Nancy & Laura

Hi, and welcome to Trivia Buzz, the trivia quiz game that serves up trivia with a twist.

I'm Laura. And I'm Nancy. And we both love trivia in all forms, but we especially love it paired with a classic cocktail. So we decided to put the two things together and invite you all in to share them with us. The game consists of five rounds of 10 trivia questions that get progressively tougher as the rounds go on. If you'd like, you can play along using the scoring sheet on our website, trivia buzz pod.com. Well, here we are back in Snowys Dough and it's so beautiful and snowy and cozy here. But that road trip, that road trip to New York was pretty awesome. It was pretty fun. It was awesome. We, um, started off by dropping Leo off at college and that part was not fun. Yeah, well it was fun having him in the car. It was half the trip. It was, yeah. That was great. And then, yeah, and then we hit the big city. Yeah. And Apple. You know, I just wanna say we did so well with the New York transit system. Okay. Now that we're, we are, the trip is behind us. I can truly say like, I think the subway system was loving us. I know. We were loving it back. I mean, it was just like, I, I love the whole system where you just tap, it's so easy. No, fumbling with tokens or metro cars or anything like that. You just click and you're on. Yeah. And the second we walked onto the, the trains would just disappear. They would just disappear. It would get in and then. It was smooth as silk. So it, so that never happens. And it happened for us. And we didn't, we only took one Uber while we were there and it was such a proud of us. It was such a, um, trip down memory lane. I was to remember which trains to take. Yeah. And what connections to make. I was like, oh yeah, I did here. Nancy killed it. She killed it. Did you like my old stomping grounds? I did. You know what? I loved your old stomping grounds and I love one of our new stomping grounds that, um, the Houston. Cafe or what was it called? Oh, house Hall h. House Hall. Yeah. That was fun. Fun. We played fun trivia guys. We played trivia. We did of course New York and the space inside was really cool. It was so old and it looked well, they had told us it used to be an old FBI. Yeah, but it looked like stables, right? It looked like before that it had been. Yeah, I think so. I think so. It was really cool building. So we had a good time. Super fun. And uh, yeah, those episodes will be coming up. Yeah, we recorded two episodes while we were there and they're pretty awesome. By the time this episode comes out, you'll already have heard. One of those episodes, Casey? Yes. And then we have another one coming up after this one, which is also super fun. JR. R Yeah. JR Yep. So that's a hoot. Yeah. Good times. Good times. Good times. But now we're back here. Are you skiing yet? Are you back skiing or? I haven't skied yet because there's been so much to do Yep. Since we've gotten back. Yep. But you have new skis? I have new skis. How are they? That was my Christmas gift to myself and Chris to me because, I need some encouragement to get out on the mountain.'cause you know me, I'm not, I don't love skiing. Yeah. But that, that certainly helps when you had a nice new gear. I first knew pair of skis, brand new pair skis since the seventies. Oh, wow. Okay. You're a little I'm overdue. Long overdue. Long overdue. Maybe the eighties, but it would've been the early eighties. And I, I hear, I think you and Jason have a similar taste in skis. Yeah. So I. I bought these skis and of course I buy them because of how pretty they are. Oh yeah. Not like for their actual technical abilities, but, they're the coolest looking skis. Mm-hmm. Are, kind of like a deep purple and blue and they're so pretty and they have um, like a mountain scene. Yeah, A mountain scene. Exactly. And as it turns out, Jason got this exact same one. I'm like, yes. Love that. He loves those skis and yeah. A friend of ours saw him skiing on them and was like, do you know those are lady skis? He's like, Jason's in touch with his Really? Who cares? Feminine side. Who cares? They're skis. I mean, is there a difference? No, I'm not really sure. There isn't. It's all marketing. Yeah. Well they marketed straight to him. Right? Well, and me and you. Although, while I was in them at Pinnacle. Mm-hmm. Um, that's the local ski shop. Um. They have these really awesome looking, grateful