Balto shows Jenna the Northern Lights: https://youtu.be/JT0q0dmd-Jw?is=GsYZLz4UArQfAekD
Broken glass on the floor, sick kids upstairs, and a town that still doesn’t trust the one wolfdog who might save it. We zoom in on one of the most quietly powerful moments in Balto: when Balto takes Jenna beneath the medical ward and turns empty, broken bottles into a Northern Lights show by catching the light at just the right angle. It’s romance for about five seconds and then reality hits fast, but that contrast is exactly why the scene works.
We talk through what the Northern Lights symbolize and why “finding beauty in brokenness” isn’t about pretending things are fine. We draw a hard line between hope and toxic positivity, because pain is real and it deserves to be honored. The deeper lesson is focus: you can admit what’s shattered without letting it become the only thing you see. That’s where the idea of “true north” comes in, not as a slogan, but as a steady inner direction that keeps you from getting lost in fear, blame, or the town’s distorted version of who you are.
We also unpack the character dynamics that make this theme personal: Balto’s lifelong practice of surviving rejection, Jenna’s choice to resist the crowd, and Steele’s ego-driven manipulation that frames Balto yet again. Then we bring it home with practical tools you can actually use, including staying present, moving your body to move energy, cooking simple nourishing food, journaling, and trying a gratitude journal when your mind won’t stop spiraling.

Welcome And Scene Setup
SPEAKER_00Welcome, Divine Listeners, to episode two of the Divine Dialogue Podcast. Thanks for coming back. Um, so we're gonna go ahead and continue with our exploration of the Balto movie. Um, for episode two, I'm going to get into Balto showing Jenna the Northern Lights. And I've decided to name this episode Finding Beauty in Brokenness. Um and I mean I could name this episode so many different things because the northern lights in the story mean definitely more than one thing, as we're gonna discuss. But I really do like that he is able to take a very bleak um situation and find beauty. I think it's a wonderful lesson. Um, but we're gonna go ahead and do a little recap of the scene and then we'll get into the soul meaning here. So at this point in the story, um, Balto hasn't learned of the sickness that is plaguing the town, specifically the kids of the town, and this is going to be the main plot point of the whole story. Um, Jenna is standing like on her um front paws, anxiously at the window, staring from the outside. Uh, she's watching her little girl Rosie cough and struggle through this illness. And Balto um initially mistakes her distance as disinterest because he's attempting to court her. He's asking her if she wants to, you know, go chase some things in the street with him and kind of just hang out with him. But once he realizes she's preoccupied, he learns what's going on. She tells him about Rosie coughing, and but she's not sure exactly what's wrong, but she knows there's something wrong. And Balto tells her that he can take her closer so that she can listen to what's being talked about. And he uses his wolf paws to nail through a couple gates, saying that he has the keys to the city. Um, and he feels a little bit self-conscious because Jenna is surprised that he can get through these barriers that are outside. Um and he actually walks in front of her, which I think is very interesting because normally like a gentleman-y gesture would be to have the you know, ladies first type thing, but he goes first because he senses that she's a little bit, she's not like scared of him, but she's a little bit in awe of him. And because he's so used to fear, he kind of interprets that as, oh, she's not comfortable, so I'll go first. Um, so he's self-conscious about that. But they walk under the floor of the medical ward, and it's just as gloomy down there as the situation that they were just looking through the window at. And Balto leads her to basically just underneath where the doctors are. Um, there are broken bottles and there's light from the room above. And he's telling her, you know, dogs have traveled so far just to come right here. And he says, you know, look how beautiful the bottles are. And, you know, he says, You're looking at them half empty, and then Jenna says, They're all empty, they're broken bottles. And he positions the bottles to catch the light just right from the room above, and the quote unquote northern lights appear on the wall in front of them. And she remarks how beautiful they are, and he looks at her and says, Yeah, beautiful. And of course he's talking about her. And they are interrupted out of the, you know, temporary romance when basically the doctor walks past the light shining through above them, which disrupts the northern lights, catching the bottles, and they learn about the dire situation they're facing, which is that the children are sick and they're out of medicine, and they will need to basically go on a mission to bring more medicine to the town.
