Nancy & Laura

Hi, and welcome to Trivia Buzz, the trivia quiz game that serves up trivia with a twist.

I'm Laura. And I'm Nancy. And we both love trivia in all forms, but we especially love it paired with a classic cocktail. So we decided to put the two things together and invite you all in to share them with us. The game consists of five rounds of 10 trivia questions that get progressively tougher as the rounds go on. If you'd like, you can play along using the scoring sheet on our website, trivia buzz pod.com. Hello listeners and welcome to a brand new guest episode. We are delighted to be in New York City right now with my niece, Casey Duran. Welcome to the Pod Casey. Welcome, Casey. Thank you for having me. Yeah, thanks for being here. Excited. Yeah. Well, we even made the long trip to you because we were so excited to have you on this pod, and I'm especially excited to meet you because Nancy has told me all about you, and I've gotten to know you through your substack. Oh, yes. Thank you for, following along. It's something I started this year. Um, but I'm also a big fan of both of you. I've been following the podcast and telling all my friends, we like fans. Yay. We love fans. More fans. So let's just, tell the listeners a little bit about like where you're from and all that jazz. Yeah. So I'm Nancy's favorite niece. Uh, shout out all the cousins. Um, but I'm from Connecticut and I went to Boston College and lived in Boston for a little bit. Go Eagles. Go Eagles, and then I just moved to New York maybe about four years ago and I'm loving it back to the Upper East Side where I actually was born for a few years. Yes, that's right. You were born here and so maybe like five blocks from where I grew up, so That's crazy. Yeah. That's awesome. Yes. And you actually sport the family name Casey? I do, yes. Aw, yeah. You work here in New York as HR Yes, specialist. I work in hr, people operations, they call it. And work at an ad agency, which, you know, there's a lot. It's very, HR is not boring at an ad agency, I'll say that. Mad Menes a little bit. Really? Yeah. More, more sweatpants though these days than I think I worked in advertising at the End of Bad Men Time. It was Oh, you did? Oh yeah, were there cocktails and martinis at lunch there? There were. We worked in the Chrysler building and our clients were, we. Jose Cuervo. Oh, um, Trojan Condoms. Wow. And Lucky Strike Cigarettes. We were the Sin Agency. That really, really sounds like madman. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. They don't block websites at ad agencies.'cause you could get, you know, you get alcohol condoms. Like you could be doing a pitch for anything. Yeah. You gotta do your research. Yeah. So we also wanted to talk to Casey about your sideline project, which is your substack. Yes. Yeah. So, alright, so I read your entire substack and one of the main, features of your SUBSTACK is your report and it's R-E-P-O-R-T What does it stand for? Yeah, so, um, it's actually something I saw on TikTok. I did not make it up, but, oh, it's reading, eating, playing, obsessing, recommending and treating. So when I first started getting into it, I did it every week, which that was a little hard. Um, some weeks are boring, but, and you did that on. On TikTok. Actually I did that on TikTok and for some reason I got banned from TikTok. I don't know why someone didn't like my videos. I think that's a flex. I think so too. Yeah. I would brag about that and um, it really highlighted how much I love TikTok because it was a stressful couple months before I got back on there watching my videos. Oh, what do you think it was? What do you think got you banned? I do think it was I recommended or obsessed. I don't remember which one. Um, an Instagram account called, can I swear? Yeah, yeah. Okay. Yeah. Um, it's called Girls Carrying Shit and it's pictures of girls like women. Can carry so many things and it's like a picture of a hand and it's a cigarette, a diet coke. Their keys. Oh you know, my god. Coffee. Just like funny pictures of women. I love that. I think about that when I'm unpacking the car and I have like my coffee, my groceries, my laptop, my notebook. My sunglasses. Yeah. About today getting here with all this stuff. We were girls carrying shit around New York City today. Were be like grapefruits and do you need a bag of that? No equipment. Yeah. Yeah. Especially in the city without a car, you know, you, you don't have a car to put your shit in, you have to carry it everywhere. So, yeah. Um, I liked that account. I don't know if that's what got it flagged. I dunno. That's funny. I shouldn't have sworn, I shouldn't have sworn on TikTok, but, I moved over to Substack and decided to do it monthly, I am delayed on doing it, but it's actually been really nice to think about my month and I'm really lucky to live in New York and do really fun things with my friends and my family. Um, I'm always And travel, you travel a lot? Yeah, I do travel a lot this year. I'm actually going to Disney World next week, which is kind of out of character for me. Wow. What is this, research for your substack? It will definitely be mentioned in the Substack. Mm-hmm. How did that trip come about? One of my friends, uh, has a January birthday, which. January birthdays are notoriously hard to get people to celebrate. Yeah. And so she's always wanted, every year she does a trip or she does something big, and