Dead ones. Oh, they do? Yeah. But of course they don't come in women's sizes, so I couldn't get any. Oh, that's not fair. No, no. Hmm. And then right after that, Bob Weir died, so I was like, oh, imagine these people. This. I really wanted them. Yeah. Yes. Oh, RIP, Bob Weir. RIP Bob. Such a good dude. Yeah. And, and listeners, and you probably remember the first episode, the very first episode of our pod we did a Grateful Dead mm-hmm. Quiz for Laura. Yeah. Big deadhead. Big, big follower, big head. Yeah. Yeah. So that, that hit you hard. I'm sure. That hit me really hard because when Jerry died in 95, I was, I was ready to kind of move on. Mm-hmm. I mean, not, not that I ever wanted him to die. Yeah. But it, it was kinda like, okay, I'm in my mid twenties, like I, or early twenties, whatever it was. I, I need to move on and get on with my life this time. It was like, wow, that part of my life is just absolutely over. Yeah. Done. Can never see them again. But the music's always there. Music's always there. And I guess it's a legacy. I guess I never even knew about this until he died, but he had has this 300 year legacy idea that, what's that? He wants it to keep going for 300 years. The, dead and com dead and co and all that with like John Mayer, whomever, I think, I think that's what he meant. I just saw a photo of John, Mayer playing bob weir's guitar, actually. Oh, that's awesome. Yeah. Yeah. And one of the guitars he played. From the mid nineties on was, his biological brothers, so he was adopted Oh. And didn't meet his biological parents until he was in his fifties I think. Hmm. And, learned that he had a brother who had died already. Oh wow. And that brother was a musician. Mm-hmm. And Bob had taken his guitar, had it fixed up and that's cool. Used didn't said it was so, so that I thought that was a neat story. Yeah. But the one last thing I'm gonna say about Bob is that I did have the pleasure of meeting him once Uhhuh and hanging out with him and talking with him one-on-one. Everyone says he is such a great guy for a long time and he could not have nicer well. Lucky you could not have been. I was, yeah. Super lucky. But um, yeah, I'm sure he remembers it very well. Oh, I'm sure he, yeah, he put it in his memoir, right? He did. He did that moment. Yeah. But he was the nicest guy. So Peace Bobby speaking, speaking of memoirs, I'm reading a book you gave me that I've been to read, I've been heckling What? It's Andre Aga Open. Yeah. You've been heckling me to read it. It's a word. Read it. Like read it, read it, read it. Haran haranguing me. Well, not harassing you, I should say harass not harangue, but harass harassing me. You're saying you're calling me up in the middle of the, the night honking you. I am. I'm like, why are you not reading this yet? And I love it. And funny, funny thing, just another one of those callback moments, I'm just reading it the other day and the Andrea guess is talking about when he is dating Brooke Shields and they're talking about their favorite restaurant in New York. Camp Panola, which we actually went to, we went to was my brother. Yeah. The other day when we were in New York or a couple weeks ago, he was so kind enough to take us out. It was so cool. Oh, it was great. Yes. Shout out. It's like, um, what do you call it? A, a beautiful gesture? No, no. But like, um, haranguing, like one of those, it's an old standard, like Oh, oh yes. Yeah. The place. Yeah. Mm-hmm. So I was psyched to go. I had never been. Had you ever been? I had never been. So we were newbies. Now we know it's, uh, Andrea Agassi's favorite spot, so, well, okay. So we have other things to get to though. Yeah. Um, we have a quiz for Miss Laura here today. You know, I have to say, I always love when I'm answering questions. Do you? I, yeah. I love it. It's super fun. Yeah, I know, but I also like writing the questions I love that too. Yeah. Because then you learn. Yeah. So we're gonna get moving here. Okay. And, also just to talk about the drink a little. We have done something a little different this week. and I think that's kind of fun. So today, Laura. Mm-hmm. We'll be asking you about Wait for it. Rocks. Rock. Not rock and roll. Rock and roll. Not rock and roll. Just rocks. Just rocks That don't roll. Very sexy. I, I'm, I'm one of those weirdos. I absolutely love rocks. I'm one of those people, if we're going on a hike or something and I see a cool