer too with Evan on the same team at the same time. No, I didn't play with, they didn't play with Alex, but Right. Alex is a little older, but Yeah. Evan played with both the boys. Yeah. Great teams. Yeah. So speaking of long time sto, you are that unicorn, that golden unicorn in sto these days. You're actually a person who has lived here your whole life. Well, you, well you, but you were born here. She, yes, she left, but came back. Yes, exactly. Yeah. I can say that I, in a very tame way experienced STO in the seventies. Ooh. Yeah. We, we've heard stories about those days. Seventies, yeah. Was kind of a. Happening back here. Yeah. It was definitely the age. It was a different era where, you know, the age of the ski bum and, it's sad to see it change so much. Yeah. But it's definitely, it's, oh boy, you must have seen quite the change. Yeah, definitely. It's been an evolution of the town. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. And, but I still love it. I'm still here, so still beautiful. Yep. Yeah. So what, are there like maybe five of you guys? No, there's quite a few people. No, there's quite a few people that grew up here, but I think that, uh, we are certainly few and far between and most of the people, you know, did they move away for a while and then come back or? Pretty much everybody. Yeah. It's, everybody kind of goes away, does their thing and then realizes, oh, this is a nice place to live and a really place to raise kids. Right, exactly. I get that. And so, tell us all a little bit about your upbringing here.'cause it is pretty unusual. Yes, so I grew up in an inn, actually. My parents moved up here from Pennsylvania in the sixties and worked in a hotel for a couple years and then they bought an inn and I was six months old when they bought it. So I, we lived there and worked there and so that's how I grew up. So it was a pretty unique childhood. What was the name of the inn? It was called Log Wood, the Log Wood Inn. And so it was just nice because I'm an only child. It was great to have so many people around and we always had, I had a whole bunch of surrogate older brothers and sisters because we always had ski bums who'd leave college for a semester or longer and come and live with our family and Oh, so to work there to work at my parents and, yeah. Oh, to work there. Yeah. And then you had like people who would come back every year? Mm-hmm. And you would get to know them, weren't you? Yeah, especially over the holidays, we had several families, there'd be the people that come for Christmas, and then it would be almost like a change of guests and then another group that would come in for New Year's. But it was so nice because it was almost always the same group of people coming back every year. Oh, that's cool. So it was like old friends coming to visit. It was, it was like having your family coming home, so it was really pretty cool. So I have a question about the setup of the inn. Like were you in a different wing or like where were, where was the family as opposed to the guests? We had an apartment on one side of the inn. So although my mother occasionally when would be very busy, she would sell my room. Oh no. So I'd have to like, are you kidding? Bunk in with my parents. That's so funny. Or something. Or go stay at my cousin's house. Were you, would that, would that upset you or No? You kind of get it, it's a makay wall of sunshine sort of thing, so Yeah. Right. You'd be getting a new dress, Megan, right? Yeah. Sell that room. It wasn't very often, but it did happen on occasion, wow. And those people are there like. In your room, you know, so they're there to ski and they get like the Barbie doll house in their room. Yeah, right. Exactly. Yeah. That's wild. Did you have to move your stuff out or the Van Halen posters? Oh, way. Okay. Well, no, no, they, it would generally be people who my parents knew pretty well. Okay. Yeah. And so do you keep in touch with any of the people that stay? I do, yeah. There's still some families that I keep in touch with that had become almost, you know, like surrogate aunts and uncles and, so there's a few families that. Still to this day, or, or people that work for my parents. Mm-hmm. So that I still keep in touch with, which is great. Oh, she's our very own Eloise. We were talking about that earlier. We were just like, um, you know, Megan and her skipper D and, uh, weenie. Yes. Sweeney. Yes. Which that was, I loved that book as a kid. That was my absolute favorite. Did you relate to it? Did you see the correlations? Well, certainly in the sense, I mean, obviously I wasn't living at the plaza. Sure. Okay. But it was definitely, I actually was just talking to somebody about this the other day'cause we had a laundry shoot and, it wasn't like a straight down laundry shoot. It was a slide