Broken Bottles Become Northern Lights
SPEAKER_00So, for the sole meaning of this scene, there's a lot going on here. Um, so Balto is obviously enamored with Jenna, and it's not subtle. Um, but even in leading her to more answers, we see him struggle with his wolf part um with the door, like when he lets her go through ahead of him. But he still manages to turn basically what's a recon mission into a romantic outing, which is pretty impressive. Um, and what I love about this scene is that it shows us that beauty is always there. Um, you just have to know where to look and how to position the broken pieces to catch the light so that you can see it. And the Northern Lights becomes a focal point of sorts um in this story. It's Jenna and Balto's entire foundation for their relationship, which is follow your true north. Um, his true north speaking to her and her speaking to him. Obviously, his true north is like finding his um his wolf part and accepting it. And I think for her true north is because Steele is, you know, essentially the anti-balto in the story. So he's trying to pursue Jenna, and all the other girl dogs are, you know, telling her, you know, well, why don't you give him a sniff? Why don't you give him a chance? And Jenna's like, yeah, I'm good. I don't like him. He's very egoic and gross, and I'm not into that. And so Jenna is kind of fighting like the you know, current of the dogs around her and just the town, because the town is very dog, you know, focused and and dogs are the superior energy, and so she's kind of you know challenging that because she's taking an interest in Balto, so like that she sees him for who he really is because the town is just so afraid of him. So she helps him see himself, and he also helps her see herself because she just doesn't resonate with the energy of this town and the direction that they want her to go, because she's essentially like, which we'll go over the story too, but she's very much has the spirit of Belle from Beauty and the Beast because like Gaston is very much like Steele and Beast is more like Balto, although Beast is definitely a more damaged version of Balto, but we're kind of getting off topic. Basically, her energy is very much in opposition to the town around her. Um, and I also think it's important to kind of note that Jenna may struggle a little more when things get bleak because for her, life has mostly made sense. Um, like, you know, she's a dog, she's fully accepted. Um, you know, the town likes her. They do think she's a little peculiar, but they don't reject her. And she's got a family, like she's got Rosie, and she's got, you know, her her masters essentially, and she's pretty well situated. Uh for Balto, he has had a lot of practice arranging the broken bottles in his life. Um, but even in that moment, he is focused completely on her because she doesn't need to be positioned to catch the light. Um, she's always beautiful and he knows it. Um, and masculine energy and its alignment will always recognize the beauty and divinity of the feminine, um, even when they're in the vicinity, like they they just see it. Um, so it's obvious to him that she's special and she knows that he's special, and they, you know, almost have like the equivalent of a dog kiss down there. Um, but then with the interruption, then they listen and she's uh really upset. And it's very fascinating because so after we have this beautiful scene with the northern lights, they walk out and Balto apologizes for taking her down there, and she's like, No, I'm really glad you took me down here. And then we see Steel Kareem out of like the side of the alley through the trash cans carrying like sausage links in his mouth, and it's just so fitting because he's like quite literally trash, and he comes out of the trash. So that's that's a nice little uh symbolism there. But he tries to get um you know Jenna to go with him, and she plays into his ego because ego is very easy to stroke, especially when you are very aware of your feminine. It's very easy to do. And he um so she starts kind of acting like she's being seduced by him, and he she kind of leads him back. There's like a furnace oven type thing behind him, and he's completely clueless because he's like, Oh, she likes me, and I got sausage links, and I am the big bad dog, you know. And Balto knows what she's doing and he smiles, and then she's like, I prefer my meat cooked, and she pushes his basically his tail back into the fire and you know, lights a fire under his butt and he howls, and but then he throws the meat at Balto, um, and they think that Balto stole the meat, and so it's just another manipulation, another basically layer of false evidence placed on Balto, um, and another uh, you know, time where he has to again rearrange the broken bottles because he gets pushed down again and gets accused again and gets cast in the incorrect light, not his northern light, but their, you know, skewed um just frequency of him. It's not accurate, but he has to contend with that again. Um,
The Personal Mirror Beyond Positivity
SPEAKER_00so for a personal mirror for this scene, um, this one's always meant a lot to me. And um actually we will be revisiting it in another story. Um Harry Potter has something very close to this. This is gonna be a ways down the line, though, because it's um in the um Deathly Hollow, so it's towards the end. It's the Deluminator. Um, I think touches on the same lesson as the Northern Lights. Um, essentially just finding your way back to the light, basically. But, you know, it's very easy to get lost in the broken pieces of life. Um, it's easy to look at the fracturing and really get very depressed looking at it. Um but then I remember that there are northern lights to be seen if you look a certain way. Um, the truth is, and this is where I part from people who really push like positive thinking, and I think it's just toxic positivity, but there is a lot of broken glass in the world. Um, and that pain is very real. It's crushing and it's worth honoring, and not waving away under the guise of, oh, just be positive. Um, because to dismiss that pain means you're ignoring reality. But I think it's all about focus. Like, um, you can focus on the broken pieces, and the broken pieces are true. It's not an issue of if they're true, it's an issue more of what it does to your inner state to focus on them. Um, but there's still always beauty, it might only be one small moment. Um, but that is truly medicine for the soul. And as Balto knows, it definitely helps when there is a beautiful girl standing next to you to help you see it. Um, when you're masculine, that's always very helpful. Um, so the divine question I have for you today is when in your life have you had to position the broken bottles to catch the light, to remember your true north, and to look for beauty even when it seemed like all of it was eclipsed by the darkness.