rock, it will end up in my pocket. I know, I know. And I'm sorry, I, I think I'm just bitter from my experience in college, taking a Rocks for Jocks class and just, well, you should never take something right after lunch when all your friends are walking by the window. That's exactly what happened. Every class. And I just hated it. I had really zero interest in it, and I thought it was gonna be one of those just phone it in. Right. Shouldn't have stopped going to the classes. It is not, I, I have to say, I had such a good experience with my geology in college that I. Wanted to make it my major. See, that's the thing. Until I went, it's often the teacher, it's, it was a teacher, but also I got to the next level and I'm like, oh, I got a lot harder. This is really hard. Yeah. Like, um, fluvial, whatever is all math and algebra. Oh, that's, that's entirely quiz is going to be about Perfect. Perfect. You have a pen and paper there? Yeah. No, no. I don't need it. It's all in my head. Oh, it's all in head. Mm-hmm. Of course it is, of course. But yeah, it, I, that teacher was exceedingly boring. I remember. That's so bad. So how do you develop that love? You had the great teacher. I mean, we had a good, a good lucky teacher and, but, uh, my friends and I were, we, I took this my sophomore year in the very first week. This class takes a field trip. Oh. From. New York. Mm-hmm. Where I was going to school, to Vermont. Oh, wow. Because, the oldest rocks in the world are in Vermont. Yeah. Did you go to Barry? We did. I thought you might, but even before that, we pulled the bus over on the side of Route 89 Uhhuh, and, checked out all these outcroppings.'cause I don't know if you've noticed, but if you drive up and down 89, you can see clearly, um, the the activity in the rock. Mm-hmm. You can see where it's been like lifted and crushed and folded in its much. That's all these, all these intrusions and veins and all that. Mm-hmm. So, um, so we had a, like a week of bonding together. You went on a one week field trip? It was four days, but it was college. College. Wow. Yeah. Yeah. We, we were camping out. My, we were having fun. It was, I never went on a field trip in college. Right. And then we had to write this big journal on it mm-hmm. And turn it in. And my friend Whitney and I, she goes by Liv now, but we had such a great time. Writing these. We were laughing, putting glitter on them with picture and we got a's it was the best. So that sounds like a fun cloth that a lot fun. Maybe. I would've liked lot of fun. Liked rocks. You would have. Wow. I need a redo on that. What, is that the only thing that got you into well, rocks or That and also, um, the lab tech bought me a Herkimer diamond. Wait, what? Yeah, he was, he was super nice. Okay. He looked like Bob Ross. Oh my God. And he took a shine to me and bought me a Herkimer diamond and I felt really awkward about it. Whoa. And everyone was laughing at me for the entire semester. Oh my gosh. I know that's so funny wow. So he took a shine to you? He did. He did. He did. He found a diamond in the rough I'm still in the rough. You're still in the rough. Mm-hmm. Okay. Um, okay, so what? Please let me have some of this drink. I know it's really a beautiful brown color, isn't it? Looks so good. I know. The brown liquids. It looks so good. I'm, I'm, I'm looking a brown drink. Neat. Yes, you have yours. Neat. I have mine on the rocks. Yes. So what is it? So instead of a, a cocktail this week what we're sipping is an infused lcu Ooh. And it's called the Rock and Rye Whiskey. You see what I did there? What? You like that? Yeah. I have never heard of this. Well, actually there's a package version of it that's big in mass called Rock and Rye. And I don't know who makes it, but when I went to go get the rye to make this The guy at the liquor store started chatting about that and he was like, it was so, it was really popular for a long time and now he just doesn't sell any. But yeah, you can actually get it all pre-made. Oh, wow. But we made it ourselves. And, and now I said, I've never heard of this, but then did that jog your memory? I just correct it. Yeah. It was a line from, it all comes back to the Grateful Dead. Oh. It's a line from Grateful Dead Song, Mississippi Uptown Tulu. And they say, oh yeah, have a cup of rock and r Oh, there you go. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Well, so this is kind of an old school, old timey recipe. Mm-hmm. And it's from the 19th century and it was seen as a cure-all, it was actually medicine at the time. It still is Nancy. Yeah. Yeah. I know. Specifically for coughs at that time. Oh. It's a different kind of medicine for us now. Okay. Yeah. Um, it was sold at Pharmac. And it's perfect. That was, that was back when like cocaine was sold in farm. Exactly. Exactly. Do you want, and they'll be like, you know, here's your, you know, aspirin. Do you want some cocaine with that too, too? Do you want some cocaine with that? Do you want some heroin in with, without the cocaine? I can throw the heroin in for free. Opium is totally free of charge. It's all good. It was originally made with something called whore hound. Whore hound. And she's a bitter perennial, lemme just tell you that. Is the actual or named? Yeah. No, w. Oh, just the h. Okay. Well that kind of takes some fun outta that. Yeah. It's in the Mint family, but, um, oh, never heard of it. Yeah, I did. We didn't make it with that because that's kind of hard to find, you think. Um, and it was, folk medicine, right? Mm-hmm. And, it was a key, and I guess Jorge was a key ingredient in all, like cough medicine at that time in lozenges, including in Rico lab products. Well, I'm not surprised because doesn't that have like a million herbs and, yeah. So on. Yeah. So is it grown in the US or not Indigenous? Maybe. Or maybe it is. Who knows? I don't know. I think, well, I mean, mints grow is like a weed here. So right now I'm gonna, I'm going to look that up. Yeah, we're gonna have to, so as a medicine, rock and rye was taxed at a lower rate than liquor. And, so it was super profitable. And in 1883, the drink was finally reclassified as a distilled spirit. So it lost that bonus. Okay. Yeah. And so what's in this? So, you take a bottle of rye whiskey, a 750 mil, classic mm-hmm. Bottle of rye whiskey, and I put it in a decanter. Mm-hmm. And then add cinnamon, two cinnamon sticks, one plain sugar rock candy stick. That is so awesome. One teaspoon of whole clove. Can I? Mm-hmm. Yeah. Can I ask you why the candy stick as opposed to just some sugar? Well, you could use. Regular sugar too, but it's just, but it's way more cool. It's kind of fun. It is very fun. Yeah. I think also the crystallized sugar might be clearer. Yeah. You know? Okay. Not so it won't make it cloudy. Mm-hmm. Uh, two orange slices and two lemon slices. So what you do is you combine the whiskey, the cinnamon, the rock candy, and the cloves in a sealable glass container. And you keep it in a cool dark place for at least two days. And then you pull it out and add the orange and lemon slices, and then you seal it again and infuse it for another day or two. And, you can taste it to make sure it's got enough of the flavors and therefore you, and you can then strain out the solids Okay. To get any impurities out of there mm-hmm. That come off the fruit especially. And you can keep it in a sealable glass container for up to two months in the fridge. And so you could drink it on the rocks like I'm doing, or, meat or in a cup of tea, like a hot toddie. Very versatile. Yeah. Can I try it now? Please? Let's try it, please. Okay. Cheers. Cheers. Lemme get over there. Wow, that is really good. It's so smooth. It is really good. Yeah. Okay. Because I, like, every once in a while I have a little brown, liquor before I go to bed. Mm-hmm. Just like one finger. Yep. Yep. But it's really harsh. It depends on which one you get. It can be really, yeah. Tough on the throat. Think you get in the throat. I have a funny story about the one finger thing, or it's actually two fingers. So my, my friend's father used to say he wants, he ask him to pour him two. Mm-hmm. Two fingers of whiskey. Right. Not this way, but vertically. That is perfect. Yeah. Well, he might even go light and just do one. There you go. One bigger. Yeah, just do the one. I'm just gonna have one now. Um. That's hilarious. Yeah, it's pretty funny. So yeah, this is delicious. I'm liking the rock and ride. I love this. Nancy, thank you for this. I love this. You are super fun. Are you ready for the trivia now? I can't wait for the trivia. Well you don't have to wait any longer. Excellent. Is it happy hour time? It is. Happy hour quiz time. That was our happy hour. Drink time. Mm-hmm. This is a happy hour Quiz time now. And as a reminder. We're gonna go through the questions and then you