basically from the guest. Oh, those are cool. And that was our favorite place to, when we play hide and go seek it, would nobody, it would ever find. Would you go put down the shoot, get in it, we'd get in the, in the chute, in the walls. You could hold yourself up so nobody would be able to find you. Like a little, little cat burglar hanging the So seventies childhood right there. Yeah. Oh, right. Yeah. God, that is so cool. I love that. definitely, you know, all the hiding out behind the scenes or, were you able to, call room service? No, there was no room service. No room service. But there was pretty much always dessert around somewhere. So fun. That's a good thing. But So you, but your parents would cook dinner too, right? Yes. It was not just bed and breakfast. Right, exactly. Back then a lot of lodges operated on what they called the modified American plan. So would it be breakfast and dinner every night that was, or every day that was served to the guests, so, mm-hmm. Would, would that be included in the price of the room? Mm-hmm. Or, yeah. Yeah. So that's, that's, that's a nice deal. Yeah. So, yeah. Does that exist anymore? I've never heard that. Modified American. What? Modified American plan? Huh? Okay, cool. Also known as MFP, that's shorthand. MAP ski did, because I, I don't ski with you now, but I did. I grew up skiing, both downhill and cross country. Mm-hmm. And my dad used to take us on these ridiculous CrossCountry ski expeditions that, I'd be like four. Oh my gosh. He'd be wondering why I couldn't keep up with him. Come on Megan. Yeah. And certainly definitely a lot of skiing on the mountain, so I kind of did both interchangeably for a long time. And then as a teen more, what's your favorite trail? Oh gosh, now, I mean, I don't really downhill ski anymore. What was it? I used to love spruce a lot. That was always love Big spruce that, because when I was a kid it wasn't open very much. Yeah. Oh, so it was always a treat. Do you mean. Just because of snow coverage, you know, there wasn't as much snow. Thought it would be open more than I would've thought so too. Oh, because there wasn't snowmaking. Yeah. Yeah. There was just a lot less snowmaking. Snowmaking came online when I was in, started to come online when I was in high school, so, mm-hmm. It must have looked so different, the mountain with all of that building. And it did. The lodges were even, I remember it looking incredibly different. Yeah. It's when we were, when we used to come up and stay here years before we moved up here. Yeah. And even, I remember coming in like 2001 and doing Alpine slide. Oh, right. Yeah. Oh, they had one here. We did. Oh yes. It was so fun. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Those are fun. I mean, I can remember when they had. Individual tickets that you could give at the mountain. So you'd pay for, each time you'd go up, you'd have a stack of tickets so you remember when they used to put the little wire through your Oh, yeah. Oh yeah. Jacket and then they'd staple on the ticket. It was a badge of honor to have bunch of those on your jacket. And then they'd pull you in the face. Yes, oh my God. We're going in the way back machine for this, right? Yeah, exactly. Yes. So back then STO was, now it's much more. All season, all season year round. Yeah. Yeah. Uh, there's not even a shoulder season anymore. Not really. It's really there all the time now. Yeah. And so when I was growing up, spring and after foliage were pretty quiet. I mean, it was pretty dead, well around here. So my parents, would. Be 24 7 for all the winter months, and then we'd hit April and from April till at least mid-June, it was pretty quiet. Wow. Okay. Would your parents do anything else to make money or did they pretty much make it all during the winter? It was pretty much during the winter, well, in the summer, I mean, they used to do weddings and things at the end of the summer, but it was always, that was the time to do projects. Ah, because there was always a lot of things of he Right. There'd be renovations or renovation or something. Exactly. Yeah. And then they, where they would travel, so Yeah. So that's where you actually caught the travel dog, right. You. Intrepid. Yeah. My parents, that was sort of their splurge was to, go places. And we took some pretty great long trips when I was a kid. And for like weeks at a time. Yeah. We did a, camping trip across the US for seven weeks and then when I was in high school, we went to here like a camper van? No, we had camper. It was totally something out of, out of vacation. I mean, it was in a, in a woody station wagon. We had, we had a station wagon that my parents, the family truck, the wagon in family Truckster. Oh, oh my god. My god. Yeah. No seatbelt, metallic? No. Literally we were in probably second or third