The Divine Question About True North
SPEAKER_00Um, and so for me, I um didn't prepare an answer for this question because I kind of wanted to have it come to me as I was recording. Um so I'm gonna think on it here for a couple moments. So for me with this question, um, I would say it's not a specific point in my life. Um, I feel like I'd make a very concerted effort to remember this as a daily practice. Um, because I think every day your mind has a way of trying to get you to focus on the broken bottles um and forget your true north. And we kind of know how that works because your mind will be like, oh, you know, why bother? Like you've never been able to do this, or well, you can take this step, but then what are you gonna do after that? And it's very future focused and it brings the past in as well to remind you of why maybe certain um attempts to remember your true north failed. Because if the mind is leading, it wants to go into the past and the future. The mind is not very comfortable in the present moment, um, but that's where you have to stay to really see the beauty because that's really all there ever is, um, is what is you know before you right now. So for me, um every day I wake up and it's like I could choose to look at the broken bottles of my past, worry about the broken bottles in my future, but I'm like, well, what can I do today? And
Daily Practices That Recenter You
SPEAKER_00a lot of that is very mundane, boring stuff. Um, like, you know, I do a lot of self-care things. I have a row machine that I use, so I move my body, which moves my energy. Um, you know, I cook nutritious food for myself. Um, that's actually something new that I started doing because I was like a DoorDash addict. Um, and I started cooking at home, and that's made a huge difference. Um, it's basically remembering that um or or just coming home to being able to like acknowledge that there's tons of broken bottles, um, but the way that you can position them, like you can catch the beauty. Um, there is beauty in the brokenness, it's not all just like despair. And you know, sometimes it takes like a certain kind of brokenness for you to see the light. Like it's really unfortunate because suffering shouldn't like the extent to which we suffer in the world, I think, is way overdone. It's not, it doesn't need to be nearly as um extreme as it is, but through suffering, like you can absolutely learn to catch the light. Um and unfortunately, a lot of people get lost in the broken bottles. But I really think it comes back to making a commitment every day to stay as present as you can. Um, and essentially if things external to you are not going the way you want, refocus on what you can do. And like I said, sometimes that's as simple as making yourself a nice meal because you're putting creative energy into nourishing yourself. It can be as simple as getting on a row machine and going for like a 15 or 20 minute row. And um, in my case, mine is very game inspired, so I can unlock new levels on it and it's really fun. Or, you know, I have an altar that I sit by so I can like journal a little bit and just sit with myself. Um and I also think for all of you who might be struggling with turning broken bottles into your north, your northern lights or your true north, um, maybe consider starting a gratitude journal. That helped me a lot. Um, I still do it not every day, but that can be very helpful. Um, just to look for small things that you know you're grateful for because there's always something. Um, and it's basically like um energy flows where attention goes, I really think is true. So it's important to keep that in mind. Uh, don't lose track of your true north. Um and we will see this come back later um because Jenna basically learns how to position the broken bottles. So Balto taught her that. Um, and she helps him get home as well. He needs to rely on himself to do it, but she also helps him um find his way back. Uh, because of course he is gonna be a very crucial part of um this entire story since he's the main character.
Next Episode Preview And Listener Invite
SPEAKER_00Um, and in the next episode, which is probably gonna be the longest of the series, we're going to get into basically the part of the story where Balto um looks for Steel because basically Steele and the team of dogs, so Balto is banned from helping them. Um he goes out to try to find them because they are gone longer than expected, and the town knows that something has gone wrong with their mission to go fetch the medicine. So Balto goes out and tries to find them. And in that episode, um, we get into basically how insane Steel is, and then when Balto finally breaks through and finds his inner wolf, and that's like a huge climactic part of the story where he um fully integrates himself. And we're gonna talk about that in the next episode. Um but until then, divine listeners, thank you once again for joining uh this latest episode. Again, I do have um in the show notes um my business email. If you have any show suggestions or anything you'd like to say, um I'm totally open to having, you know, dialogue outside of this podcast. Um, that's a big reason why I'm doing this. I hope to find an audience that wants to talk about these things. Um, so if you have anything you'd like to say, any feedback on episodes, any suggestions for shows, um, please send them my way, and I will um get back to you as soon as I can. Um, but I will go ahead and leave it there. And next week we will get into episode three, only two episodes left of Balto, and then I plan to go ahead and venture into the Harry Potter series. So thank you, divine listeners, for tuning in, and I will catch you on the next one.