can answer after we go through'em a second time. Each correct answer is worth one point. Okay? Question one. What is another name for Py Wright? Question two. What is the largest tectonic plate? Question three, what are the three types of rock? Question four. Which of the three types of rock is formed from the cooling and solidification of magma or lava? Question five, two fine gemstones are from the exact same mineral. Question seven, what is the softest naturally forming mineral? Question eight, what is the most earthquake prone state in the United States? Question nine. Crater Lake is an example of what geological feature which forms after a collapse of land following a volcanic eruption. And question 10 Earth's core, a dense metallic ball is primarily made up of what? Two elements. And I had to ask Laura, you did not. Yeah. I'm so mad at you already. Okay, we're gonna give you a few moments to wrap up your responses and we'll be back with the answers. And we're back with the answers to happy hour. Laura, you're like, I cannot read you, I cannot read your face. I, well, I wanted you to not. Yeah, well you read me first few like, I dunno. I see a poker face here. I tried to poke it at the end. PPP okay, here we go. Question one. What is another name for pyrite? Fools gold. That's correct. So, when I was at St. Lawrence, where I had that geology class, yeah. There was a waterfall area deep in the woods called Pieties, had tons of fools gold there. Mm-hmm. Oh, that's pretty cool. Yeah, that was cool. Do you have to pan for it as well? Is it, is it the same sort of situation? I don't remember. I think it was just kind of chunks of it, and I was like, oh my God, it's cold. Rich's gold. They're like, that's full scold ties. Hello. And I'm like, oh, okay. And then they scooped it all up and ran. Right, exactly. Yep. Question two, what is the largest tectonic plate? Oh, that has to be, the Pacific or the, the ring of fire, whatever. The Pacific. The Pacific, okay. Yeah, you got it. Yeah. Question three. What are the three types of rock? Those are sedimentary, igneous, oh my God. I was just talking about this. The other sedimentary. Ign Metamorphic. You are correct. Okay. My God. Ding, ding, ding. Question four. Which of those three types of rock is formed from the cooling and solidification of magma or lava? That's igneous and it is basalt. I think you're looking for basalt. Yeah. Well, you didn't I just, or obsidian or which one it comes from? Yeah. Oh yeah. Igneous. Igneous. Yeah. Mm-hmm. You got it. Well, you want extra points? Yes. Three sixteenths. There you go. Three sixteenths. Um, question five. Two fine. Gemstones are from the exact same mineral. The mineral carum rubies are one. What is the other? It sets sapphire. It is sapphire. Few. Few, few. Bluey. I wasn't sure about that one. Yeah. All right. Five for five. Here we go. Question six, made of soft white chalk. What magnificent geological structure can be seen from the Port of Cal A on a clear day? I can only imagine. It's a great barrier reef. Kelly France. Well, I was gonna say I knew Kelly France. I have no idea. I've actually been there. It's the White Cliffs of Dover. Oh my God. I do you know it well. Yeah. I haven't been there, but yeah, of course I know the white cliffs. That's so dumb. I was thinking not towards England. I was thinking just out to sea. I thought it was a sea future. Got it. Got it. Oh well. Okay. All right. You're still doing well. I was thinking, I was thinking there must be a Kelly in Australia. Yeah. Right. Oh yeah. That is a big, that is a big structure too. Question seven. What is the softest naturally forming mineral? It's gotta be talc. It is talc. Okay. All right. That's zero on the most scale. Oh, that's right. Yeah. We've had that question. We, yeah. Question eight, what is the most earthquake prone state in the United States? This is a little tricky because, we've got three states, well, five states that are on the ring of fire. Mm-hmm. Oh, I feel like I'm on. Who wants to be a Millionaire? I've gotta like, talk my way down. Do you need a phone? So I don't think it's Hawaii because it's not, it, it's not Hawaii. Um, so that leaves, I mean, I wanna say California, but I know Alaska gets a lot of them too. I was just gonna go California, Alaska. Dang it. I thought you were gonna go there. I was so close, but, oh, I mentioned it. How's that? Yes. Hey, another three