grade. And, my mom put the seats down in the station wagon and bought a fairly thin gymnastics mat that had a line. Fortunately, it ran down the center of it and literally my cousin and I rode all over the United States lying down in the back of the way back. It was the way, way the, it was the best week. Wait, so wait, so not just for naps or whatever we, I mean, we were always little. We didn't nap at that point, but just because Oh my God, God, you were recline. We, yeah, I remember doing that on our road trips. I wanted for like, when, it was dark or, you know, we were driving back from skiing. My mom had like some blankets or sleeping bags put out in the way back. But no, that's how you. Actually travel. Like we were still staring at the ceiling while travel. No, you could sit, I mean, it was not like, you were a kid. You sat up cross-legged and Yeah, we had a, each of us had a basket on our side that had books.'Cause we were all, we weren't in school at that time. They pulled us outta school. So we were Oh, that's about that reading. I thought that I, I figured the seven weeks were all in summer. No, no. It's like be back, had to be mid-June. We had to be back for the summer because it would be busy in Ow It would be busy be stuck. Oh wow. What I would not have given. How did you get around that? It was homeschooling, essentially. Uhhuh. I mean, it was a lot. Looser, looser, Lucy goosey under the, you know yeah. Guise of, yeah. So they, uh, homeschooling. Wow. And, and my cousin and I would have this line. Andy. Andy. Yeah. That was sort of became, don't you dare put a finger over the line, it's like the tape down middle of the room, because you all loop up in a car together. I thought you were, you guys were really close. Oh, we were. But can you imagine you're still getting each other's nerve, right? Being seven. Oh, by the way, hi, Andy. Hi. Shout out Andy. I hope he's listening. I mean, we got along with best friends, but you can imagine being a car together. Yeah. Brothers and sisters, like he's breathing on me. Exactly. Right, right. That's funny. Okay. Did your aunt and uncle go too? No. No. Oh, you just brought handy? Yeah. Because I didn't You need another kid, right? You have a friend. Exactly. Yeah, totally. And so then you also toured Europe for several weeks? Mm-hmm. Yeah, we went, same, similar thing. My parents bought a Volkswagen van, and we traveled around for 10 weeks, yeah. Yeah, but so now as an adult, you travel a lot. We've traveled together, the three of us to Scotland. Almost exactly a year ago, right? Yeah, exactly. We were in Scotland. That was such a good time. It was amazing. Very fun. And you recently did an even more intrepid trip by yourself? It was my first really solo trip. I went and walked the Portuguese Camino. Yeah. From Porto to Santiago to Compostela in Spain. Amazing. What, inspired you to do that? I just, it's just something that I always wanted to do, since I first heard about the Camino probably 20 or so years ago, and I have the root across Northern Spain, which is what most people know, takes 35 days or so, and I didn't have that much time, so I just happened to be doing some research and I realized that they have a lot of different routes and there's one that goes through Portugal and it takes about. Two weeks or so to walk. Did you get lonely or do you feel like you just had so many people around you all the time you were meeting that it was engaging? It wasn't, I didn't find it lonely at all. I met a guy from Siberia that was probably Wow. And then a couple people from Asia. Wow. I met a woman, two women from South Korea, I met a bunch of South Americans. Quite a few people from Columbia, um, and Brazil. It was, really nice to meet so many young women who were. Really choosing to, to. spend their time doing something like that and then and totally. For themselves. Yeah. Yeah. That's great. well that sounds amazing. That's so cool. Yeah. Thank you for taking us down that little memory lane. Um, but we have pressing matters. We have very pressing matters. Especially what we've been staring at. Well, you've been talking, the beautiful drink in front of us. Yes. Megan, you wanna tell us what we're drinking appropriate for the season? I think season we're in here, Christmas season. Although it is a, I guess I thought be more of a little margarita. Well, it's green. Come on. It's a Christmas margarita. It's always margarita season. Yeah. I don't think it, it is. There never goes outta season. Yeah. But it is your favorite drink. I, it's definitely one of my favorites for sure. Yes. You know, I dr. Order it a lot when we go to church. She has'em for breakfast. Megan salt does not, or no salt. I'm a no salt person. I too Oh, I find that a little controversial. I know. Can you really love a margarita if