this year she wants to drink around the world at Epcot, so we're going to Disney World. And that is so funny. Um, one of my other friends, actually, her husband is in the Navy, so he got us military price tickets. Like she's been to Disney a bunch of times. So I'm going with the experts. I'm not planning anything. There are people who know, like the ins and outs Yeah. Of Disney people. Oh. The amount of lightning these passes I already have. It's all set. Oh, you do need those. Yes. It really makes the experience better. Mm-hmm. So I'm excited. Yeah. Oh, Laura, didn't you say you were reading DC Substack and you saw some. Place that you'd been to? Yes, that kind Rando. Casey, I have to talk about your substack because I was reading this and you went to El Dorado Yes. Canyon in Colorado. Mm-hmm. And that just unlocked this memory for me because I've been there. I've been to that pool. It's awesome. It was. The coolest pool. And I would've gone the rest of my life and never remembered that pool. But I lived in Boulder for five or six years and I didn't get outside of Boulder very much. And one time a friend was like, Hey, let's go. Let's go to this really cool place in El Dorado. And I'm like, okay, great, let's go. And we went to that pool. That is so, it's funny. It's a massive pool. Massive. It's huge. It's public. You have to pay to get in, but mm-hmm. But I mean, it's a public pool. It's, and in the summer in Colorado, when I was visiting my friend, it was, I think close to 100 degrees one of the days. Oh, wow. So that, yeah. Was our option. Um, and we were actually also in your substack at one point, which is kind of cool. You were Yes. Under I think it was recommending. It was recommending. Yes. I've told all of my friends, um, I, yeah, I love trivia and as soon as I knew you were doing it obviously was so excited. But I've actually told a lot of friends that I'm gonna be on it, so I'm sure you're gonna get some more followers as I, tell everyone. We love that. Oh, thanks Casey. We love followers. I do love that too. And so how will people be able to follow you on Substack? They can go, to Substack and search my name, I believe, but I actually think it's just Casey J and Duran Substack. Um, and it would come up, but it's just called the Weekly report or just the report Actually not weekly anymore. Okay, great. So we want followers for you as well. Mm-hmm. That sounds great. Um, well there's one part of your substack we want to talk about specifically. A huge part. Yes. One huge part of it. And that was the challenge that you took place in last year? I guess this is a good reads thing. Yes, it's a good reads thing. Um, at the beginning of the year, you get to say how many books you think you're gonna read, and I love tracking it and seeing the bar go closer to the finish. But I have been reading a lot in the 2020s, I'd say. Like I've always been a big reader, but I started reaching a hundred books easily. Which is kind of crazy easily how she said easily. How Well all the traveling, I mean, I'm, I'm reading on the flights and mm-hmm. Um, I've bit an insomniac, so I do stay up late reading. Mm-hmm. But this year I am going to try and do 150 again. That was my 2025 goal and I surpassed it, which is awesome. Wow. Wow. What was the final number? Final number was one 70. Whoa. That is a lot of books. That is incredible. Alright, Casey, I just have to say, you. You cannot be a mom that I know for sure. You are not a mom. No. That I have a lot of free time, I will say that is, that sounds just delicious. But you're using it Well, yes, I'm using the time. Well, you know, I, I do like TV and movies, but books have become maybe my top out of those three in the last few years. A lot of reading time, not enough, space in my tiny apartment for all the books. So also Big Library Girl. You read physical books? Not online. I, I do both. Oh, you do both. Yeah. I have a Kindle, but I also do buy books. Like I love going into a bookstore. I don't walk into a bookstore without buying a book, so try to stay away. But it's not really audio though. No, not audio. Yeah. So you're physically reading whether it's Sonic, Kindle, or whether it's a paper. Book, real paper. Mm-hmm. You are doing the work? Yes. I'll read on my phone too, like anywhere I am, I, if there's a lull I'm usually reading versus, you know, I like social media too and I will do my scrolls there. But my friend, who was visiting friends earlier this year, or I'm sorry. Wow. We're in 2026 last year, and. My friend at the end of the weekend said, you know, I never understood how you read so many books, but every moment that we weren't doing something and talking, you had your phone out and you would quickly read for a little bit or, read before you went to bed every night, read when you woke up. So I just always pick it up. Yeah. Do you have a favorite genre? I do. I definitely prefer fiction. Uh, this year I am going to try and read some more genres, but I love fiction. I really like romance, but I think, do you like romantic? I do like romantics do. Oh, wait, yes. Wait a minute. What is romantic? Romance? Fantasy. Yes. Yes. Okay. It's, um, I love these like, cross genres. It's a whole genre now. Like people are crazy about it. I wouldn't say I'm crazy about it, but, I've read AAR A Chord of Thorns and Roses. That's a really big one. Okay. Um, and then that's, I think there's five books in that