six. Three six right there. Okay, question nine. Crater Lake is an example of what geological feature, which forms after a collapse of land following a volcanic eruption. That's a Caldera. That is a Caldera. Excellent. Okay. Woo. Woo. Last question. Okay. Your favorite. Oh my God, you are bringing my not so good percentile down. Go ahead. Earth's core. A dense metallic ball is primarily made up of what? Two elements? What? Two elements? Yeah. Maybe you can give me one nickel's in there. Nickel is in there. Iron? Yes. Oh my. She got'em both. She got'em both. And for that, I'm gonna give you two points actually. Oh my God. Okay. I'm so proud of you for getting that. Thank you. So that brings you up to an eight, I think listeners well done. We have no, that is, that is a definite eight. Mm-hmm. That was a full eight. Yeah, I think so. Yeah. But I only had gotten two other wrongs, so if you're giving me an extra point, that's so then you're nine. Yay. Oh my God. I can't even do the math. Yeah. So we've had that question so many times At trivia, at Picasso, at our times. Trivia many. Mm-hmm. And it never sticks. I we're all like, why? Oh my God. I don't know. Because you know what, there's, they ask us about what's in the core of the earth, and then they ask us what's on the surface of the earth. Mm-hmm. And so, and they're different answers. And I think we're, we just, we're not scientists. We don't, I just play one on tv. We just play one In trivia. Oh my gosh. So well done. I'm so, thank you. Thank God it wasn't that well done. I mean, I didn't get the Cliffs of Dover. Well, you know, but see, it's a little known fact. Mm-hmm. That you can see the Great Barrier Reef from Kelly. It It's true. It's true. Yeah. It's that big, big, like just in the distance. It's just a little bit. Yeah. No, that was great. Thanks. Well done. The class obviously worked for you and not for me, I guess, so that it was just fun. I'm sorry you didn't have a fun class, but yeah, I, I did have fun doing the questions. I think yours was probably a little more academically rigorous. I don't know. Alright, let's go to the well. Our next round of questions is called the Well. Name the only two US zoos that currently have giant pandas and those zoos are the San Diego Zoo and Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, DC And, you know, for a little while they didn't have pandas actually crazy fact, in 2024, for the first time in 50 years, there were no pandas in the United States zoos at all, at either zoo, at either zoo, because there were diplomatic tensions with China. And those are better now. Well, I guess apparently, well, I think the San Diego Zoo got theirs in 2024 at some point. And then the And were they the same pandas they had before? Because I saw, no, I saw those pandas back in like 2017. Okay. I saw'em ages ago at the, yeah. National Zoo. Mm-hmm. But they have theirs back or new ones, I'm not sure. Right. They got them last January. They have their exhibit back either way. Yeah. Okay. But apparently it does not really work from a conservationist standpoint. Like they're like, we live together. We're brother and sister. Yeah, exactly. It's not really. Yeah. They're really just a commodity. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Anywho, question four, what is the name of the deepest known point in the ocean? And that is the Mariana Trench? It used to be the deepest on earth, but a human made borehole. The cola super deep, borehole went deeper. Forgot about that. Yeah, I totally forgot about that. You cannot be serious. I can totally see him doing this. John McEnroe, and the thing is his headband and his big curly hair. Yeah. Yes. Yeah. And the funny thing is like, he wasn't wrong. He usually wasn't wrong, but they didn't have eagle eye back then. They didn't have the instant replay. Yep. And I remember watching a couple and we're like, oh, he is right. Clearly he's right. He saw the puff of chalk come up and they called it out. It was ridiculous. That's so funny. And I will say that he is the best tennis commentator. Oh, I agree. Totally. Absolutely. Great. Patrick, him and his brother together good too. Yep. Yep. But I like John better. Yeah, he's great. Question six. Name the Motown Diva who star as Billie Holiday in the 1972 American biographical musical film, lady sings the blues. And that's Diana Ross. Who else could play that? I mean, she was amazing.