you don't like the salt rim? Yes, you can much, especially if you get a maple margarita. Oh, that's not a margarita. Oh, you wanna bet that's aita. That arita. That's agarita. Yeah. Yes. There we go. Oh, but you like a classic margarita? I do. And up or on the rocks? On the rocks. Great.'cause that's how we made it. Few. So, should we talk about what is in this actual, what is in it? What, what's in it now? Let's drink it first. Oh, you wanna have a sip first and then Yes, please drink first. Talk later. Yeah. I like that. There we go. Okay, here we go. Cheers. that is delicious. That's awesome. I love it. It's got the perfect sweet sour mix. Hopefully we did. Okay. Yes. So this is one and a half ounces of silver tequila. Three quarters of an ounce of fresh lime juice. One ounce of orange liqueur, like, au or quantro, whatever you prefer, sugar syrup to taste. And that sugar syrup, was we just made, equal parts sugar and water, or you boil it together so that the sugar dissolves and then cool it, and you can make a big batch of it and keep it in your fridge, and a lime wedge for garnish. Yeah, you just combine the tequila, the lime juice, the orange liqueur, and the sugar syrup in a shaker filled with ice shake. Well pour into a low ball glass filled with ice and garnish with your lime wedge. So, little history about this drink. The name actually means daisy in Spanish. And, the origin story is not actually known, but it is wildly popular around the world and especially in the United States where Americans drink, get this. 185,000 of these an hour. Oh my gosh. Oh my God. That guy is a boozer. Whoa. Someone go check on him. Yeah, crazy. And the first frozen margarita machine was made in 1971 by a restaurateur named Mariano Martinez. And he adapted a soft serve ice cream machine into a frosty margarita dispenser, which is, stop it. Mind blowing. Frozen margaritas. Mind blowing. Amazing. Yeah. He's an American hero. Like those are the ideas. You're just like, why didn't I think mean? I was, wait, wait. Was he American? Uh oh. Um, we don't know where, who, wherever. Wherever. He, I dunno. I don't know if he was Mexican or, okay. Oh, Mexican American maybe. Who knows? No, he's a hero. We'll have to search that up. He needs, um, like a Congressional medal. Medal Medal of Honor. Yes. We'll have to get on that and we'll start writing our letters now. Thank you, mariano. Um, Laura? Yes. Do you have a funny story about Margarita? I think you do. Yes. Thank you. This is so funny. Okay, so when I was in college at St. Lawrence, I went there only for a couple years, but, I had a friend there named Millie, and she was the funniest thing ever. And, um, silly Millie. Silly Millie. One time the thought that Margarita was a person and would be like, oh, let's go get margaritas. She'd be like, margarita, who's Margarita? Who? I've never heard of Margarita, but she never had a margarita. She has, she just had like know, brain senior moment there. This guy, margarita is a great guy. Oh my God, we love this guy. She got brain freeze while having a frozen margarita. Yeah. So we never let her live that down. It was hilarious. So every time I hear someone order Margarita, I'm like, who's Margarita? Where's Mark? He's here. Where is he? He's here. Someone invited Mark. Do you use that whenever you go to a restaurant with her? When you have to put your name? Well, I haven't seen her in quite a long time, but Oh, when you become famous, that's gonna be the name you do all reservations under. Yes. Oh, Megan, there you go. Is that just a brilliant little idea there? I love it. But, we've actually asked you here for more than just drinking and memory lane ing. We want you to play trivia with us today. All right. And we have some questions around another topic we know you love very much. And that is Broadway, jazz Hands, um, I know you have a history in the theater. Can you tell us a little bit about this? I mean, you're not an I'm not a performer. No, I just, I, I think musical theater is the dividing line among people like cilantro is people either love it or hate it. It's physiological. It's, I happen to be somebody who loves musical theater, I came to, honestly, through my mom was just a theater buff. And so I saw quite a few things when I was a kid. And then when I moved back to Stowe, I was on the board of the STO Theater Guild for a number of years and produced a bunch of shows for them or stage managed them. And then just ironically, left the theater. I mean, I was always involved in the performing arts. I worked as a marketing director at a performing arts center in town. Mm-hmm. But my younger son was, about 10, suddenly got the acting bug. So I came back into musical theater because of You must have been so psyched. Yeah, I was, I, I always wish my mom could have seen it.