series. And then Fourth Wing is another new popular one. I've heard a lot of people talk about Fourth Wing. Yeah, that one is really good. I did not read the third one because I honestly forgot what happened in the second one. And with Romance, you know, there's a lot of details. There's a lot of, you'd have to go back and reread it. Languages. Yeah. And I just did not have the time, but I have it on my Kindle to read eventually. Wow, that is incredibly impressive. In fact, we thought it was so impressive. It would make a great, topic. For the happy hour quiz. Yeah. You can think about this as your final for all your troubles last year. Oh, goodness. Reading. Goodness. Yeah. We wanna find out how much of that reading you actually retained. Casey. I'm a little nervous. I felt a little bit walking over to a college test, but coming here, we're also not gonna ask you the questions until you've had a cocktail, so, oh, that should help. Oh, good. Yeah. And our cocktail is sitting right in front of us, so we need to talk about that. Yes, yes, we do. Yeah, today. We will be drinking. Where is yours? I dunno. Oh, here it is though. Got it, today we'll be drinking a cocktail named after the famous American author, Ernest Hemingway. Oh, Papa. Yep. Papa. He loved his cocktails. You know that? Mm-hmm. Or just the booze actually. Yeah. But this is his, famous, Hemingway. Daiquiri. Oh. And, I don't You didn't read any Ernest Hemingway last year? I did not. Okay. Well, I don't, I don't typically read books by men, unfortunately. I, I. Did notice that in almost women. Yeah. A of women. Women. Yeah. Well, if you do wanna actually read one of his, I highly recommend Movable Feast, which is his memoir. And it's amazing. I really think you'll like it. So, okay. I'll add that to the list. Put opposed on that one. He can be on the list for next year. Anyway, so he was a notorious drinker and he didn't like his drinks to be sugary. So when a bartender that at the El Floridita, bar in Havana, Cuba, where he lived for a while, created this tart Hemingway daiquiri for him because, it's his go-to cocktail of choice, but he was like, it's too sugary. So, sometimes they called it the Hemingway special or the Papa Doble after his nickname Papa and his desire to double the rum in the classic daiquiri and cut out the sugar syrup entirely. Yeah, that's a good twist on that. Yeah and here is the recipe for the Hemingway Daiquiri, two ounces of white rum, half an ounce of Marino liqueur, such as Ldo favorite. Yes. Favorite, definitely three quarters ounce of fresh lime juice, half an ounce of fresh grapefruit juice, and a lime wheel. To garnish place all the ingredients except the lime whale into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake. Well strain into a chilled coop glass, and serve garnished with a lime whale. Shall we try it? Yes, let's try it. Yes. All right. Cheers. Oh, I mean, oh, that's a surprise. Ooh. What was the surprise? Just the flavor combo. I love it. I know that Marino with the grapefruit. I love it. I wasn't really expecting that. What are your thoughts? Yeah, what do you think, Casey? Um, it's definitely alcohol forward, I would say. I typically don't drink. I think this is way without a soda or a tonic, but it's really good. That's the way Hemingway likes it. We just had to do, we had to keep, come on. No, I like it a lot. All right. Well, now that you have that bevy in your hand, are you ready to play? I am. Let's see what I remember so here we are and Happy hour. We are gonna be rocking and rolling. Yeah. I'm gonna take you back to your emphasis on rock, your college geology class, which was rocks or docs, right? Yes. And you and I had talked once that you, it was, you took the same class, it was not one of your favorite classes. I hated it. And I took it and I was with a bunch of friends and we could not have had a better time in that class. All my friends were at lunch, I had to leave them and they would all pass by the window and I'd be like, oh, I hated class. It was my first thing in the morning. Oh. And so my friend, my friend Andy, and I would go to this class. A bunch of us would go to this class, and then my friend Annie and I would go over to whatever government, government class where we let read Alexis de Toga. Oh my God. So we just had such a good time together nerds. Um. Not really. No. No, no. Never. Alright, so yeah, we're brush up on your geology for the next one. So what, what will we need? We're gonna do something a little different next time. Okay. Um, it's not necessarily a cocktail, but it's Oh, okay. Something a little different. We are, you're gonna need a, did you make this up? No, I did not make this up. Um, you're gonna need a bottle of rye whiskey. So it's like, for one, you're gonna need rock candy. Cloves, oranges, lemons, and a cinnamon stick. It's gonna be cozy. Oh my god. This sounds yummy. It's gonna be, it's gonna be warm. Warm. Is it warm? Alright. Well, I look forward to that. That will be fun. Cool. Don't go. Don't go too tough on me because you know, pretty much all I remember is metamorphic, igneous, and sedimentary. Those are the three questions I'm asking you. Good. Perfect. Love it. All right, Mary Casey, we're gonna, my drink is gone, but I'm going to cheers you guys anyways. Yeah, let's cheers again. One more. Cheers. Empty glasses. thanks, Casey. Thank you. All right. See you later. Bye. Bye, Frank.
